Before I could answer I heard a floor board creak, I looked at the door, Mark was standing looking at us, I glanced back to Montfort. `You two had better sort this thing between you out. Mark knows all about the book; as much as Joseph did. Mark and I have been discussing it this morning.' `I can get it' I said. I was wishing I had been present at that chat as I walked towards the door, Mark stepped into the room, nodding as I went past him, I kept my mind blocked, it wouldn't have helped proceedings if he could read what I was thinking. Having retrieved the book from my safe, I returned to the Great Hall, Montfort was at the main table seated in one of the dining carvers, Mark standing alongside him, they were both laughing; how could Montfort be so friendly. `Ah Jonathon, have you had a chance to read any of the book yet? `No, Montfort' I kept my face emotionless. `Okay, you had better pull up a chair and listen in, I think we are all in for a bit of a history lesson.' I handed Montfort the book and took a seat on the other side of him to Mark. Montfort, carefully opened the book and turned the first page. `Fascinating, this isn't paper, it is written on human skin' Montfort exclaimed. `I thought it was supposed to be an ancient book? Not made in one of the camps' Mark stated He peered closely at the book, I glared at him, I was about to have a go at him, when Montfort started speaking. `It was not made in one of the camps, this book is several hundred years old, Joseph, did however acquire it in one of the camps, it was given to him by an old man; the senior Romanian Rabbi, who insisted that he take good care of it, Joseph always said he thought the old man knew what he was.' Montfort, began skimming the ancient hand written words, occasionally stopping to think, before returning to the text. `It is a history of the hatred and final war between the Vampyre's and the Werewolves and...the aftermath.' As Mark and I sat and listened, Montfort, relayed the story of how, the `Neck Feeder' Vampyre's; we didn't appear to be mentioned and the Werewolves, had hunted each other, ravaging the medieval countryside of Europe, before coming together for the final battle in the wild, rolling Romanian forests. The book told how the final surviving female Werewolf, Markella, critically injured had dragged herself off the battle field and had hidden in a cave, there she had given birth to a boy child, this last act, ending her life. The child had been discovered by a Jewish woodcutter, who had taken it to the local Rabbi, he had taken the boy in, it was the Rabbi who had written the book. `It says he was a Vampyre Werewolf hybrid; like you Mark' Montfort, grinned looking at both of us. `That must be why he didn't harm the child' Montfort said thinking out loud. `But that would mean, he could still be alive? I blurted out `Exactly' Montfort looked a bit too happy for my liking. `How do we find him? Mark seemed more interested now, leaning across the table, his eyes focused on the book. `But, why would he have surrendered the book, if he was going to survive and escape the camp? He obviously knew he wasn't going to die.' My mind was racing, my lips expressing my thoughts. `Only one person will be able to explain that' Montfort said, closely studying the next page of the book. Montfort read on, explaining that when the child was eighteen, the Rabbi had conducted a ceremony on the child to supress the Werewolf gene. `What kind of ceremony?' Mark looked at Montfort `It doesn't say, but if, as I think, you are the direct descendant of that child of Markella, it suppressed the gene until, Jonathon and you, err' Montfort's voice trailed off, Mark glared at me momentarily and then broke into a smirk, I looked back emotionless. Montfort glanced up at both of us before continuing, the Rabbi, had then sent him off into the world to find his own way, never revealing the story of his birth or what or who he was. `But how could the Rabbi have known that, Joseph would eventually meet up with Mark and find out what Mark was? It was a hell of a long shot, to leave it to chance' There I went, thinking out loud again. I knew I had jumped forward, through history, but..., Montfort nodded, but said nothing, it was indeed a mystery. `Does the book tell, how the Rabbi became a Vampyre Werewolf hybrid? Mark was staring at Montfort again. `No nothing' Montfort shook his head. `So this person could, no must still be alive?' I gasped. `Logic would make you think that, what's more he must now be able to sense you Mark; if he could see and predict what was going to happen, he must be very powerful too' I glanced at Mark as Montfort finished speaking, he was silently nodding. `Mark!' The door banged open as Zeke ran into the room and straight to Mark; that hurt. `Morning Jonathon, morning Montfort, Sir' Zeke added `What are you all up too? Wow look at that old book, what is it made of? It looks like funny paper.' `Hello Master Zeke' Montfort reached out and flattened Zeke's hair, `this is a very old book and it is made of human skin' he said in a creepy story teller way. `Human skin! But why? `Ah that we don't know. Mark, why don't you take Zeke out and tell him all the news.' Mark nodded and with his arm firmly wrapped round Zeke, they walked towards the door, I watched as they stopped, Mark whispering something in Zeke's ear. Zeke broke away and ran over to me and gave me a big hug. `Love you' he said, kissing my cheek, before turning and running off after Mark. How my little charge had changed since that first meeting in the park toilets, I sensed Montfort watching me `You have done a great job with that young man Jonathon, you should be very proud'. Montfort closed the book. `But, it is obvious, he is very fond of Mark and I sense no danger or ill will towards him from Mark. But from you I sense a burning hatred of Mark, you must deal with that or risk losing them both.' I knew Montfort was correct, but I was still too raw. Montfort got called away urgently, later that day, promising to stay in touch, I waved him and Connor goodbye, I went back into the house, I had better speak with Mark and Zeke. I eventually found them in the garden; Casper, ever vigilant standing a few feet away, I opened the French doors and joined them. `I don't want another fight Jonathon, if you have come to start on me again.' I was a bit taken aback. `No Mark, exactly the opposite, I want to talk to you both.' I could sense, Mark doubted this, but followed him as he led us all to one of the stone table and chairs in the garden; the three dogs all sitting together watching us. `We need to talk about a couple of things, firstly, does Zeke and you for that matter still want Ian as his familiar; if yes, I think there is still one more session to go for final conversion. Secondly we really do need to think about getting him a tutor, getting him a good education really is important' I was aware I sounded a bit official, and tried to smile as I spoke. `Oh Jonathon' Zeke slumped in his chair. Mark leaned over and ruffled Zeke's hair. `Zeke, take Casper and go for a run, while Jonathon and I talk.' `But' Zeke barely got the word out before, Mark held up his hand to stop him, Zeke made a big show of dragging himself out of the chair, he called Casper over and headed off with him back into the house. Mark looked at me intently before speaking. `Jonathon, please I want to try and rebuild our friendship once more, I realise I have hurt you, but, I never asked for any of this remember, a few months ago I was a Junior Officer on a cross Channel Ferry, next, I am having sex with two strangers, one of whom nearly kills me. I end up in some strange hospital, there, I am suspected of being a Werewolf and studied like a lab rat, by someone who just happens to be a Vampyre and one of the worst known Nazi Concentration Camp Doctors. Then I am converted by a child Vampyre who didn't know I was in fact a dormant Werewolf; so I could be like them. However that didn't quite work and I turn into a super being, with powers I am still coming to terms with. I was; I am frightened of what I have become, of the powers that I now have. I sensed Joseph's distrust of me and feared he would kill me, the rest you know. I love and adore Zeke, you must be able to sense that, I will never hurt him and do not want to leave him, however, now I know, that somewhere there is another being like me, I must find them, so, I intend to leave tonight, I will get Zeke to finish the ceremony with Ian later and I will be gone before the morning, please look after Zeke, tell him how much I love him and that, that is why I couldn't face saying goodbye in person.' Mark's eyes studied me again, I think my mouth hanging open and the look of surprise on my face gave away that I was totally gobsmacked, I hadn't seen any of this coming. `But, Mark' I began, He held up his hand to stop me. `Jonathon, you know I must do this, please do not make it any more difficult than it already is' I nodded my acceptance `Mark, I will of course make sure you have funds available to allow you to be very comfortable while you search, can I ask, will you come back? I know someone will want to know, I need to offer him some hope for the future' Mark nodded adding quietly `Thank you Jonathon, yes, I will be back, I will try to stay in touch with you also' We sat in silence, nothing more needing to be said, as I sat staring at the setting sun, contemplating the coming days. I felt Mark grip my hand, I glanced at him and smiled, he enter my mind, he was genuinely upset `Please let Zeke know how much I love him, look after him for me and keep him safe' Mark left my mind, leaving the words `thank you' as out last communication. I watched as Mark got up from the table, I could sense his turmoil as he walked off round the garden. Had I misjudged him? Time would tell, but he was right, we Vampyre's had turned his life upside down, giving him no choice in his future, nor could we give him the answers he sought, he had to follow his own path. I kept out of the way that night, I wanted them to have all the time they could together, Mark was true to his word and had Zeke complete the `familiar ceremony' with Ian. I found out the next morning from Ian, the three of them had all cuddled up and fallen asleep together, when Ian had woken, Mark had gone, Zeke he told me, was still sleeping. Pyotr had woken me as usual and told me that he had given the envelopes and `skin' book to Mark as I had requested before he had left. I sat in the kitchen, dreading the next few hours, I made sure Ian stayed close, I knew he would be needed, what a coward I really was. I was absently staring out of the window at the rain, I noticed Zoltan's head move as he look up at the door, his tail wagged as Casper came into the room, followed by Zeke, bare chested, wearing a pair of Ian's white baggy shorts; he had tied the excess waist material into a untidy knot, his juvenile bare feet making hardly a sound on the tiles, his hair, ruffled and sticking up in different directions, he yawned, rubbing sleep from his eyes, a big smile on his face. `Morning' he yawned. ***************** Guys, it's always great to hear by email that you are enjoying the story and want it to carry on.
