When she found out that I was tutoring James, she asked if I could help Kevin with his social studies homework one day over coffee. "You know my son, Kevin, right?" she asked casually. "He really could use some help with social studies. He just doesn't get it, and I'm no help to him." Of course I knew Kevin. He was a really cool kid. I had met him a few times before when he would come with his mom and Cindy when we'd all meet for coffee. "I wouldn't mind at all. Glad I can help." I replied. We decided that she would just bring him to the Starbucks where we normally met for coffee, and we would have an hour-long tutoring session once a week. Saturday came around and in walked Kevin. I asked where his mom was, and he said that she had errands to run, so she just dropped him off. He looked stunning. I never really thought about Kevin sexually before, but there he was in a pair of jeans that fit him well. They weren't skinny jeans, but not baggy, either. He had on a regular polo-style shirt, and I could clearly see that he was in shape. He was 15 years old, and had no acne, and a perfectly coiffed mini pompadour hairstyle. He was a very attractive young man. "Want some coffee, Kevin?" I asked as he put his backpack down at the table. "Yeah, but I can get it; my mom gave me some money for it." he replied with a smile--proud that he could get it for himself, and not rely on someone else. He returned a few minutes later with his mocha and got out his book. For the next hour, we talked about Ancient Greece, which neither of us found overly amusing. I tried to make it fun, and showed him maps online about where we were talking, and even told stories about toga parties that I had when I was in college, since everyone seems to relate togas with ancient Greece and Rome. Kevin thought the toga stories were hilarious and said, "Wait, Josh, so you and your friends just hung out in sheets, drinking all night? That sounds awesome!" I couldn't help but laugh. I told him that when he goes to college, I'm sure he'd have plenty of adventures of his own. He said that he would love to see Greece someday, and I said that I love to travel, but have never been there either. I told him that I was going to Chicago the next weekend, but Illinois was nothing like going to Greece. He said that he had never even left the state, so he was jealous. After the hour, Susan walked in and joined us. She asked Kevin how things went, and he talked about Socrates and the island of Crete. She feigned interest, and thanked me again. I told her that we had a good time, and that I had no problems with Kevin. Susan then asked if we could do this every week at the same time, and I said that would be fine with me, but I would be out of town the next weekend. I joked with, "Unless Kevin wants to come to Chicago, I'll have to cancel for next week." Susan and I both laughed, but Kevin didn't know what was so funny. "Oh, mom, can I go with Josh? That would be so awesome to see Chicago!" Susan said, "Kevin, I'm sure a grown man doesn't want a teenager cramping his style while he's on vacation." Then she asked, "Is Amanda going with you?" I told her that Amanda and I had broken up, but it was fine. It was amicable. Then I said, "I'm not going on vacation, I just need to get away for the weekend, and take a break from normal life, you know?" After some more idle chatter, we decided that it was time to go, so Susan and I gave each other a hug, and said good-bye, and then Kevin came over and gave me a hug. He thanked me for helping him. I don't recall ever hugging Kevin before, but I enjoyed it. Later that week, on Wednesday, I ran into Susan and Kevin at Starbucks when I was getting some work done. Kevin asked if I was all ready for my trip to Chicago, and I told him that I was driving out, not flying, so aside from booking a hotel, I didn't really have much prepping to do. Once again, he asked his mom if he could go to Chicago. She gave me an awkward look, and then asked Kevin to give us a few minutes alone. Susan sighed and said, "Josh, he hasn't stopped talking about travelling, seeing Greece, going to Chicago, or just getting away. He's never even left this city before. Ever since Jack died, it's just been the two of us, so we haven't had any time or money for vacations. I don't want to impose, but it really would mean the world to him if you could take him along." How could I say no to that? I said that it would be my pleasure. Once Kevin came back, we told him that I would pick him up on Friday after school, and he'd be spending the weekend in Chicago. He couldn't have been happier, and I was wondering what I was getting myself into. ________________ Please feel free to give your comments.
