This case had become a bit of an obsession since it turned out to involve potential reincarnation. The traffic on the way to Chicago was horrendous as I navigated the complex maze of expressways. Ace had reserved a hotel near O'Hare airport where we were supposed to meet. Pulling into the parking lot, I developed a severe headache along with a sense of nausea. The pain radiated from the nape of my neck up through the space between my eyes. It had been several weeks since I experienced one of there that was so intense and focused. My stomach was beginning to churn and I was afraid I would lose my dinner. Stepping out into the cool night air, I caught a flash of a large floating black mass just above the roof of the auto. Suddenly the world started spinning and the last thing I heard was Ace calling my name before I lost consciousness. WESTBRIDGE SPIRIT: CHAPTER TWENTY (20) PHILLIP Just as Richard and I crawled into bed, the phone rang and I answered it to find Ace on the line in a state of panic. After getting him to calm down and putting him on speaker, he explained that he was getting together with Conrad to discuss the cleaners. They were meeting at his hotel near O'Hare airport when he saw Conrad's car pull in the lot. Going out to greet him, he witnessed a sight he had not seen in all his years of psychic investigations. An enormous, swirling black mass was hovering over the car as Conrad stood next to it frozen and trembling in fear. Running towards the frightened man, he watched him teeter and collapse. Managing to catch him before he hit his head, Ace made every attempt to rouse him as he phoned for an ambulance. He was calling from the hospital emergency room asking one of us to come saying Conrad was babbling about something and asked for us. We got dressed and let Frank know where we were going before leaving the house. The ride took far less time than it appeared and soon we arrived at the hospital. Rushing into he ER, Ace met us and introduced a Dr. Ian Kensington, who was treating Conrad. Explaining who we were, he told us that the preliminary exam indicated a panic attack along with severe gastro-intestinal distress. When pressed about the raving discussion, he suspected it was a hallucination suffered while unconscious. Ian then informed us that he was being admitted but had been given some medication to calm him. We were allowed to see him in his assigned room but only for a moment or two. Once we were alone, Conrad grabbed my hand and explained that the vision he saw warned him that anyone associated with the manor would be in danger. A woman's voice filled his head with dire predictions for our future at the estate. He believed that it might have been Elizabeth who was stalking us since the spirit seemed to think they were the only one entitled to the house and grounds. The worst part for him was the suggestion that his son's death had been meant to prevent him from becoming involved with this situation. I worried that he might cracking up until he mentioned a book that I had brought home for genealogical research. Suggesting a particular page to examine, we decided to leave when he started yawning and closing his eyes. Leaving him to rest, Ace, Richard, and I headed out promising to meet the next morning. Returning home, something seemed different as we walked towards the door. Just as he unlocked the deadbolt, I felt a cold grip on my shoulder. Turning to see what was behind me, I confronted the coalescing black form of a woman who reached out her gnarled hands to me. Before I could even think of how to react, it lunged forward and I collapsed in a screaming heap. Richard was kneeling over me with concern in his eyes as he cleaned my forehead where I struck it on the stairs. The door opened revealing Frank and Patrick staring down at us. Helping Richard to get me into the living room, Walter rushed in with a first aid kit while Oliver prepared some hot tea to relax me. My vision was blurry and my head was spinning as I lay there being treated by my family. I found myself drifting into a dream state taking me back, once again, to London. Edwin was attempting to comfort his employer and lover over the sudden death of his wife Sarah. She and Geoffrey had married to cover their homosexuality and disguise their relationships. Abigail, her secret love, had to be sedated by a physician after learning of her mistress' death. The children were being tended by other staff members who were instructed to not explain where their mother was. Geoffrey and Edwin planned to let them know tomorrow after the initial shock had worn off. For the moment, the valet simply prepped his companion for rest and crawled into bed after given final instructions to the rest of the staff. A young chamber maid had been assigned to watch over Abigail and report any disturbance immediately. As the two men slid closer to each other, I woke finding myself in Richard's embrace. Looking out the window and knowing it was still night, I pushed my body even closer and fell back into a deep sleep. CONRAD I found myself walking in a forest of all sequoia trees following a small blue orb as it wound through the trunks. Never having been afraid of anything, I wondered if this was the end and I was being led to my own demise. Sounds were muffled, although I thought I heard Ace calling to me. My steps were effortless until I glanced down to see that I was actually several inches off the ground. As this trek continued, patches of light broke the thick canopy of branches and highlighted unusual formations of rocks, mosses, and ferns. Several "fairy circles" formed a larger ring with a large outcropping of granite in the very center. As the orb circled and ascended the monolith, I lifted my gaze until I saw a figure perched on the top of the rock. Approaching the base, the apparition floated silently to the ground and stood in front of me. The glare of the sun subsided and I found myself face-to-face with my late son, Sebastian. My mind began hearing his voice telling me that we will find the answer in the Lost Chamber. Before I could ask what that meant, I woke finding myself in a hospital room attached to all types of monitors. I needed to reach Ace and our cleaners to see if they had any idea what that cryptic phrase could suggest. We also needed to discuss this vision with Phillip and Maybrook to see if there was anything about the house that might lead us to a solution. PATRICK Seeing my adoptive father, Phillip, lying on the porch unconscious sent wave of terror and panic through every cell of my body. Frank helped Richard to carry him to the living room couch to tend to his wounds. As Walter helped, I stood in the corner and shook until Frank came over to take me in his protective arms. I laid my head in his shoulder and started to weep softly as he stroked my back. Several minutes later, Phillip was sitting up, sipping tea, and trying to comfort me as well. Thank God the younger boys had not been roused for they would have flipped out even more. Collin came down to make sure everything was fine before returning to watch over my brothers. Our doctor came immediately to examine Phillip and determined that it was probably due to exhaustion combined with slightly low blood sugar. He encouraged us to bring him some sugar cookies and another cup of tea with extra honey. Oliver chuckled and brought out an entire tea service with cookies, sandwiches, and proper tea. I sat around with my family laughing and exchanging stories from their childhoods. Given that I had been badly abused by my father, I kept quiet since nobody knew about my suffering. My dad never attacked me in such a way as to leave over markings. Since I attended a private school courtesy of Aunt Marie, there was no physical education class to allow anyone see the few bruises I dad have. Hearing how Phillip had been spoiled by his uncles and Richard had his big brother made me sad. Even Frank had friends that were extremely close and behaved more like family. Turning from the group, I suddenly felt tears flood my eyes and stream down my face. Frank came over to find out what was bothering me and held me until I stopped crying. By now, everyone had shifted their focus to us as I took a deep breath. PATRICK'S NIGHTMARE Starting at the beginning, I recalled how when my brother, Zach, was five, he came into my room crying and bleeding. Being two years younger, all I could do was hold him and let him weep. As we grew, these nightly visits became more ominous until one evening when I was about 10 years old. Zach came in as usual and warned me that I should never let Dad into the bathroom when I was bathing. Knowing nothing about sex, he explained what our father had done to him, advising me to hide whenever possible. For about six months, I managed to avoid being alone with my father until the night Zach was having an operation for a collapsed lung from a "skating accident." Mom stayed at the hospital with him, leaving me and Dad at home. About 8pm that evening, Mom called to update us about Zach's condition and wish us sweet dreams. My father walked into my room in nothing but a pair of white jockey underwear. I had never seen him out of regular clothing before and immediately remembered what Zach had told me. As I huddled in the corner of my room, he walked over to me. Grabbing me by the arm, he pulled me over to my bed ripping my shorts off as we went. Pushing me down on my stomach, I felt him bury his face between my cheeks and begin licking me. I started to cry and shift until he swatted me telling me to be quiet. When he felt I was wet enough, he climbed on top and pleasured himself with my ass. The entire experience lasted only a minute or two but left scars I still feel to this day. That turned out to be the only time he attacked me sexually. Shortly thereafter, Zach came home. Once my brother found out what he had done, he beat Dad until he swore I would never be touched again. That solution only worked because my father made my brother promise to satisfy his desires instead. About 18 months later, the car accident occurred and my father sank into alcoholism and forgot about sex. He was too busy mourning Zach to focus on me anymore. Finally, my father passed away and I buried those feelings deep inside to avoid experiencing the hurt. When I was finished with my sordid tale, Phillip and Richard took me in their arms to assure me that I would never experience anything like that ever again. Frank was crying and swearing that he loved me completely and would protect me with his life. My uncles, Walter and Oliver, informed us that I was going to start counseling with the family to help me deal with what I had experienced. All the love in the room gave me my first real sense of family since Zach had died. Mom had never been happy as I was kind of an "oops" baby, unplanned and unexpected. She suffered post-partum for years until she "found God" through a friend in her support group. Dad was too twisted to be a parent to any degree and Zach was always trying to protect me from them both. Here with people who were basically strangers, I felt more like a part of a family than I had ever experienced. By this point, the sun was starting to rise, but I wasn't feeling up to school so Frank escorted me to our room while Phillip called me off due to illness. Crawling into bed with a man who loved me completely, I drifted into a relaxed sleep knowing that I really was safe and secure. FRANK After hearing the way my young love had suffered, I was so angry that I wished his father was around to confront in person. Patrick had such a sweet, loving heart that I couldn't imagine ever treating him like he didn't matter. My own home life had been anything but peaceful due to my own father. He drank and smoked weed but luckily was rarely home. Mom had long ago bugged out once she discovered her true inner self, which turned out to be a lesbian with an attraction to strippers. She and her new wife were living in Las Vegas where she worked as a bar manager while the wife performed. I had never been beaten just ignored so I learned early how to take care of myself. In elementary school, I learned to cook, do laundry, and clean the house. By the time I was thirteen, I earned extra money from baby sitting and decorating cakes. Keeping my grades up and managing to still do some activities enabled me to receive enough scholarship and grant money to afford college with minimal loans. Finding the job working for Phillip and Richard was a blessing as well as extra income. Not only did I earn some spending cash but I found someone that I felt I could build a life. These recent attacks and paranormal events have really angered me as well as terrified me. We were trying to discover what was happening but people were suffering. Poor Maybrook lost the love that he had waited years to have. The entire family did everything to help him recover but I could see how shattered he was. My own dreams had been invaded with images of London and the manor from when it was first constructed. They weren't complete stories but just brief flashes of events that didn't help to understand what was occurring. Ace and Conrad had been trying to help but now one of those men had been attacked. What if he decides not to continue then what do we do? ACE Seeing the black mass and watching Conrad collapse frightened me more than anything I have ever experienced in my life. This phantasm physically attacked someone causing actual injuries other than just fear. Hearing my mentor babble about how it was all related to his son's death confused me even more since that happened years before this case ever developed. I knew Zach and felt he was a well-trained investigator not known for taking unnecessary chances. That realization made his death so puzzling since it occurred during a case setup. He was linking remote cameras to the main computer in a particularly disturbing house. The Kelvin Estate and family was being persecuted and ravaged by what seemed to be several poltergeists. Neil Kelvin had built the house in the late 19th Century with his fortune made from military profits during the Spanish-American War. His firm had apparently been selling all types of armaments to both sides of the conflict. Some of the evidence from the case led Conrad to believe that spirits who felt betrayed by him were wrecking havoc with his descendants. As Zach was attaching some electrical cables to the cameras, a sudden flood of water formed in the hallway and caused a catastrophic electrical short that killed him. The post-incident investigation could uncover no logical cause for the accident and ruled the death suspicious. They even blamed Conrad and the Kelvin family for causing it due to a bout of hysteria. PHILLIP The next afternoon, Richard, Ace and I met with Conrad in the hospital again. He mentioned his vision of his son and the talk of a Lost Chamber. We wondered if there might be some room we haven't explored at the manor. Maybrook had been working there for almost thirty years and could possibly know of such a space. I also agreed to obtain blueprints and land surveys of the house and grounds to see if there were any discrepancies in the square footage. Given that the estate had been constructed in stages over decades made it plausible for secret tunnels or rooms to be present. It could also have been an area cut off newer building that left a partial void behind. Conrad was being released the next day pending the final test results, so we made arrangements for he and I to fly to New York to obtain the needed documents. Leaving the hospital, I received a call from Collin indicating that Campbell had fallen in the shower and was at the ER. Richard immediately drove to where he was being treated, while Ace asked a series of questions. Because I hadn't been given all the details, all I could do was shrug until we arrived there. Pulling into the parking lot, I was out of the car before it completely stopped. As I walked in the ER, a nurse took my name and escorted Richard and I back to where our son was. Coming around the curtain, Collin came over and let us know that Campbell was sleeping having been given a slight sedative. After checking on him briefly, the three of us went out to talk with Ace. Collin explained that Campbell was taking a shower while he was helping Kyle with his hair. The bathroom lights flickered and the two turned to see a black hand push the younger boy against the wall causing him to fall. Given this latest incident, almost every member of my family had been attacked in one way or another. I was angry and ready for it to be over. A nurse came our to let us know that Campbell wanted to see his fathers so Collin waited with Ace while we went back. TO BE CONTINUED...
