Chapter 28: Friends. "What are you talking about?" I asked my apparently over excited boyfriend, Sean. "Why don't you ask Mike?" "What's going on?" Jay asked as he sat on the couch with a can of beer in his hand. "Shut up and listen!" Sean told him. "Well?" I asked Mike. "Let's all sit down so we can talk" Mike offered. "Talk about what?!" "Just shut up Jay, and let him talk!" "Ok, ok, I'll keep my ever-annoying mouth shut!" "If you’re expecting me to feel sorry, you better stay seated. Nobody's buying your victim act." "Could you two please keep it quiet? This is serious!" Mike snapped at his brother and boyfriend. "Serious? What happened?" I asked a little startled. "Nothing you have to worry about, but I think I have some good news for you." "Like what?" "Well, I think I can get you an apartment pretty cheap." "You're kidding me, right?" "Far from it, the only thing is your roommate." "Roommate? What about him? Friend of yours?" "No, not a friend. Just me." "What do you mean,‘ you?’ Like in YOU being my roommate?" "Remember my grandma's flat? We had a couple of classes at her place before she died." "Yeah, I remember, close to your house." "That's it," Mike nodded, "I know you've been looking for a nice place in the area and the flat has been empty all this time. Mom got the apartment and we could move in, if you like the idea of sharing the place with me, that is." "That would be so awesome! Of course I'd like to! I mean, it's so much better this way!" "You mean it? I don't want you to feel pressured or anything like that." "Mike, I can't think of anything better than sharing a flat with you." "Tell him about your job!" Sean cut me off. "You got a job? Since when?" I asked. "You got a job and didn't tell me?" Jay asked at the same time. "I wanted to work out all the details before telling you, I thought it would be wiser if it didn't go through." "You could have told me anyway!" Jay said. "And how long would it have taken for you to tell Steven?" "I wouldn't have!" "You would SO tell him! You tell him everything!" "I do not!" "You do." Sean told him cracking up a little. "Ok, so sue me!" "So you got a job, where at?" "MusicWorld, the new store by Blockbuster. I start tomorrow." "Your mother will totally flip!" "I told her today and about the flat." "You told her you wanted me as your roommate? What did she say?" This could get so wrong, I thought. "Nothing, she said she wanted to talk to both of us and to invite you over for dinner tomorrow night. They both want to talk to us." "To both your parents?! They're ok with me living with you?" "Yeah, they only told me to ask you first, and if you agree, they'd like to talk to both of us." "Well, yeah, of course, but you sure she's ok with it?" "Yeah, why wouldn't she? She was only worried about my new job and school, but I told her I could manage. Dad was pretty ok with it, too. I'm not sure what they'll ask for, but we can work all the details with them tomorrow." "I suppose so…" The possibilities of sharing a place with Mike, only a few blocks away from Sean, in a great flat, were endless. I mean, I couldn't have asked for a better deal. The idea of sharing a place with someone else had made me let down a few offers. I couldn't afford a place all on my own, and sharing it with someone else would severely hinder my chances of being with Sean openly. Sharing a place with Mike would allow us to continue as we were, not having to hide anything, and Sean being my roommate's brother, it would be a lot less suspicious to any curious neighbors. It sounded really great, I couldn't have asked for a better deal, but was Sarah really ok with it? She didn't know about Mike, was she ok with letting her son live with a gay guy? Even if it was her second son's boyfriend? (or whatever she thought we were). Could it be that easy? The distance between the flat and their house meant that Sean and I could spend a lot of time together, I was sure she realized that. As much as she had kept her promise about forgetting the whole thing, I knew that it wasn't actually true. She had to have been dealing with it every time I went to her house, every time Sean came over, and every time he talked about me, even in the most innocent way. How could she not hate me? How could she let us get away with it? And now, it was like openly saying that we were going to be together all the time. Well, not that, but I guess she can picture a lot more awful things than I can. Could she really be ok with it? What was she thinking about? Why would she let this happen? What if she told her husband about the pervert that was having sex with their son? "Are you still with us?" Mike asked me. "Sorry, zoned out a little." "So, what do you think? Roomies?" "Yeah, roomies, I guess." "Wow, don't be so happy!" Sean punched me in the shoulder as he got closer. "Sorry, I must be a little shocked. I think this deserves a toast, don't you?" I asked Mike. "Well, yes, I think it does," he answered with a smile. "Way ahead of you," Jay blurted as he gulped down the last of his beer. "Come on, be serious for a second." Mike told him. "Do you realize what you're asking from him? He could very well die trying." I said with a very straight face. "Very funny! HA HA!" Jay said sarcastically. "Oh, now I've hurt him. Poor little guy" I said as I patted his head. "Someone oughta give him a kiss." "Go ahead!" He dared me. "I'm sure you'd like that, but not in front of them. Wouldn't want them to find out." "Cock tease" He cracked up, as well as the other two, and for the first time, I was left with my mouth open not knowing what to say. "Hehhh Hehhh he got you." My boyfriend said in a taunting voice as he kissed me on the cheek. "Yeah, wasn't expecting that at all. But enough of this, let's make a toast." They all grabbed a can of beer, I opted for a coke. "To good friends" I said. "Too good friends" They said in unison. We ended up ordering pizza and talking about the apartment. The flat was on the sixth floor. It had two big rooms and a smaller one that no one ever used. When you open the door, there’s a small hall that leads into the dinning room. Beyond the dinning room, there’s the living room, and almost at the end of the hall there is a door that leads to the kitchen and another one in the corner between the smaller room and the dinning room. Opposite that door, there was another small hall. On each end, there was a room and a nice bathroom in the middle. The place was fully equipped. We didn't know if we would get all the furniture, but from what I remembered and what Mike said, a few things were of no interest to us. As much as we wanted to discuss everything we'd do and what things would go there, I only remembered the dinning room and kitchen. "Why don't we go there tomorrow, before you talk to Dad?" Sean came up with the solution. "I could go home with Jay and get the keys without anyone knowing." "Sounds great to me, what do you think Steven?" "If you're ok with it, I'm all for it." "Great, this is going to be so cool!" It was obvious that Mike was pretty psyched about the whole thing, and I was too, only something was bothering me. Not living with Mike, even if we didn't get along I would still accept. It was a great chance for Sean and I. Dinner with Sarah was another thing altogether. I wasn't sure what would happen. I guess I was just being cautious. Too many things could go wrong. I didn't want to let them know what I was thinking, so I let it drop. There was nothing I could do about it, and in the end, it could just be me. "Let me help you with the dishes," Jay offered. "Ok, thanks." I said. "Are you sure you want to do this?" "Yeah, no big deal, but I must insist on two conditions…" I said, keeping my voice as low as possible. "One, you don't use my bed. Two, I don't want to find you naked or half naked when we come back, so wear something to bed." "You sure it doesn't bother you? I mean, I can understand if you don't want to. I can see how it could be weird." "Don't make me think about it any more than I already have. We'll be back around one, and I better don't find any clues." "You're the greatest! I owe you one." "A big one." "A big what?" Sean asked as he hugged me from behind. "Nothing." Jay said. "Come on, what is it?" "I'll tell you later. Why don't you get a couple of covers from my closet." "What for?" "You'll see. Mike?" "Yeah?" "Would you like to stay over tonight?" "I'm not sure." "Jay is staying too." "Well, I guess so." "Why don't you tell your parents you and Sean are staying over?" "Sure. Thanks." "I thought we could have some fun!" Sean told me in my ear. "Horny?" I whispered back. "As much as you." "We'll have to live with that. Got the covers?" "Yeah." "Leave them on the couch for Jay and Mike and get the comforter from my bed. I'll get another one from the closet." "What's the deal with all the covers?" "Wait and see." "What is it with you people today?" "Huh?" "Nothing. Just one "wait-and-see" after another today!" I folded the comforters and gave one to Sean. I motioned for him to follow me. "Where are you going?" Mike asked as I opened the door. "Out. We'll be back after midnight. See you!" I closed the door behind us and opened the one on the side of the hall, the one that opened into the garden and the back of the house. "Where are we going?" "Up." "Up where?" "Up yours!" I cracked up, but he just pinched me in the arm. "Sorry, couldn't help it!" I said between laughs. It's really amusing watching Sean trying not to laugh, because you can tell how hard he is trying and not managing at the same time. "Up to the roof." "What for? And don't tell me you'll see!" "Ok. You'll learn soon enough," I said with an evil little grin. "Screw you!" "Maybe later!" "How do you plan to get up there?" "By climbing on the fence over there." "You sure you can do that?" "Of course I can. I've been climbing since I was eight or so. Playing Batman with my brother and some neighbors or something like that." "You were Batman?" He said somewhat amused. "No, I would always be the bad guy." "I can't imagine why!" I climbed the fence easily, and Sean threw me the covers as soon as I was there and then I helped him up. I laid down one blanket on the roof. It’s a flat roof, and not to mention somewhat dirty. "Take off your shoes and get in here with me," I told him. "Can anyone see us up here?" "Sadly, yes. The house just across the street, and not to mention all the apartments from the building around the square." "So no sex" He said as he cuddled close to me. "I'd think not. Remember that night at St. Clem's, walking down the beach?" "Yeah, that was great." "I know. Walking hand in hand, nobody cared. Not that many people saw us, but the few that spotted us had no problem with it." "Yeah, maybe we can do that again this year." "I hope so." "Remember the first time I stayed over?" "Yeah, the first time we actually slept together. I really liked that, couldn't wait to do it again. Waking next to you is still one of my favorite things." I kissed him slow and tenderly, and he responded in kind. Holding each other and kissing without a care in the world. I was sure that no one would notice that kind of action, so I let go of all my worries and enjoyed the wonderful touch of his lips against mine. The sexy heat of his breath on my upper lip. The silkiness of his hair against my fingers, and the soft heat of his ear against my palm. I could never get enough of that. Of kissing the boy I loved, the reason for my happiness. The feel and taste of his tongue in my mouth against my own. It was so fulfilling. Just kissing him. Just connecting with him in that special way. Feeling us become one, or the closest thing to one any two people can get. "What were you and Jay talking about just now?" "Your brother and Jay haven't been together "together" for over two weeks." "So?" "So they are getting together right now." "In your room?" "Well, yeah. I mean, what else can they do. I couldn't tell him No, as much as it freaks me out." "You are a great friend." "And you're a great boyfriend. I love you." "Love you, too." We resumed our kissing under the stars and as much as we both wanted to do something else, there was nowhere to do it. I wouldn't go inside the house. My brother could show up at any time and where would I hide Sean? Even then, I was completely happy just kissing my boyfriend. We stayed until well after midnight, and when we came into my place, Mike and Jay were already asleep on the couch. Jay was sleeping on his stomach, and Mike was sleeping on his side, with one hand over Jay's head and the other on his back. Without turning on the lights, we got undressed to our boxers, but finally decided to wear a T-shirt to bed. The last thing I thought about before I fell asleep was about all the guys in my room and how important they were in my life. And whatever happened the following day, I wouldn't let anything come between us.
