His voice dropped. "And a good night, I hope." I blushed, nodding, "Thanks to you." He smiled again, "Go back to bed. I will get Forts and Davy's tea." I hugged him and kissed his cheek, "Thank you Vlad... For everything." He hugged me and whispered in my ear, "Remember, to err is human, to forgive divine." ********************** Operation Pied Piper – Part 131e – Back to Normal – Happy Birthday Davy continues the story "Forts! Come on. Athol sounded like he was going to explode! I said we would only be a minute." Forts was twisting round, struggling with his sporran belt buckle. God, he looked so horny back in his long kilt, with those lovely hairy legs and his oatmeal-coloured boot socks in his black brogues on display once more. "I'm coming... I'm coming." He finally managed to fasten the buckle and together we hurried down the corridor towards Athol's office. Forts was surprisingly happy, "I am pleased Denis and Marcus managed to sort things out." I gave him a look, "Yes. Don't you go getting any ideas, though. I am not so forgiving." Forts grabbed me and lifted me off the floor, spinning me round. "I know, that's why I love you so much." I shook my head, "Come on. Put me down, Athol sounded frantic." As we got to the office, I knocked on the door. A voice barked. "Come in!" It was Athol's, and he didn't sound happy. Forts gave me a worried look and kissed my cheek, "Better let me go in first." I nodded. I followed Forts into the room. Athol and Archie were by his desk, and another man who looked like a builder was standing slightly to the side. "Morning Dad. You wanted to see us?" "Finally!" Athol snapped. Surprised, Forts glanced at me. I mouthed, "I told you!" "Dad, what is it?" "Daphne's memorial and the mausoleum have been vandalised now, too! What the fuck is going on around here?" Forts staggered, "No... What's happened?" "Mr Brown, the builder arrived this morning and has just found that all the plants around Daphne's memorial have been pulled up and thrown into the reflecting pool. Also, building materials and plants have been thrown about inside the mausoleum." "But." Forts was genuinely struggling with this information. He looked at me, "Who would do that?" I shook my head. Forts took my hand, "We have to get it cleaned up. Davy, will you help me?" I nodded, seeing how upset he was, "Of course. I am sure a few others will help, too." Athol nodded and turned to Mr Brown. "If you can make good any actual damage. We will be over shortly to help clear up." Mr Brown nodded, "Thank you, Your Lordship... Prince," and he left. * Athol waited until the door closed. "What the fuck is going on? Have I missed something? I have had the son of the Marquess of Dunbar telling me one of my masters swore at him and threatened him... and now..." Forts interrupted... "What, who?" "McPhee!" Athol shook his head. Forts was looking at his dad as if he had gone crazy. "Chris? No way." Athol ignored his comments and continued, the words cascading from his mouth. "And that's not all, now Poor Drew, getting beaten black and blue and ending up with cum all over his face. Then Brian falls down the stairs and breaks his arm, and now this!" Archie leant in. "Well, this kind of proves these are not all isolated incidents. It looks like they are all connected and involve the same person." Athol sighed, "Yes, but Drew insists he fell over and Brian that he slipped on the stairs!" He shook his head, "We have been here for three years and no one has fallen down the stairs like that." There didn't seem to be an answer. Obviously unsettled, Athol shook his head. He picked up a pile of papers and shuffled them for no reason other than shuffling them. Watching him, I wasn't even sure he was aware he had done it. Finally, he spoke again, "If McPhee is behind this... He is finished here!" "Dad, I don't believe that. McPhee would never do these things." Forts argued. "Well, I am glad YOU are so certain. I wish I was. Forts, there is another thing, I am sorry, I am going to have to speak to Gethin, we can't risk the King visiting while all this is going on. I am sorry, son, but we just can't risk it." "It's okay, dad, I understand. I am not sure why I am getting the medal really, anyway," Forts' voice tailed off. Athol turned back to his desk. Forts looked at me, shaking his head, realising further discussion with his dad about McPhee was pointless. "Dad, do you mind if Davy and I head over to get started clearing up Daphne's memorial?" "No, on you go, son. We will join you shortly... Son," Athol sighed, "I am sorry about everything, especially suspecting Chris of involvement, you know that... I don't like accusing Chris, but we all know what he has been up to with Drew. I just hope it hasn't all gotten out of hand." * Forts was quiet, stunned even, as we walked down the corridor towards the stairs. "I can't believe Chris is behind all this." I nodded, "Nor can I. He would never have done anything to the memorial." "But Davy," Forts was caught up in his thoughts, "Who could do that? Who could desecrate a memorial?" I shook my head. "Forts, I really don't know." We were about to go down the stairs when we saw Brookmeyer coming up towards us. He glanced up and, seeing us, did an abrupt about turn and hurried off downwards. Forts called out, "Brookmeyer, wait!" Brookmeyer ignored him. Forts took off down the stairs, calling back to me, "What the fuck! Did he look okay to you?" Surprised by Forts' sudden movement and his question, I called back, "Forts, I didn't really see him, sorry." I hurried after him as he jumped down the stairs, two at a time. I ran through the Castle door, just in time to see Forts had grabbed Brookmeyer. "I told you to stop!" Forts pulled Brookmeyer round to face him, "Jesus, Daniel, what happened to your face?" I joined them and found myself standing open-mouthed in shock. Brookmeyer had obviously been punched repeatedly in the face, one of his eyes looked like it was closing and his nose was bleeding. Forts glanced back at me, shaking his head. He took out his hankie, "Daniel, who did this?" Brookmeyer turned his head away, "It's nothing... I tripped." Forts exploded as he held the hankie to Brookmeyer's nose. "Bollocks, you did!" Wiping away more blood, he examined his face closer. "Daniel, tell me who did this!" "Please, Forts..." He tried to pull away, "I fell!" His voice was saying one thing, yet his eyes pleaded for me to help him. Probably because we were both distracted, we didn't hear the crunch of the gravel as someone approached. "Good morning, Your Imperial Highness, Oops, Forts. Oh, my goodness, that looks awful Brookmeyer. I thought I saw you fall. You should be more careful!" Brookmeyer looked momentarily panicked, his eyes flashing to Lillis. We both turned. Forts nodded, "Good morning Lillis. Did you see what happened then?" "Yes, Forts, I was just trying to catch him up and make sure he was okay. I saw him trip and fall, it looked nasty." Forts looked at me, shaking his head, mumbling. "You saw him trip and fall?" Lillis nodded. Forts turned back to Brookmeyer, "Well, get yourself up to the medical room now." "I will take him Forts." Lillis gripped Brookmeyer's arm, "Come with me, you. Now no running, we don't want you getting hurt... anymore." Unless I was mistaken, Brookmeyer didn't look very happy as he was led away by Lillis. We watched them entering the castle. "Forts, you don't actually believe that load of nonsense, do you?" "Of course not. Davy, what the fuck is going on?" Forts glanced back at the castle door, then shook his head again. "Come on, let us see what damage has been done at the memorial." ** McPhee continues the story I knocked on the medical room door. Opened it, and poked my head round. "Con, it's me. Can I come in?" He looked troubled. He didn't answer, just nodded. I slipped into the room and closed the door. I began walking over to his desk. "Con, are you okay? You didn't come to bed last night." He stood as I approached, turning his back on me, and crossed to one of the cupboards. "No, I slept here." I could sense something was seriously wrong, I followed him, "But why?" He stopped what he was doing and turned slowly to face me. "Chris, this is painful enough without dragging it out. I understand you and Drew have fallen for each other." He sighed, "I mean, why wouldn't you? He is gorgeous and, well, I am an old man." "Con, what are you talking about?" "Chris, it's okay. I understand. I could see how upset you were yesterday about what had happened to Drew... and then his cute little speech about being in love with you..." "Con no! You have got this all wrong. I love you!... Of course, I care about Drew, I thought we both did! But I am not in love with him. I love you! He is just infatuated with me!" Con eased past me and walked to his chair and slowly sat down, his head in his hands. I followed after him, dropping to my knees beside him. "God, you do believe me, don't you? I can't believe you thought that. Please, don't you abandon me too..." I felt my voice falter, "Athol thinks I beat Drew up over this cum thing. And that I am responsible for God knows what else, and now you think I have fallen in love with Drew? What's happening? Anybody would think there was something in the water. Is the whole place going crazy?... Con, please. I love you, only you." He raised his head and looked at me through moist eyes. "I love you too, Chris." We both stood and embraced kissing, "I am sorry Chris! I am just a silly old man, please forgive me." "Oh, Con." I hugged and kissed him like my life depended on it. Behind us, the door burst open. Con and I jumped apart like an electric charge had hit us. He coughed and moved towards the door. "Oh, my God. Brookmeyer, what's happened?" I turned to see Lillis' face. He had hold of Brookmeyer's arm, a little too tightly it looked. Brookmeyer was holding a hankie to his nose, it was stained with blood. Now you all know I don't like Lillis, we had exchanged words already. He sneered at me and turned to Con, "Oh doctor, you are here, thank goodness, Brookmeyer tripped and fell... Didn't you BROOKMEYER?" Brookmeyer flinched and nodded. Con moved towards the examination couch. "Well, bring him over here so I can have a look at him." Sounding none too sincere, Lillis continued, "I tried to clean him up with my hankie... you know, to stop his nose bleeding." Con pulled the hankie away from Brookmeyer's nose and put it down in a small stainless steel kidney dish. I glanced down at it, immediately seeing Forts' monogram on it. Once more it was obvious to me at least, this Lillis chap was not telling the truth. Con began to clean up Brookmeyer, he turned to me, "Chris, can you go and get Athol please? He will want to know about this." I nodded and left. * Athol didn't knock, he just marched straight into the room with me following. Before Con could speak, Lillis started. "Oh, good morning, Your Lordship." Athol nodded, "Good morning Lillis... You again." I was about to cheer when Con spoke, "Yes, Lillis brought Brookmeyer up to me and tried to staunch the blood flow with his hankie. He is becoming a regular little medic." I could have screamed, but didn't want to contradict Con in front of Lillis. Athol moved closer, peering at Brookmeyer's nose. I took my chance and moved the kidney dish closer and nodded to it. I saw Athol's eyes move and focus on the monogram. He glanced up at me and nodded. Athol smiled and turning, patted Lillis on the back, "Well thank you Lillis." Lillis beamed and turned to me, smirking, and gave me a fuck you look. He continued fawning, "Is there anything else I can do to help Your Lordship?" "No, that will be fine, you can get on. Thank you Lillis. Oh, and please call me Mr MacDonald in the future." Lillis pointedly looked at me again, "Oh, but Sir, titles are so important. They help us all know where we sit in the pecking order... Don't they Baronet Kingholm?" I felt myself flush red. Athol made eye contact with me and gave a slight shake of his head. I didn't answer Lillis, no one did. He smirked at me again and turned for the door, "Oh be careful Brookmeyer, especially with that eye closing up, you don't want to risk the other one ending up the same." The door clicked shut. I couldn't hold it in anymore. "I really don't like him!" I spat the words out. Athol muttered, "He doesn't seem to like you either. Chris, he has complained about you, saying you swore at him and pushed him. Is that correct?" I felt Con's eyes on us, although he remained working on Brookmeyer. "Well, we had a slight altercation when he first arrived. He was bullying Drew." "Drew?" "Yes, I intervened, he told me I was a mere Baronet and should remember my place when addressing a Viscount and the son of the Marquess of Dunbar." Athol raised his eyebrow, "He said that to you?" I nodded. "Okay Chris, can you see me later? I need to get this sorted out." He turned back to Con, "How serious is it?" "Oh, he is going to be a bit sore and bruised for a few days, but at least nothing is broken this time." "Good." Athol moved in front of Brookmeyer, "I suppose there is no point in me asking who did this?" Brookmeyer shook his head before replying, "I tripped, just like Lillis said, Mr MacDonald, Sir." Athol shook his head and turned for the door, exasperation written all over his face, "Fine!" he snapped, "Be more careful in future!" Athol touched Con's arm, "I have to go, Brian is visiting Gary with Maureen and Arran." Brookmeyer looked up, "Oh, can I go too?" Con answered him before Athol could. "Sorry Daniel, I need you to stay here. I have to make sure your nose settles down. Sorry." He was rubbing Brookmeyer's head. Athol nodded in agreement, "Next time, perhaps." Brookmeyer seemed to have an idea, "Can I see Brian before he goes, please Sir?" Athol nodded, "I am sure that will be alright. I will send him along." And the door closed behind him. ** Gary continues the story Today was the day. I was sitting by my window waiting, finally I was getting to see Maureen and Aaran again. I glanced up at the clock as I heard a car pulling up outside. Peering through the window, my heart sank. No, that can't be them, not in a Rolls Royce. It must be one of Professor Hamilton's friends. I looked at the vehicle again. No, that was one of Forts' Rolls Royces. I recognised the numberplate. The door to my room opened and Oscar's face smiled in. You will remember he is my psychiatric nurse. "Well, are you ready? Do you want to come and meet them at the door?" I nodded and hurried, following him to the main entrance. I immediately recognised Andrei, Forts' chauffeur. He saw me and waved over. That made me both happy and sad as well. Happy because he was pleased to see me, sad because I knew I would not be leaving with them. Andrei went to the rear door and opened it. I glanced at Oscar. He smiled, nodding, "Not long now and you will see them all again." First out of the vehicle was Maureen, she had Aaran in her arms. He looked bigger. I wanted to run to them, but knew that wasn't allowed. I shuffled from one foot to the other, Maureen looked round and up at the large building that had become my home. Then she saw me and waved, her face breaking into a happy smile. She seemed to glance down at Aaran and say something, pointing in my direction. The door of the car was still open, who else had come? Andrei leant into the car and appeared to be helping someone out. It was Brian! God, his arm was in plaster and even from this distance I could see he had bruising to his face. He saw me and half smiling, half grimacing, he waved with his other arm. Andrei walked to the rear of the vehicle and retrieved three small overnight bags. I had been so pleased when Professor Hamilton had said they could all stay overnight. Not in my room, of course, but in the family rooms. I practically willed them across the gravel to the steps. Maureen was excited telling Aaran, "There's daddy... There's daddy." She had his little face uncovered. He looked so beautiful. As she got to the steps, Maureen leant forward and kissed my cheek and handed Aaran to me. As I took him in my arms, my emotions bubbled over and my tears rolled down my cheeks, dropping on to his little upturned face. I pressed my lips to his little cheeks, blubbing, "Hello, son." Brian had stood quietly this whole time with Andrei. I turned to face him, still holding Aaran, tears streaming down my face. "Hello Brian..." "Hi Gary." He stood, obviously hesitating. I glanced at Maureen and then back at Brian, "Don't I get a hug?" He dashed forward and threw his good arm round me, kissing my cheek. "I have missed you. We all have." I nodded and tapped his cast, "What happened to your arm and your face?" He glanced from Maureen to the ground, "Oh, nothing." She shook her head, "That's not true! He was beaten up, but won't say by who." I turned to her, "What has Athol done about it?" "Nothing, he can't until someone tells him what's going on and at the moment he is just being told LIES." She spat out the last word as she glared at Brian. He blushed and looked at the ground once more, "I'm not," he whispered. I knew he was lying again and this time to me, but now was not the time to pursue it. I smiled up at Andrei, "Good to see you, my friend." He stepped forward and gave me a big Russian bear hug, "And you, tovarishch." (Friend/Comrade) "Oh careful, you will squash little Aaran." I managed to get out as he hugged me. "Oh, sorry." He stepped back, holding his hands up, smiling. Oscar spoke, "Shall we all go inside? I think there is some tea waiting for us." He smiled at Maureen, "I am sure you could all do with a cup after your journey." The three of them nodded and followed us inside. Oscar led us to one of the day rooms, it was set out like a sitting room in a home with comfortable chairs. He stayed with us as we all drank a welcome cup of tea and made polite conversation, mainly about their journey. I chuckled, "And you got to come in style in one of Forts' Rolls Royces." Maureen smiled, "Yes he insisted... He sends you his love... so does Davy and Athol... Well, everyone, actually." I nodded, feeling mixed emotions once more. Oscar stood and smiled at Andrei, "I had better show you where you are sleeping tonight." Andrei nodded and gave me a friendly wave. "Hopefully, see you again later." Brian stood, "I had better come with you. You can show me my room too. It will let Maureen and Gary have some time alone together." Brian said as he joined Oscar and Andrei. Maureen smiled at Brian and mouthed, "Thank you." * Later, after we had eaten, while Maureen was putting Aaran off to bed, I got some time alone with Brian. I could tell from his face he knew what I was going to say. He shuffled uneasily as Maureen left. "So, are you going to tell me what really happened?" Brian began to sob, he put his good hand to cover his eyes, "I can't. He will kill me! He has already beaten-up Drew, and Brookmeyer too!" I got up off my chair and joined Brian on the small couch, putting my arm round him. ** Professor Harding takes up the story Chris and I sat holding hands. We were both sitting alongside Brookmeyer, who was now thankfully sleeping. His nose bleed had finally stopped. Earlier Chris had helped me, restraining Brookmeyer, while I tried to manipulate his nose back in to a better position. This was, of course, really painful, and more than once, Daniel had begged me to stop and leave it as it was. But professionally, I was really concerned he would have difficulty breathing through his nose in the future if I did nothing. Of course, my manipulation had started it bleeding all over again. It had taken a while to stop, so I decided it would be best if I stayed with him overnight, just to make sure he was okay. I had thanked Chris and told him to head off to bed. He flatly refused. Chris had hugged me, "No, I am staying with you tonight." "No Chris, you need your sleep." But he wouldn't hear of it. "No! I am staying with you." He had said somewhat angrily. Then smiled, "I love you, remember!" So here we were smiling, no, grinning at each other, holding each other's hands like love struck teenagers. I mouthed, "I love you." He smiled and winked, "And I love you too." ** Forts takes up the story the following morning "Come in, son." Athol smiled up as I came into the office. I could tell from the smiles on Athol's and Archie's faces they were pleased to see me. And even more, that I was back wearing my long kilt. Even I had to agree, I looked dashing in it, my figure really suiting the high cut of the Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket. Dad smiled as he looked me up and down. "Where is Davy?" "He has gone for a walk with Vlad, they are taking Draco and Andrew out in the pram." Dad nodded. "That's a shame, I wanted to tell him Gethin had to leave very early this morning, there was a plane at Dyce he needed to catch, what with the king's visit being delayed for now, he had to get back to work. I hope Davy will understand why he didn't get a chance to say a proper goodbye to anyone." "I am sure he will, dad. It is not as if Gethin is a stranger here, now." We all chuckled. * The three of us sat discussing all that had been happening, trying to make sense of it and work out who was behind it all. I sighed as dad listed everything again. "Darius says we shouldn't trust Lillis." I blurted it out. Dad looked surprised, "Why? He always seems very pleasant to me." He chuckled, "Too nice, actually." I nodded, trying to remember every interaction I had with him. "He is the same with me, practically fawning whenever I am about... Dad, did you hear what he had said to Chris?" Dad nodded. "I only just finished telling Archie before you came in. If you mean about calling him a mere Baronet." "Well, yes, that... Dad, Chris had just caught him bullying Drew!" "Forts, son, McPhee, is a Master here now. He cannot swear at or threaten pupils, no matter what they say to him." "But dad." My sentence was interrupted by the phone. Athol smiled, "One minute, son." I nodded and crossed to the window, staring down at the courtyard. I smiled to myself, seeing Davy and Vlad appear. Davy was proudly pushing the pram and little Andrew was tottering along, holding Vlad's hand. They appeared to be talking to someone else who was just out of my line of vision. I strained to see who it was. Ah, it was Lillis. As I watched them come to a halt, I was conscious of Dad's voice behind me as he spoke on the phone. "Gary, hello. Of course, I am pleased to hear from you." I spun round, mouthing, "Is that Gary?" Dad nodded smiling, "Gary, Forts is here, waving hello, do you want to speak to him too?... Gary, yes of course I am listening... Gary, please don't worry yourself about such things..." Athol covered the mouthpiece mouthing, to us both, "He has heard about the events going on here." "Sorry Gary, what did you say?... Brian told you what?" I watched the colour drain from Dad's face. "Gary, are you quite sure?" He now had the full attention of both Archie and myself. "Gary, wait one minute." He covered the mouthpiece, "It's LILLIS! He is behind it all. He is the one who beat up Drew, Brian, and Brookmeyer and pulled up all the plants." I spun back to the window. Lillis was still standing with Davy and Vlad, they all appeared to be laughing. I exhaled, shaking my head; maybe Gary was mistaken. I was about to turn back when Lillis seemed to point towards the paddock. Both Davy and Vlad turned to look where he was pointing. Then it happened. With Davy and Vlad distracted, quick as a flash, Lillis kicked out, sending the pram toppling over to the gravel throwing Draco out onto the stones. As Davy and Vlad stood momentarily shocked, Lillis leapt forward and grabbed up Draco from the gravel. "FUCK! NO!" I dashed from the room. Archie and Dad shouting after me, "What is it?" As I ran I heard dad, shouting, "I will ring back Gary. Something has happened." I flew down the stairs in a couple of leaps and out into the courtyard. Lillis was handing Draco back to a distraught Davy. I ran over, Davy looked in total shock, "He is okay, Lillis rescued him." My fist crashed into Lillis' nose, sending a fine spray of blood into the air, "DID HE FUCK!" I was lost in a red mist, my second punch sent Lillis to the gravel and I leapt astride him. Pounding my fists into his face, reducing it to a bloody pulp. I could hear Davy screaming at me. Vlad was trying to pull me off, but I wasn't going to let that happen. Then I heard the voice, calming and yet obviously in total agreement with my actions. "It's okay Forts... That's enough, I will take it from here." It was Darius. He helped me up just as Dad and Archie arrived. Archie got straight down next to the barely moaning Lillis. Dad sounded stunned, "Christ, someone get the Professor. Forts, what have you done?" Davy was shouting, pointing at me. "Lillis just rescued Draco from the pram, it had toppled. I don't know what got into him!" Darius still had his arm round me, "Actually Davy, Athol, it was Lillis who kicked over the pram. I saw him do it and I take it by his reaction, so did Forts." I felt myself nodding. Davy glanced at Vlad, then Darius, confusion all over his face. "He kicked the pram over deliberately, but why?" Darius explained, "From what I have been witnessing over the last few days, so he could play the hero to the rescue. Think about it, who has appeared having saved the day with every incident so far?" Dad mumbled, his voice barely audible, "Lillis." Archie coughed, "Excuse me, but that doesn't matter right now, will someone hurry up Harding! This boy is seriously hurt." Archie was looking really worried. He was trying to clear some of the blood away from Lillis' mouth. He must have realised none of us had moved, he barked, "Someone get Harding NOW!" ********************** Folks, I really hope you're enjoying the story.
