He read on, `Both the Chaldeans and the Seleucids, throughout their history, the Greeks of the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD, and the Chinese from the 2nd Century BC through 200 AD, used the sedile consistently on their crucified victims. In contrast, the Romans, the people most associated with the practice of crucifixion as an extreme form of punishment in Western culture, seemed to have rarely, if ever, used the sedile.' `The lack of traumatic injury to the forearm and metacarpals of the hand seems to suggest that the arms of the crucified were tied rather than nailed to the cross beam, with the major load bearing component of the cross being the sedile or chair or saddle. There is ample literary and artistic evidence for the use of ropes rather than nails to secure the condemned to the cross, along with the sedile.' Spencer closed the book, and then closed his eyes. He was sweating. He wondered what was going on. Why was he fascinated with such a hideous subject? His father surprised him, as he often did, by opening the door to his office and entering without knocking. Spencer quickly collected himself, slipped the book into his desk drawer, smoothed his slicked hair with his hand, and exclaimed, "Dad!" His father, Dr. Elliot Collins, didn't notice his son's agitation, "Spencer, get yourself ready! Remember we have to be at the Fuller residence in an hour. This could be a most lucrative intervention!" *** As the guests started arriving for a Sunday afternoon family gathering in late October, Darrin Fuller, 19, didn't think anything was unusual, except for the fact that none of his relatives brought their children along. Aside from that, it looked to Darrin as though his father had decided to invite only his male cousins and uncles. Darrin figured it was probably going to be a guy kind of gathering: do some barbecuing and watch a football game on TV. That made the two youngest people present at the gathering Darrin's two brothers, Brett, 18, and Mitchell, 15. What was unusual, however, was the arrival of Dr. Elliott Collins of the Rosewood Heights Holistic Reform Center, and his two sons, Spencer, 25, and Camden, 19. Dr. Collins was well known to the residents of Springfield, Massachusetts, from his frequent television ads that featured him and his two handsome sons. What made Dr. Collins and his Rosewood Heights Holistic Reform Center commercials memorable to the residents of the very liberal state of Massachusetts was the fact that his clinic promised to offer `cures' for such things as homosexuality, gambling, and porn addiction, things that the majority residents of the Northeastern end of the United States would hardly think of as needing a cure. The Rosewood Heights Holistic Reform Center was a financial success because it claimed that their successful rate of curing such ailments was based on pure science. Thus the Reform Center appealed to those residents of the area who were uncomfortable with such things as homosexuality, gambling, and pornography, not from a religious perspective, but from a cultural perspective. Since Rosewood Heights was the only non-religious affiliated counseling and reform treatment being offered on the Eastern Seaboard for such `problems', Rosewood's counseling and treatment programs were never short of applicants. Even though Darrin found the very concept of treatment centers such as Rosewood Heights detestable, he didn't mind at all the presence of Dr. Collin's two sons, Spencer, who specialized in addiction and `identity' counseling, and Camden, 19, who was currently a sophomore in college majoring in psychology. Both sons appeared with their father in the Rosewood Heights' commercials to show that Rosewood Heights was a `family' oriented and benign treatment center. Both sons were, in Darrin's eyes, fuck-ass gorgeous studs, far better than anything in his computer's porn collection, and their smiling, well-groomed, appearance in the commercials provided Darrin with plenty of jackoff support through the years. What especially surprised Darrin was the arrival of his two best friends from the local community college that he attended; Pierce and David. He was happy to see them, but had thought this gathering was just a family event. Darrin hit both of his friends on the shoulder, and said, "Let me grab you guys a beer!" But Darrin was taken aback by the sudden reaction of both of his friends, who held up their hands and said, "Oh no, please. Not right now. We're okay!" It wasn't like Pierce and David to refuse an offer of any kind of booze. Charles Fuller, the father of Darrin, Brett, and Mitchell, was visibly anxious as the guests arrived, and when Darrin asked him if he should bring more chairs into the living room, where all the guests were gathering, Charles' quick shake of the head and a dismissive "Everything's okay!" indicated to Darrin that his father was preoccupied with something. Once everyone had arrived, Charles quickly and nervously addressed the assembled guests, consisting of Darrin's two friends, his two brothers, his three uncles, his four male cousins, and Dr. Elliot Collins and his two beautiful sons, "Thank you all for coming." Charles pointed to a spot next to him on the couch, "Darrin, why don't you come over here and sit next to me... because, honey, this gathering is about you." Darrin was excited. Could his wish be coming true? Was his dad about to give him a car as he was about to enter college? Darrin sat on the couch, and his father, addressing him, put his hand on his shoulder, "Son, I can't begin to tell you how much I love you." Darrin sat tall, smiled, and looked up at this father. "Son, I love you so much, and that is why it is necessary for me to do something that is very difficult for me. Darrin, I have been made aware by your brothers and friends that you have a drinking problem." A questioning frown came over Darrin's face. Mr. Fuller continued, "Son, you can't hide it anymore. Darrin, I have gathered everyone here who loves you to help you face the fact that you have a drinking problem. This is an `intervention' son. We are here to guide you into a program that will give you the help you need." Darrin was confused, "Dad, what do you mean I have a drinking problem? Is there some misunderstanding?" "Son, just hear me out. Don't try to deny it." Darrin parted his lips in desperation, and his father continued: "When I questioned your two best friends, Pierce and David, about the things I had heard from your brothers and cousins, they confirmed the worst, that your drinking was out of control. Therefore son, I have decided to enroll you into a recovery program." Darrin jumped to his feet, "Dad, that's nuts! I don't even especially like drinking." Darrin turned to his two friends, "What on earth did you tell my dad?" Pierce was somewhat embarrassed, "Darrin, I didn't volunteer anything. He simply asked me if I had ever seen you drunk, and I said `Sure'." Darrin looked to David, and without any words from Darrin, David said, "Same here, Darrin. I didn't volunteer anything. I was simply asked if I had ever seen you drinking, I said `Yes', and your dad invited me here. I thought this was going to be some kind of party." Darrin looked to his brothers, "What did you tell dad about me?" The brothers were embarrassed and looked to their father. Mr. Fuller was eager to move things along, "Your brothers simply told me that they had seen you drinking on several occasions. Based on that, and on the reports of several other people who have seen you over imbibing, I therefore, son, sought and received a court order for your indenturement and placement into a state certified rehabilitation program." Darrin couldn't believe it, "You had me indentured in order to get me into a rehab program?" "Son, it's just for an indefinite term. As soon as you're healed, you can be released from indenturement. Indentured rehab programs have a much higher success rate than non-indentured treatment." Darrin was frantic, "Healed? Dad, the moment I enter any program the counselors will see that I don't have a drinking problem." Mr. Fuller attempted to soften the blow, "The good news, Darrin, is that I am having you placed in the Rosewood Heights Holistic Reform Center's alcohol treatment program, and Dr. Collin's son, Spencer, will be your personal counselor. The Rosewood Heights' alcohol rehab program is fully state certified, and therefore it accepts those indentured for rehabilitation purposes. And Spencer's brother, Camden, is in college working on his degree in psychology, and as part of his accreditation program he will be working alongside Spencer to assist in giving you the help you need." The thought of being under Spencer's and Camden's care brought a momentary halt to Darrin's complaining, as he was fleetingly reminded of the beauty of the Collins brothers; but he quickly recovered and realized that something was amiss, "If Spencer is a certified substance abuse counselor, then he'll soon see that this is all total bullshit and that I don't have a drinking problem." Darrin was getting indignant at having been made the center of attention and being labeled an alcoholic, so Mr. Fuller knew it was time to reveal more of his plan. He put his hand on Darrin's shoulder and gently guided him to sit back down along side of him. Mr. Fuller spoke quietly, "Darrin, honey, since you have this drinking problem that needs tackling, I thought that it would be a good time to tackle your other `problem' as well, and kill two birds with one stone, so to speak." "Son, everyone gathered here knows that you are a homosexual. I've told them all how when in the past I would suggest counseling for your sexual problem, you would always refuse it. As you know, Darrin, Dr. Collins and Spencer run one of the most successful homosexual conversion programs in the country, with one of the highest success rates of any gay conversion program in the country. So I was thinking, son, since you're going to be in therapy for your drinking problem, why not tackle your other, bigger, problem. Let's give it a try, son. It can't hurt." Darrin immediately understood what was going on and was furious, "No way Dad! You've had me indentured on a phony charge of being an alcoholic so you could ostensibly get me into Dr. Collin's and Spencer's substance abuse program, but your real goal was to get me into their gay conversion program; since you know that no one in this state can be indentured for being gay. I will not tolerate it! Such programs are not only bogus, but the American Psychiatric Association has called them dangerous." Doctor Collins spoke up, "Hold on there, young man! The American Psychiatric Association has a somewhat quirky world view, in my opinion, one that Rosewood Heights addresses; its liberal attitude fails to offer tough solutions to tough problems! We rely instead on the views of the American Psychiatric Council, with its focus and concern on family values." Mr. Fuller nodded in agreement, "Son I love you too much to have to watch you lose yourself in the hedonism of the homosexual life style! And so does everyone else in this room!" The entire room, except for Darrin's two friends, nodded in agreement. Darrin was confused and almost on the verge of tears, "I am not having anything to do with any conversion program!" Dr. Collins spoke calmly, "Darrin, you just need to relax, let go of the things you're afraid of, and accept the help being offered you. All will be well. Our program will make you well; turn you into a whole man, a real man, and a happy man. You will be able to stand tall and smile proudly knowing that you are not doing those things we know you are ashamed of doing; perverse, evil, things in the dark of night." Darrin shook his head in disbelief, "This is fuckin nuts!" Mr. Fuller admonished his son for using such language, and told everyone present that Darrin didn't usually use such language. Spencer explained, "It wasn't Darrin using foul language; it was the fear that is within him that is causing him to lose control, to do and say things he really doesn't mean!" Darrin shook his head, "I am not losing control, and I am not participating in this in any way. This is not acceptable to me, and I will file a complaint!" Spencer walked up to Darrin, smiled, proudly showed his perfect white teeth, and whispered in Darrin's ear, "Well it makes no difference what you think about this! Thanks to the concern of your father, you have been indentured and have no say in what we do with you. You're going to be in this program because you are a slave now; my brother and I are going to start working on you tonight; and we intend to give you the treatment you need." Darrin, taken aback by Spencer's bullying tone, and the way in which he managed to hide his menacing spirit from everyone, fell into shocked silence. Mr. Fuller assumed, from Darrin's silence, that Spencer had whispered soothing words into his son's ear. Mr. Fuller was eager to keep his son calm, "Spencer, you obviously are wise in the ways of calming the troubled. Perhaps you could continue and tell all of us gathered here a little about the conversion program. Maybe if Darrin knew a little more about how it worked, he wouldn't be so afraid of it." Spencer smiled again, always happy to show off his white teeth to the widest possible audience, "Excellent idea, Mr. Fuller!" "The Rosewood Heights' `Chase Away the Gay' conversion program is first of all based on love, pure and simple. It follows best psychological practices throughout, so you can be assured there is nothing `voodoo' going on." Spencer continued, "In the gay conversion therapy program that my father and I created, we drill into the heads of all the boys in the program that they are loved. The reason they have been unhappy is because they have hated themselves. And it's really as simple as that; once the boys in the program accept that knowledge into their hearts they can easily overcome their invert desires." "Within the context of an all-embracing, all-healing, all-loving, program, we use a variety of methods for getting rid of bad thinking and bad habits. And, again, all of the methods we use are fully sanctioned by the review board of the American Psychiatric Council." "We call the compound at Rosewood Heights, where the boys in the conversion therapy program are housed, `Straight Camp'. It is there that Darrin will meet on a daily basis with some of the best counselors in the state who will attempt to assess the nature of his affliction, and instill within him a healthy self-image of himself. Darrin has only fallen into his current situation because he has low self esteem." "The counselors will work with Darrin about what's going on his head, but it is Camden's and my job to get down and dirty with his demons, so to speak. Camden and I are the ones who will be dealing with Darrin's attitude problem, and we are the ones who will be performing the various healing treatments, as well as using scientifically approved aversion therapy techniques on him." "Our program differs from other gay conversion programs, programs that have nowhere near the success rate that we do at Rosewood Heights, because we take a `tough love' approach, involving the healing concepts of `domestic discipline', and which rely on proven successful methods of control and reformation; methods that are not connected with any sectarian or religious interests." Mr. Fuller was curious, "What is domestic discipline?" Spencer answered, "In a family or community or treatment setting, `domestic discipline' is where adults give permission and consent to other members of the family or community to help them maintain a lifestyle rooted in dignity and integrity?" Spencer's answer elicited quizzical looks from many of the relatives and guests in attendance, so Dr. Collins jumped in to answer, much to Spencer's displeasure, "It's physical discipline. Parties sign legal documents allowing themselves to be punished by designated authorities. I use the domestic discipline program in my home. I've used it on my wife when she was alive, and both of my boys have submitted to the program." Spencer started to sweat. He signed the agreement because his father had always been so demanding and domineering, and felt he had no other choice, but he did not want anyone else knowing about it. Camden, too, started squirming, when one of the invited guests asked, "You mean you still spank your sons, at their age?" Dr. Collins nodded, "That's right! Camden is 19, and he still has to get a mouth soaping and a spanking at least once a month; and Spencer, at age 25, still manages to earn a bare-rump session over my knee at least once every couple of months!" Both Camden and Spencer began blushing profusely. The guests expressed their surprise and wonder to each other, "Actually, that doesn't sound like a bad idea!" "I never thought of such a thing. I see nothing wrong with it if people consent." "Same here, I can't see any harm in it. It can only do good!" Another guest called out to Dr. Collins, "I wonder why you refer to your program as using `domestic discipline', as the indentured can be legally physically disciplined without having to sign a consent form." Dr. Collins nodded and smiled, "That's a good question. We refer to our methods as `domestic discipline' because we want to make it clear to not only everyone in our programs, but to their family members and loved ones as well, that the corrective measures we employ are always and only done in a totally loving and caring environment, just as one would find in a loving family situation. All of the corrective measures we employ have an immediate salutary effect. The corrective measures we employ are healing in their total effect!" Darrin, livid, blurted out, "What a bunch of fucking rubbish!" Dr. Collins simply shook his head at Darrin's outburst and looked to his father, "It looks to me, Mr. Fuller, that Darrin must have been quite a handful. I can see now that you really do need the help of my two sons and our program to help clean out that mouth of his! We'll get him straightened out, you can count on that!" Mr. Fuller wanted more detail, "Spencer, what exactly are some of the things you actually do to the boys in order to effect the good results you claim to achieve?" Spencer, his face red from embarrassment, was happy when his father thought it best to steer clear of details in such a forum, and answered the question for his son, "Mr. Fuller, I think it would not be helpful in this intervention to delve into technical details of the program." "Spencer could explain in detail just what aversion therapy entails; give examples of the use of such things as the `torch', the `squealers', the `punishment mattress', or forced `ice baths', and so on, in order to help Darrin come to terms with himself. But it would be like a surgeon giving a graphic description to a patient and his family on the surgery he was about to perform. It would simply be unnerving to the patient and his family, and would serve no useful purpose for the success of the surgery. The patient and the family know that the surgery will have a good end. The patient will be healed. There is no need to go into surgical detail because it would only upset everyone. And what Spencer and Camden will be doing to Darrin can be considered a sort of `psychological surgery'. And just as with real surgery, it is does no good for a patient and his family to hear all about gory technical details." Mr. Fuller nodded his head, "I understand, Dr. Collins." The awkward silence that followed was broken by Darrin's friend, Pierce; "This sounds totally sick!" Darrin's other friend, David, also spoke up; "Don't you worry, Darrin. Pierce and I are going to follow up on this. A pack of lies has been used to get you indentured, we're going to report this, and we will be visiting you on a regular basis until this mess is cleared up." Spencer snapped his fingers to silence Darrin's friends, "I'm going to have to ask you two boys to leave! Come along with me, I'll escort you to the door!" Pierce and David were somewhat slow to get moving, so Spencer encouraged them, "Come along!" David hissed at the young counselor, "Don't worry, we're leaving! You people are nuts!" Spencer followed the two boys to the foyer. Once out of earshot of all the guests, he opened the door for Pierce and David and spoke, "I would advise you two not to make any trouble! And don't bother showing up at Rosewood Heights, because there's no way I'm letting you two visit with Darrin!" David sneered, "You are a fuckin sicko!" Spencer curled his lips into a sneer, "If you dare to show your face at Rosewood Heights, I will involve the police, and I swear you'll regret it!" Pierce, thoroughly repulsed by the young counselor, gave him a good kick in the shins, and he and David then bolted. Spencer followed them outdoors, but did not pursue them. He quickly closed the door behind him, and shouted out, "Faggots! Your pal Darrin is gonna pay for what you just did to me, big time!" Once back inside, Spencer put on his widest smile and addressed the guests, "I'm sorry, everyone, for that little scene. Darrin's friends are two very nice young men, and they were just overreacting to something they did not understand. I think you all realize how difficult hearing the truth about ones we love can sometimes be painful." Spencer walked up to Darrin, and put his hand on his shoulder, "It's time at last for you to finally be happy and grateful, for we are going to turn you into a real man!" Darrin shuddered, but his relatives loved what Spencer had just said. Everyone's face lit up with smiles for the first time since the intervention began. Spencer, keeping his hand on Darrin's shoulder, addressed the room as he gazed at Darrin, "Remember everyone, we're going to be using methods sanctioned by the review board of the American Psychiatric Council, so there is no need to be concerned whatsoever. Some of our methods may seem harsh to the lay person, but be assured our methods bring positive results, and I can promise you that Darrin will one day be thanking his father for making the decision to have him indentured and entered into the Rosewood Heights Holistic Reform Center's gay conversion program." "And let's not forget, also, that Darrin is a slave now. He was indentured for having a substance abuse problem. And the indentured require special treatment. Being indentured means they have to face up to some hard facts. Successful servitor husbandry demands methods a little more stringent in recovery programs than those employed in recovery programs for free people." Spencer squeezed Darrin's shoulder as he continued, almost as a signal to Darrin that he was now under his control, "Out at Straight Camp I oversee a roomful of boys whom we house in cages. All of the boys in our conversion program were indentured by their parents: parents who, like Darrin's father, want their child to be made whole; parents who want us to do whatever is needed to heal broken minds and broken self-identities!" Many of the gathered guests nodded and voiced their agreement with Spencer. Dr. Collins was proud of his sons, "When Spencer and Camden have finished their work on Darrin, Darrin will be a new man: a straight boy who loves life and women, just the way guys are supposed to!" Everyone smiled, hopeful in the promise of Darrin's eventual healing. Spencer clapped his hands and addressed the guests, "Ok, everyone. I think it's time to move things along. I want to thank all of you for making this a successful intervention. I know such things are quite difficult on everyone. The good news is that you all know the full story of what's been going on in Darrin's life; but know now that he will soon be within the safe confines of a sound conversion therapy program, and you can all unite behind Darrin with your best wishes!" "Since this has been so difficult on all of you, what I suggest is that Camden and I now escort Darrin to `Straight Camp'. The sooner we can get started on Darrin's therapy, the sooner he will find peace. So I would like for you all to stay here and try to have a good time. My dad will stay behind and help you all to understand the process a little better, and answer any questions you may have. You all have a right to celebrate tonight, since the difficult first step has been accomplished!" The guests were relieved that the most difficult part of the evening was over, and all called out their thanks to Spencer and his father. The realization that he would now be under the charge of Dr. Collins and his two sons caused Darrin to break out into a cold sweat. As the guests continued to voice their thanks to Spencer for doing such a good job, Spencer and Camden each got on either side of Darrin and started to lead him out of the room, but Darrin protested, "Dad, don't let them do this!" "Son, everything is going to be okay. Dr. Collins and Spencer are going to make you well again." "Please Dad. Don't send me away with them! Please Dad. I'll do what you want!" Mr. Fuller walked up to Darrin and put his hand on his shoulder, "Son, it's got to be this way. This will all be for the best. They have to take you away now." "No, Dad. I don't trust them!" "Son, of course you're afraid. It's always hard to face up to our failings and start down a new path of growth. It's time to do this. The program is going to help you!" Darrin began to bolt, but Spencer and Camden were prepared, and each took a firm grip on him. Darrin's little brother, Mitchell, called out, "You're acting like a sissy, bro!" Darrin's other brother, Brett, joined in, "Yeah, you're cock-sucking days are over, Darrin!" Spencer interrupted the inappropriate remarks by Darrin's two brothers, "Mr. Fuller, I think it would be best if you and you're two sons left the room while we get Darrin ready for transport. I've already warned you that this part of the intervention could be embarrassing for Darrin if you and his brothers were present." Mr. Fuller nodded and looked at Darrin. "I love you son. You do whatever Spencer and the other counselors ask you to do, and it will all go easy." Mr. Fuller then snapped his fingers at Brett and Mitchell and indicated for them to follow him out of the room. Once Mr. Fuller and his two youngest sons were out of the room, Spencer spoke, "Now that Darrin's dad and brothers are out of the room, we can get Darrin ready for transport." Darrin's relatives were eager to see what getting Darrin `ready for transport' entailed. The first thing Spencer did was put his hands on Darrin's biceps and felt them up. Spencer freely squeezed Darrin's upper arms all about their length. Darrin's relatives were impressed with the young counselor's self-assurance in handling a homo pervert slave. As Spencer looked Darrin over, he smiled and spoke to his brother, "Camden, our new boy looks like he works out. Let's see if he likes the workout we're about to give him!" Spencer then spoke directly to Darrin, "It's time to be frank with you Darrin. Your life up to this point has been ruled by self-indulgence, doing whatever you wanted, following any path that led to the cheapest and easiest pleasures. In short, you're a failure! But be assured, Camden and I are going to do whatever it takes to change all of that. We will turn your life around and get you feeling good about yourself again. We will do whatever it takes, I promise you!" To be continued... For more of Randall Austin Stories, Please visit the Randall Austin Archive Group.
