Miguel Sanchez The Pilot - Book II Chapter 7 I couldn't see anything on their torsos so I had to check out their lower bodies. I got my trauma scissors out and cut the legs on the girl's jeans. I tossed the scissors to Shane and had him to the same thing. When I pulled the left pant leg back there were not marks or anything really noticeable other than a few healing scrapes which is typical for a child. Shane pulled the left leg back on the boys' jeans and found basically the same thing. I heard the boy moan and Shane went to his head. I heard the boy say, "I'm Robert and that is my sister Amy. Who are you?" Shane said to him, "That's my Daddy and he's going to help you." At that, the boy slipped into unconsciousness. I went back to looking at the girl and pulled her other pant leg back. What I saw almost made me faint. I went to Robert and looked at his other leg and what I saw was even worse. I saw four puncture marks on Amy's leg and six on Robert's. I knew these tow kids were victims of snakebites and they needed treatment. I reached on my belt at grabbed the radio and called Dade Central. I told Central that I had two victims of snakebites and needed air transport. I also said that they would need a paramedic on board because there were two patients. Just then Chief Robert's came on and said, "I have a helicopter warming up and will be to you in about 4 minutes." I replied saying, "Great Chief. I'm going to need you to send some anti-venom with the crew and have them start to mix it. These kids are in serious trouble and may not make it." "Roger Buck," the Chief said, "I'll send the anti-venom with the paramedic. Ace will be to you shortly." I put the radio back and pulled out IV sets and started a line on both Amy and Robert. This would save time getting the anti- venom into them. I would have to give each of them a small dose to see if they will have an allergic reaction to it first. If time hadn't been so critical I would have requested separate choppers so they could be watched better but I really didn't have that luxury so I would just make do. I heard Ace's bird coming and said, "Put it down about fifty yards from us." He did and out jumped the paramedic and an EMT. The paramedic handed me the anti venom then said, "Hi Lieutenant, I'm Jimmy Rivers. This vile is all ready to go." Jimmy handed me a syringe and I withdrew 3 cc's on the medication and injected it into Amy's IV. Jimmy was doing the same for Robert. The EMT was bringing basket stretchers over to us and we got the kids loaded and ready for transport. As soon as we got them inside, I gave the EMT my keys and said, "Bring my truck to the hospital and we'll see you there." Jimmy and I hooked the kids up to heart monitors and Amy's was still very slow. I gave her an injection of epinephrine to help her heart. Ace took off and it took about 14 minutes to get to the trauma canter. I put on a headset and called the hospital with my report. They said they would be standing by for us when we landed. Amy's condition hadn't improved any during the flight and it wasn't looking to good for her. I administered the anti venom to both her and Robert so all I could do now was watch them and wait. We touched down on the roof of Jackson Memorial Hospital and I saw two gurney's waiting. As soon as the rotors had stopped, Jimmy opened the door and Amy was pulled out onto one. Robert was next to go and he had not woken either. We wheeled then into the trauma room when they were both stripped and examined. A young doctor came in and took over their care. I was standing by Robert when he said, "Are you the snakebite paramedic from California?" I nodded my head and said, "Yes sir, I'm Buck Taylor." "Nice to meet you Buck," he said. "I'm Randy Wright." I followed him over to Robert where he started examining him. He looked at me then the IV and I said, "I started it. Is there something wrong?" He shook his head then said, "Nope. It's nice to see an IV put where we can work with it." I looked at the monitors and Robert was definitely the stronger of the two. I said, "Hey Doc, what are the chances of the girl making it. It looks like her kidney's are starting to shut down." Her urine output was almost nonexistent and even with all the fluids we were giving her, she had put out less then 100cc's. Dr. Wright looked at me and said, "There is an open room next door. I want you to move Robert over there and put this Foley into him." I moved him over to the other room and started to prepare him for the catheter. I started getting the things I needed when I looked over and saw him watching me. I walked over to the gurney and said, "Well, hello there Robert. How are you feeling?" "I hurt sir," he said in a weak voice. "That's to be expected," I said to him stroking his forehead. "We can get you something for that but right now I have to put this tube in you." He looked at in and said, "Where does that go?" "It's so you can pee without getting out of bed," I said to him. "My dick?" he said quietly. I smiled at him and said, "That's right, your dick. It will be a little uncomfortable and may sting a little but it shouldn't hurt." "All right sir," he said knowing there wasn't much he could do abut it. "Robert," I said talking over my shoulder. "My name is Buck so please stop calling me sir." He smiled and said, "Yes sir." I ruffled his hair then moved the sheet and gown so I could see his groin. I looked up at him and said, "How old are you Robert?" "Almost 13 Buck," he said. "Why do you ask?" I looked into the supply cabinet and said, "So I know what size catheter to put in." I got two out then went to the side of the bed and lowered the rail. He had a pretty fair amount of blonde hair surrounding his two inch cut tool. I picked it up and looked at the slit so I didn't try to put one in him that was too big. He started getting a little erection and I heard him giggle. He said, "I guess it like your touch Buck?" I smiled at him and said, "I'm not trying to make that happen son. I want you to try and relax so I can slide the tube in without causing you any unnecessary pain." I went over to the table and opened the package then put one sterile glove on. I really needed another pair of hands but I didn't want Robert embarrassed. I took some cleaning solution and cleaned the head of his penis then picked up the catheter and dipped the end of it in sterile KY jelly. I gently lifted his penis with one hand then started to insert the catheter into him. I said, "Relax and breathe slowly in and out of your mouth." He did as I instructed and the catheter went in without any problems. I quickly connected to the catch bag then blew up the balloon in the tip so it wouldn't slide out. I took my glove off and Robert said, "That didn't hurt to bad Buck. You're good." I smiled at him and said, "Thanks son. Can you tell me why you and your sister were out there today instead of being in school?" "Yeah," he said looking at his tool. "My mom's boyfriend was still drunk and wouldn't get up to get us to the bus stop. He told us he couldn't drive and get out until she got back. So we went and played. We didn't know there were snakes around there." He started getting upset so I said, "I know you didn't son. It's not your fault." I turned around to go check on Amy when Dr. Walker came in. He saw Robert awake then he came over and whispered into my ear, "His sister just passed. We did everything we could Buck but as you know yourself, she was just too far gone." I looked at him and said, "I have a little bit of a rapport built up with him so let me tell him." I turned and looked at the frail little boy lying alone in the bed. How could I tell him his sister just died? I walked over to the side of the bead and took his hand. He looked up at me and said, "Amy's dead isn't she? It's OK Buck, you can tell me" I rubber his hand in mine and said, "Yes Robert, your sister just passed away. I'm very sorry. Dr. Walker and his staff did everything they could to try to save her." I could see tears start to roll down his cheeks so I sat on the edge of the bed and just held him as he cried. He stayed there for several minutes then he looked at us and said, "It's all right. She's not suffering and is in a better place than here. Dr. Walker, I know you did everything you could so don't feel bad. I don't ever want to see my mother or Ralph again. This is all their fault. I would rather be in a foster home than have to go back and live with them." I held onto him as he broke down crying again. I looked at Dr. Walker and said, "Robert told me he was in pain." "Thanks Buck," Robert said. "I know that sounded mean and hateful but I mean it. They party all the time. They drink, do drugs and forget about my sister and me. I make the meals we eat because they are either too drunk or too stoned to care. Where is the little boy who I saw before?" "That was my son Shane," I said. "When you get into a room I will bring him in to see you. How does that sound? He pulled me down close to his mouth and said, "I heard what he said about my tits. I hope you don't mind this but I think he's kind of cute." I smiled at him and said, "I think he thinks you're cute also." Dr. Walker cam in with a syringe and slowly injected the medicine into his IV. I saw Robert's eyes close so I knew he was now sleeping comfortably. We looked through his clothing to see if there was something with his address on it. We found a card from Social Services in his pocket. I went to the phone and asked to speak with a Ms. Eggleston. A lady came on the phone and said, "This is Ms. Eggleston." Is said, "Ms. Eggleston, this is Lt. Buck Taylor with the Metro Dade Fire Rescue Services. I found your card in the pocket of a young boy about twelve. His first name is Robert and he has a sister named Amy. Would happen to know anything about these kids?" "Well Lieutenant," she said. "I'm not supposed to release personal information but I think you may be talking about Robert and Amy Wright. Robert is twelve and his sister is eleven." I interrupted her and said, "Was eleven." "Was?" she asked. "Has something happened to Amy?" I looked at my watch and it was just after three. I said to her, "Can you some to Jackson Memorial?" She said, "Yes Lieutenant, I can come there. I'll be there in about thirty minutes. Should I ask for you?" "Yes," I said. "You can ask for me or Dr. Wright. We are going to be moving Robert to a room shortly so if we're not in the emergency department they can have us paged." I hung up with the woman and went and talked with Dr. Wright. I was looking for him when I saw Shane. He came running up to me and said, "How is Robert? Is he OK Daddy? Is he alive?" I hugged him and said, "Yes to all of the above. He's sleeping right now. The doctor gave him something for pain and it put his to sleep. We're going to be moving him to a room and you can see him when we gets in there." "Oh Daddy," he said sighing into my stomach. "That's the best news I've heard. Here are the keys to the truck. The EMT gave them to me to hold onto. Ace said he would talk with you later." I found the doctor's lounge and saw Dr. Wright in thee drinking a cup of coffee. I walked in with Shane and said, "Doctor, this is my son Shane. Shane, this is Dr. Walker. He is Robert's doctor." He looked up and said, "Hi Shane nice to meet you. You have a pretty smart Dad here." "I know," he said smiling. "He's the smartest Daddy in the world." I looked at Shane and said, "I don't know about that and if you keep talking, you'll give me a swelled head." "Sorry Daddy," Shane said as I fixed myself a cup of coffee. I looked at Dr. Wright and said, "Robert told me a lot about his home life and personally I don't think it would be in his best interests if he returned. I found this card in his pocket and I have called her. "I know her," Randy said. "She's good and fair." I finished my coffee just in time to see them rolling Robert's gurney past the door. Shane and I walked with them and I helped to get him situated in his room. He was in a private room in the cardiac unit. It had a card key lock on it and I found out that the paramedic's ID card opened the door. After the nurses left Shane pulled his chair right beside the bed and held his friend's hand. Dr. Walker came in followed by another woman and said, "Buck this is Ms. Eggleston from DSS." I shook her hand and said, "Pleased to meet you, this is my son Shane. We found Robert and Amy this afternoon. Is there some place you and I might talk privately?" Randy took us to the physician's lounge on the floor and we sat and talked. I said, "Ma'am Robert told me some things that make me wonder if it might not be in his best interest if he were to be removed from his home. I'm not one to go off half-cocked and make statements like that being a licensed foster parent myself. I know there are too many kids and not enough homes. The lady listened to what I had to say then she said, "We had had reports about these children and every time things are border line and we couldn't remove the children. With the death of one of her children we have no choice until an investigation is complete." "He's going to be in here about a week until he is better but is going to need someone with medical skills to provide some care," I said. "I have started to build a rapport with him and so has my son. I would like to be his foster parent. I was Shane's before I adopted him and my license in California is still in effect. I think Robert might be versed to this arrangement also." She reached into her briefcase and pulled out an application to be a foster parent. She said, "Since you are already licensed the process should go quickly. If I get a positive report from California we could have you licensed in the morning." I filled out the paperwork and then we went to see Robert. I introduced the lady to Shane and Robert knew her already. I looked at the young child whose life had been turned upside down in the matter of a few hours. I said, "Robert, Ms. Eggleston would like to talk with you for a few minutes. Would you like Shane and me to step outside?" "No sir," he said rather firmly. "I told you how I felt and I'll say it in front of her too. I don't wasn't to go back home Ms. Eggleston. I would rather be in a foster home where I can live a normal life." "Are you certain you won't change your mind?" "No ma'am," he said looking right at her. "Alright," she said. "I'll fill out the paperwork and place you into the system. Since you're in the hospital I won't know who I am going to place you with but we'll find you a nice home." I went outside with her and said, "This is going to be a long night for him not knowing where he's going to be going. There is a three-hour time difference between here and California and they could answer any questions you have plus fax you any paperwork you'll need." "OK Lt. Taylor," she said. "I'll see what I can do. I'm in the office until five and if I get a satisfactory report we'll tell Robert you'll be his new foster Dad." I shook her hand and said, "Thanks for all your help. Dr. Walker said you were both good and fair." She left and went back to her office. I went back inside and sat with Robert and Shane. When I went inside, Robert was showing Shane his catheter. I cleared my throat and Shane said, "I wasn't doing anything Daddy." I looked at Robert and said, "Is there anything you might think we should know about son?" "Well," he started. "You remember what I told you downstairs, don't you?" I smiled and said, "Yes son, I do." He turned his head and looked at Shane then said, "I heard what you told you Dad about my tits." Shane turned several shades of red then said, "Well yeah, I do think that." Robert looked back at me then said, "I don't know what you're going to think when I tell you this. I hope you won't hate me or anything but I'm gay and I think Shane is very hot." Shane leaned down and kissed Robert's hand then said, "Cool news dude. I guess you know why I said what I did then, huh?" "I have an idea Shane," Robert said looking at him. Shane smiled and said, "That's right Robert I'm gay too." I looked at the boys and said, "Robert I think you should keep that information quiet. Life for a gay person is very hard. If it sounds like I speak from first hand experience, I am. I'm gay also. Shane is my legal son so there is nothing no one can say or do about that. So do you understand what I'm saying?" "Yes sir," Robert said. "I knew my mother would never understand and Ralph is a jerk." We talked and talked and the next thing we knew Ms. Eggleston was back. I stoop up and went outside with her and she said, "We got your record back from California and you had a glowing report. My supervisor said you are cleared to be Roberts foster parent. I think this will make him feel a little better. Based on what I just saw, you three seemed to have really hit it off." We walked back into the room and Ms. Eggleston said, "Robert, I have someone who is willing to be your foster parent." He looked at her and said, "That's fine. Can you tell me who it is? Will the come and see me here in the hospital?" "I can answer those questions," she said. "In answer to your second question, yes they will some and see you. In answer to your first, Lt. Taylor is going to be your foster parent." Shane almost leaped into Robert's bed he was so happy. Robert beamed and said, "Oh thank you Buck. Thanks so much. It's great to have a father now, not some drunk who orders you around and hits you." I walked over to him and kissed him on the head then said, "That will not happen in our home." I walked Ms. Eggleston to the security doors and chatted for a couple of minutes. I opened the door and she said, "Oh damn, here comes trouble." To be continued
