Miguel Sanchez The Pilot III Shane and Robert's Life Chapter 14 After dinner, we watched television until it was time for bed. I was up early with Robert so I turned in with him. We kissed Dad and the twins good night then I collapsed into a deep and restful sleep. The next day while the boys were in school Dad and I started going through the file folders Jeremy found. I pulled out some papers and started looking at them. I was a little lost at what I was looking at. "Hey Dad," I said to him as he was fixing a cup of coffee. "Come here and take a look at this and tell me what it is?" Dad came in and looked at the papers and said, "Have you ever seen a stock certificate before?" "I shook my head no and asked, "Is that what that is?" He looked at the different pieces of paper and said, "Yes it is. There are a lot of different ones here. I think I'm going to need to call Jess Martin and have him help us make some sense of this. I don't know anything about stocks so he's going to have to find out what these are worth and depending on their value this may have to go to probate like your stuff was." "I remember that Dad," I said. "Let's hope this is worth something. The boys deserve something for the future." Dad called Jess and he said he could come over after lunch. Over in the DA's office ADA Christine Mellon was just handed the file on the Curtis'. She looked at the reports and charges then said, "Are they sure about this?" The DA looked at her and said, "I checked it out myself. I said the same thing when I read it." "They are a pair of heartless bastards in my book," she said. She picked the phone and called John at work figuring he would be the easiest person to get a hold of. She called his office, "Is this John Phillips?" "Yes, this is he," he replied. "Mr. Phillips," she started. "This is Christine Mellon from the DA's office. I've been assigned to prosecute Timothy and Maria Curtis." "Oh yes," he said. "What can I do for you?" "I just read the file and there are several people I'm going to need to interview," she said. "One of those people is your foster son. When would it be possible to talk with him?" "That all depends," John said. "Can my partner or I be present?" "Of course," she said. "I can't talk with him unless one of you is present." "I get off at 4 and can be home by 4:15," John said. "Jake and Billy get home about 4:30. You can talk with him any time after that." "That's fine," she said. "I know this is short notice but could I talk with him this afternoon?" "That will be fine," he said. "I'll look forward to seeing you then." She next called Linda Eggleston and agreed to see her after lunch. Her next call was to me and I wasn't quite ready to deal with another major problem but I wanted to see Jake's parents in prison. I heard the phone ring and said, "I got it Dad." I answered it and a voice said, "May I speak with Shane Taylor." "This is Shane Taylor." The woman said, "This is Christine Mellon from the DA's office." I asked her, "Are you going to put the Curtis' away?" "I'm going to try," she said. "I need to speak with you since I see you were one of the paramedics that found Jake Curtis." "Yes ma'am," I said. "I'll be glad to talk with you but I kinda have my hands full this afternoon with something." "That's fine sir," she said. "I'm meeting with Jake and his foster parents late this afternoon and I don't know how long it's going to take. Can we meet sometime tomorrow morning?" "That will be fine," I said. "Otherwise it will have to be later in the week because I'm back at work." "How does 10 sound?" She asked. "That will be fine, I'll see you then." I hung up the phone and went back into the dining room with Dad. When I got back, Dad was looking at the certificates and putting them into piles. Dad explained that each certificate was worth a certain number of shares. I saw about 10 different piles then asked, "I take it each pile is a different company?" "That's right," Dad said. "I see some pretty good companies here too. I think the boys just might have a tidy next egg for when they get older. Here, take a look at this." He handed me two envelopes. I pulled some papers out of the first and saw that it was a life insurance policy. I carefully read it and saw it was worth $250,000.00. I quickly looked at the other and saw it was worth the same amount. I covered my mouth and said, "Did you see these, Dad?" "Not yet," he said looking at papers and putting them in the proper stack. "These are life insurance policies," I said. "It seems their Mom was looking out for them after all. Each policy is worth $250,000." Dad looked at me and said, "It looks like the boys will be well set then. I'm glad I called Jess then. This will have to go to the probate court. I'll have Jess set up trust accounts for the boys so they won't have to worry about a thing." We ate lunch then Jess called saying he was running a little late. He finally got there about two. Dad brought him back to the dining room and said, "Does this guy look familiar?" I looked up and Jess said, "Damn Buck, is this that little kid you had?" "He's not so little now is he," Dad said as I stood to shake his hand. "Hi Mr. Martin," I said shaking his hand. "I guess I did grow a little." We talked for a few minutes then Dad and Jess got down to business. I was totally lost and I am really thankful for Dad. I don't know what I would have done without him. Jess looked over everything then said, "Here is what I would do guys. Since they've been renting, the most they would owe is a months rent. The landlord can't hold the boys responsible for the balance of the lease because they didn't sign it. Any outstanding debts they have will have to be paid out of the estate first but I think they would be negligible. The next thing I would do is sell these stocks. I don't have a clue what they're worth but I see a broker's name here and I know him and he's very reputable. I'll need Shane here to sign for the boys as their guardian requesting me to set up a trust for them." "Robert will have to sign too," I said. "I'm just Jeremy's foster parent. He and the twins should be here any minute now." No sooner had I said that, the front door burst open and a voice yelled, "Dad, we're home." I stood up and stuck my head out and said, "I'm in the dining room and I'm not deaf." Jeremy came in and hugged me then said, "Sorry Dad." I looked at Jess and said, "They actually do have manners." He looked behind him then turned red as he said, "I'm sorry. I'm Jeremy Mitchell, pleased to meet you sir." Robert and Aaron came in and I introduced everyone and Jess was impressed with the boys. Jess said he would contact the probate court in the morning and see if it had to go before them or not because it was going to be split in half. We all sat down and signed some papers for Jess then he needed to get home as it was now almost five. I looked at Dad and asked, "Do you remember that phone call I got before Jess got here?" "Yes I do," Dad said. "I was meaning to ask you about that." "That was the ADA who's prosecuting Jake's parents," I said. "She needs to talk with me and she'll be here tomorrow about 10." Christine was running a little late and it was almost five when she got to John and Billy's house. She rang the doorbell and John answered the door, "You must be Christine, I'm John Phillips. We talked on the phone earlier. Please, come in." "It's so nice to meet you," she said. "Let's go into the living room where we can talk and be comfortable," he said leading her. Jake and Billy and Joey were watching television when John said, "This is Christine Melon from the District Attorney's office." John took Joey to James' room and asked him to keep Joey occupied for a while so they could talk in private. James said "Sure Dad – no problem. Come here Squirt – whadda ya want to do?" Jake started getting nervous and looking around when Billy said, "Relax son, we'll be right here." "Alright Dad," Jake said surprising both Billy and John. Christine and John sat down and Christine said, "Jake, there is nothing to worry about here. You're not in any trouble. I need to ask you some questions about what happened so I can prepare my case against your parents." "Do you have any questions?" she asked trying to keep Jake calm. He looked at John and Billy and said, "Uh, I guess not." She took out a note pad then said, "Why don't you tell me what happened that day?" "He took a deep breath and said, "Well, me and my friend Tommy were back in my room when my father came in and started yelling. He told Tommy to get out and he grabbed me and threw me out of the house too." "Why did he do that?" she asked. "I dunno," Jake said. "You mean you and your friend were just in there talking and he threw the both of you out?" she asked. "Yes ma'am," Jake said. "I really have a hard time believing they would do that over nothing," she said. "Jake, look at me. Was there something going on that maybe you're ashamed to tell?" Jake started tearing up and he said, "Dad help me." Billy went to his side and held him as John said, "Yes there was but it really has no bearing on them throwing a child out in the street when a hurricane was coming." "I agree Mr. Phillips," she said. "But in order for me to prosecute this case, I need to know everything." Billy kissed Jake and said, "It's alright son, tell her." "Uh are you s-sure?" he stuttered. John nodded his head as Billy said, "We're sure." Jake turned red then said, "We were having sex." Christine patted Jake's leg and said, "That's not the first time I've heard that Jake. What were you two doing?" "Uh, we were having oral sex," he said looking down. "Is Tommy your age Jake?" she asked. "Yes ma'am," Jake replied. Christine smiled and said, "You're not the first child I've heard say that Jake and it certainly wasn't grounds for putting you out, nor denying his parental responsibility." Can you keep that from coming out in court?" Billy asked. She smiled and said, "I think I can do that. Once I've presented your birth certificate as evidence, they will have to go on the offensive and your father will have to testify. There's just no way around it that I see." "What if he tells everyone what I was doing?" Jake asked. "Sweetie," she started. "If he does, they aren't going to care about that. All they are going to hear is that he put you out with a major storm coming for you to fend for yourself. I know the jury won't like that at all." "Really?" Jake asked. "Yep," she said smiling at him. "Feel better now?" He smiled at her then surprised her by leaning over and hugging her. "Thanks Miss Melon," he said. "That's the best thank you I've ever received," she said hugging Jake. "That's all I have for now. I may need to talk with you again before the start of the trial but I'm going to try to plead this out so you won't have to testify." "How much time will he be looking at?" Billy asked. "I'm going to see that he does at least 5 years and that he loses his parental rights," she said. "What about the mother?" John asked. "She did nothing to stop him." "Same offer," she said. "Sounds good," Billy said. "Well gentlemen," she started. "It's late and I need to get home. It's been very nice meeting you Jake." "Nice meeting you too," Jake said as they all walked her to the door. After she left John said, "It wasn't that bad having to tell her, now was it?" "That's easy for you to say Dad," Jake said. "You weren't the one saying it but I do feel better not having to keep that a secret now." John and Billy went into the kitchen and started fixing dinner while Jake went down and played with his brothers. When he came in Joey asked, "Was that about what your parents did to you?" "Yeah," Jake said as Joey hopped up on his lap. "It will be alright," he said snuggling into Jake's lap. You're my big brother. Our Dads won't let nuthin happen to you." Jake kissed the little boy on the head and relaxed holding his little brother until it was time for dinner. All five of them had an enjoyable dinner and after it was over Joey asked, "Can Jake take a bath with me?" "Un well," Jake said. "I guess if it's alright?" John and Billy nodded their heads in approval and the two boys headed for the bathroom. Back at home, after dinner we talked with the twins again about our meeting with Jess Martin. Jeremy looked at me and asked, "What was all that stuff on the table when we got home?" "They were stock certificates," I said. "It seems your mother was looking out for you guys all along but no one knew about it. There are 2 life insurance policies totaling $500,000.00 plus what ever the stock is worth." The twins looked at each other and said, "Wow, we're rich." "Yes you are," I said smiling. "But Robert and I are going to set up a trust fund for you two and you won't be able to touch the money without our say so until you're 25." "Gee Dad," Jeremy said frowning. "Why 25?" "That's so you will be working somewhere and you can't blow it on just anything you happen to see," I said. "You won't have to worry about college, we will see to that. But we want you to be responsible when the trust is released to you." Aaron thought about that then said, "I guess that does make sense Dad. Even when we're adults you're still looking out for us." Robert kissed his cheek then said, "That's right. You'll always be our boys." It was getting late and the boys had school in the morning. "Shower time guys," I said. "Tomorrow is Friday." The twins got up and headed for the shower and Robert said, "TGIF." "For you maybe," I said. "But I have to work Saturday." "Damn," Robert said. "I thought we could have some fun tomorrow night." "Since when has me having to work ever stopped that before?" I asked. "Never," Robert said leering at me. "I want you to make mad passionate love to me." "Sounds promising," I said. "Now you better get your shower." Robert took a quick shower and shaved and came back out so we could hold the twins on our laps for a little bit before sending them off to bed. I could never imagine why Dad liked to hold us until I had Jeremy sit on my lap. Holding my son is something I never imagined I would ever do but I'm so glad they have come into our lives. To be continued.
