Miguel Sanchez The Pilot III Shane and Robert's Life Chapter 10 Linda next called John and Billy to let them know she had obtained a copy of Jake's birth certificate and was going to confront them as soon as the police arrived at her office. John was pleased to hear this as was Jake. Jake took the phone and said, "Be careful Linda. I don't know what he might do since he's being backed into a corner." "I will Jake," she said. "That's why I'm having the police with me. I don't think he's stupid enough to try anything with them there." "I don't know," Jake said. "He denied me and that's pretty stupid." Linda laughed at his statement then said, "I agree with you there kiddo. The police just got here sport, I gotta go." "OK Linda," he said. "Tell me what happens, please?" "I will Jake," she said. "I promise." Back at the house, I saw Robert get up so I met him in the hall and said, "We have to tell the twins their parents died. They just finished eating breakfast and I think the sooner we do this the better." "I agree," Robert said. "Maybe, we should have told them last night though." "I know but they were worried about Jake then," I said. "Now that Jake's home with Billy and John we can address this problem." "Alright," he said walking towards the kitchen. "Let me fix a cup of coffee. Did you tell Dad you want to do this now?" "No," I said. "But he always knows what to say at times like this." "Yeah he does," Robert said reaching for a coffee cup. He fixed his coffee and Aaron said, "Morning Robert." He ruffled his hair and said, "Hey there son. Did you sleep alright?" "Like a baby," Aaron said. I looked at Jeremy then Aaron and said, "I've got something to tell you both and it's going to be hard so bear with me a little alright?" The boys' faces got real solemn as I reached for Jeremy's hand. "What is it Shane?" Jeremy asked. I started to speak when Aaron said, "Is it about our parents?" Dad had somehow picked up on what I was going to say and he said, "Yes boys, it is." "What is it?" Jeremy asked. "Is Mom worse?" I didn't know exactly how to say this so I said, "In fact it's about both your parents. They both passed away early yesterday. Linda told me yesterday when she was here talking with Jake." Both boys broke down and cried. Jeremy threw himself into my arms and Robert had Aaron. "Why didn't you tell us then Dad?" Jeremy asked through his tears. I stroked his hair and rubbed his back as I said, "You were both so worried about Jake that I didn't think you needed any more to worry about. You had enough going on and we didn't want to add any more on your plate. We were tying to give you a day without worrying about anything. I'm so sorry guys." Aaron got real serious then said, "Alright, I knew we were both worried about Jake. I don't give two cents about our father. He can rot in hell for all I care after the way he's treated us when he found out we were gay but Mom, god, why?" "It's like I told you son," I said. "She had something big go wrong in her brain and the doctors tried to fix it. They did all they could son. "I'm sooo sorry." He broke down again after that. Robert held him and just let him cry himself out. Jeremy looked at me and said, "What's gonna happen to us now?" I kissed his cheek and said, "You don't have to worry about that. You have a place to stay for as long as you both want. I know you don't want to live with your grandparents, but would you happen to know how old they are?" "Over 80, I think," Aaron said looking at us as his tears began to subside. Jeremy turned and rested his head on my shoulder as he started to softly cry again. I looked at Robert and motioned to the bedroom. He agreed as we scooped the twins up in our arms and carried them to our room. We laid them down on the bed then slid beside them and held them as they cried themselves out. I just rubbed Jeremy's back trying to sooth him as best I could. After about fifteen minutes I noticed they weren't crying. Robert could see Aaron's face and he was now sleeping. I looked at Jeremy and he was sleeping too. We eased ourselves out from their grasp and closed the door to let them sleep. We went out to the kitchen and said, "I don't think I could be a doctor. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Dad, how did you manage to tell Robert his sister died?" "It wasn't easy son," he said patting my hand. "He already knew she wasn't doing very well so I told him the doctors did everything they could and he knew the rest of what I was going to say. It was very hard to do son and not everyone is cut out to do things like that. But you did the best you could son and you were very gentle." "You did better than I could have baby," Robert said. "Thanks, I guess," I said. "Now Dad, I was thinking about this yesterday after Linda told me they had died. I want to adopt Jeremy and Robert wants to adopt Aaron." Dad looked at me like I had totally lost my mind. "You know gays are forbidden from adopting here in Florida," he said. "I know," I said looking him in the eyes. "If you already know this," he started saying. "How do you propose to adopt them then?" He asked. "Who ever said Robert and me were gay?" I asked. "I've never told anyone that has outted me. John and Billy are a couple and they've even registered as such but that was when James turned 18, so his adoption is now moot." "Are you going to each adopt one boy as a single male and deny the fact you're gay?" Dad asked. I took the lead and said, "Look Dad, I'm not the easiest person to live with. I work crazy hours and I'm married to my career. No woman will put up with that." "Nice statement for court," Dad said. "But that could be your downfall as far as adopting Jeremy goes." "As for dating, yeah," I said. "But not for raising a teenaged son. I work 24 hours on and am off 48 but subject to call. Robert is a teacher and is home by 5 at the latest. The boys can get a ride home with him if need be. If Robert should have to work late, you're here. So I don't see a problem. Hell, John's parents travel at the drop of a hat and he adopted Little Buck." Dad looked at us and said, "Looks like you've thought this through haven't you?" I smiled and said, "As much as I had when I wanted you to make love to me that first time. I knew what I wanted then and I know what I want now." Robert looked at Dad and said, "Dad, at first I was against it but I want to be a Dad and I love the boys. Aaron has taken a shine to me and he is wiggling his way into my heart. I can stand up in court and deny I'm gay. Besides, isn't it their job to prove that I am? My record at Castle Prep is spotless. They all believe that Shane and I are brothers who live at home and take care of you." "Hey," Dad said. "I'm not an invalid. I'm 73 but I'm not ready to cash in my chips just yet." "I know Dad," I said. "But everyone believes we're just repaying you for the years you spent raising us and putting us through college. Besides, if you live to be a hundred, I could never repay you for everything you've done for me. I haven't a clue where I'd be right now if you hadn't been my foster Dad then adopted me. I know I don't say it as much now as I did when I was younger, but I love you Dad." We were all crying at this point. Robert wiped his eyes and said, "The same goes for me Dad. I thank my lucky stars everyday you fostered me. I have a life I'm happy with, a Dad, brother and boyfriend I love more than life itself. I can never repay you for that either." I blew my nose as I saw the twins stand there with tears running down their faces. I got up and went to Jeremy as Robert did for Aaron as Jeremy said, "Why are you crying Dad?" "We were just talking abut how lucky we are to have Dad in our lives and just how much we love him," I said hugging him. "We were also talking about how lucky we are to have two boys like you in our lives too." Aaron said, "We're the lucky ones. We have Dads who love us for us. We have a Granddad who can do things with us and teach us things. Hell, I don't even remember our grandparents. Jeremy, do you remember the last time we even saw them?" "No bro," he replied. "I think it was when we were like 4 or 5." Over at DCFS, Linda had left the office with the police and headed over to the Curtis residence. When they arrived, they went to the front door and knocked on it. A woman opened the door and Linda said, "Mrs. Curtis, I'm Linda Eggleston with the Department of Children's and Family Services and I'm here to talk with you about your son Jake. I told you yesterday if you hung up on me I would be here with the police, and today I am." She started to say something when her husband came to the door. "Who in the hell," he started saying when the male officer stepped into his line of sight. "What was it you were about to say sir?" Linda asked again. The man stood firm and said, "Lady I told you yesterday that we don't have a child. We've never had children in our lives." Linda looked at the woman and she was just standing there expressionless. "Sir then why would a boy give this address and telephone number to me and give me both your names claiming you're his parents?" "I have no idea," he said. "Our names are pretty common." The officers were listening to his babble then the male officer said, "Sir, the story the boy gave this woman is very compelling. Please step out here." Linda backed up as the man said, "Why?" The officer took the man by his wrist and said, "Timothy Curtis, you are under arrest for child abandonment." The man tried to pull back but the officer quickly twisted his wrist and had his arm behind his back. The female officer assisted him and they quickly had him in hand cuffs. The female officer then said, "Ma'am please step outside." She complied with her request and she was cuffed without incident. She took the woman inside so they could check the house to make sure everything was off, got the woman's purse then the officer locked the front door then pulled it closed. They took the two to their car and put them in the back seat then closed the door. Linda looked at her friend and said, "When will they appear before a judge?" "A judge will arraign them in a day or two," she said. "They have 72 hours to make their first appearance." "Sounds good," Linda said. "You have my number; call me if you need me." Linda drove back to her office to do some more paperwork then have some lunch. Back at home Jeremy asked, "I remember what you said that we will have a place here but what will the social worker do?" "I'm not exactly sure son," I said. "I'm sure they will check on your grandparents and if they are as old as you claim, they won't be suitable guardians. Once they have determined there aren't any relatives to take you, they will probably put you up for adoption." "Aaron gasped then said, "We don't want some stranger adopting us and we won't be split up." Jeremy said, "Well, any one that does we could tell them we're gay." "Not a good idea," Dad said. "Then you could be put in an orphanage and they would probably tell everyone else your secret." "Hadn't thought about that," Jeremy said. "So what are we going to do?" I smiled at them and said, "Well, we've been thinking about that too. Is there anyone you know who you would like to adopt you?" Aaron looked at Robert and said, "I'd love to have you adopt me Dad." Jeremy's eyes lit up when he heard what his brother said. "Yeah Dad," Jeremy said looking at me. "That idea works for me too." "We kinda thought you would go for that," I said. "I think what we should do is wait a while so you can get adjusted to life here. What are your grades like in school?" "Not bad," Aaron said. "We make A's and B's" Robert looked at them and asked, "What would you think about going to a private school?" "What some stuck up place?" Jeremy said. "No thanks Dad." "No son," Robert said. "It's not like that at all. It's really a very good school. We all went there when we were your age." Aaron looked at us and said, "We, as in both of you?" `No," I said, "We, as in us and John and Billy. Besides, your Dad teaches math there." "Cool," Jeremy said. "What grade do you teach?" Robert said, "I'm teaching Algebra II this year. Most of the students are in the 9th grade. What grade are you guys in?" "Jeremy looked down and said, "We're in the 9th but we should be in the 10th. We each failed a year. Robert gave Aaron a little kiss on the head then said, "Don't worry about it. It happens to the best of us." I looked at the boys and said, "We can talk to Linda or Ms. Walden about getting you over to Castle Prep. I know Social Services won't pay for you to go to a private school but we don't care about that. We just want you to get the best education you can." "The twins looked at each other then Jeremy asked, "Do we have to wear stupid looking uniforms?" Robert laughed and said, "Ummm now let me see. They wear shorts the come just above the knee, a light blue polo style shirt, knee socks and a cute little beanie on your head." I was fighting to keep from busting out laughing at Robert's description of the uniform. Aaron opened his mouth then acted like he was sticking his finger inside as if he was making himself gag. "Ah thanks Dad," Aaron said. "But we think we'll pass." I couldn't hold it any longer and I broke out laughing. The boys looked at me as if I'd lost my mind then I said, "No guys, it's not like that. They do wear shorts and have a light blue polo shirt but no knee socks or beanies. The shorts are grey and they also have trousers the same color. It's very casual there." Jeremy got a serious look on his face and said, "What about the fact that we're gay?" "What about it?" I asked. "It's not a problem just don't flaunt it. A couple of guys at school knew we were and they didn't have a problem plus they don't tolerate discrimination of any kind there. Students breaking the rules are punished quickly and there's nothing the parents can do about it. They have a code of conduct that is sent home and it must be signed by the student as well as both parents. That way if their child breaks the rules they can't say we didn't know what they were." "What happens if they just sign it and don't read it," Aaron asked. "That's their problem because they should have before signing," Robert said. Back over at John and Billy's house Jake was on the phone with Linda. "Hi Jake," she said. "I wanted to let you know that both your mother and father were arrested this morning." "That's great," Jake said smiling. "What did my father try to do?" "He was still saying they didn't have children but the police didn't believe them," she said. "Did he fight or anything?" Jakes asked. "He tried to pull away when the officer took his wrist but he was quickly put in handcuffs." Linda explained. "Your mother saw that they meant business and she went peacefully." "What now?" Jake asked. "They will see the judge in couple of days and he will set bail for them but I just don't see them getting out but that's up to the judge," she said. "I hope they have to stay there for ever," Jake said. "Well they will be punished," Linda said. "Now is not the time to worry about that. I'm hungry so I need to get something to eat Jake. I'll talk with you later." "OK Linda," Jake said. "I'm getting hungry too. Bye." Jake hung up the phone just as there a knock on the door. Billy got up and said, "I'll get it." To be continued
