"There you are children. Have you had your fill?" Beto inquired. Javier answered respectfully as the spokesman since he was the oldest, "Yes Senhor Director." Assuming a semi-kneeling position with one knee on the floor, Beto felt his reply would be easier and less cold if he were on the same eye level, he said, "Javier. Clara. My name is Beto Perreira. This gentleman is my colleague Paulo Oliveira. You have our permission to address us by our first names if you'd like. In a manner of speaking we know you. We were not only friends with your brother, Antonio, but also with your grandmother whom we called Lady Flavia. Your mother has brought you here to be with us. She felt it is in your best interest that you be in our care so you wouldn't have to live on the streets any longer. Is that all right?" "Yes Sir. What is going to happen to us Senhor Beto? We have no money." "Well since you have no money, you will come with us and live in our home in Ipanema. First we'll have to get clothes for both of you. Once we get home we'll assign you a bedroom of your own. You will take baths and dress in your new clothes so that you can investigate our...your home inside and out. Within a week I hope you will be enrolled in a school. Have you had any schooling?" "Yes Sir. We both went to school until last year when we had to leave home." "Very good. Since we all must have jobs, your job will be school and keeping your bedrooms neat and tidy. Before we leave, Paulo will make several telephone calls to friends of ours to notify them of our good news. I suspect you will soon meet Senhor Julio and Senhora Elena, our best friends, whom also knew your vovo and Toninho nearly as well as we did. I know you will know and love them as much as we do. If you have any fears or concerns feel free to ask any of us about them. We'll be truthful and honest with you and I hope you will be the same with us." "Paulo, will you do the duty of notifications?" "Of course I will, gladly. Should I notify Ricardo too or should I wait until we get home?" "I'll leave that to you. Whatever you think is best. I'll take the children to my office and we'll wait until school is over here and then we'll be off to get some clothing for them before heading off to home, eh?" Nodding in agreement, Paulo with a broad smile left the kitchen walking briskly with determination to fulfill notification to those immediate friends whom he most wanted to inform. Breaking her silence Carla posited, "Senhor Beto will Mamae know where we are going to live?" "I think your Mae already knows, sweetie. But we'll find out from Javier where your family lives so we can notify them and tell them they are welcome to visit with you whenever they wish. Will that be okay with both of you?" "Yes Sir!", they both declared in tandem with effusive smiles emanating from their faces. Rising from his genuflection, Beto announced, "Come with me children. I have some work that must be done before we leave. In the meantime you can watch television, read some magazines or I could find you some coloring books to entertain yourselves while we are waiting." Paulo swiftly entered his office, picked up the telephone and used speed dial to contact Julio and Elena d'Souza Calvalcante's private number. After several rings Elena answered, "Hello? Who's calling please?" "Elena, it's Paulo! We've found Toninho's brother and sister, Javier and Clara. I can't begin to tell you how thrilled we are. Their mother sent them here with a letter and documents of birth and of her marriage to her first husband, Toninho's father. She also included sign-offs of custody for them." "My darling Paulinho, I'm so pleased to hear your news. Are they physically and mentally well?" "As far as we know they are. Physically they seem to be fine...I haven't even considered the mental state yet. I guess we'll have to have physicals and a psychological workup on them. We'll be leaving shortly, stop to get them some clothing, then go on to home. You know the routine. Elena, I'm nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I don't even know what kind of food they like. Perhaps we should get some takeout food for our dinner tonight." "Not on your life will I allow you to do that. I want you to bring yourselves over here and eat with us. We've plenty and if the children have favorites we can get our cook to make up something in a hurry. We want to meet them too, my dear, as soon as possible. Come over around 2000. That way we can meet the children and still have time to eat and get them back home early enough so they can have a full-nights sleep." "That's a wonderful idea, Elena. That way they'll be able to shower or bathe before we come over there. I'm certain Beto needs to go over some things with both of you, if you don't mind." "When has it ever been an inconvenience to be with the two of you? We love you deeply. Have you contacted Ricardo yet about your news?" "Not yet, I had forgotten there is a time difference between here and Florida. I thought we should wait for several hours and try to get hold of him then." "Do it all from here. We have the same IPS, so we can IM him when he's online. The first thing he does when he gets home is log on to check his mails. At least he did that when we stayed with him last November for those two weeks. He's routine motivated as you know. In fact, I predict he'll get the first flight out and be down here as quick as a rabbit after he notifies his college he'll be gone for a bit. Are you a betting man Paulo?" "You mean you want to wager on this with me, Elena? I know him as well as anyone, but I can't predict what he'll do when he gets this news." "Okay. We'll see you and the children around 2000. I can't wait to find out more about this. I'll give Julio a call and let him know. He'll be as excited as I am, I'm certain." "Yes, thank you Elena. I'll ring off now and get back to our children. See you later. Bye." "Good-bye my dear." Before returning to Beto and the children, Paulo checked to see if the night staff were on duty for their eight hour shifts and made certain the night supervisor was aware that he and Beto could be contacted at the either their home number or the Cavalcante's home if anything needed their attention. As Paulo entered Beto's office he noted the children were sleeping on the sofa. He whispered to Beto, "It's been a long day for them but it'll be longer yet. Everything is in order here. We've been invited over to Elena's for dinner around 2000. Is that all right Beto?" "Oh sure. Let's let them sleep for another 15 minutes before we awaken them. You are aware we have some changes and adjustments to be made within our home life don't you?" "Huh? What do you mean?" "We'll have to find someone to be at our home for every moment we are away for the sake of the children's safety and supervision. I insist these children will not be latch-key children. With only the two of us it wasn't necessary for a home-worker except on a part-time basis. I don't know if we need a Nanny or full-time maid/attendant. More importantly we'll have to be more circumspect about our life-style around them. No snuggling, kissing and less on-the-spur-of-the-moment lovemaking unless it's confined within the privacy of our bedroom. No nude sunbathing anymore because we have a young lady living with us. Nudity around Javier seems less problematic, but certainly not with a young lady about." "Oh Beto, I hadn't thought about that at all. Will this affect our relationship because of it?" "Truthfully, Paulinho, I don't know. We've much to discuss with Elena and Julio on these points and more. I'm certain there will be more points except I haven't fully thought about them for the time being. We'll have to `wing it'. What about transport to and from school? One of us should be home or available when after school hour events come up. What happens if an accident or sickness to one of them should occur at school, during sports activities or God knows what or where? Who will have the authority to deny access to websites while either of us are at work? They need schooling in living a wholesome home-life as well as academically. Do we hire someone to placate injured feelings, or kiss their hurts and bandage their knees? Are we to deny access to the pool when either of us are not here? They'll certainly make friends from school or from the neighborhood. Which of us will verify that they have made the right choices? A nanny? I don't think so. Do we hire someone to fix Clara's hair and show her how to choose her clothing wisely? I have no doubt that we will make mistakes in our role as guardians. I don't know how to be a guardian on a personal level. On an institutional level I'm in familiar territory. I'm willing to learn. I want to learn, but not at the expense of these children. I want the best for them. On the other hand I don't want them to become spoiled and expect all will be given them on a whim. There are guidelines and parameters of limitations that must be considered and put into effect as soon as possible. If only we had our Lady Flavia here there would be no problems that I can think of. I can hear your mind spinning with questions too, Paulinho. What do you think? You have lots of experience with mentoring and guiding Toninho whilst Ricardo was away." "My experience was short-term. When he returned after two months absence, we shared the problems. Then we went to Porto Alegre and he convinced the Lady Flavia to come to our home straight away. She was the one who soothed and smoothed the three of us. I think we need to make a visit to the cemetery. We must ask/pray to both her and Toninho to give us direction and guidance. You bring up valid questions that we need ponder and settle before we injure these kids by wrangling or arguing. I want Ricardo's input on this too including those of Elena and Julio. I don't want us to become parents in committee. We'd never reach a positive solution with so many variables of different minds and values. I know your not shirking responsibility by bringing up these questions. You posit on answers and solutions to ponderables. Look at them, Beto, so soft and vulnerable. They aren't Ken and Barbie dolls. They're flesh and blood, with young minds filled with the hot hopes of a world full of life and need. For all intents and purposes we are their surrogate parents whom must lead them to make the right decisions when they reach adulthood. I want them to dream of their aspirations so they can fulfill their destiny. We'll support them, encourage them, teach them, love them and hold them close to our bosoms until they're ready to `fly'. We are honor bound to do the right thing for them. For our Lady Flavia, for our Toninho, for Ricardo we've been given this responsibility by their own blood mother for whatever her reasons. We cannot, we must not fail them! I strongly believe we must confess that we are homosexuals not heterosexuals. In the long run, I don't believe they care one whit other than they are loved and protected." "I don't care if you're homeral or hoteral. I like you Senhor Paulo." Issued from a recently sleeping young man as he stretched whilst yawning. "From the mouths of babes, Paulinho." ************************************************************************ Send comments to: richard@tomcup.com To support this and other stories by the author, join at http://www.tomcup.com.
