Foreword: Not really inspired today for anything too bright to be placed in here. As usual, let me know what you think of my story, wich I write for you to enjoy ( and there is no way of knowing that unless you rite to me) Chapter 14: Trust. I woke up around ten. Andrew was having breakfast and watching TV. "What's up?" "Not much" I said yawning. "I think I'll take a shower" I yawned again. "OK, I'll teach you how to speak when you're done" "Funny, I think. But don't expect me to laugh at this time" I couldn't stop yawning. "Your mouth keeps moving but all I can hear is a bear. Are there bears around here?" "Ha. Is that enough for you?" "For now. Go on and shower" I looked at myself in the mirror. Still looking good. The stupid grin seemed to be back, too. I was glad to see it. I turned on the shower and had a long soothing bath. Time for breakfast, so I went right for the kitchen with a towel around my waist. "I'm glad to see the singing's back." Andrew called. "What?" I said poking my head into the living. "The singing and humming? Just now in the shower?" "Oh, that. Yeah, I guess it is!" "Great. Let's go out to lunch. How about some pizza?" "Sounds great! But I have to be at the Turner's house by two. Their mother wants to talk to me." "About what?" "I haven't got a clue! Let me get dressed and I'll join you for breakfast." "Ok" I put on a polo shirt and a swimsuit. Standard clothing around there. I went back to the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea. I've never been a big fan of coffee, but I sometimes drink it if the weather is really cold. I was about to make some toast, but since we were going out for lunch, I decided not to. "Do you have something planned for today?" Andrew asked me as I approached the table with my cup of tea. "I don't think so. Why? Any ideas?" "Well, since this is our last night here, I was thinking we might go dancing or maybe have a drink somewhere nice" "Our last day? Oh my God, you're right! I completely forgot!" "Well, you have been busy..." "Meaning what?" "That girl you've met, you are not exactly here on earth with the rest of us" My face went completely red. For a second I thought I heard something else in that remark, but he couldn't know. Breathe, Steven, breath. "Sorry about that" "Well, if you haven't got plans for the night, maybe we can have some fun" "Great, we'll talk about that during lunch. Right now, I'd like to kick your butt in the arcade. Are you up for some racing matches?" "We'll see who kicks whose butt!" "We spent the rest of the morning in the arcade, playing pool, shooting terrorists and racing. He won the races, of course; I suck when it comes to racing, I always come up last. But who cares, at least I'm a lot better at pool, my turn to kick his ass anytime. We had lunch at a nice pizza place, and we talked about our plans for the night. That ruined any plans I had with Sean, and since it was my last day there, I would have to come up with something if I wanted to properly say goodbye. After we finished our lunch, I left for the Turner's. I kept thinking about Sarah. What did she want to tell me? Was it about Mike and his test? I certainly couldn't think of anything else. What could be so important that she had to tell me on my vacations? Arriving at the door, I took a deep breath, and knocked on the door. "Who is it?" asked Martin. "It's me, Steven" He opened the door in a flash, and shook my hand. "Looking good!" he said almost too loudly, I could not help but blush a little. It also reminded me that I had some thinking to do about our situation. "Thanks, I guess. Can I come in?" "Hi, Steven! I'm glad you could come, come inside, please" said Sarah. "Hi, Stevie!" said Johnny, hugging me so tightly I couldn't walk. "Johnny, leave him alone! He can't even move!" The next one to show up was Sean, he had just come out of the shower, judging by his wet hair and the way he had put on his shirt. He looked great, but I had to stop staring. "Hi, Sean! Good to see you" "Hi!" he said, biting his lower lip, showing how much he wanted to touch me. "Hi, Stevie!" said Mike, obviously mocking little Johnny. "Children, please! I need to talk to Steven alone. Would you mind going somewhere else for a couple of minutes?" "But we haven't seen him in such a long time!" pleaded Johnny. "How about you go somewhere else, and then I'll take you to the arcades, that's if you are ok with it Sarah" I offered. "I bet they'd go even if I wasn't!" she laughed. The children seemed ecstatic with the offer. Especially Johnny and Martin. "Sean, why don't you make us some coffee?" asked Sarah. "Steven doesn't like coffee. Do you want a cup of tea?" he said. "It's ok, I've just eaten. A glass of water would be nice, though" "Coming right up!" "I'm glad you could come" she said as soon as we were alone. "I need to ask you a really big favor" "What is it?" classes with Mike, I thought. "Well, it's kind of a long story." "Go ahead, I don't mind" "Last year, my mother died..." "I'm very sorry" I added. What was this all about. What does it have to do with me? "Thanks, but it's alright. The thing is, she was the one who would stay at home whenever my husband and I went away. We never got the chance to go away this year, not even once. Although Mike is old enough, we can't leave him in charge of the house. Robert, my husband, couldn't even come with us this time, only on weekends. What I'm trying to say, and I hope that I'm not embarrassing you, is that we wanted to stay on our own for a week in February, but we don't have anyone to look after the boys. I would have asked my sister, but she is away for the summer." "You are asking me?" SHOCK. I had no words. "The reason I'm asking you, is because I know you are a very responsible man, and the children really like you. They look up to you. I could hire someone else, but the boys would surely drive him mad. You seem to have some control over them, and they pay attention to you. I don't want to pressure you, you don't have to say yes if you think it's too much responsibility." "I'm honored! I really am. Are you sure?" "Steven, I trust you. You have been great to me and my children. I know you are young, but you've shown me how responsible and trustworthy you are. I can't think of someone better for it. Of course, we are willing to pay you" "Pay me? Why? There's nothing I'd want more" I thought to myself. "No, you don't have to pay me!" "I insist" "I'll do it, but only because I want to. You don't have to pay me. You said this was a favor yourself. I'll do it as a favor to you." "I don't know, I don't want you to feel obligated." "Nonsense. It's my pleasure" and it really was. "Ok, I'll talk to my husband tonight as soon as he gets here. I'll give you the keys and some instructions and phone numbers as soon as I work out the details. When are you leaving?" "As a matter of fact, I'm leaving tomorrow." I heard a little gasp behind me. "Sean, quit looking at Steven like that and hand him the glass of water" "Sorry" he said, and left soon after. "I'm sorry for that. I don't know what he's thinking!" "But I do" I thought. "I'll talk to my husband as soon as I can. What time are you leaving?" "Around noon. But you can call home as soon as you have news. You have my number" "That would be great. You can't imagine how much I appreciate this. I've been needing some real vacations for a long time!" "I can imagine. Again, it's not only my pleasure, I'm honored." "Sean, call your brothers, please." "Are you going to tell them right now?" "No, I'll leave that to you. If I told them right now, they will not stop rambling about it for the rest of the month. I think I'll tell them before they leave." "Ok, no problem." "Martin, get my purse" she asked as soon as the boy came through the living- room's door. "Mike this is for you and your brothers. I don't want you to ask Steven for any more" she said as she handed him some money. "And, don't cause him any trouble. I want you to listen to him, ok?" "Yes, mom!" the boys said in unison. "And Steven, If any of them causes you any trouble at all, don't hesitate to bring him back. Understood boys?" The boys took that as the end of the speech and the chance to go, so they promptly run to the door and waited for me outside. "Again, I can't thank you enough for this. I greatly appreciate it" "Don't mention it." "Ok, I'll call you later" "Great. I'll bring the guys back in a couple of hours" What an interesting turn of events, I thought to myself. It was a great responsibility, but I was sure I could handle it. I was immediately interrupted by the cheering sound of the younger boys. "We are going to have a lot of fun!" said Johnny. "But only if you behave. I don't want you running around like crazy, ok?" "Yes, sir!" he said, saluting me. Sean came closer to me. "You are leaving tomorrow?" he said showing his disappointment. "I'm sorry, I completely forgot about it" "But we've only been together for a few days. That's not fair!" "I know, but we'll only have to wait for two weeks. Then we we'll be together as much as we want" "Yes, I know, but I wish you could stay for my birthday. It's the day after tomorrow." "I know, I'll make it up to you. I promise" We arrived at the arcade in a matter of minutes, and Mike proceeded to get coins for everybody. The boys wanted to challenge me to a race, but I refused. How would I look if I lost to an eleven year old? That's how bad I am. We played for a long time, to a lot of different things. Martin and Johnny followed me everywhere I went. They were having a lot of fun. "Can I talk to you for a second?" Mike asked. "Of course, about what?" "In private" We moved to one side and we sat on a bench. I could see that Sean was looking at us, and he soon came over. "Would you mind?" Mike told him. "What are you two talking about?" said Sean. "I need to ask him something" Mike replied. "I'll leave you alone then. Have fun!" the jealousy part again. "Wait a second" I told Mike. "Sean, he needs to tell me something. You can't make a scene whenever we get together." "I don't mind. Honestly" "Yeah, right! Look, don't you trust me? If I'm telling you that it's nothing important, you've got to trust me" "I trust you. I just don't trust HIM" "Ok, fair enough. But if you trust me, you shouldn't get upset. Ok?" "Ok, you go talk to him, but you are mine the rest of the day" "Great" I said and I went back to Mike. "What do you want to talk about?" "Well, remember what you asked me yesterday?" "Oh, right, what did you find out?" "Not much, I'm afraid. I think I know what he secretly wants, but it's way out of your league." "You tell me what it is and I'll tell you if it's out of my league" "Ok. I've seen him looking at some really cool watches. He asked my mom for it, but she said it was too much. It's almost $110!" "Certainly not cheap, but I can afford it" "You are willing to spend that much on a birthday present?" "It's not any present, it's my boyfriend's birthday" "Don't you think it's too much?" "What do you mean?" "It's a very expensive watch for a fifteen year old. And what would my mother think when she sees it?" "Maybe you've got a point, but I still want to do it." "I think you are making a big mistake. Buy him a watch if you want, but don't overdo it. Don't you think my mom will get suspicious when she sees it?" "But I want it to be special!" "Anything you give him will be special. Get him a nice watch, there are a lot of nice watches that won't be so suspicious." "I don't know. I really wanted to give him something big" "Why don't you get him a nice watch and then you get it engraved?" "You think he'd like that?" "I told you before, he will treasure anything you give him, even if it was a card." "Yeah, I guess he would." "I'll show you the watches he was looking at after we get them home" he said pointing at his brothers. "If we do that, I won't be able to give it to him. I want to give it to him today. I still have to pack my bag, clean the house, close everything down and that's a lot to do in such a short time." "I've got an idea!" "What is it?" "Do you trust me?" "Good question, do I really trust him?" I thought. "Yes, I guess I do" "Martin! Come here! Would you like to have tea at Steven's house?" "YEAH!" "Ok, tell Johnny and Sean, we are leaving now" We walked back to my house, but not through the forest, I wanted them to know how to get there. Sean kept walking beside me, but he wasn't talking. "Are you still mad at me?" "No, I'm not mad" he said indifferently. "I can't believe you are going to do this every time I talk to him" "Then don't talk to him!" "You know my answer to that. Sean, I know you don't get along, but he wants to change, why don't you give him a chance" "You know my answer to that" "Are we going to keep this up for the rest of the day? My last day here?" "I'll talk to you if we get the chance to be alone, but not right now." When we arrived at my place, Andrew was surprised to see me with the whole Turner gang behind me. Johnny kept asking him questions and trying to make him flex his biceps. To his disappointment, Andrew asked him "what biceps?" since he was skinny and showed no muscles. "Why don't we go and get something nice to eat? Like some muffins?" "You want to go and get some now? Why didn't you think about it before we got here?" Sean asked. "We'll be back in a flash. Right Steven?" "I don't know." "Come on, let's hurry up" I looked at Sean's face before I left. He was more than hurt. He was angry. But I was worth it, wasn't it? I was going to get his present. He would most certainly be surprised. We run all the way back to the main street, and Mike led me to the place where Sean had seen the watches. "What do you think about that one?" I asked. "It's $50!" "But it's not as big and flashy as the other one." "Ok, it's your call!" "I'm worried about a little detail" "What?" "It's obviously a masculine watch. How will I look when I ask him to engrave it?" "Depends on what you want to engrave on it." "Right. Let's go inside" "Good afternoon, gentlemen. Can I help you? "I'd like to see that watch you've got over there." "Will you show me which one?" "Yes, of course." I suddenly felt very nervous. "That one" "That's a very nice choice" "Is it possible to have it engraved? It's a present" "No problem! What do you want to engrave on it?" "Well, er..." "Here, write it down" "Ok, here you go" "So, let me get it straight. It's "S&S for ever." Right?" "Yes" I barely said, my face obviously red. "Do you think that's ok?" I asked Mike. "That's great. She will love that" "Yeah, I guess she will. When can I come for it?" "If you give me a half hour, I'll have it ready for you. It's not like I have a lot of work to do!" "Great. I'll be back in half an hour!" We left the store and headed for a bakery to get some muffins. "That was a nice save. Thanks" "Don't mention it. I thought you were going to pass out. You are aware that it's still a man's watch, right?" "Yes, but it made me feel a little better" We made it back to the shop, picked up the nicely packed watch and ran all the way back to the house. I wasn't ready for what I saw when we arrived. But I guess Sean wasn't ready to see us panting and sweating as we came through the door. Before I could even think what happened, he ran away. I wasn't sure what had happened and I kept looking at the others. "Go after him!" "Yes, right." I looked at Mike and went right after Sean. "What did just happen here?" I was really confused. "Sean! SEAN! Wait for me!" "WHAT FOR?!" he said as he stopped right in front of me. The look on his face told me he wanted to hurt me badly. He seemed to hate me. "Why did you run off like that?" "You know perfectly well why!" "No, I don't. Why don't you tell me?" "What did you do with Mike?" "We ran to the bakery to get some muffins, what did you think we did?" "You just run to the bakery? What took you so long?" "There were a lot of people waiting in line. I can't believe you are asking me this questions! Did you really think that we went into the forest to have sex?" "I don't know, I saw you two like that and I just couldn't think!" "You said you trusted me. I don't care if you don't trust your own brother, but you should trust me. Even if Mike was up to something, you have to understand that I would never do anything with him or anybody else!" "What do you think about Mike?" he asked. "What do you mean?" "Do you think he's good looking?" "Why?" "I'm just curious. Do you like him?" "Yes, I think he's hot, is that what you want to hear?" He looked at me, obviously hurt. "Sean, it's not what you think. I think he's good looking, but he means nothing to me." "But you still like him!" "Yes, I like him the same way I like other good looking men. But I feel nothing for him!" "So?" "You don't have to be jealous of your brother, or any other man for that matter. I'm a guy, I still find other men attractive, but I only care about you. Don't you look at other men?" "..." "You don't have to feel guilty about it. It's only natural. I like to think that we have something special, I don't care about anyone else. Sean, there must be a million men out there who look better than me, why are you still with me?" "Because I love you" he whispered. "Sean, that's all I care about. Your brother is good looking, period. I like him as friend, nothing more." "I don't want you to hang out with him" "Sean, look at me. Nothing will ever happen between us. Don't you trust me?" "I don't trust HIM" "I know you've had problems with him, but he's your brother. He doesn't want to hurt you" "I still don't trust him. He always gets everything. He's always so perfect!" "But you trust me, don't you? I know I should have kept my mouth shut, but I don't want to lie to you. I will always be honest with you. I know how you feel, but there's nothing to worry about. The best looking movie star could come by right now and ask me to go with him and I wouldn't care. I only care about you." "Really?" "Sean, I'm not perfect, and you are still with me. I'm the luckiest guy on earth for that. You have to know that there's no reason to be jealous, because I'll always be there. I'm yours. And you have to stop thinking about your brother like that. I know for a fact that he's sorry about the way he's been to you. And, if it's of any help, he has someone else already" "He has? Who?" "I don't know, he didn't tell me. Are you feeling a little better?" "A little." "Come here" I said as I hugged him again. "I don't need or want anybody else. You are all I've ever wanted, and there's no one who can take me away from you" "I'm sorry. I don't know where that came from" he said. I knew exactly where that came from. I guess that there's a lot more about these brothers than I thought. How could I tell him about Mike and Jay after that? "You don't have to be sorry. Sean, you have to understand something. You don't have to be perfect and I certainly don't love you because you are perfect, but because you are perfect for me. You are the only one I care about, I know there are other people in the world who are extremely beautiful, but in my eyes, you are perfect. You are the only one I love, and that's all that matters to me. I will always love you." "So you think I'm beautiful?" and he kissed me. I knew we weren't over the subject and that the only way to get it over with was if I could make them talk about it among themselves. But how? "Sean, I wanted to wait to give you this, but I guess there's no better moment than the present. Happy birthday, Sean!" He looked at his present in my hand and then he looked at me right in the eyes. "Mike helped me choose it for you, that's why we took so long" "He did?" a tear beginning to form in his right eye. "I feel so guilty" "You had all the right in the world to feel the way you did. But you should know better. You should trust me, and you should trust Mike. He really wants to make it up to you." "I'm so sorry. Can I open it?" "Go ahead, I hope you like it" I said with a smile, trying to make him smile. "Wow" he said as soon as he opened it. "This is so great. You shouldn't have. It's too much!" "No, it's not. Read the inscription in the back" He read the inscription as I told him, and the tear that was trying to come out, run down his face. "We will be together for ever, right?" "It's my only wish in the world" I said as I kissed his tear away, and then I kissed him, right there, in the middle of the street. Thank God everyone seemed to be at the beach at that time, although I wouldn't have cared. "I'm so sorry. I don't know what to say. I love you Steven Baker. I love you so much!" "I love you more!" and he just kissed me on the lips. "You should apologize to your brother" "How did you get this with him? Did you tell him?" "No, he waited outside. He is a good friend." "I guess I owe him an apology, but I wouldn't know where to start" "I bet a hug will be enough. You don't have to say anything else" "Will you do the honors?" he said, holding his hand in front of me. "I want you to put it on my right wrist, just like yours" "Do you even know why I use it there?" "Not really. Why?" "It might sound silly, but I changed it one day after staying too long in the sun, just to get rid of the tan line, and then I got used to it in my right wrist." "Well, I'll use mine on the right too." "Let's go back, I don't even know what I'm going to tell your brothers or Andrew" "You'll come up with something. You always do!" "Right. I'm always in charge of damage control. That sucks!" "Yeah, but you're good at it." "Just because I'm good it doesn't mean I like it." "You wait outside and I'll call Mike" "OK" He waited on the street while I went inside looking for Mike. I found everybody sitting at the table playing cards. It seemed no one cared about the recent event. "Mike, can I see you outside?" "I'll be right there!" "Did you tell them anything?" "I told them that I had a fight with Sean and that's why he left. After all I've done, nobody seemed to have a problem buying it." "Sean asked me how I bought the watch with you, I don't want to tell him yet, so I told him you waited outside. I don't think I can keep up with all the lies I'm telling. We'll have to talk about it when you get back." "How's Sean? Is he alright?" "Better, but I think he wants to tell you something. Go on, talk to him" and he walked towards his younger brother who was standing on the street. "Is everything ok?" Mike asked. Sean just hugged his brother. It was the first time that they actually made contact for any other thing than fighting. "What's this for?" Mike asked. "Just because. Thanks for everything." "You are welcome. Now be careful with it. The guys will want to know how you got it." "I know, I'll tell them that it was a present from Steven and my older brother" "It looks good on you, squirt." "I know, pig face" Although it seemed like they were about to fight, it was truly a cease fire. They weren't looking to hurt each other. Maybe I could make it work. Maybe I could tell Sean about Jay and Mike. Maybe everything was going to be ok. The last night at St Clem's was a lot of fun. We danced, we might have had a little too much to drink. I didn't sleep that night. I decided to stay up, and so did Andrew. We were afraid of loosing the bus if we both overslept. The turners drove us to the bus station. Sarah gave me the keys to their house and some money for groceries and stuff like that. She also reminded me of Martin's birthday. It was February 6th, and she asked me to take care of it. She wanted to come back for Martin's birthday but I assured her that I could take care of it. In the end, I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to Sean. At least not in the way I wanted. He waved his hand, displaying the new watch as the bus drove away. But I was going to see him soon enough. I had a lot of things to think about in the meantime. ___________________ No cliffhanger this time. What do you think about this chapter? Please, let me know!
