Miguel Sanchez The Pilot III Shane and Robert's Life Chapter 17 After everyone got hugged and kissed, we all went to bed. Robert and Aaron were the first into the bathroom and Jeremy was sitting patiently on my lap. When they came out we did our business then slid in between the sheets. Jeremy spooned himself back against my chest then pulled my arm over him. I kissed the back of his head then drifted off to sleep. I had been asleep for I don't know how long when the twins started tossing and Jeremy started saying "No Dad, NO! Mom." I sat up turning on the light and shook him gently saying, "Come on son, wake up." He opened his eyes and said, "Huh?" He saw me looking at him and he threw himself into my arms and started crying. I looked at Aaron and he was crying in Robert's arms as I said to Jeremy, "It was just a dream son." "It was so real Dad," he said. "Do you remember what was going on?" I asked. Aaron said, "We had just came out to them and Dad went to grab his belt and Mom came in. She warned him if he ever touched us she would have him arrested and then divorce him." Robert stroked Aaron's back and said, "You're safe now son. No one is going to hurt you." We laid there for about an hour then I turned the light off as I saw the boys were back asleep. "This is going to be a long day," I said softly to Robert. "I'm afraid you're right love," he said as I snuggled against Jeremy. I fell back asleep and managed several more hours of rest before the alarm woke us at 7. I woke a very groggy Jeremy. I helped him up and into the bathroom so he could pee then I turned on the shower. Jeremy stood there emptying his bladder then just stood there so I emptied mine then led him into the shower. I got him under the water hoping that would revive him. I shampooed his hair and got that rinsed then proceeded to wash his body. He just stood there so I lathered my hands and cleaned my boy. He would open his eyes and watch then move for me to access the next area. I kneeled down and got his legs and feet then he spread his legs so I could get his crotch and when I washed there, nothing happened. I got him rinsed and out of the shower when Robert came in and said, "Him too?" "Yeah," I said. "Is Aaron the same way?" He nodded his head then said, "Looks like I'm going to have to do everything for him." "I had to for Jeremy," I said. "I wonder if he will even manage to get dressed." Robert shrugged his shoulders and led Aaron into the bathroom as I led Jeremy out. I got a clean pair of briefs out of their dresser and handed them to him. He just stood there so I had to get a little firm with him. I lifted his chin and said, "I know this isn't going to be easy son, but there are some things you're just going to have to do for yourself. Now, I want you to get dressed. I'll get your suit pants for you and I want you to put them on." He leaned in and hugged me then slipped his briefs on. I went into the closet and found his suit pants then he put those on. We went out to the kitchen and Dad was fixing breakfast. Jeremy sat at the table while I helped Dad then Robert and Aaron joined us. Dad fixed the boys' plates and they started picking. Robert looked at Aaron and said, "You have to eat something son. Dad didn't give you a whole lot so I want that gone." The boys started eating slowly but they managed to clean their plates. Dad cleaned up the kitchen while Robert and I took the twins and finished getting them ready. We went into the closet and handed them their shirts and they put those on. The only thing we did have to do for them was help them with their ties. Robert and I just finished getting our suits on just as Dad hollered, "The limo is here guys. Get a move on." The four of us came out and Dad had to be Dad by fixing little things here and there. We walked out the front door just as Billy and John drove up. Billy rolled his window down and said, "We'll follow you to the funeral home." I had Robert get Jeremy into the limo as I walked over and talked with them briefly. "How are they?" John asked. I shook my head and said, "Like walking zombies. Robert and I had to get firm with them this morning because wouldn't do anything for themselves." Billy patted my hand and said, "Look bro, we're here if you need us." I smiled and said, "Thanks love, I may have to take you up on that offer. Hi boys, the twins will be glad you're here too. James, it looks like you have a little growth?" "Yeah, I do," James said smiling as he rubbed Joey's hair. "When are you heading back to school?" I asked. "I have to head back after the funeral," James said. "I was going back Friday but with the funeral today I wanted to be here for the twins and my little brothers." "Drive safe James," I said patting his hand. "And don't be a stranger. You have a new brother that is going to need your advice now." I got into the limo for the drive over to the funeral home. We all rode in silence as the boys leaned against us looking lost. I did remember to put several handkerchiefs into my pocket. I noticed Jeremy quietly crying so I reached and got out one and handed it to him. The car pulled up to the front door then the driver got out and opened the back door for us. Dad was the first out then we got the twins out. Mr. Warren met Dad and took him aside. He looked at him and said, "We went ahead and closed the caskets. We couldn't do very much with the mother because it looked like she had had an operation on her head." "I'm glad you did," Dad said. "That was something we forgot to talk about. I don't want the boys to have to remember their mother with a huge bandage on her head. Thank you." There were a couple of bouquets of flowers there that had been sent by John, Billy and his boys and one sent by Linda. There were name tags on the caskets so we knew who was who and the boys immediately headed for their mother. They just stood there holding hands as they ran their hand over the casket. Robert and I stayed back but were close enough if something happened and they needed us. It was almost 10 when we saw Linda come in. She walked up to the caskets and gave the boys a gentle kiss on the cheek and said something to them. I looked around and noticed that there were also some people that I assumed to be friends from the twins' old school and neighborhood. Robert and I led the boys to their seats as Mr. Warren and a minister came up. Mr. Warren thanked everyone for coming then the minister started speaking. Since no one really knew a lot about the boys' parents the service wasn't that involved. When the minister finished the service, we went outside so they could load the caskets for the trip to the cemetery. Once the cars were in place, we slowly drove to the cemetery again in silence. When we arrived, we waited in the limo while the caskets were brought over and placed on the stands. It had been prearranged that the father's casket would be brought over and lowered into the vault before the minister spoke for the mother. After the casket was lowered, they placed a piece of plywood over the hole and covered it with a green carpet. When they were ready, the driver opened the door and we exited the limo and took our seats beside her casket. When everyone was seated we heard Schubert's Ave Maria begin to play. The boys started crying as Aaron said, "That was her favorite song. How did you know?" Dad whispered, "I found it in their CD player at your house." When the song ended, the minister stood in front and said a couple of prayers then said, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, we now commit the body of Joan Mitchell to her final resting place." They started to lower her casket into the ground when the boys wailed, "NO MOM, PLEASE DON'T PUT HER IN THERE. PPLLEEAASSEE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Robert and I held them as they broke down crying. They stopped lowering the casket then the guests laid flowers on it before leaving as the boys continued to cry. We managed to help them regain their composure so they could each lay a flower on their mother's casket. Robert and I had our arms around their waists and we started to return to the limo when the boys passed out. We quickly scooped them up as Dad said, "They faint?" I nodded as Robert and I laid them on the ground when we got off the damp grass. We loosened their ties and unbuttoned the top button of their shirts. I gently patted Jeremy's face trying to revive him when Dad pulled two ammonia inhalants out of his pocket and handed them to Robert and me. I waited a few minutes to see if they would come around on their own but then I broke mine and passed it under Jeremy's nose. Robert then did the same with Aaron. The boys shook their heads and coughed opening their eyes. I smiled at Jeremy helping him sit up. He looked at me as the tears once again began to fall. Robert and I sat beside them and held them as they grieved. Dad kneeled beside us and I saw tears in his eyes as he said, "Let it out boys." I finally lost my strength and cried with Jeremy. I wiped my eyes and saw Robert was openly crying as he held Aaron. We must have sat there for a half hour and cried until there were no more tears left in us. I got up then helped the others to their feet and got into the limo. The driver took us home and when we pulled up, Billy and John had the house open for us. Dad thanked the driver and gave him a tip for being so patient with us. We walked quietly into the house and Robert and I took the twins into their room so they could get out of their suits. We got their jackets off when Jake came in and said, "I'll help them with that." Robert smiled at the teen and said, "Thanks Jake." We gave him a hug then went to our room and hung up our jackets. We quickly changed then went out to join the guests. Robert and I were so busy with the boys that we didn't notice there were a few teens in attendance. When the boys came back out, I saw them go over to them and speak quietly with them. I assumed they were some of their friends, both old and new. Linda ordered a few deli platters and Billy and John brought over some drinks so there was something to offer the guests. It was almost two when Linda said, "I hate to leave guys but I have to get back to the office." I hugged her and said, "Thanks for coming Linda. I want you to start doing what you have to so we can get the ball rolling on the adoption. They're going to need to see this so they have something to look forward too." "Alright," she said. "I found their grandparent's address in their school records so I have sent something out to them. I had to ask if there were any other relatives. As soon as that is back, I will let you know." Linda walked over to the twins and talked with him then she gave each a hug. She also stopped and talked with Jake then left to return to the office. James came up to us then and said he had to be getting on the road back to Gainesville. He gave all five of us big hugs and kisses and told us he'd see us soon. Then he walked outside with John, Billy and his brothers. By four everyone else had left. Billy and John were a huge help. I saw Dad with the twins in his arms when I said, "When did you give them the key to the house?" "At the funeral home," he said. Joey was a prince through out all this. He stood beside the twins and got them soda to sip on. I saw him fix them a little sandwich and they shook their head no but he pushed the plate at them. That ate the little roll and Joey smiled and mouthed "thank you" to them. Joey was standing there watching the boys when I came over and picked him up saying, "You were such a good friend today. I don't know what they would have done without you." Joey looked over at them and said, "They needed me Uncle Shane." "I know they did little man," I said. "I'm so glad you were here for them. You know they are going to need you in the days to come too, don't you." "Un huh," he said. "I'll be here anytime." I saw the three boys looking at each other when Aaron came over and took him out of my arms. I saw him wrap his arms around the little boy and just hold onto him. Jeremy eased over and wrapped his arms around the pair and all three of them started to softly cry. Dad had to wipe his eyes and suddenly a wave of grief hit me. I ran over to him and fell into his arms crying uncontrollably. Robert came over and helped him hold onto me as I said, "Why does life have to suck so much?" Robert started wiping my tears away and said, "I really wish I had an answer for that baby. It seems that so much bad happens to only good people." Dad kissed my cheek and said, "I know today brought back a lot of sad memories for you too son. I've been worried about you all day." I fell against him again crying as I said, "I tired to be strong for them Daddy." "I know you did son," he said softly. The next thing I knew Joey was in my arms saying, "Why are you crying Uncle Shane?" Robert looked at him and said, "Uncle Shane is sad because this reminded him of when his parents died." Joey picked my chin up and said, "Don't worry Uncle Shane, I'll be here for you too." I kissed his cheek and said, "Thank you Joey. I love you." He wrapped me in a tight hug and said, "I love you too." I cried myself out and got myself something to drink because my throat was like a desert. I noticed that the house was straight and I found Billy and John busy in the kitchen. I went over and hugged them both, "What would we have done without you guys? You've been a real life saver today." John kissed me and said, "You're family baby. Of course we would be here. You were a life saver to me once and I've never forgot that. Are you hungry?" I was starving. I looked around and Billy said, "Go sit down and we'll fix you something." They brought me some sandwiches and potato salad. I scarfed that down then went to check on the twins. They were sitting on the couch surrounded by Jake and Joey. They were talking quietly and once in a while I would see them all laugh about something. I looked out the window and it was now getting dark. I looked at my watch and it was 6:30. Where had this day gone? I was drained both physically and emotionally. Dad was sitting talking with John and Billy as I felt my lover's arms wrap around me. He kissed my gently on the lips and asked, "You OK sweetness?" I smiled at him and said, "Yeah. Then I fell into his arms and started crying again. "I'm so sorry love," I said. "I've abandoned you today." He wiped my face and said, "No you didn't. You had your past came back today and it finally got to you. I'm so sorry I didn't see it coming. I feel I left you." He held me while I cried again. I then felt a pair of arms around me and a voice say, "What's wrong Dad?" I just smiled and said, "Long day, son." Aaron whispered into my ear and asked, "Are you remembering you parents?" I nodded my head and said, "Yeah son, I am. I thought that was behind me but I guess I never really let them go." They all led me over to the couch and I sat with Robert on one side of me and Jeremy on the other. They all held me and then people were hugging me and giving me kisses. I must have nodded off briefly because John, Billy and his two had left. I looked at the clock and it was now after 8. The twins were snuggled against Robert and me and they too looked exhausted. Dad was snoozing in his new recliner so I eased out from under Jeremy and woke him up, "Why don't you go to bed Dad. I'm going to get the others up and do the same thing." He stood up and kissed me, "Good idea son. We've all had a long day." I woke Robert and he got Aaron up while I did the same to Jeremy. Robert helped the twins into our room while I turned off the lights and made sure the doors were locked. I saw Jeremy just sitting on the bed fighting to stay awake so I quickly stripped and used the bathroom. I came out and saw Robert getting Aaron undressed as I got Jeremy's tee shirt off. I helped him to his feet then I removed his shorts and briefs. I saw the twins stagger into the bathroom and use the toilet then they came out and got into bed forgoing brushing their teeth. I hopped in then had my twin against me. Robert turned the light off and I quickly fell asleep. I was so exhausted I didn't feel Robert or Aaron move when they got up. Jeremy was still snuggled against me sound asleep. I looked at the clock and it was after 10 in the morning. I laid there a minute trying to finish waking up when my bladder reminded me it was wide awake. I lifted Jeremy's arm off me and slid off the bed and beat feet to the toilet. I quickly relieved myself and went back into the bedroom. I looked at Jeremy just as his eyes flittered open. I sat beside him and said, "Hi son. Feel better?" "A little," he said reaching his arms out for me. I helped him into a sitting position and hugged him. "Did you at least sleep well?" I asked. "Just like a baby," he said as he started wiggling. I moved out of his way as he quickly got up and ran into the bathroom. He flushed the toilet then brushed his teeth before coming back into the bedroom. He wrapped his arms around me and softly said, "God Dad, I really miss Mom." "I know you do tiger," I said. "This is just the first day. It's going to take time but it will get easier." "How do you do it?" he said softly. "One day at a time," I said kissing him gently on the lips. "Alright," he said. We put our underwear on then went out to the kitchen to greet the others. Robert was the first to see us and he said, "Hi baby. Did you two sleep well?" Jeremy smiled and said, "I slept like a baby. What time did you get us into bed last night?" I poured a cup of coffee and said, "It was sometime after 8." "Oh," he said fixing himself some cereal. "Hey, what about school?" "We didn't think you'd be up to going today considering everything that happened yesterday," I said. "But I think you can go back tomorrow though." Aaron looked at Jeremy and then at Robert asking, "Can we go back to the cemetery?" I looked at Dad for his guidance. He nodded to us, "I guess so son. You really weren't able to say good bye to her yesterday." Jeremy looked at me and asked, "Dad, are you still going to adopt me?" Aaron was looking at Robert when Jeremy spoke then I said, "Of course we are son. I talked with Linda yesterday before she left and she is already working on it." He smiled at me and said, "Thanks. I still thought you were but I guess I needed to hear it." "Not a problem," I said kissing his head. After I had my coffee and Jeremy filled his stomach we went back to the cemetery. We had a little problem finding the plots but we finally did. We got out and stood back as the twins slowly walked over to the graves. They held onto each other then I heard Aaron say, "Father, you never cared for us. For 12 years we were your sons. We did everything together but that all changed when Jeremy and I figured out who we were. You couldn't accept that or even try to understand it. You even tried to beat us but Mom stopped you. After that you never loved us. Well, you made your choice and you're where you belong, IN HELL. I hope you suffer like you made us suffer by turning your back on us. We always hoped you would come around but you never did. Again, that was your choice. We each have a real DAD now that loves us for who we are. You could have had that but you chose not to. Good bye forever." They stood there for a few minutes then Jeremy said, "Hi Mom we're doing OK but boy do we sure miss you. I know we never said this enough but thanks for all you did keeping father from trying to hurt us. We never told you enough how much we love you either but you always seemed to know that. Mom, I wish you could meet our new Dads, you would really love them. They are so cool and they're even like us but I guess you know that already. They're going to adopt us too. Hope you don't mind that but that's something Aaron and I really want. I hope you're resting peacefully. We love you mom and we will come out to visit you all the time. We need to go now. Bye Mom, we love you." I could see them wipe their faces then they turned and motioned for us to come over. We walked over and Aaron said, "Mom, this is my new Dad Robert and this is Jeremy's Dad Shane. This other man is Shane and Robert's Dad Buck. We call him Granddad. I know we still have one but we just don't remember him. I hope you like them. Well, we gotta go but we'll be back soon. Bye Mom, we love you." I had to wipe my face as Jeremy leaned his head on my shoulder. I looked at him, "Are you alright, son?" He smiled at me, "I'm fine now Dad. I think she's really happy for us." I kissed his cheek, "I think she is too, son." We left the cemetery and Aaron asked, "Dad, can we stop and get lunch somewhere?" I'm really hungry." To be continued
