This awakens some unfamiliar yet pleasurable feelings for both of them. This story is not just a 'we suck, we fuck, we do it again' story, although the sexual activity does increase as the story continues, but it also explores the developing relationship between the two of them and their feeling towards one another. This chapter culminates in the opening of the skateboard park and some unexpected happenings for one of Lance's friends. A Visit to the Hospital Chapter Seven "The Big Day" Work had been progressing smoothly, but exhausting, on the skate board project, thanks in part to the maximum effort Lance and his team have been putting into it. Brad had really stepped up beyond all expectations with his attention to details. He had come up with what he called his punch list of things that had to be done and when they needed to be completed by. When I asked him how he came up with this idea, he told me he got it from his father. "My dad, my real dad, was a top notch engineer. Whenever he had a project he was working on he would sit in his office at home all by himself and visualize the project, from the original idea through to implementation. When I first heard him in his office talking to himself, I wasn't sure what was happening. I peeked in his office and he told me to come in. He told me that by visualizing the project and thinking it through as if he was actually doing it for real, he could foresee anything he missed in his planning." "You seem to have his attention to detail. You're using his visualizing technique successfully I see. No wonder your father was such a good engineer." We had been so busy there was barely any personal time for Lance and I. As busy as we were, I was getting super horny. For some reason Lance didn't seem to be as anxious to have sex. I knew he would more than make up for this dry spell once the project was completed. I jokingly mentioned to Lance that he was getting through this dry spell better than I was. "About that, I hope you don't get mad at me but my spell hasn't been as dry as yours has." "Oh, and what do you mean by that? Have you and Brad been getting together for more than work sessions?" "No, Brad and I haven't even talked about anything sexual lately. He has been all business. Remember I told you Preston wanted to practice giving a blowjob on me so he could do Brad?" "Yes, but that was a couple of months ago." "The first time it was." "The first time? There had been more?" "Sorry, I should have told you but he has felt it was so long since I coached him that he may have forgotten some of the important details. So I let him suck me again. He was much better the second time. Then he asked a third time so he could prefect his technique." "So are you and Preston headed for boyfriend status soon?" I nervously inquired. "Oh no, nothing like that. We're really good friends but not romantically at all. It's just sex. Or at least it is for me. I hope it's the same with Preston." "Have you notice his attitude towards you has changed at all, any little things that would suggest he might look at you as more than just a practice dummy?" "A practice dummy? That's kind of cold, isn't it?" "Sorry, Lance, I just want to make sure you know what you're doing so no one gets hurt." "He did avoid me the next day at school after the first time. But I cornered him after lunch and we talked. He just felt weird about what happened and thought he might have messed up our friendship. I assured him we were good and all was back to normal. I hope I haven't messed up with you. I should have told you after the next few times." "Yes, you should have. Not because I needed to know but because you were feeling guilty about not telling me. We're honest with each other, remember? If I hooked up with another hot fifteen year old heir to a multimillion dollar charitable foundation, I'd be sure and let you know." I told him straight faced. "That's right, there are dozens of those guys floating around this city just waiting to get picked up by a grumpy old curmudgeon." Lance shot back in jest. "I'm not old but I am getting grumpy from lack of sex," I countered. Turning serious, Lance hung his head and came back to me, "I know, Chris, and I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you as soon as this park is finished and open." I leaned in and hugged him then gave him a deep kiss. "I know you will and it will be worth the wait. If there is nothing else I can contribute to your project, I'll patiently wait for you. And if Preston needs more practice, more power to the both of you." "I think Preston has had enough practice, for now anyway," he smirked at me. I couldn't let Lance know but I was jealous of Preston. He was tall and good-looking with a smile that would melt snowballs. Although I had never seen him naked or even close to it, he did fill out his clothes with a well-built body and a nice bulge in his pants. I suppose I couldn't blame Lance, even if Preston had an ulterior motive. From Lance's point of view, 'it was just sex'. Not that I would want to get together with him. Well, I guess I would if Lance and I didn't have something special. My attitude towards sex with guys has certainly changed since Lance and I have been together, something I never thought would happen. And as Lance so succinctly pointed out, what hot guy would want to hook up with an old guy like me. The big day was approaching and Brad had all but moved in with us spending so much time with Lance and I, often staying until after midnight. He and Lance had become tight friends through all of this and I was happy for both of them. The day before the dedication, Lance, Brad, Preston and myself all went down to check on all the last minutes details. As I expected, all was in order and ready. We went to eat on the way home and then home for an early night. Lance was wound so tight I wasn't sure he would ever get to sleep. We cuddled and he held me tight. "Chris, what if this doesn't go right tomorrow?" "It certainly won't be your fault or Brad's, that's for sure. But if you want to worry about something, worry about the nuclear plant the next state melting down tonight and exploding." "What? Is that something that might happen? Do you know something?" "What I know is that there is as much chance of that plant melting down as there is your dedication not going off without a hitch tomorrow," as I hugged him tighter. "Thanks . . . I think." Lance held me and fell asleep more from exhaustion than from not worrying. I awoke at first light, alone in bed. Normally I would have thought Lance had gone to piss but I knew him better than that. Sure enough, he was down in the office going over the schedule for the day. He was the master of ceremonies for the dedication. He would introduce the dignitaries on the stage, say a few words then bring Tony Hawk to the microphone to officially dedicate the park. Lance was reading and rereading his remarks. I snatched his speech away from him. "What the hell, I need to memorize that!" Lance shouted out as he tried to grab the papers back from me. "Bullshit! Instead of getting up there and sounding like a parrot repeating something from memory, just look at the crowd and speak from the heart. You didn't need a written speech when you took down the old board chairman did you?" "Well no, but that was different." "And you didn't need a prepared statement to put the priest in his place?" "No, but that was just a spur of the moment thing. This is important." "Lance, I watched you at the city council meeting for the approval of the park. You had written out what you wanted to say but then you never once looked down at your notes. You just spoke from the heart because it was something you believed in. Just do the same today and you'll be fine. Trust me." "On one condition. I know you didn't want to be on the stage with the dignitaries but I will do what you ask if you are sitting on the stage directly behind me. You were right with me in all those other times. Knowing you are there with me gives me confidence." "Yes, Lance, I've always told you I'll be there for you. If you want me on the stage, I'll be there." "Sitting right behind me, right. That way you can catch me if I faint from making a fool of myself." "A little laughter always relieves the tension of a situation. So if you faint and fall back towards me, I'll move my chair quickly and let you fall flat on your back. That will get a laugh." "Fuck you, asshole!" Lance snarled. "Certainly, that will happen later tonight." Lance laughed and made a face at me. "See, a little laughter helps." I reminded him Lance called Brad to tell him we'd pick him up on the way to the park. He knew it was early but he called Brad anyway. Mr. Phillips, Brad and Preston's father answered the phone. Lance apologized for calling so early but Mr. Phillips told him Brad and Preston had left thirty minutes ago. "Damn, Brad and Preston are already on their way. We better hurry." Lance yelled at me. When we got to the park, Brad was continuing with his punch list, checking to make sure everything was in place and ready, even down to where the police details were stationed. Tony Hawk's people arrived to set up their promotional material and unload the new skateboards that Tony was to give away. All was in order. I took my seat on the stage and watched in amazement at what could have been mass confusion but instead was a finely choreographed symphony of movements by a whole lot of people. Brad had arranged for ushers to seat the dignitaries as they arrived. The crowd started to gather. A cheer broke out across the crowd as Tony Hawk showed up. He got out of a limo and waved to everyone as he headed for the stage. An usher went to meet him but Brad intercepted him. "Thank but I'll show Mr. Hawk to his seat." Brad told the usher. "Good morning Brad. Everything looks just splendid. You have all done a fantastic job. And it's 'Tony', remember?" "Of course, Tony. We'll be starting the ceremony shortly. Here comes Lance and Chris." Lance walked up on the stage and shook hands with the dignitaries as we worked his way across to Tony. "It's almost showtime, Tony," Lance then went over the program again with him. "I'll open the program, welcome our guests, give the background of the park and then turn it over to you to speak." "Aren't you going to let some of the dignitaries speak as well?" Tony inquired. "No. They'll be recognized for the part in the progress but I don't want a lot of boring political speeches. Look at the audience. Maybe twenty percent are adults. The rest are kids here to see you and your new board and the new park, not politicians." "Hell, Lance, you're good at this, you know your shit!" Tony laughed and slapped Lance on the back. Lance took his place at the podium and looked back at me. I gave him two thumbs up. He smiled and turned back to the crowd. "Welcome everyone to the dedication ceremony for the new Skateboard Park. On stage behind me are some of the people who made this all possible in one way or another, the Mayor and the city council who made the land available, the architects who designed the park, the contractors who worked feverishly to keep the construction on schedule, members of the Winthrop Foundation who, along with the Tony Hawk organization provided funding, and the members of my team who sacrificed their free time over the past four months to put this all together. Most important of all is Brad MacKenzie whose meticulous record keeping and attention to detail brought it all together in one package. Stand up Brad." I was blown away that Lance called out Brad with special attention. Brad looked around, turned red in the face and slowly stood up. The crowd clapped and cheered loudly. "Thank you Brad, well done," as Brad sat down and he and Lance exchanged warm smiles. "This park came about because of a request for funds from the Winthrop Foundation by Tony Hawk. After some serious thought and brainstorming by all involved we came up with this final plan. Some were skeptical that it could be done, but with the right team of people, anything is possible. When you kids come out here and enjoy this park remember that good things can happen with a group of people work together. No single person could have done all this. It took all the people behind me as well as countless others who joined forces and worked side by side. So you too can accomplish anything you set your mind to with the right people working with you. Your family, your friends and your community. Without further ado, I want to introduce a person some of you might know, Mr. Tony Hawk!" as Lance stepped to the side of the podium and motioned Tony forward. The crowd went crazy with applause, cheers, yelling and shout 'Tony, Tony'. "Thank you, Lance. And thank you everyone who came out today. The reason I chose your city for the introduction of our latest skateboard design is because the lead engineer on the project was born and raised right here in your neighborhood. Would Mr. William Sawyer come forward please?" More applause and clapping as a tall, well-dressed bespectacled man made his way to the podium. "Bill has been with us since he graduated college. His ideas and innovations have made our boards the industry leaders for years, from small improvements on the trucks, to stability and handling tweaks, to changes that made our boards more durable and safer to use and perform better. And this new board will surpass all previous models." Tony opened the curtain on the back of the podium and pointed down there. "Bill, show the crowd your latest baby." Bill Sawyer reached down and brought out the new board, holding it high over his head, turning so everyone could see it. Again the enthusiastic crowd responded loudly. "Lance was so right when he told you anything can be accomplished with the right people behind you. My name may be on outside of the board but Bill and his team of engineers are what's inside this board. His team made it possible." Tony and Bill shook hands, then Tony place the board on the stage in front of the podium as Bill returned to his seat. "This all stated when my company sent a request to the Winthrop Foundation for some funding to hold a public event introducing the new board and honoring a home town success. Before I knew what hit me, I was flying out here to meet Lance and Brad and Preston and the rest of the team to discuss funding from me to help build this beautiful park. I first met Lance at the city council meeting where he convinced them to approve the park. The young fifteen-year-old teenage I was introduced too as Lance I assumed was Lance, Jr. I was here to meet his father; Lance Sr. Lance laughed and told me he was the person I had been dealing with. I was truly skeptical of the whole idea until I saw him in action. His presentation to the city council was more polished and to the point than most of my marketing department can do. And then it was revealed that Brad had taken it upon himself to circulate a petition in favor of the park and present it to the council without Lance knowing. That clinched it for me. This was a team I wanted to be part of. In our planning we had many discussions about naming the park. But in the end we decided there were so many people involved in making it happen, it would do a disservice to name it after any one person or entity. So we decided we would put the small monoliths around the park with a plague for each one of those who were instrumental in making it happen. The park itself will just be called 'The Skateboard Park'. The last person I would mention is someone who acted as a mentor and advisor to Lance and his team. He asked me not to mention his name, as he didn't want to take away from the hard work that everyone else had done. He felt they deserved the recognition today, not him. So to honor your request, Chris Gates, I won't mention your name." Tony turned and smirked at me. I just gave him a nod as the crowd erupted again. "Enough talking, let's get on with the show. I like to ask Bill to come back up here and cut the ribbon." Bill came forward and cut the ribbon adjacent to the stage at the main entrance. "Next I have a special request that 's not in the program. I found out that Brad is an avid and talented skate boarder. He is used to impromptu actions so I'm going to ask him to come up and take the first ride on the new board and christen the park the right way." Brad looked around and shook his head 'no' at Lance. Lance went over to where Brad was sitting and stood next to him clapping. Brad slowly stood up and came forward to take the board from Tony. "I'm not a scheduled speaker, and I should know. I prepared the schedule." Laughter broke out in the crowd. "But I want to say a few quick words. I lost my mother to cancer a few years ago and my father to a heart failure a year ago. I was adopted by Langdon Phillips and his wife and brought into their family. I was bitter and mad at the world. Despite the best efforts of his son Preston and the rest of his family, I remained angry with everyone and everything. Then Preston introduced me to Lance Winthrop. He had recently lost his last remaining parent, his mother. Lance understood my pain of loosing both parents and helped me accept what had happened. He got me involved in this project and it gave me purpose and the courage to face life on my terms. My world suddenly became brighter and fun again. Lance and I have become best friends and there is no way I can ever repay him for what he has done for me other than to remain his best friend for life." Brad took the skateboard and held it over his head. The crowd applauded loud and long. Brad waited until it had died down a little. "And I just want to add . . . I'M GAY AND PROUD OF IT!" Brad shouted to everyone's astonishment as he ran for the first set of challenges. He ran past Mr. and Mrs. Phillips on the path to the course. Mr. Phillips yelled out above the cheers and applause of the crowd, "That's my boy!" Lance looked at me with tears running down his face. My eyes were watering but I tried to maintain my composure. Preston came over and gave Lance a hug then ran off to be with Brad. Mr. Phillips came up on the stage as Lance and I hugged. "Lance, I don't know how I can thank you for giving me Brad back. I can honestly say I now have two sons. I was afraid Brad was going to be so damaged by his situation it would take years, if ever, for him to come to terms with his life. Chris, you have to be very proud of this young man. He is one in a million." "Thank you Langdon, but from what I've seen over the past few months, he is one of three in a million, Brad and Preston and Lance. What Brad did today took a lot of guts, coming out publicly to the whole crowd like that. And it must have shocked you and your wife." "We know our son and we had a pretty good idea already. But it didn't matter to us that he made it public. Hell, he could have proclaimed himself a Democrat and we'd love him just the same." Mrs. Phillips turned to her husband with an astonished look, "Really, dear?" "Well okay, maybe a Libertarian then." We all laughed. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips both hugged Lance and I as Brad and Preston came over to us. "Fuck, Brad, when you decide to come out, you really do it up big!" Lance congratulated him. "I owe so much to you. When I was up there with Tony on one side of me and you on the other, I felt invincible. I am who I am and whoever doesn't like it can go eat shit!" "Wow! And you were so uncertain and scared about it." "Yes, I was. But seeing you and what you were doing with your life I decided it was time I took control of my own destiny. I was reasonably sure Mom and Dad would be ok, maybe not at first but eventually. I talked about this with Preston and he was cool. Although he had no idea I was going to do what I did today. It was just a spur of the moment outburst." "You are just plain awesome, Brad. I'm honored and proud to call you my best friend." "I'd hug you right now, Lance Winthrop, but I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea about what kind of friends we are if they see us hugging." "What happened to Mr. Invincible? Come over here and hug me as tight and as long as you want." Lance said stepping closer to Brad. Brad met Lance and they wrapped they arms around each other and held the hug for what seemed like an eternity, although only a minute or so. Just before they broke, Lance turned his head and kissed Brad on the ear, then the cheek. "This time I kissed you. Now we're even, bestie." Lance snickered. Brad teared up again as he shook Lance's hand. Tony himself announced the raffle winners for the skateboards and the personal clinic he would hold. The barbecue buffet was about to open up so Brad gathered us up to head over to the tables. "You'll have to excuse us, Mom and Dad, his new titles for Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, but Lance, Preston, Chris and Tony all have to go get in the receiving line at the end of the serving line." "Don't you think that will create a bottleneck in the line doing it there?" Tony asked. "Planned it that way," Brad reasoned, "Everyone will be anxious to eat and won't want their food to get cold. They'll congratulate us, be quick with their comments and then move on. No long conversations." "Hot damn, son, you think of every little detail now, don't you." Tony exclaimed as he slapped Brad on the back. "If you and Lance are looking for a job after you graduate school, come see me. I can use talent like yours." "Thank you very much, Tony, but I'm going to follow in my father's footsteps and work for my Dad." Brad replied. "Mr. Phillips, you're a lucky man." As congratulations were winding down, a real estate agent approached Lance to ask him what his plans were for the rest of the area. "I've been overwhelmed by developers wanting to know what is coming next. They all want in on the ground floor," she told him "Now that this is completed I really can't divulge what my next plans are. Not at this time," Lance replied and then thanked her and walked back to me. "You have more plans in the works?" I asked him. He bent close to my ear and whispered, "I have plans. You want to know what is coming next? You, then me, then you again, then me again, and so on for the rest of tonight and all day tomorrow," giving me a sly grin. I was ready to take Lance home and put his plan into action. But it was not to be yet. "Come guys, we have to go check on the clean up crew and make sure this park is spotless. Then the stage crew dismantling the stage and the seating areas. Then get the work slips all sign for the detail cops." Brad announced. "Hey Brad, the dedication is over. You can relax a little." I told him. "Not yet Chris. The fun and games are over but know the rest of the work had to be done before we can leave." Brad responded. "Can't you delegate that to someone else so you boys can go bask in your glory?" I pleaded with him. "Nope, it's our responsibility to see this through to the end" "He right, Chris. Why don't the old folks go somewhere and get a drink while us younger guys finish our tasks." Lance snickered. "I'll help as long as I'm here. What can I do?" Brad picked up his clipboard with his checklists. "Hmmm, Let me see, I have Lance's name and Preston's name here. My name of course, but I'm sorry. I don't see any chores assigned to 'old dude'" The boys all broke out in laughter and were pointing at me. "Ya, the 'old dude', that's you." I took their good-natured hint and went to chat with Tony and Mr. and Mrs. Phillips. It took several hours but finally everything had been done on Brad's checklist. Us three old folks and Tony looked over at the cement bench near the entrance to the park. The three boys were all sitting there with their arms around each other's shoulder gazing at the skate board park they had been instrumental in creating. "There are three young men who will remain friends for life, each one of them going on to their own kind of greatness. This is just the beginning for them." I pronounced. Tony stood up to leave and turned us. "Have the boys get in touch later this summer so they can start planning the rededication ceremony for next year. I don't know when I have so much fun at a business event. If we give the three of them a year to plan something it will probably statewide, not just local," he laughed as he waved goodbye. We went over and put our hands on the boy's shoulders. "Time to go home. Job well done, all of you." Lance was asleep on my lap by the time we left the parking lot. He never really woke up that night and didn't get up until noon the next day. Ate some lunch and went back to bed. But by the second day, he was rested and, wahoo!, did he make up for the lost personal time we had missed. The following week was a laid back time of relaxation. Lance and I both did some work on foundation business but very limited. Letters and cards of congratulations were coming in every day. Brad and Preston had come to the house a few times and Lance had gone to their house to play some pool and video games. The friendship they had forged was strong and real. When Lance came back from the Phillips's home on Wednesday he told me Mr. Phillips wanted to talk to me. I called him to see what he wanted. "Hi Chris, glad you could call. I know its kind of short notice, but the family is going up to the mountains this weekend for a get away. We have a cabin on a lake and I thought it would do the boys some good to unwind. We would like to invite you and Lance to join us if you can get away. The boys can do some swimming, water skiing and jet skiing. Us 'old dudes' can just sit back and relax. Brad has invited a friend from school and I don't want Preston to feel like odd man out. Would you be interested?" "Is Lance on board with it?" "I haven't mentioned it to him yet in case you had other plans." "I can't go. I have a meeting with some donors on Saturday that I don't want to put off. But I'm sure Lance would be thrilled to go. I'll put him on the phone and you can ask him. Lance, pick up the phone," I hollered. Lance got on the phone and his face lit up when Mr. Phillips invited him for the weekend. He told Lance that I had already declined but the boys definitely wanted Lance to come along. "Let me get right back to you, Mr. Phillips. I want to talk to Chris." Lance hung up and tried to convince me to postpone my meeting and come along with them. "It will do you good to get away for a few days. I'll be fine here. If I didn't take care of business, I'd have a lousy time anyway." I countered to his reasons I should go. Lance called back and accepted the invite. They discussed details of what to pack and when they were leaving. Lance hung up the phone and turned to me. "Are you sure you can't go? If you stay home that will leave Preston and I together in the mountains all weekend. The rumor has it mountain air makes a person horny, if you get my drift?" "With you, I'm sure it will. As does city air, country air, ocean air and any other air that is humanly breathable." "What are you saying?" Lance asked with a strange look on his face. "This might be a good time for you and Preston to find out how you really feel about each other. Is it curiosity on Preston's part, is it just casual sex or is there more to it?" "Are you trying to palm me off on someone else?" Lance asked with a hurt look on his face. "Absolutely not. But I've explained to you that you need to explore other possibilities if the occasion arises, no pun intended. So go, have some fun after all your work on the Skateboard Park and let me know what happens when you get back. Deal?" "I'll go and I'll let you know what happens but I'm not so sure about having a good time." "Stop and think for a minute. If I went we couldn't have any alone time anyway. How would it look to the Phillips family for you and I to be alone in the house together fucking our brains out while everyone else was out swimming and boating and having a good time?" "If we were in the house, they wouldn't see us so who cares?" "You know what I mean, don't be a wise ass!" "I do, I know. I'll go and try to have a good time. But you have to promise me you and I will go away for a weekend later this summer, just the two of us." "It's a deal!" Lance went to pack and get his things ready. The next morning Mr. Phillips texted me to tell me he'd be at our house in fifteen minutes to pick up Lance. That gave Lance and I a few minutes to kiss and hug and say goodbye. Lance was still trying to convince me I should go but it was settled. Mr. Phillips pulled in the driveway and honked his horn. Preston and Brad came running to the door to help Lance with his gear. They loaded in the car and off they went. I have to admit I felt sad that Lance was going to be gone for the weekend. It was only three days all together. It hadn't been 5 minutes since he left and I was already getting lonely. The only way to get over this is to get to work and get my mind on something else. I could see I was going to get a lot of work done this weekend. If you enjoyed this story you may enjoy some of my other stories posted on Nifty.
