Copyright 2009 --------------------------------- Pensacola - Chapter 15 --------------------------------- Josh was on a two event day... a formation flight in the morning followed by an instrument navigation simulator in the afternoon. The squadron scheduling officer had been instructed to push a few of the top students a little faster in order to fill the September Jet Training classes forming at the Naval Air Stations in Meridian, Mississippi and Kingsville, Texas. Josh didn't really care for flying the simulator in that it didn't give him the same exhilaration as actually lifting into the air while in control of over 2 tons of aircraft. As the second hop of the day, however, Josh welcomed the air conditioned comfort of the simulator building. Josh was practicing flying `cross-country' to different airfields and executing instrument approaches where the simulator instructor, Commander Fowler, had set the weather to be near zero visibility. Josh thought it was cool how he could keep his head inside the cockpit, flying only by instruments almost all of the way until touchdown, and then look up and see the runway appear in front of him through the clouds. He couldn't wait to do it for real in the airplane. Every approach Josh flew wasn't perfect, however, and the runway wasn't always right in front of him when he broke out of the clouds. On a couple of approaches, the runway was offset either right or left because Josh had not diligently hawked his instruments all the way down the glide slope. Josh was a little preoccupied because Ryan was going to have his evaluation board later that afternoon and he was very concerned about the well-being of his boyfriend as well as the outcome of the board. Josh knew he was supposed to compartmentalize everything else when he climbed into the cockpit, but he continually had trouble doing this. Josh wasn't sure if he was just too emotional or what, but when something was bothering him, he simply couldn't forget about it, even when he had the more important task of flying before him. Josh was getting better at flying with his troubles, however, even though he couldn't forget them completely. CDR Fowler had praise for him and gave him high marks, even if Josh wasn't terribly pleased with his own performance. Following his debriefing at the simulator building, Josh hopped into his BMW and raced towards the Training Squadron Six building. He wanted to make sure that he saw Ryan before his board to offer some emotional support. The shrill of a police siren sounded behind him and he noticed the flashing lights of a Military Police car in the rear view mirror. "Shit!!!" screamed Josh as he pounded his fists onto the steering wheel and pulled over. "Now I'm never going to make it to meet Ryan in time!" he fretted to himself. Josh rolled down his window and greeted the Military Policeman. "Good afternoon Staff Sergeant" Josh used the Marine's military rank. "Good afternoon sir" the MP greeted Josh and saluted him after noticing his officer insignia. Josh sharply returned the salute. "Are you aware that the speed limit on this road is 20 miles per hour sir? I just clocked you at 42!" the sergeant stated. Josh always thought the speed limits on base were ridiculously low, but perhaps he was overdoing it a bit this time. "I wasn't aware that I was going that fast, I am just trying to get over to the flight line to catch another pilot" Josh tried to explain. "Well, I'm sorry sir, but the Commanding Officer has ordered us to ticket every driver who is in excess of 5 mph over the posted speed limit no matter who they are" the sergeant explained. Right now Josh really didn't care what the MP did as long as he did it quickly, he was afraid he might miss Ryan. "May I see your driver's license, military ID, and proof of insurance please sir?" the sergeant asked Josh. "Certainly" Josh replied. "Is there any chance we could finish this up quickly though, I really am in a hurry" Josh added. "If I may say so sir, isn't that what got you into trouble here in the first place? You really need to take your time and slow down" the MP sternly suggested. "Time is a luxury I just don't have right now!" Josh continued somewhat frustrated. Josh mostly kept his cool though. He remembered an incident about a month ago when another pilot tried to pull rank and assert authority over one of the base cops and got in a lot of trouble for it. After that, an order came down from the Commanding Officer that the MPs essentially had his authority to complete their duties. After 15 or 20 minutes, Josh was back on his way. "You would think they would put the simulator building right next to the flight line" Josh thought as he drove along at 20 mph. "After all, that's where the pilots hang-out and that's who uses the fucking simulators" he sarcastically jeered to himself. He parked and ran into the building. He didn't immediately see Ryan, so he ran to the duty desk to ask the Assistant Squadron Duty Officer. "Petty Officer Owens, have you seen Ensign Young?" Josh asked the ASDO. "I believe he's in the conference room with the Department Heads, sir" Petty Officer Owens replied. "Thanks Owens" Josh returned the courtesy. "Shit!! I missed him... I hope he's ok!" Josh thought worriedly. He began pacing the corridor. He was really concerned that he hadn't been there for Ryan when Ryan really needed him. "Damn it!" he thought. Josh's thoughts suddenly went to Brandon, he really hadn't been there much for him lately either. Both he and Ryan had been grossly neglecting Brandon for the past several days. Josh justified this to himself in that they had a more immediate problem to deal with preparing for Ryan's evaluation board, but he had never really taken the time to explain it to Brandon. He had only seen Brandon once in the past three days and then only briefly. Josh visualized the sad look on Brandon's face when Josh put him off yet again. The same face that used to shine, matching Brandon's bubbly personality had looked at Josh sullenly and with hope of some attention. Josh also remembered his recent promise to Brandon that he would make things like they were. "I'll make it up to him this weekend" Josh promised himself. Josh realized that he might be waiting in that corridor for a while, so he found a chair and sat down. =============== Brandon sat in the bleachers at the high school, holding his hand up to shade his eyes so he could see John running down the field. John received the soccer ball, dodged two opposing players and then passed the ball to one of his teammates. "God he's getting good!" Brandon thought to himself. "Those dudes are older and bigger than him and he's running around them like they aren't even there!" Brandon had been totally devoting his time to John recently as Josh and Ryan appeared to have abandoned him. "Josh said something about them getting Ryan ready for some important interview or something" Brandon recollected. "I guess I knew it would eventually happen... Hanging out with a punk like me was gonna lose its fun sooner or later" Brandon concluded. This was one reason he was so happy to have found John. Brandon never thought he would ever meet any more boys that had the same secret desires that he had. John and he had been hanging out each afternoon after soccer camp. They would watch television and laugh about the kind of mindless bullshit that Brandon just couldn't enjoy with Josh. Steve was always fun for this kind of horseplay too, but Steve seemed to have his own preoccupation these days. Ever since they went to New Orleans, where Steve got his hands on some real female tits, he seemed only interested in chasing girls. Brandon had noticed that Steve didn't appear to be having too much luck, but it gave him a purpose in life so it was probably a good thing. Steve had also noticed that Brandon had been hanging with John a lot, and wondered why Brandon would want to hang with that `stuck-up jock'. "No, he's cool!" insisted Brandon. Brandon hoped that Steve stayed busy with his pussy hunt and didn't analyze John's and his relationship too much. Steve was wise enough to figure it out, given a chance. Brandon and John didn't need to have someone at their school with this `inside knowledge'. So Brandon and John would mess around each afternoon and they both began to get a bit attached to the other. Brandon enjoyed John's company, and certainly the hot sex! But he still wasn't completely ready to give up on Josh yet. There was a `quality' to the time that he spent with Josh that he just didn't have with John. Brandon was never very good at dealing with stress and this dilemma, this duplicity of loyalty, was wearing on him. "I really need to discuss this with John" he thought. "You watching me play or staring at some other guy" John laughingly broke into Brandon's thoughts. The practice had broken up and John had managed to climb all the way up into the bleachers before Brandon, lost in thought, had even noticed. "No dude! I was watching you and thought you were playing really good!" Brandon insisted. "What do you think I'm best at?" questioned John. "I think it's cool how you can pass out of double coverage!" Brandon praised. "Ya, I was doin that pretty good today" agreed John, enjoying the moment of admiration from Brandon. "Let's get outta here" John suggested. "It's my mom's day off" Brandon said disappointedly. "We can hang at my house, and she would prolly like to meet you, but I guess we won't be able to fool around much" Brandon explained. "That's cool, I'll meet ur mom" John agreed. As they walked towards Brandon's trailer, they kicked John's soccer ball and passed it between them. Brandon, with John's coaching, was getting better too! "Mom, this is John" Brandon introduced. "Nice to meet you John, do you go to school with Brandon?" Jane inquired. "Yes maam, we're in the same grade and I just live a few blocks from here" John gracefully replied. "How nice!" Jane replied. After some more small talk, Jane commented "I haven't seen Josh in a while" "He and Ryan have got somthin goin with the Navy and they're too busy for me right now" Brandon said somewhat dejected. "Well that's too bad, but it's nice you have another friend to play with in the meantime" Jane replied. "Mom, I don't play anymore!" Brandon protested, a little embarrassed. "Of course you don't honey, I'm sorry" Jane apologized. Brandon and John went into Brandon's room, closed the door, and lay down on Brandon's mattress. "Hey Brandon, wanna Play!" John joked about Jane's comment. "Fuck you!" Brandon laughed and began untangling the wires to the controllers for the Nintendo. John put a hand on Brandon's chest, leaned over, and kissed him on the neck. "Wait till I get this untangled, dude!" Brandon giggled. "That can wait" John said softly as he ran his hand through Brandon's shoulder length hair. Brandon giggled again as he turned his head and kissed John. "Do you boys want some snacks?" Jane called through Brandon's door. Both boys flinched and pulled apart. "Sure mom, we'll come out there in a minute" yelled Brandon in reply. John and Brandon looked at each other with a grin as they considered the possibility of `getting caught'. John placed his lips back on Brandon's and they allowed each others tongues to pass into the other's mouth. Their tongues poked and caressed each others as their hands found bare skin under their t-shirts. "Shit, I feel dirty. I didn't even shower after practice" John confided. "I'll take you clean or dirty!" giggled Brandon. They went back to making out. "Now I got a boner!" exclaimed Brandon. "Me too!" laughed John. "We gotta let these go down so we can go out and get our snack" suggested Brandon. So, they started playing with the Nintendo. A few minutes later, they went out to the kitchen to snack on the milk and Oreos that Jane had put out for them. Jane spent a few minutes talking with them and then went outside to work in the yard. She would ask Brandon to help her when she was doing yard maintenance, but she knew Brandon didn't really like it, so when she was just tending flowers, she would just enjoy the garden by herself. The boys finished their snack and returned to Brandon's room. Brandon grabbed the controllers for the Nintendo, but John had another idea and reached over to Brandon. "Dude! My mom is just outside. She could come in at any moment!" Brandon warned with a chuckle. "It's not like I'm gonna fuck ya dude... I just want a little skin!" John laughed. Brandon had kept his pledge to Josh and had never gone that far with John. Brandon had been thinking about it lately and wished that they had kept the pledge to each other and had never gone that far with Ryan either. Sure, he had enjoyed it, but it had changed everything. John ran his hand under Brandon's t-shirt and rubbed his tight smooth belly as he leaned in for another kiss. Brandon eagerly met his lips and moaned slightly when John's hand reached his nipple. Brandon's shorts were noticeably `tenting'. John looked down at his crotch and then back to Brandon's eyes giving him a knowing grin. John lowered his hand and grabbed Brandon's hard-on through his thin plaid shorts. "Looks like ur ready to go!" John joked. "Shit! When you rub and kiss me, I get a hard-on, I can't help it!" Brandon laughingly defended himself. John continued to stroke it through Brandon's shorts and then put his hand on his belt buckle and began to undo it. "Dude! My mom!" Brandon protested. John covered Brandon's mouth with his as he finished undoing his pants. After John had Brandon's hard boy meat in his hand, he lowered his head and took his shaft into his mouth. "aaaghhh!" Brandon moaned as he grabbed John's head and pushed it deeper onto his cock. John lifted his head momentarily and scolded Brandon "Fuck dude! Ur the one that's gonna get us in trouble, not me!" John replaced his mouth onto Brandon's boyhood and resumed sucking with all the sexual energy of a teenage boy. Brandon lifted his hips and began pumping them towards John's mouth as the sexual tension began to rise. John stayed on him, relentlessly sucking and licking. Brandon grabbed John's head and started pumping his boy juice into him. Finally, John pulled off his cock head as Brandon begged for some relief. They laid back on the bed and recovered from the sexual frenzy. John turned onto his side and looked at Brandon and gave him a smile. Brandon, though, got a real serious expression on his face as he looked back at John. "Hey! We didn't get caught dude!" John laughed at Brandon's solemn look. But Brandon's demeanor remained serious. "What's up dude?" John asked. "Man, I really like you. I'm even gettin kinda attached to ya" Brandon confided. "Ya, me too" John giggled in agreement. "But I gotta tell you bout something..." Brandon began. "I'm kinda in a relationship with Josh right now." "Fuck, Really?" John asked in a disappointed tone. "Shit, I was kinda wonderin if you were doin something with Josh, or maybe even Ryan, but I really didn't think Navy guys like that could be gay" John observed. "Actually, I'm boyfriends with both Josh and Ryan, but that's all fucked up right now" Brandon clarified. "Well fuck! Where does that leave me?" complained John. "I was really liking you, and now your telling me you already have two boyfriends?!" John continued. "I'm sorry dude" Brandon sniffled a little. "I honestly can't tell you where I stand with those guys right now. They don't have time for me... They got all their Navy shit goin on" Brandon explained. "So what are u gonna do? If they don't have time for you, then you can be with me, right?" John reasoned. "Fuck!!! I don't know what to do... I used to have this amazing thing goin with Josh and it's just been falling apart lately – but I don't know if I'm ready to throw it away" Brandon groaned. "Well, give me a call when you fuckin figure it out" John said curtly as he gathered his stuff to leave. "John!!" Brandon cried. "What the fuck dude?! Do you just expect me to make out with you while you decide which of your 3 boys you want to keep! That's fucked up!" John yelled. John got up and left the trailer quickly. Jane did not hear the conversation, but through the thin walls of the trailer, she could tell the boys were having an argument. Brandon followed John out onto the deck and then realized that he couldn't make a scene in front of his mother and so he turned back to his room. Jane could see that Brandon was crying. Jane watched John run off down the street and then followed Brandon back inside. "Brandon!!" Jane called as she knocked on his door. "Please go away mom" Brandon cried. Jane was concerned for her boy. He had been doing so well since he met Josh... He was more confident, more polite, used better language, and had been doing better in school. But suddenly, Josh appeared to be too busy for Brandon. And then, just when Brandon looked like he had a new friend, he has a major fight with him. "Maybe I'll give Josh a call" Jane thought to herself. Josh's phone rang; he was surprised that Brandon was calling from the land-line in the trailer. "Hey Brandon" Josh answered. "Actually Josh, this is Jane. I'm calling because I'm concerned about Brandon." "What's the problem?!" Josh sat up worriedly. "He's convinced that you are too busy and don't want to see him anymore. Steve doesn't come around anymore, and now he has this new friend, John, that just stormed out of here leaving Brandon a crying mess. Brandon won't even talk to me, I don't know what to do" Jane fussed. "Will you talk to him?" Jane suggested. Josh listened to all of this and thought to himself "God, can everything get any worse?!" Josh pondered for a moment... Ryan would probably come out of the conference room at any moment; he just couldn't talk to Brandon right now because he would need to devote his attention to Ryan as soon as he came out. "Maam..." Josh addressed Jane. "I have neglected Brandon lately and god I'm so sorry for it, but I have a really pressing issue at the moment that I have to deal with" Josh explained. "I understand that you're a busy man Josh. Perhaps when you get some time?" Jane suggested hopefully. "Absolutely!" Josh agreed. "I will call him later tonight and I will make it up to him this weekend, I promise!" Josh assured her. After Josh was off the phone, he leaned forward and put his face in his hands. He finally started realizing that it might not be humanly possible to be a totally devoted boyfriend to two different guys at the same time. =============== "Ensign Young, stand at attention" ordered Lieutenant Commander John Putnam. Ryan stood in his freshly pressed khaki uniform with his chest out, chin back, and his thumbs along the seam of his trousers. Other than the golden bars of his officer rank and his name tag, the front of his uniform was bare. Ryan had hoped to one day tack Navy Wings of Gold above his left breast pocket. He stood before a long table with a green table cloth. There were three senior officers at the table. They were the heads of three of the squadron's five departments... Operations, Maintenance, and Safety. Each Officer sat facing Ryan as his heart beat raced and his brow moistened with an impending sweat. "The purpose of this Field Naval Aviation Evaluation Board is to investigate the circumstances which led Ensign Ryan Young to lose control of his T-34 aircraft on the afternoon of July 17th" LCDR Putnam began. "Ensign, it is my duty to inform you that all statements made here will be entered into your official record. Do you understand this?" "Yes sir!" Ryan answered smartly. "Ensign, you may be seated." "I do not need to remind you Ensign that we are in an inherently dangerous business here. Both lives and very expensive equipment that the taxpayers entrust to us are at stake" the lieutenant commander stated rhetorically. "We will start with the statement made by LT Ron Garcia on your Aviation Training Form for the flight in question..." said LCDR Putnam. Ryan watched as the senior officer picked up his ATF that was stamped in large red letters: `Unsatisfactory Event'. "Ensign Young had extreme difficultly controlling the relative motion between his aircraft and the lead aircraft from the beginning of the flight" LCDR Putnam began reading. "While in parade formation, inverted during a section aileron roll Ensign Young began hyperventilating and over-controlled the stick causing diverging oscillations." "When instructed to get the relative motion back under control, Ensign Young lost his nerve and took evasive action to increase wing-tip separation. This action caused the aircraft to depart and Ensign Young made no effort to recover it" after reading this, LCDR Putnam put the form down on the table and glared at Ryan. "This says that you caused your aircraft to depart controlled flight and then did nothing to rectify it! Can you explain this Ensign!" the senior officer demanded. Josh had practiced grilling Ryan for the past two days with every question that they could possibly imagine that Ryan could be asked. They wanted to make sure Ryan took responsibility for his actions, but at the same time appeared confident about the future. "There is no excuse for my actions sir. I lost control of the aircraft and was slow to initiate recovery. But, if Lt Garcia had not been present, I would have recovered the aircraft myself" Ryan responded. "Ensign Young, can you define uncontrolled flight for us" asked LCDR Dunn, one of the other officers on the panel. "It's a ballistic state of the aircraft where the control surfaces have been rendered ineffective by insufficient airflow or airflow at an angle of attack inconsistent with the formation of lift. If there is any yaw, this condition will typically develop into an upright or inverted spin" Ryan answered assertively. "And, how do you recover from uncontrolled flight?" LCDR Dunn probed. "Neutralize the controls to avoid introducing yaw" Ryan answered promptly. "And if yaw is present and the aircraft begins to spin?" the lieutenant commander continued. "If the spin is upright - full rudder opposite the turn needle... if the spin is inverted, full rudder with the turn needle, sir" Ryan confidently replied. "Ok, so you've shown that you would have likely recovered the aircraft on your own in the absence of the flight instructor, but how do you explain getting into this situation in the first place?!" demanded LCDR Snyder, the third officer on the panel. "Once again sir, there is no excuse for my actions. I lost my cool and at that moment, and I felt that a greater distance between the aircraft would be safer" Ryan explained. "And what would keep you from doing the same thing again?" LCDR Snyder drilled him. "I have now experienced first hand how erratic control inputs at slow speed can depart the aircraft... I know, from those results that it was not a good solution, I would not repeat that sir" Ryan assured him. "So how do you think you would be able to overcome this problem and continue successfully through the program?" LCDR Putnam questioned. "I believe that I began flying formation aerobatics before I was completely proficient at flying formation while straight and level" Ryan replied. "I believe that remedial formation training would eliminate this deficiency, sir" Ryan concluded. "So the syllabus is at fault then?" LCDR Dunn snapped back. "No sir, I'm at fault, I just wasn't moving as fast as the syllabus" Ryan calmly but deliberately replied. "Very well Ensign, I think we have the information we need. We will make our recommendations to the commanding officer." LCDR Putnam concluded. "You are dismissed." When Ryan came out of the conference room, Josh was quickly by his side. "I'm sorry I didn't get here before you went in... How did it go dude?" Josh hurriedly asked. "Let's just get out of here" replied Ryan. They went to the parking lot and hopped into the Beamer. "So?..." Josh asked hopefully as he pulled out of the parking lot. Ryan began to weep quietly. He had held his composure well during his board and now the emotions involved were catching up to him. Josh interpreted this emotional display as: `it had not gone well' and just stayed silent. "I really do like flying. I really do wanna be part of this brotherhood and earn my Wings of Gold Josh" Ryan lightly sobbed. "I know you do buddy" Josh agreed. They drove in silence as Ryan contemplated the responses he made to the panel's questions. After 15 minutes or so, Ryan spoke up. "I guess it went as well in there as it possibly could have" Ryan concluded. "I did it just like we practiced dude." "Really?! So what did they say?" Josh perked up. "Nothing... They just said they would make their recommendation to the CO" replied Ryan. "They're gonna put you back on the flight schedule dude... I just know they will" Josh said hopefully. "I hope so" agreed Ryan somewhat doubtfully. =============== Josh and Ryan spent the evening discussing how the board had gone, how they might have been able to better prepare Ryan for it, and how the panel might have interpreted each of Ryan's answers. Then they discussed the skills of formation flying. "I visualize just the lead aircraft and block out everything else I see behind it" Josh explained. "Then it doesn't matter whether we're right-side-up or up-side-down." "Ya, the plane really feels pretty much the same no matter what attitude the formation is in" Ryan agreed. "Then all you have to do is stop the relative motion" Josh continued. "Well, I know you can do it well... I've seen you fly beautiful formation!" Ryan praised Josh's skills as an aviator. "Thanks dude! Now we just gotta make sure that you get the chance to learn it well too" Josh insisted. Ryan went home fairly early as the scheduling office had scheduled him to be the Squadron Duty Officer the next day. By scheduling a grounded pilot to stand duty, they freed up another pilot to fly. SDO was a 24 hour watch, 6am Friday to 6am Saturday where he would handle many of the administrative affairs of the squadron while he assisted the Flight Duty Officer with assigning aircraft and running the flight schedule. He would stand duty at the desk in the ready room until the last plane was safe on deck and then he would retire to the Officer's Quarters on base where he would be on call through the night while a petty officer standing the Assistant Squadron Duty Officer watch would man the phones and the squadron spaces. Josh took this opportunity to call Brandon. It had been about 4 hours now since John stormed out of Brandon's trailer, but Brandon was still lightly sobbing because he felt so abandoned by everybody. "Why does everything have to be so difficult? he brooded to himself. Brandon's phone rang and he reached for it with a hopeful look. If it was a solicitor or a wrong number or something, he thought he would probably go crazy. He really needed some compassion at the moment. His screen read "JOSH" and he eagerly pressed `Send'. "Hello?" Brandon answered with hope and apprehension. "Hey lil buddy" Josh replied in a quiet conciliatory tone. Just the sound of his voice and hearing Josh use his little pet name made Brandon feel better. "Hey Josh!" Brandon chirped. "Gosh lil buddy, I am so sorry about what has happened lately" Josh began. "What's going on is that Ryan is in trouble with the Navy for screwing up on a flight. He could get thrown out of flight school, or maybe even the Navy!" "Shit!" Brandon exclaimed as he listened. "No wonder they have been so preoccupied" he thought. "But if they were bonding together to give Ryan support, why didn't they include me?" Brandon considered further. "So what's gonna happen to him?" asked Brandon. "Don't know yet... He had an evaluation board this afternoon and now he has to wait for the Commanding Officer to make a decision" Josh replied. "We've spent the last few days trying to get him ready to answer the questions from that board" Josh tried to explain his absence from Brandon further. The more Brandon thought about this, however, the more he felt that he should have been included, or at least informed of Ryan's trouble. He felt kind of like Josh and Ryan didn't look at him as a true partner. "Ur bein kinda quiet sweetie" Josh observed. "Ya, im just thinkin" Brandon replied quietly. "Whatcha thinkin bout?" Josh probed. "Just us... you and me... you, me and Ryan" Brandon answered cheerlessly. Josh could tell that Brandon was on the verge of tears. "Now ur scaring me lil buddy! I really am sorry. I don't know why I have been shutting you out lately" Josh started sobbing a little himself. "Im gonna make this up to you this weekend Brandon, I promise!" Josh continued. "What about Ryan? Don't you need to hang with him since he's got trouble?" Brandon questioned. "No, Im gonna spend the whole weekend with you sweetie, I want to so bad" Josh reassured Brandon. "But Ryan is gonna come around" said Brandon. It was at this moment that Brandon truly realized to himself that he wanted Josh back... all to himself. He did love Ryan, or at least he thought he did, he wasn't sure, but what he was sure about was that he wanted Josh's attention again. All of it! "Ryan has duty tomorrow all day. He even has to stay on base tomorrow night" said Josh "Maybe you could come over and stay the night?" Josh asked hopefully. "Ya, that would be awesome!" Brandon perked up at the thought of having his Josh all to himself for the night. "Do you spose ur mom will think that's ok?" Josh questioned. "Ya, she'll be happy. She wants me to start hangin with you again" Brandon replied. "Sweet!" said Josh with a smile. --------------------------------- Im sorry about the long delay in posting this chapter.
