Chapter One __________ "What is this place?" I grunted quietly as my eyes began to open to unfamiliar surroundings. Only minutes before I had been on a battlefield with the moon shining brightly above me. This was definitely not familiar territory. All that I remembered was running towards the enemy and the next moment absolutely nothing. It was as though an entire portion of my life had been completely deleted. I quickly tried to sit up, undoubtedly in the hands of the enemy, but was met by an extremely sharp pain in my abdomen that caused spots to appear before my eyes. I yelled out in agony as a soft hand caressed the side of my face. "Please don't try to get up, you must heal first." I looked before me at what could only be perceived as an angel. Two beautiful sky blue eyes stared at my gently from a soft pale face, silhouetted by long red hair that lay gently on this angels shoulders. She couldn't have been more than nine years old but the look on this child's face was the most beautiful I had ever had the privilage of seeing. I raised my hand and was met by her grasping mine with both of hers. The softness of her hands was tremendous and made a soothing feeling wash over me. "Please my lady, forgive my intrusion..." The angel giggled a little at my words, to which I was slightly confused. However my queries would soon be met by a reply from her soft voice once more. "I'm not a lady, I'm a boy." These words took me back a little. Surely nothing this beautiful could be male. I quickly attempted to think of the words to apologise but they failed me. I couldn't recall ever seeing a boy, or a girl for that matter, more beautiful than this. "I'm... sorry... it's just.... well...." But I was silenced as he gently pressed his finger to my lips. "Forget about it, you won't be the first nor the last person to call me a girl. Anyway I just want to make sure you get to feeling better. Does it hurt badly?" He asked me softly with a look of general concern on his face. "It is only a slight discomfort... how did I come to this place?" His eyes trailed to a door on the other side of the room for a moment, obviously something on his mind. Perhaps his Mother was lurking nearby or perhaps he was indeed with the enemy. "I came to the field once the battle was over to see if anyone had survived. There weren't many left there and then I saw you. You still had some color in your cheeks and I could see your chest rising and falling. It took awhile, but I managed to get you here. I figured it was the best I could do to help." I suddenly knew that I was indeed in enemy territory. I knew that I should be frightened but this child seemed to be a calm voice amoung the storm. I felt I had nothing to fear here. Senseing my reproach he quickly responded to quell my fears. "Please don't worry, nobody knows that you're here. I live here by myself since Mama passed on. I hid your uniform when I brought you back and I don't think that they think anyone survived. They don't come around here very much anyway." I nodded in understanding and appreciation. He had sacrificed his own safety on the battlefield to help someone. Not because of their national origin or for some political cause, but because he truly wanted to be a good samaritan. It was refreshing. The thought of my army losing this battle seemed somehow distorted by this singular act of kindness. I suddenly wondered how Selistia was faring at this point, but it was no longer of any concern. I finally had an opportunity to escape the horrors of war. I had grown weary of becoming a drone, merely at the command of a vicious Emporer who cared only for his own ambitions. The meaning of preservation of my people had long ago faded into selfishness and greed. The sole reason why I even chose to join the army had long departed. "Are you hungry?" The boy gently asked causing me to arouse from my thoughts. "A tad..." I replied quietly with respect, not wanting this boy to go any farther out of his way than he already had. The boy smiled gently and stood, he was small for his age but well fed to be an orphan. A long gray shirt sat losely on his shoulders and draped all the way down to his knees. Whether he had pants on or not I wasn't sure but nothing was revealed by any means. "I'll be back." He spoke with remarkable energy as he turned and left the room, quietly closing the door behind him. I sat up a little grimacing at the persistent pain in my abdomen. I took in everything around me. The walls were a light shade of lavender with thick white linen curtains covering a large window before me. The bed and furniture was a dark mahogany and the floor was covered in an odd looking floral rug. It was obviously clean and well kept, although a single look of masculinity escaped the surroundings entirely. It almost reminded me of my childhood home in Selistia. Mothers really had an obsession with cleanliness and it definitely felt that way here. The fact that a young boy managed to keep this home in such a pristine condition was truly a testiment to his rearing. For the first time I allowed my hand to travel to my face, a bandage had been neatly applied to my forehead but everything else seemed to be fine. This boy had done a fine job doctoring me up and for that I was grateful. Death on the battlefield, regardless of how heroic it may be, was not my ideal way to depart this sphere. I was slightly disturbed as the door opened and I saw the boy carry in a large silver tray with a bowl upon it. The tray must have been half his height and he truly looked adorable carrying it. As he sat it on the bed before me I could see a light yellow liquid inside, undoubtedly some sort of soup. "I hope that it's alright, I haven't had a chance to walk to town lately." The boy smiled at my gently and climbed onto the bed before me on his knees. He gently laid a white linen napkin on my lap and possitioned the tray to where it would be easy to access. I returned his smile and was once again amazed by his beauty. I was neither gay, nor a lover of children, but this boy had something special about him. Something that made me want to inhale his essence entirely and keep him nearby. His eyes watched me eagerly awaiting my eating of this soup. I took the spoon from the tray and began to dip it into the bowl, the soup had a creamy consistency and the moving of the substance caused vegetables to surface. I looked back into his eyes. "Thank you very much." I nodded to him and rose the spoon to my lips and gently allowed it to enter my mouth. At first it tasted a tad strange, perhaps from the fact that I actually hadn't eaten anything homemade in some time, but then I began to chew the vegetables and a warm feeling came over me. I couldn't help but smile. "This is delicious." The boy giggled in delight and bounced a little. It was impossibly adorable. "Thank you very much i'm glad that you like it!" I managed to shovel a few more spoonfulls into my mouth before I felt it rude not to break the silence. "What is your name?" "I'm Saiden." He replied with a slight nod. "I very much like that name Saiden. I am Tyler." Saiden nodded. "I saw that on your uniform Mr. Tyler." I couldn't help but laugh a little at that. "Please just call me Tyler, if anything I should call you Mr. Saiden." Saiden giggled again "We can just agree to call each other by our names then." He seemed impossibly happy to be in my presence. I silently wondered if it was because of his lack of social contact or if he felt something of a friend to me. Regardless of what it was I was merely please to be safe with him here. I ate the rest of my soup in haste, a habit nurtured by the army and made even more present by the emptiness of my stomache. Saiden smiled and began to dab my mouth with the linen napkin that he had laid gently on my lap only minutes ago. "You must have been telling the truth, you ate that very quickly!" I nodded in response. "It was very good, it reminds me of home actually." Saiden seemed quite content with the compliment as he slid off the bed and began to collect the tray into a managable pile. He removed it and placed it on a table next to the door and returned, his small hands pushing me gently so as to say to lay down. "You need your rest Tyler, I know that you may want to stay up but you need to heal." I nodded gently to him and whispered another thank you as he returned to the tray and left me alone again. My eyes focused on the ceiling above me and the wooden beams that supported it. I half expected Saiden not to return but as quickly as he departed, he returned with a small porcelain basin with a clean wash cloth dangling from the side. He sat it on the floor next to the bed and began to pull the blankets that covered me down a little. His small hands found the buttons of a dark blue shirt that covered me and loosened them gently, spreading my shirt open and exposing a bloody bandage that covered the obvious location of my abdominal pain. He began to remove it slowly. A grimaced a little as a pain shot through me and he quickly looked at me in concern. "Are you alright?" I nodded slightly and watched him carefully as he tried his best to be gentle removing the rest of the bandage. I looked at my wound for a moment, obviously a long gash caused by a sword. I wondered who had provided this blow, but it really didn't matter. Who ever it was obviously felt that it was my undoing and was probably on his way to Selistia as I laid here in this room. Saiden dipped the wash cloth in the water and rung it out gently and began to dab at the wound, to which he smiled a little. "The bleeding has stopped." He commented as he continued to do his best to clean it thoroughly, he seemed to be an expert in this and I silently wondered if I was the first soldier he had nursed to health. Apart from a slight stinging the feeling wasn't so bad. He quickly wiped away the access water and began to rebandage my wound. As soon as the last portion had been set in it's place, he rebuttoned my shirt and pulled the blanket to my chin. I watched silently as he bent over and gently kissed my cheek as a Mother would. His lips were soft and warm, and far from being disturbed by this, I welcomed it and wished that he would prolong this moment. However as soon as his lips met my face, they departed as he looked at me caringly. "Get some rest, i'll be back to check on you in the morning." Suddenly I was perplexed, wasn't it already morning? "What time is it?" I asked him with great curiosity. "Oh it's about two in the morning now." I nodded and was amazed. Somehow it hadn't felt that late but I suppose it was because I had been sleeping for so long. I nodded to him and watched as he once again left, closing the door behind him. I lay back onto the pillow and felt my eyes become heavy with exhaustion and my breathe fade to a steady pattern. I was asleep, and for the first time in a long time I knew that I wouldn't be awaken by sirens or artilery. Chapter Two __________ The sun rose slowly in the eastern sky, illimunating the linen curtains of a quiet room in the country side. Through the curtains shadows were cast on an odd looking floral rug and a soldier that laid silently on a bed with a bandage on his forehead. He had short black hair that stood straight up on his head, rather tan skin and a look of roughness that came with being a soldier. He was obviously injured from the bandage on his forehead but his breath was steady and a silent look of contentment had settled deeply into his face. As the first strands of warmth from the sunlight met his face, filtered by the linen curtains, his eyes blinked open, revealing green orbs that appeared much more wise than the rest of him. His arms rose above him as he stretched, retracting only slightly because of a pain in his abdomen. This soldier called Tyler sat up and allowed his legs to slide off the side of the bed. His feet met the floor and he rose slowly, gripping a nightstand next to him to retain his balance. With only slight difficulty he walked towards the door and opened it, looking around him quietly. He was at the end of a short hallway that was covered in an offwhite paint. Many happy pictures of a family hung on the walls depicting a happy young boy, his mother and father. Tyler frowned a little at this, seeing that this young boy was once happy and now had no one to spend his days with. He quickly closed the door to the room behind him and limped down the hall as quietly as possible. At the end of the hall he was met by the sight of a small kitchen with many cupboards and a long table. In the corner of one of the cabinets a metal tea kettle caught his eye and he happily limped over to retrieve it. He placed it under the faucet of a large sink and began to pump the wooden handle above it, a steady stream of cool spring water running into the kettle. In the distance the sound of bare feet running through the hall became louder and louder as the happy young boy from the photos appeared in the kitchen, one foot in a pair of long white pants and the other attempting to insert itself in the second leg. He tripped and fell face first onto the kitchen floor, causing Tyler to jump slightly. He limped over to the boys side who quickly sat up pulling his shirt down so as not to expose himself. "Are you alright?" Tyler asked in concern. The young boy quickly stuffed his other leg into the pants and pulled them up before standing to his full height. "I'm ok but please don't do that I can do it for you!" The young boy quickly ushered the soldier to a chair at the table and made sure that he was sitting properly. "Are you feeling ok? Can I get you anything?" Tyler laughed a little at how protective this young boy was of him. "I'm find thank you, just a cup of tea please." Tyler nodded and walked over to the sink, removing the now full tea kettle from it and placed it on a stove across the way. He grabbed a book of matches from the counter next to it and quickly lit the stove, flames encircling the base of the kettle. Tyler watched as he waved the match causing the flame to disappear in a pume of smoke and disposed of it in a trash bin nearby. He walked over to the table where Tyler sat and took a seat directly across from him, rubbing his eyes and pushing his long red hair behind him. "You really didn't have to do that you know, I am feeling much better Saiden." Saiden smiled but shook his head a little. "I don't care how well you feel, you could re-open your wound again. We have to make sure that you get completely better before you do too much. I can do anything you ask if you only just ask me." Tyler nodded in gratitude. "I thank you for that." Tyler looked over at a large clock on the wall opposite them and noticed that it was seven now, he had slept five hours and felt extremely well because of it. His gaze returned to Saiden and he decided to find out a little more about the boy. "So how old are you Saiden?" He smiled gently. "I'm ten." He replied quietly as his small eyes observed the soldier still in slight concern. Tyler nodded in response. "I thought that you were probably about ten, you are awfully short for your age though." Saiden blushed a little and looked down. Tyler suddenly became upset with himself for doing this. "I...I'm sorry! I didn't mean it as an insult!" Saiden shook his head. "No it's ok. All the kids at school used to make fun of me for being short but Mama always said that it was just a part of me, just like some kids have brown hair or green eyes." Tyler nodded in understanding. "Then you don't go to school anymore?" "Not since Mama passed on. I have just taken care of the house and since the war began not too many kids go anymore anyway. They wanted me to join the youth army but I don't think I could do it." Tyler nodded as he had heard of this youth army before. It was basically a savage training of young boys into warriors. Saiden was very fragile and sweet, he undoubtably would have faired terribly in such an organization. "I'm please that you didn't go, you are far to sweet to partake in such savagry." Saiden blushed profusely at this and kicked his legs a little causing Tyler to laugh. "Thank you Tyler..." Saiden whispered. "You are quite welcome Saiden." Much to Saiden's relief, the tea kettle began to whistle so he took the invitation the leave the embarrasing moment to retrieve the tea for Tyler. He found Tyler very handsome and enjoyed serving him greatly. Saiden would do anything to make the soldier happy and although he had only had the pleasure of talking to him since very early this morning, he had felt safe the whole time that he had been in his home and as though he had known him forever. Saiden knew that this was the sort of man this his mother would have liked. He stood the the tips of his toes and grasped a tin can from the cupboard above the stove and sat it on the counter. He fished out a small cloth wrapped around some crushed tea leaves and placed it on the bottom of a tea cup. He poured the hot water over it and placed a spoon inside the liquid. He carefully picked it up and placed it in front of Tyler. Tyler smiled in response and began to tease the tea bag with his spoon. "Thank you for that, it's been quite some time since i've been able to drink tea." Saiden nodded. "I'm sorry to hear that..." "It's quite alright it just makes me appreciate it more." Saiden nodded again in understanding. He had always been told that absense caused things to improve in quality and human company had indeed done this for him. Saiden wasn't entirely sure whether it was because it had been so long since someone had been in this house with him that made being around Tyler to great, or if it was because Tyler was special somehow. All that Saiden knew was that every time he looked at Tyler his stomache felt sort of funny. Tyler pressed the tea bag against the side of the cup and removed it, he grasped the sides of the cup and began to sip the sweet nectar into himself. It was divine and it caused a great warmth to cover him that made him feel as though he were in paradise. His eyes slammed shut as he tried to remember a better cup of tea. He couldn't think of any as he allowed another sip to pass his lips. His eyes opened slightly as he watched Saiden who was watching him in return. He could tell that Tyler was pleased with the tea so a look of contentment covered his young face. "This is incredible." Tyler commented so as to make audible that which was self explanatory. Saiden giggled again. "I'm very glad that you like it!" Tyler smiled. "I like it when you giggle it's adorable." Saiden blushed again and looked down. Tyler couldn't help but laugh. It had become something of a privilage to see Saiden blush. He was possitively adorable and Tyler couldn't view him as anything less than a perfect being. Tyler placed his hand against Saiden's face and watched as the boy timidly stared into his own eyes. "Please don't be ashamed, I just enjoy being around you. You are a very wonderful person." Saiden nodded and grinned brightly showing off a perfect set of white teeth that seemed to glow against the dark red color of his hair. "I'm sorry i'm just not used to compliments. I really think that you are wonderful too." Tyler smiled, he wasn't used to being told such things either. He was quite pleased to know that Saiden actually considered him wonderful. Although Tyler wasn't completely sure why, he felt such a strong attraction for this child that he didn't really want to fade away. Tyler would have given anything to have another kiss from him, to feel his warm lips against his face. Perhaps it was a bit wrong for him to feel these things but he never had been able to experience them before. War meant no time for love and even if the sort of love that he could have with Saiden was forbidden, he didn't really care. As Tyler took in the last sip of his tea, Saiden was quick to collect the cup and wash it. Tyler couldn't help but marvel at the cleanliness of this child. "Why is it that you are so clean?" Tyler queried. "Well I just want to make sure that everything looks as great as it did with Mama was here. Even though she's gone I want to still make her happy. She said that having me and a clean house were the things that made her the happiest." He replied with a sort of whimsical tone, as though following his deceased Mother's commands were a pleasure for him. It was hard for Tyler to imagine himself doing the same at Saiden's age. He recalled being quite messy and an agonizing force for his Mother. He supposed that it was just part of the wonderfulness that was Saiden. Indeed he was very unique. "Are you hungry?" Saiden asked as he finished putting the dried tea cup back in it's cupboard. Tyler shook his head. "Not particularly." Saiden turned towards Tyler and bowed his head a little "I need to go to town and pick up some things. Will you be alright if I leave for a bit?" Tyler laughed again. "Of course I will be, do you need me to come along?" Saiden shook his head profusely. "No! You need to rest!" Tyler sighed a little. "Very well then I will stay here. Don't worry about me though and take your time." Saiden nodded in response and smiled a little. "Do you want me to take you back to your bed?" Tyler shook his head. "That's quite alright I need to get around to heal properly. If I began to feel faint I promise I will go straight to bed." Tyler held his hand to his heart pledging to keep his word. Saiden giggled a little. "Well alright then." Saiden bent over and grabbed a large basket from under the sink. He placed it on the counter as well as another large tin container that was next to it. He pulled out some money from inside and stuffed it deep into his pockets. Grabbing the basket again he walked up to Tyler and kissed him on the cheek again, much to Tyler's great delight. "I'll be back soon." Saiden whispered in Tyler's ear and set off through a door next to the stove. Tyler stood and watched as the figure of the young angel became smaller and smaller, until nothing could be seen but the wheat swaying on a hillside before him. Tyler took the time to examine the outside, they were definitely in the country, it seemed very pure to him. The grass around the house was well kept along with many flowers. Just beyond the house fields of wheat seemed to consume everything until it met the azure sky littered with clouds. This was the sort of place that the other soldiers spoke of moving to when the war was over. Not that, that would have ever occured but it was certainly a nice thought. Tyler often imagined himself in such a place as well. With a nice cottage and a large family. It had occured to Tyler that his dreams had come true. Although it seemed to be very selfish of Tyler to intrude on the young boy's hospitality any longer than neccesary, he felt that somehow he was welcome and that for once in his life he wasn't an intrusion. At least Tyler hoped so. Tyler managed to limp out of the kitchen and found a quaint sitting room with pale yellow walls and rather well cushioned chairs that sat around a great book case. Tyler ran his fingers along the spines of the great library and noticed something familiar, "The Delusion of Regala." It was something that he recalled reading when he was very young. Careful to not disturb the other books, he removed it and gazed at the black leather cover with the title embossed in gold characters. He sat down on one of the chairs and opened it, the smell of the old pages filling his senses entirely. With each word passing the quiet tranquility of the home, the countryside and the left over warmth and contentment of the tea overcame Tyler and he found himself falling asleep. Not out of exhaustion but just a nice country nap. He would not awaken again until Saiden returned a couple hours later.
