He smiled as he recalled letting the crab get away and the wonderful flavor of the spaghetti sauce that Ryan had prepared for dinner. Soon the cool summer night air lulled him to sleep and he dreamt of piloting the yacht across a sparkling coral blue sea with Ryan standing at his side resting his hand on his shoulder. The Master and his Mate - by Deepdiver Chapter 4 - Water Sports The next day Dr. Ryan drove Kyle over to the Coast Guard Center to register for the course on Navigation and boating safety. While filling out the application it came out that Kyle didn't know how to swim. "You mean to tell me we were out boating yesterday and you were crabbing without a life jacket on and you can't swim? My God, don't you realize what could have happened if you fell in?" Ryan said baffled. He determined there and then that Kyle had to learn as soon as possible; leaving Kyle to his form-filling, Ryan stepped outside and pulling out his cellphone, he moved away from the building until his phone registered a signal and then he called an associate who lived nearby and asked if he could borrow his pool. Mission accomplished, Ryan returned inside and joined Kyle, who was still struggling through the mass of paperwork application form, indemnity waiver, privacy policy, Boating Safety Review it seemed endless to Kyle. Eventually, with help from Ryan, they had finished the paperwork and bought the handbook and Boating Rules book they as they headed back to the car Ryan told Kyle that they were going to a friend's to start teaching him how to swim once they had got their swimwear from the 'Gardie'. "But I haven't got a swimsuit!" Kyle said, shamefacedly as he stopped in his tracks. "Don't worry about that," said Ryan, trying hard to hide his glee at the prospect of ogling his youthful protege; "my friends place is secluded and all fenced off, so we really don't have to bother it'll save us time as well as I needn't go and fetch mine we can go straight there!" Ryan was more than pleased with how things were shaping up as they set off to his friend's house. No one was home, as it was a Monday and they were all at work or school. Ryan parked his car in the driveway and they walked around the side of the house and found the gate unlocked as Ryan's friend had indicated he would find it. They went into the small pool house and took off their clothes. Both came out wearing their birthday suits. Ryan was delighted at this turn of events. Ryan dove into the deep end and swam the length of the pool so as to impress Kyle who could see that he was a strong swimmer. When he arrived at the shallow end he called Kyle to join him in the water. Kyle stepped down onto the first step but when he felt how cool the water was he hesitated, which was fine with Ryan, who then got more time to enjoy the sight of his beautiful naked body and how the sun reflected off his lovely golden hairs. He thought Kyle had the body of an Adonis, a Greek youth god. Kyle noticed how Ryan was staring at him, studying his body he felt embarrassed at being naked and the centre of attention and this helped him forget his fear of the water and he slowly lowered himself into the pool. Ryan called him over to himself and got behind him and lifted him up into a floating position. Kyle immediately tensed his body. "Just try to relax. See how easily I can keep you on the surface?" Ryan said softly as his hand held Kyle at the base of his back. Ryan was delighting in touching this boy and getting a close-up look at his body as he helped him stay afloat. "Now put you head back into the water until your ears go under and you will begin floating on your own." "You won't let go of me?" Kyle said, fearing for his life and not relaxing at all. Ryan kept Kyle in this position a good while, savoring the sight of his body up close in the bright sunshine. Little by little, Kyle began to relax somewhat as he began to feel more secure with Ryan supporting him. After a while Ryan gradually lowered his hand into the water and Kyle began to float on his own until he realized that Ryan had removed his hand, and he tensed up and sank below the surface. He quickly got his footing as they were in the shallow end, but came up coughing. Ryan got out of the water and went to the pool house, returning with a diver's mask and snorkel. He put it on Kyle and had him sit on the steps so that his head was below the waterline but he could both breath through the tube and see clearly under the water. Of course the only thing worth seeing under the water was Ryan's naked body and Kyle kept his eyes glued to the sight which was amplified by about 15%. Once Kyle got used to the snorkel, Ryan taught him how to expel water from it before breathing in and how to breath over the water that remained in the curved bottom. Once he was sure that Kyle was comfortable with the diver's mask he had him move down to the deeper end by holding onto the sides of the pool. At the deep end there was a ladder clamped to the pool wall and Ryan instructed Kyle to hold onto the top rung. Then he had the boy use his hands and move down the ladder to touch the bottom of the pool. At first Kyle would shimmy down and barely touch the bottom of the pool with one toe and then pull himself quickly to the surface Kyle felt like he had achieved a feat worthy of a Presidential medal for bravery. But Ryan had him repeat the exercise and had him count while his foot touched the floor of the pool. First he counted to five, then ten and later twenty-five. Then Ryan, who was in the water with Kyle, told him to go down to the bottom and let go of the ladder for a second. Kyle paused to think awhile before he accepted the challenge, but eventually did so; Ryan kept encouraging him to do it again but each time for longer and longer intervals. After a bit, when he let go of the ladder, Kyle found his body would slowly rise up. Ryan berated him for not staying on the bottom. Kyle tried again, but as soon as he released his hand from the ladder his body began to rise. Again Ryan berated him again and told him not to come up until he had counted to twenty-five and said he would go down with him. What Kyle couldn't see was that Ryan was using his hands to back paddle behind his back to keep his body down on the bottom. Since Kyle remained still, his body floated up to the surface. "I told you not to come up until you counted to twenty-five! Just do it!" Ryan said, feigning anger. "I tried but I can't." Kyle protested. "I am right next to you and I do it. Now you do it too." Ryan insisted. Kyle tried again, but just floated right up as soon as he released the ladder just like before. "You are not trying!" Ryan asserted. "I can't stay on the bottom, I swear," Kyle said, feeling frustrated by not being able to stay below. "Are you sure?" Ryan asked. "I can't, I swear I tried, but I can't." Kyle said defeatedly. "Good! Now you know that you can float! See even when you want to stay down, you can't. That is what I wanted you to discover. Your body floats!" Ryan said encouragingly: "Now watch me." Then Ryan pushed off from the ladder and remained perfectly still. First his body went below the surface and then it came back up with only the crown of his head breaking the surface. "Did you see where I was floating? If you stay perfectly still, your body will float and you can breathe through that snorkel. Let's see you do it now." Ryan ordered. Within a very short while Kyle was pushing off one side of the pool at an angle and swimming one stroke before he arrived at the head of the pool. Then Ryan had him move closer to the center of the pool and push off in the direction of the side of the pool Now he was taking two strokes to cross the distance. At the end of the hour Kyle was swimming across the pool. Then they got out of the water and laid in the lounge chairs enjoying the sun as it dried them off. "Wow, I can't wait to tell my dad, I can swim!" Kyle said, elated and flashing Ryan one of his world- class smiles. Ryan pretended to be napping but with one eye kept studying Kyle's lithe body. After a good rest it was back into the water to do more exercises to build up Kyle's confidence in the water. "No one drowns because of the water, Kyle. People drown themselves when they panic. The key is to remember that your body floats and that if you just hold your breath long enough your body will come back to the surface and you can breathe again." Ryan had Kyle roll his body into a ball shape and float along. When he needed air he would raise his head out of the water and then go back into the ball shape, clasping his legs. Because he raised his head out of the water, his body would sink lower as a reaction but would soon float back up to the surface. Ryan explained to Kyle that if he was ever out in the ocean he could last days that way. At one point Kyle got tired and sank and he panicked. He began to flail his arms, which only moved him lower into the water. His eyes opened wide in fear, but in a flash, Ryan had grabbed him from behind and pulled him to the surface. Kyle quickly turned, embracing the man who had just saved his life. The feeling of embracing naked body to body was exciting for Ryan, but poor Kyle was too scared to appreciate the moment. After lunch, Ryan dropped Kyle at the marina and drove into his office to attend a client. Kyle went over to the machine shop to see if he could find anyone. The shop was the size of a small warehouse with a large sliding door half-open in the front. Kyle looked in to see a middle-aged man working on an outboard motor. "Can I help you?" The mechanic asked. "Oh hi, I'm Kyle. I work as a deck hand on the 'Gardie.' I was wondering if I could hang out awhile here." "Nice to meet ya. I'm Kirk; I'm not so sure that would be a good idea." "It's just that the owner asked me to see if I could learn a little about maintenance. Maybe I could just help you. You don't have to pay me or anything." Kyle said, trying to convince Kirk to let him watch. "Well OK, unless the owner says something." Kirk acquiesced. "What are you doing?" Kyle asked, seeing the mechanic moving a flexible cut out about over one half of the engine block. "Well, I am replacing the gasket on this motor." Kirk explained. "What's a Gasket?" Kyle asked. "This thing; it acts as a seal between the two halves. See how it matches up with the holes here." Kirk patiently began teaching Kyle who was already showing his willingness to learn. "So you work for Dr. Ryan?" Kirk said, expressing his curiosity. "Yeah, I just started. I'm all new at this." Kyle responded. "Well, he's a good egg. I hope it works out for you." Kirk said. "So, you know him?" Kyle inquired. "Not so well; but well, I was having a bad time with my wife. This was some time ago. I had done some work on his yacht, but at that time it belonged to his brother. Anyway, to make a long story short, he introduced me to Doc Ryan and we did some counseling with him and now my marriage is just fine. We were already to break up, but he was able to help us through a bad time." Kirk confessed to Kyle. "What did he say?" Kyle asked out of curiosity. "Oh, it wasn't so much what he said. It's how he got us talking to one another again, me and the wife. Actually he had the whole family coming together and he would have us talk about different moments in our lives and then taught us how to listen to one another and appreciate each others' views of things. I'll tell you, I am a changed man. We went from a dysfunctional family to a very happy one, thanks to that man." Kirk explained further. Kyle watched carefully all that Kirk did as he rebuilt the engine; explaining the different parts and what they did. When he had it all connected he put the leg of it into a barrel of water and pulled the cord to start it. It took several pulls but when it turned over and began to purr it was like a miracle had occurred before Kyle's eyes. He rewarded Kirk by unconsciously flashing him one of his smiles and melted the man's heart. Kyle learned something about the mechanical side that day, as well as how to swim; but he also learnt how to appreciate his captain's varied talents and felt proud to be his first mate. There were only two others taking same course as Kyle and they did not seem to be interesting nor interested in Kyle. On Thursday night, walking back to the slip where the 'Gardie' was moored, he passed by a young man hosing down one of the other yachts and he waved to him; but only got a nod of the head in response. Kyle's social life had improved very little since he came to work for the Doc. Kyle spent his mornings studying and cleaning the yacht or with Kirk whenever he was working on an engine. Sometimes he went with Kirk onto other yachts to make repairs or service their engines. Kyle also spent an hour each day working out on the bow flex in the Captain's cabin. He felt somewhat lonely in the evenings and looked forward to the weekend when Ryan was due to rejoin him. * * * Around 6 pm on Friday, Ryan arrived back and brought a couple of lobsters along to cook on the grill. They chatted while they ate. "All going well for you staying here?" Ryan inquired, curious as to how Kyle was adapting himself. "Pretty much, but it gets kind of lonely here at night." Kyle responded honestly. "Haven't met anyone interesting?" Ryan probed some more. "Naw, just the mechanic Kirk. He spoke well of you." "Oh yeah, I haven't seen him for some time. Is he doing well? Ryan asked. "Yeah, he's doing fine." Kyle said, not really wanting to go into much detail. "Oh and I went over to your friend's pool to practice swimming." Kyle said, changing the subject. "With whom did you go?" Ryan said concerned. "Alone." Kyle said proudly. "What? Are you crazy? You are never, ever, supposed to go swimming alone!" Ryan said really upset. "Well nothing happened, I stayed in the shallow end." Kyle said, trying to justify himself. "And suppose you got a cramp in your leg? Who was going to pull you out?" Ryan said feeling his blood pressure rise quickly as he thought of losing Kyle so easily. Kyle hung his head as he replied: "Sorry, I never thought of that." "Look, Kyle, I thought everybody learned as a kid, you never go swimming alone, its just too dangerous." Ryan seemed to be putting Kyle down, but he said this in a fatherly way. "Well, my dad never took me to the beach or the pool. Come to think of it, he never took me anywhere." Kyle stated matter of factly. That night they watched the movie 'Cabaret'" which both fascinated Kyle and shocked him when he discovered towards the end that the two men had slept together. Then next day, Ryan took Kyle to the American Museum of Natural History. Kyle was like a visitor from another planet discovering the planet earth. He especially enjoyed the exhibits of native south americans with their beautiful half naked bodies. When they entered the room containing the life-size whale it utterly blew his mind. On Sunday, Ryan took him to the Bronx Zoo and they both experienced a real 'Father and Son' day together. All the way home, Kyle spoke very animatedly of all he had experienced in two days. It was as if his whole life had been lived in the space of one week. That night before they went to their cabins, Kyle hugged Ryan in a real bear hug of gratitude. Ryan just rubbed his hand through Kyle's hair on the back of his head and felt all his emptiness in terms of paternity were suddenly satisfied. Kyle said "Thanks for everything you've done for me. You know if you asked anything of me at all, anything, I'd do it for you." Ryan hugged Kyle back, feeling emotionally choked by the boy's innocent and unconditional response.
