Chapter 82 - Epilogue

Although we didn’t know it at the time, the situation with Reece’s dad was about to explode.  It happened on the weekend of Dakota’s birthday.  I planned on having a party for him at the house with each of the boys’ friends spending the weekend with us.

They all brought the things they’d need with them on Friday and left them in my SUV while they were attending classes, and this included the clothes they would wear to school on Monday.  As soon as the final bell rang, we piled into the SUV and I drove home.

It was around 10:00 on Saturday morning when my phone rang and I quickly discovered it was Reece’s mom.

Mr. Schulz, I need to ask you to do a favor for me.”

Before you tell me what it is, I need to ask a favor of you first.  Please call me Eric, not Mr. Schultz.”

Ok, and you can call me Betsy.”

Thank you.  Is there a problem, because you sound different for some reason?  Have you been crying?”

I’ll explain it all to you shortly, but I need to ask you a question first.”

Ok, then what favor would you like me to do for you?”

Would you be willing to let Reece stay with you for a while?  There’s been a situation with his father.”

Of course, I will.  How long are we talking about?”

Maybe a couple of months.  Possibly even longer.”

That’s not a problem for me, but what’s going on with his dad?”

She then told me her story and made me feel as if I was there with her when it happened.  It all started when he returned home after work the previous day.

Where’s Reece?  He needs to get his ass out here now!”

He’s not home.”

Where the hell is he?”

He’s with friends.”

He’s always with friends, but I need him to do something now!  It’s important, so tell me where he is and I’ll go get him.”

You’re in no shape to go anywhere.  You reek of booze, although I can’t understand how that’s possible.  You were supposed to be working, not drinking.”

We had problems at work and the boss let us go before lunch.”

He let you go before lunch and you’re just coming home now?  It’s after 6:00.  And why did he send you home?  Were you drinking on the job?”

No!  The weather was terrible and some of the machinery broke down so we couldn’t finish up.  The maintenance people told him it would take several hours to get everything working again, so he told us to go home.”

But you went to a bar instead and spent money on booze that we need for other things.”

I earned it and it’s my fucking money, so I’ll do with it what I want.  Now, tell me were Reece is.  I need him to take care of this shit now!”

If it’s so important, then why didn’t you come straight home and do it yourself?”

Because I want Reece to do it, so tell me where he is.”

No.  Let him enjoy himself and you can do whatever it is when you sober up.”

You either tell me where he is or you’re both going to be sorry.”

I told you that isn’t going to happen.”  Marshall punched her hard in the face and she fell backward, onto the floor.  “Now tell me where he is or you’re going to regret it.”

She didn’t say a word and merely looked at him defiantly as she rubbed her jaw and wiped some blood from her mouth.  When she didn’t respond, he went over and grabbed her by the hair and pulled her to her feet.

Now, tell me where he is!”

Once again she didn’t respond, so he punched her one more time, and when she fell on the floor, he started kicking her as well.  He then rushed into another room of the house, and when he returned, he looked even madder than before, like a bull that was getting ready to charge.

Where the fuck are my guns?” he screamed as he reached down and began twisting her arm.  “What the hell did you do with them?”

Leave me alone!” she shouted back as he rotated her arm in ways it wasn’t meant to go.  “You’re hurting me.”

Then tell me where my rifle and shotgun are?”

They’re not here.  I didn’t trust you having them in the house.”

He twisted her arm severely one more time before he released it, and then he started punching and kicking her again.  When she still didn’t answer, he headed toward the front door, but he turned and shouted defiantly before he left.

I’ll find Reece on my own and then both of you will be sorry.”

He opened the door, headed outside, and slammed the door behind him.  A few seconds later, she heard the car start, so she picked up the phone and dialed.

9-1-1, how may I help you?”

I need an ambulance.  My husband came home drunk and beat me up, and now he’s out driving around drunk looking for our son.  You have to notify the police so they can pick him up before he kills someone.”

                             *        *        *        *        *

So, what happened next?” I asked.

The ambulance picked me up and took me to the hospital.  I have a spiral fracture of my left arm from him twisting it, he knocked out one of my teeth, I have numerous lacerations inside my mouth, and I have a badly bruised jaw.  That’s why I’m talking funny.  I also have bruises all over my body and the nurses took multiple photos of what I look like.”

I’m sorry that you had to go through that, but I’m glad you sought help and are getting treated.”

Hopefully, Marshalls health insurance plan will cover the hospital bill, because I’m sure he’s going to lose his job if the cops pick him up and arrest him.  These injuries happened before he’ll get the axe and I have no doubt that’s going to happen.  His boss warned him the last time that he’d get fired if this happened again, because he ended up in jail after his first DUI.”

So, have you heard anything about your husband?”

Yes.  A State Police Officer came to see me in the hospital to take a statement for his report and he told me that Marshall has been arrested.  He’s been charged with domestic battery, corporal injury on a spouse, criminal threats, and DUI.  That’s his second DUI offense, so he’ll spend more than sixty days in jail this time.”

So where is he now?”

The State Police Officer said Marshall will be spending the weekend in jail and he’ll appear before the judge on Monday.  That’s why I want you to keep Reece, in case he gets out on bail or ROR, which means released on own recognizance.  I’m afraid of what he might do next.”

Reece can definitely stay with us, but you’ll have to notify the main office about this, because Marshall might show up at school to get Reece.”

I’ll call first thing on Monday, but can you let the principal know how serious this is?”

Yes, I’ll be happy to do that for you.”

When Marshall appeared in court on Monday, he was charged with each of those crimes, plus child endangerment.  That was added later because of the threats he made about harming both his wife and his son; plus things he’d done to Reece in the past.  Marshall was then given a court date and remanded to jail until the trial, but we all know how that goes.  It will keep dragging out for months until it’s finally resolved.

Both Betsy’s and Marshall’s parents offered to help her pay the mortgage until the case was resolved.  After I talked to Betsy about how things went in court, I asked her if she wanted Reece to return home.  She said she did, but she still wanted him to spend the weekends with us so he could be a kid and get away from thinking about his father and his troubles for a brief time.  Of course, I agreed.

A couple of weeks later, I took all of the boys to Universal Orlando and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for four days during the mid-winter break.  Not only did I take my sons, but I took Reece, Brady, and Aaron as well, and we picked up Laine and Caleb on the way to the airport so they could also go with us.  We had a fantastic time and did everything possible while we were there, and of course there was a lot of sexual activity when we got back to the resort each evening.

Betsy filed for divorce from Marshall after what he’d done to her, so that was another legal situation he’d have to deal with.  Betsy just couldn’t see staying with him any longer after what he’d done this time, because she knew he would have killed her if he’d found his rifle or shotgun, and she feared for Reece’s safety as well.

Shawn contacted me when he got out of juvy, and Paul brought him to the house so he could apologize to the boys.  Shawn not only let them know that he was extremely sorry for how he’d acted when he was here and for wrecking one of the four-wheelers, but he also asked if they would be willing to let him come back.  I told the boys it was up to them and they suggested we take a vote.  I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out, but the vote was unanimous and we welcomed Shawn back into the fold.  It was a very touching reunion and I was proud of the boys.

When Shawn moved back in, I gave him the same bedroom that he had before, but he surprised me and spent most nights in with Glen.  Since Glen preferred being a bottom, Shawn was happy to oblige him, but he would also switch off once in a while, whenever Glen wanted to top.  Whenever Brady stayed over, the three of them would spend the night together and engage in various sexual activities, so this definitely wasn’t the same Shawn that showed up the first time he was here.

Dakota also spent some time with Shawn, but not nearly as much as either Glen or Brady.  Laine spent time with Shawn as well, whenever he was with us, since he and Caleb spent part of their summer vacation at our place.  They also come here for the holidays with their parents and it seemed to be working out very well.

Marshall finally went to trial in June and was convicted on all charges, which included three misdemeanors and two felony counts.  The fact that the prosecutor didn’t drop any of the charges may sound harsh, but he refused to do it since Marshall had failed to accept any of the four different plea agreements the prosecutor had offered.

In the end, Marshall was sentenced as follows: he was to spend a year in jail for each of the misdemeanor charges and they were to be served concurrently, which meant at the same time.  He was credited for the time he’d been in jail awaiting trial, so he only had to serve a few months as he waited to be transferred to a state prison.  This was because he’d received a four-year prison sentence on each of the two felony counts, which were to be served consecutively, meaning one after the other.

In addition to that, he was fined a total of $5,000, which he would have to pay once he’d served his time, and he would have to participate in a ‘batterers’ program.  He would also have a permanent criminal record, along with losing custody rights of Reece, and he would no longer be able to have any firearms in his possession.  His driver’s license was also suspended due to the DUI and he lost his job, so the result of his chain of bad decisions cost him dearly.

Once he was convicted, he agreed to the divorce as well.  Betsy said she wouldn’t seek alimony or child support if he signed the house over to her.  She figured he wouldn’t be able to pay either while in prison and she couldn’t wait until he got out to receive the money.  Since the house was nearly paid for, she felt it was a good trade, and because he didn’t have any other options, he agreed.  He figured he would lose the house while in prison anyway, due to the fact that he couldn’t continue paying the mortgage, so he didn’t consider it a big deal.  There would also be a permanent restraining, or protective, order to prevent him from being near either Betsy or Reece in the future.

Once things quieted down after the legal proceedings ended, I asked Betsy if she was going to be able to make the mortgage payments and inquired as to how much they still owed.  She said she wasn’t sure, but she knew they were close to paying it off, so she checked with the bank to get that information.  She came back and informed me there were fourteen months left on the mortgage and told me the balance on it.  Since it didn’t seem like a very large sum, I paid off the mortgage for her so she could use the money she earned on Reece and herself.

I also opened a 529 tax-advantaged savings plan for each of the boys, and I worked with the other parents and had them do the same thing for their sons.  In addition to presents I would give them; I would also present each boy with a $1,000 check for his birthday and $2,000 check for Christmas so they could add it to their account.  I would also do this each year after they graduated from high school, as long as they were enrolled in college, so they wouldn’t be facing enormous student loan debt later in life.  I’d also help them in other ways, such as paying for their books and covering all of their other expenses if they maintained a 3.0 G.P.A.

Over the years, Jamie, Aaron, and Caleb stayed very close, and Jamie and Aaron officially became boyfriends during their junior year of high school.  After college, they got jobs in the same general area and moved in together, and then they got married a year later.  Both families attended the ceremony and supported this wonderful couple.

Glen met a guy in college that he became intimate with, but they got jobs in different parts of the country and that ended their relationship.  Glen then met someone else in the city where he was working and they became close and eventually moved in together.  They haven’t gotten married, and I’m not sure they ever will, but they’re both happy, so I’m happy for them.

From what he told me, Shawn messed around with members of both sexes throughout college, but then he married a very lovely girl that he met after getting a job.  They didn’t work for the same company, but they met through someone who worked with Shawn, and they got married as well.  They have two children, a boy and a girl, and seem to be very happy.

Even though I encouraged Dakota to spend time with boys his age, and even though he enjoyed fooling around with them, he never gave up on his dream that one day we’d get married.  We had to jump through some hoops in order to do this, since I’d previously adopted him and he was legally my son, but he was determined and wouldn’t give up until he got what he wanted.  Several years after he earned his college degree, we got married and we’ve been very happy ever since.

Our house is always full at the holidays, since all of the boys, their spouses, and even their parents come here to celebrate with us, so our house is still filled with love.  Laine and Caleb’s parents stay in Dakota’s old room whenever they’re here, and Shawn’s children sleep in the family room, since there are two sofas that they can sleep on.  It also keeps them away from the activities on the second floor at night, even though they have to go up there to shower and get ready for bed before the others turn in.

Dakota and I are talking about taking in more boys now, the same way I’d taken in him and his brothers, but we haven’t done it yet.  I believe he wanted me all to himself for a while first, but I have a feeling that he’s about ready to become a dad.  I’m sure this family will be quite different from the last one, but we both have a lot to offer them, so I’m sure everything will work out fine.

THE END.
