Miguel Sanchez The Pilot III Shane and Robert's Life Chapter 13 I checked on the twins one more time and they were both sleeping soundly then I turned the lights off and slipped into my bedroom. I slid in between the sheets and found Robert so I could cuddle with him. I heard him moan as I got comfortable then drifted off to sleep. I heard the alarm go off at 6:30 and I was surprised that Robert woke up on his own. My bladder was yelling at me go, I needed to answer the call. I walked down the hall to get the twins up and when I went in to wake them they were up in deed. I gently shook them and said, "Come on guys, it's time to wake up." Jeremy rolled over and smiled at me saying, "Oooo hi Dad. That's a nice sight first thing in the morning." I reached down and gave his morning wood a little squeeze saying, "Well you two have some nice sights too." "Hey Dad," he said kicking off the covers and heading for the door. "Not fair." I laughed as Jeremy beat feet to the bathroom. Aaron got up and gave me a quick hug before going to empty his bladder. Jeremy came back in and gave me my hug then I said, "You guys should get a shower after the good time you had last night." He turned around and went back into the bathroom while I went to see Robert. Robert was dressed in his Castle teacher's polo shirt and grey slacks. He saw me naked and said with a grin, "Give me a minute and I'll join you." I kissed him and said, "No time baby. What time does first bell ring?" "Eight," he said caressing my balls. I went and tossed on a pair of shorts then went out a fix the twins some breakfast. I saw Dad sitting at the table drinking a cup of coffee. I went over and kissed him as I saw some of our old school uniforms. "Morning Daddy," I said. "What are these for?" "I found them this morning and the shirts should fit the twins," he said. "I don't know about the trousers. They'll have to try them on." Robert heard us talking when he said, "I have some shorts they can wear if they won't fit." I saw the boys come out of the shower and said, "Aaron, Jeremy come here." They were still naked as they headed up the hall. "Yeah Dad," Aaron said. Robert picked the pants up and said, "Try these on." They were a little short in the legs so Robert went into his room and brought out two pairs of shorts and gave them to the boys. I handed them the shirts and they looked at them when Jeremy said, "These look nice Dad. Sorry we gave you a hard time before." I saw Dad get up and reach into the fridge and pull out some eggs and then get a package of microwavable sausage and said, "How many eggs boys?" Aaron looked at his brother, "Two please but we can have cereal," Aaron said with a grin. Dad gave his patented look that says don't go there. "You guys better get something on cause you can't go to school like that, now scoot." They took their clothes and ran down the hall as I fixed a cup of coffee for Robert and me. I smiled at Dad, "I really enjoyed last night Dad. It was really special." He kissed me softly, "I know son, it was for me too. Maybe the next time Robert will be awake." I returned his kiss, "That would be nice." The boys came out in their uniforms and boy did they look sharp. Dad saw them, "You guys look fantastic." "Thanks Grandpa," Jeremy said sitting down at the table. Dad took the sausage out of the microwave and put it on their plates then divided the eggs. He set the food in front of the boys and they dove in devouring it in record time. Dad giggled saying, "It's a good thing I got my hands out of the way." Robert was drinking his coffee and said, "I think we need to leave a little early so I can talk with the headmaster about the twins." "Good idea," Dad replied. "Call me if there is a problem and I'll get hold of Linda," I said. "I need to talk with her this morning about something and I asked her to get their school records over to Castle." "Alright," Robert said putting his cup in the dishwasher. The twins went down the hall to brush their teeth and use the bathroom. I kissed Robert, "We're going to get their parents over to a funeral home and make arrangements so they can be buried." "The boys will appreciate that baby," he said. "Seeing their Mom go into the ground is really gonna kill them." "I know sweetie," I said. "But this way they will be able to grieve and get it out. They really haven't yet and that worries me. Keep an eye on them today. We don't need them exploding at school." "I will," Robert said as the twins joined us. "You two ready to go?" "Yep," Aaron smiled. "This may sound weird but we do like school." The boys hugged and kissed Dad and me then they were all out the door. Dad sat down at the table and said, "I wonder what they will want to do with their lives?" "I don't know Dad. Hey, isn't real estate a matter of public record?" I asked. "What do you mean?" Dad asked. "I mean I found our house on line and it showed who owned it and if the taxes were current," "Good idea," Dad said. I took my coffee into the office and fired up the computer. I hoped the county's web sites were up and running as the modem connected to the web. I typed in the web site and thank god it was up. I got out a copy of our foster parents papers and found the boys' home address. I went to the real estate site and typed in their address. The name that came up was different than the boys' parents. `Damn,' I thought. `It looks like they were just renting that home.' I logged off and went back to the kitchen saying, "Well that answered that question Dad." "What did you find out?" he asked as I sat down. "They were just renting it," I said. "But they still might have insurance." "I have an idea son," Dad said. "My friend Jess Martin is living and practicing here now. He handled everything when your parents died. I bet he can look into this for us plus I would like him on our side for the twins' adoption, just in case." "Good idea Dad," I said getting up to rinse out my coffee cup. I went into the bedroom and got dressed then called Linda. She was sitting at her desk when I called and asked, "What can I do for you Shane?" "Have you taken Jakes school records over to his new school yet?" "Not yet," she said. "I was going over Mrs. Walden's cases." "Anything out of the ordinary?" I asked. "Not that I can tell," she said. "That's good," I said. "On your way to Jake's school, can you get the twins' records over to Castle Prep? Robert is going to get them enrolled today and try to have them attend classes pending their records." "Alright," she said. "I can have them there in about 90 minutes or so." "Dad and I are going over to the hospital to claim their parent's bodies and have them taken to a funeral home," I said. "After that, do you think it would be alright if Dad and I entered their home?" "Hummm," Linda said. "You might want the police to meet you there since the twins aren't with you." "Good idea," I said. "I didn't want them to have to go back in there but I may not have any alternative since I don't know what they have of importance. I'll talk with them when they get home from school. They may be able to answer those questions." "That would probably be the best thing Shane," Linda said. "It could be like looking for a needle in a haystack." "True," I said. "I'll talk with you later and thanks for everything." I hung up the phone and saw Dad standing there dressed and ready to go. We left and headed over to the hospital. Dad took the lead and soon we were at the hospital morgue. The woman at the desk said, "Yes, may I help you?" I looked at her and said, "Yes ma'am. What do we have to do to claim two bodies you have here?" "Are you a direct family relative?" She said. "No ma'am" I started to say. She interrupted me and said, "Then I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do for you. Good day." `What a bitch,' I thought. I bit my tongue and said, "I may not be, but my foster sons are." She looked up and me and said, "Well why didn't you say so?" "I would have if I hadn't been interrupted," I fired back. "What are the deceased names?" She asked realizing she had just been put in her place. "Jack and Joan Mitchell," I said. "And would you happen to know of a good funeral home?" She went into a file cabinet and pulled out two files. She pulled out some forms for me to sign and said, "Yes, there is one we use all the time and they are very good, caring and reasonable. If you'd like I can call them for you and have the bodies sent there." "Thank you," I said. "I put our home phone number on the form. There is someone there all the time. Please have them ask for me or my Dad before talking to who ever answers the phone." "I'll let them know that," she said. We left the hospital and grabbed some lunch on the way home. All too soon, the twins were walking in from school with Robert. They came over and kissed Dad and me as Aaron said, "Man, that school is great, a lot better than our old one." Dad smiled at them and said, "I take it you had a good first day?" "Oh yeah," Jeremy said. "The teachers are nice and we even made a few friends." I looked up at Robert and said, "I take it there wasn't a problem getting them enrolled?" Robert shook his head no then said, "The headmaster was very understanding. I was in the office when Linda dropped off their records and I was really impressed when I looked at them. The headmaster was too and he waived the entrance exam." I looked at the boys and said, "Looks like we have some real scholars here." "Aww Dad," Jeremy said. I giggled then asked, "Did you pay their tuition or do I need to give you a check?" "We need to pay that tomorrow," Robert said. "I forgot the checkbook." "Alright," I said heading into the bedroom. "How much is it?" "The headmaster gave me the prorated figure," Robert said pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket. "It's $5,756.50 for each of them." Jeremy gasped when he heard that and said, "Daddy please, you don't have to do this." "Nonsense," I said smiling as I started filling out the check. "We want you to have a good education." "You can't afford to send us there," Aaron said. I smiled at them and said, "Just because Robert and I work doesn't mean we can't afford to send you there." Robert smiled and said, "That's right son. I get a discount because I teach there." "But still Dad," Aaron said. "That a lot of money." I didn't want to tell them about our finances but it was they only way I could put them at ease. "Come over here and sit down," I said. "Now, I normally don't go into money matters with people but I want you listen to what I have to say." The boys nodded their heads and Jeremy said, "OK Dad." "We work because we want to," I said looking at them. "It's not because we have to. When my parents were killed, they had large life insurance policies on each of them plus our house was paid for so there wasn't a mortgage on it. Dad asked me if I wanted to rebuild it or just take the insurance money and I decided to take the money since Dad was going to adopt me. Well, after all the bills were paid and the house was settled I had almost a million dollars put into a trust for me. That was when I was 11 and I couldn't touch it without Dad's approval until I was 25. I didn't really need anything so I never touched it. All that time it sat there drawing interest making me even more money. Let's just say that I have enough money for us to live comfortably for the rest of our lives. So please stop worrying about your tuition at school." I had to wipe my face because talking about my parent's deaths brought back some unhappy memories. Jeremy said, "Gee Dad we're sorry." "Nonsense," I said. "You thought we were going to have to work harder and you were concerned. It's alright. Now, there is something we need to talk with you about." "What's that Dad?" Aaron said. "Granddad and I went to the hospital today and claimed your parents' bodies and had them sent to a funeral home so we can arrange for them to be buried," I said as the boys started crying. Jeremy looked at Aaron then said, "Thank you. That's something neither of us had thought about." "I know," I said. "Neither of you have really grieved or anything since you learned of their passing. We were beginning to get worried about you." "We tend to keep things inside," Aaron said. "We never really had anyone we could talk with." Dad looked at them and said, "You have a lot of people you can talk with now son. There is the 3 of us and if you feel you can't talk with us then you have John, Billy or Jake. You guys have a huge family now." They started losing it as Robert and I wrapped our arms around them. "We know Granddad," Jeremy said through his tears. "It's gonna take us some time to remember all this." I stroked Jeremy's hair and said, "It's alright son. We love you guys more than you know." Jeremy raised his head and kissed me on the cheek then said, "I love you too Dad." Aaron kissed Robert's cheek and said the same thing. "That's another thing we're not used to. We never heard that at home from our father so it's hard when we hear it now but we do love you guys too." The boys wiped their faces then I said, "The next thing we need to talk with you about are the things at your house. I looked online this morning to see if your parents owned the house you were living in and from what I could find out, they were just renting. Is that correct?" "Yeah," Aaron said. "Mom wanted to buy one but he said it was a waste of money." "OK," I said. "Do you know if there were any life insurance policies?" They looked at each other and Jeremy said, "Now that is something I don't know." "Is there anything other than your clothes you boys want to keep?" Robert asked. "Yeah," Jeremy said. "We have a lot of things in our room that we want to keep." "What is it you want?" Dad asked. "I ask this so we can make room for it in your bedroom." "It's not much," Aaron said. "We have a bunch of video games from our old system that broke, some CD's and DVD's and a couple of pictures of Mom." "That's fine," Dad said. "Is there anything else you can think if you might want?" "I dunno," Jeremy said looking down at the table like he was going to cry. I wrapped my arm around him saying, "It's ok. You guys can look around when we go over there." "You want us to go there?" Aaron said looking surprised at my statement. "We're going to need your help to look for those papers," Dad said. "There are a couple of file boxes Mom kept important stuff in," Jeremy said. "We can bring them with us and go through them here." "That's fine," Robert said. Do you have a key to the place?" Aaron nodded his head, "Yeah, we still have ours with us." I wanted to get this over with as soon as possible, "Well, would you like to do this now and get it over with?" Jeremy said, "I guess so. Then we will never have to go there again." We had the boys get their key then drove over to their house. We went inside and Jeremy got the file folders while Aaron, Robert and I started getting the clothes they wanted to keep. Everything in their small dresser they wanted to take so we took the drawers and loaded them into the truck. Jeremy found the games, music and movies and put them in a backpack. Once that was done, they looked in the living room to see if there was anything they wanted to take. They each found a few small items they wanted then we locked the house and left. When we got home we unloaded everything and helped them put everything thing in their dresser. Dad brought the clothes in and Aaron helped him sort out whose was whose. Each boy had one side of the walk in closet. Robert got a hammer a few picture hangers and they hung the pictures of their mother then Dad said, "Welcome home boys. This is now officially your room." Jeremy ran to me and started crying saying, "I went in there and it was like I was waiting for her to walk out and say something," I held him close and said, "I know son. I couldn't go back into my house after my parents died." "Why not?" Aaron asked. Dad rubbed my head and said, "His house was burned down during a big wildfire. He parents were inside at the time." Jeremy hugged me tighter and I felt Aaron hug me as he said, "I'm so sorry Dad. I didn't know how they died." I was standing there crying with the boys. I felt Robert behind me as he wiped my face and kissed me gently saying, "Let it out baby." We all cried for several minutes and finally we were able to regain our composures. I heard my stomach rumble and the boys heard it too causing them to giggle. Robert and Dad went out and started dinner while the boys and I washed our faces. After dinner, we watched television until it was time for bed. I was up early with Robert so I turned in with him. We kissed Dad and the twins good night then I collapsed into a deep and restful sleep. To be continued
