CHAPTER 26 "We will see each other soon and you will have a good time back in the states," said Luca as he embraced Sam on the tarmac. "I know. I just wish you were coming with me," said Sam. "I don't know why, but I have this awful dread that I won't be able to come back to you. I know it's silly." "It certainly is silly. This is your home Sam. You can always come back to your home. I will be here for you. Please try to enjoy yourself. Give your parents my best and tell Ethan I said he best be staying out of trouble." "OK. I love you, Luca. You are my world." "I love you eternally, Sam." The two boys kissed deeply and hugged. Then Sam picked up his back pack and climbed the stairs into the jet, where Miko was waiting to close the door to the cabin. "You OK, Sam?" asked Cristof, with genuine concern in his voice, as the jet climbed into the morning sky. "Yeah," replied Sam, after a pause, watching the earth slip beneath him. "I'll be fine. I don't know what this feeling of dread is, but I'll be OK." Sam had arranged for his Jeep to be brought out of storage and left at the airport for him. His plan was to take it to his parents' and leave it there. He and Cristof checked into the Plaza. The suite was spacious and luxurious, with two bedrooms, two and a half baths, and a large sitting area with a balcony on the 17th floor. Sam took the smaller bedroom and Cristof settled into the master bedroom. "I'm going to take a shower," said Sam. "The desk said the wine had been delivered and I asked them to bring up what we would need to for tomorrow's meetings. Why don't you mix us up some drinks, then we'll go for dinner." Sam stripped off his shirt as he started to go down the hall to his room. Cristof stared after him, at the smooth lines of his back and the nape of his lower back as it disappeared beneath his faded jeans. Cristof sat on the over-sized chair and rubbed his thickening cock, but then shook his head and rose to mix a pitcher of Manhattans. He thought to himself, 'I cannot do that with Sam, damn it. I am his boss. Plus, Luca is a good friend. Plus he's so young...' Ten minutes later, Sam came out into the living room with just a white towel wrapped around his body. "What're we drinking?" he asked. "There are Manhattans there on the bar," replied Cristof. "So, Cris," said Sam, pouring a drink, "How about some good Italian food tonight?" "You're the tour guide," replied Cristof. "OK. I'm going to call Ethan and see if he can join us." Sam took his drink back to his room to get dressed. He called Ethan and they made arrangements to meet at their favorite restaurant for dinner. Sam was excited, as he got dressed. He was hoping to be able to spend the night with Ethan. The reunion with Ethan was not what Sam had anticipated. Ethan had shown up to the restaurant with Devin, another model, with whom he and Sam had had a threesome a few days before Sam left New York. Ethan and Devin had apparently moved in together into Devin's loft and Ethan gave up the apartment he and Sam had shared. Sam could not blame him for moving or for even moving on. Yet, Sam felt a keen disappointment, for in his mind, Ethan was still his. He knew he had no right to expect Ethan to wait for him and he knew that Ethan would always be second to Luca. Even so, he loved Ethan and was hurt. Dinner was tense and Ethan and Devin took their leave afterwards, with Cristof and Sam returning to the Plaza. Sam had drank a lot of wine with dinner and poured a large drink the moment he got back to the room. He was quite buzzed and was frustrated with Ethan. "Are you OK, Sam?" asked Cristof. "Yeah, Cris, I'm fine," replied Sam. "It's hot in here." Sam went to the thermostat and adjusted the temp. Then he peeled off his shirt and tossed it on a chair, walking over to look out of the balcony French doors across Central Park. Cristof walked up behind Sam and tentatively put his hand on Sam's bare shoulder. Sam felt warmth spread through him at the touch and felt a tear run down his cheek. "I understand," said Cristof, "I know you and Ethan were close." "I'm sorry," said Sam, wiping his eyes, as he tried to keep his emotions at bay. "That Devin is a player and Ethan's so...I don't know what my problem is. We certainly weren't in a relationship." "Come here," Cristof turned Sam and pulled him into a hug. Sam put his arms around Cristof and pulled him close. "It's perfectly normal for you to have these feelings." They broke the hug and Sam moved in to kiss Cristof, who hesitantly responded at first. As the kiss progressed, Cristof gave in and allowed himself to be enveloped in Sam. Sam unbuttoned Cristof's shirt and pushed it off over his shoulders. Cristof took Sam's hand and led him into the master bedroom. Both removed their pants and the rest of the their clothes and climbed under the blankets, embracing each other in their nudity and allowing their passion to take over. They made love that first night in New York and slept together in each other's arms. Sam felt safe and allowed himself to feel the range of emotions that had built up inside him. Sam woke in the night. He eased out of the bed, trying not to wake Cristof. Sam went out on the balcony, the crisp Spring night air felt soothing on his naked body. As he gazed at the stars over Central Park, he felt a weight lifted from him. He was independent. He was his own person. And he was making his way in the world on his own. Sam realized that his reliance on Luca had been bothering him. While he loved Luca and never wanted to be without him, at the same time he knew he had lost himself since he had left New York. And now, returning to the city where he had just started to find himself months earlier, he quickly came back. Seeing Ethan had liberated him. He had been hoping, more than he cared to admit, that Ethan was waiting for him and needed him. But Ethan had moved on and now Sam was ready to do the same. His own life had arrived and it was time to embrace it and become the man he always knew he was. Sam went inside to his room and retrieved his phone and, putting on a robe against the night air, walked back out to the balcony. He punched the speed dial on the phone and waited. "Hello, love," came the familiar, deep voice like music to his ears, "What has you up and about at this hour? Is something wrong?" "No," said Sam, smiling, "I just wanted to hear your voice, Luca. I miss you. I love you eternally." "I love you, eternally, Sam," replied Luca. "Are you sure everything is alright?" "Everything is wonderful." And in that moment, Sam had decided he wanted to be with Luca only from now on. Luca had been right. Sam needed to experience life for himself and come to a monogamous place on his own. "I love you. Everything is wonderful," repeated Sam. Sam and Luca said goodbye and Sam returned to his own room. He crawled into the clean, chilled sheets, and quickly fell fast asleep, dreaming of Luca's arms wrapped around him.
