Mariner23502@hotmail.com Chapter #22 It had been a pretty hectic day and I was feeling more then a little tired but there was one more thing I wanted to do before Stu and I went up to our room. I could see Scott Anderson working in his office and looking at my watch it was almost 10PM. We finished our drinks and as we left the lounge I steered our path too the front desk and the young lady sitting at the reservation desk jumped up when she saw us saying "yes sir Mr. Hampton." "I've seen you here everyday since we arrived and I still don't know your name." It was obvious she was a little nervous and I tried not sounding like the owner as I spoke. "Ethel sir, Ethel Johnson." "Well Ethel, would you ask Mr. Anderson if he would come out here for a minute?" Anderson had taken his jacket off and he was wearing the usual white business shirt with a black and red tie that he had loosened a little. I couldn't tell if it was from being nervous or from working but the telltale dampness under his arms was evident. He started to speak when he exited his office but I cut him off. "Scott, how about a drink? Would you mind sharing one with us?" I said and noticed his hesitancy. "I was getting those records together that you wanted Mr. Hampton but I could use one if you don't mind. Let me get my jacket." "Forget the jacket." I said, "You don't need it." Stu was looking at me quizzically cocking his head but not saying anything. I glanced at him and he grinned seeing the twinkle in my eyes. As Scott walked back through his office for the door that led into the lobby I spoke to Ethel. "Ethel, would you mind getting me a list of the reservations and occupied rooms and bring it too the lounge?" "We don't have any reservations right now Mr. Hampton," Scott said overhearing me make the request. That surprised me. "What about occupied rooms, how many?" I asked as we walked to the lounge. "Only 18 right now not counting the rooms you and Mr. Ricksford are occupying. I believe 11 of those check out tomorrow, 6 on Thursday and the 7th on Friday. Mr. Granger rented 202 for the week. He usually stays with us every other month when he has business here in Lincoln." Scott said following Stu and I. "Damn" I thought as we walked. A 9-floor hotel with the Branston's reputation should have many more guests then just 20. It was going to take some hard work to bring it alive again. I hadn't paid any attention too the number of people moving in and out of the hotel since we had been there and I had a hunch it was not going to be easy attracting paying guests. Moving around the end of the bar, I pulled a bottle of Jack Daniels from the back bar with two shot glasses before looking at Stu and Scott. "Just ice and soda for me Clyde." Stu said. "Whiskey okay with you Scott?" "Yes sir and a little soda on the side please." While I poured the drinks I asked Stu to hand me one of the bar stools, they were backless and not very comfortable. Sitting down I looked at Scott and he looked back at me his gaze not wavering. I liked that in a man gay or straight and I didn't know which he was but intended to find out. I could care less if he was or was not gay but I didn't want someone working for me that had any hang-ups. He was a good-looking young man, brown hair and eyes, well groomed and from what I could see nicely built and he wore a gold band on his ring finger. Sitting the drink down after taking a sip, I took a deep breath, "how old are you Scott?" "27 sir and I'm married. I saw you looking at my wedding band." "That answers that question. How long have you been with the Branston and what are your plans concerning working here?" "Mr. Branston employed me 3 months ago. Mr. Martineze objected but there was not much he could do about it but he didn't like it." He said sipping his drink his eyes never wavering from mine. Just as I was getting ready with my next question he took a deep breath and spoke. "Mr. Hampton lets be frank. I think Mr. Branston suspected something was not right and he hired me as a sort of spy for him and I think Martineze knew this. Martineze acted like he owned the hotel and there were rumors that there was a deal being worked on and someone was buying the Branston. With a little more time, I think I would have uncovered enough information that would have been sufficient for a criminal case of fraud and embezzlement. Monies were being spent on advertising but the results didn't justify the amount of money being spent. Restaurant supplies were not of the quality that justified the money spent. Devon had mentioned that to me a few weeks ago. The restaurant manager was a friend of Martineze but he was off an inordinate amount of time and Devon was more or less running it although he had very little input. The supposed to be limousine service we were contracted for was a joke. Half of the time there were no cars for guests. Cody Walton had mentioned this too me but there was nothing I could really do, Martineze controlled it. He kept those records under lock and key and it was not until today that I was able to see them. I haven't had a chance to do an analysis but I'm willing to bet they will show Martineze was skimming." Scott stopped for a moment and took another sip of his whiskey and soda. The sweat stains had increased some but I didn't think it was from nervousness but more likely from the adrenalin pumping into his system from being able to get things off of his chest. I liked him more as he talked and out of the corner of my eye I could see the attention Stu was paying to what was being said. "Clyde, we let the SOB go." "I know Stu, I'd wish I had him here now. Scott, how much of this does Mr. Branston know, anything at all?" "He only knows what I suspected but couldn't prove. I'm still not sure of what I just told you but I'm pretty sure I'm right. After I can finish an analysis, I'll know more if that's what you want." I wasn't sure if what I had just been told was another bombshell or not, I needed to talk with Robert. Scott seemed sincere in what he had said but he hadn't answered the second part of my first question. "You didn't answer the second part of my question Scott. What are your plans where the Branston is concerned? Do you plan on staying or leaving?" I asked watching his reaction closely. He took a few minutes twirling his shot glass before looking first at Stu and then at me before answering. "Mr. Hampton, I'm married and I have a 3 year old daughter. My wife is a teacher but she can't teach because of taking care of our child. I graduated from the Univ. of Illinois with a BA in Economics and Accounting and I worked days trying too earn a living for us while I was going to school at night for my Masters in Hotel/Motel Management. I was born in Lincoln and as far back as I can remember I wanted to work at the Branston. I guess that is kind of foolish but it's all I ever wanted. I tried but I couldn't get an interview with Martineze for a job, he wouldn't even talk with me. My dad was in the Army with Mr. Branston and he asked him for a job explaining how I had tried. When I met with him and we talked I had the feeling he was suspicious of Martineze and someone else but he didn't tell me who. I don't know it for sure but I think that person was Brian Dickson a lawyer here in Lincoln. It's just a suspicion I can't prove. I mentioned it to Mr. Branston and from the way he got so nervous when I mentioned it I had a feeling in my gut that I was right. Mr. Branston visited the hotel several times and he and Martineze would be gone supposedly on an inspection but Martineze always came back alone. Dickson would come in for dinner every evening afterwards and he and Martineze seemed too have a lot to say to each other. Martineze was always pretty cocky after Dickson left. You asked me about what I want. I want to stay with the Branston if you allow it." He said reaching for the whiskey bottle and pouring another drink. Stu had a look of amazement on his face and I was feeling pretty dumbfounded myself. "That's a mouthful Scott. Anything else you think we should know?" Sipping his drink, it was obvious he was struggling with himself. Turning and facing Stu he looked at him and then me. "You may not want me after I ask you this Mr. Hampton but since we are being frank, are you and Mr. Ricksford lovers?" I could see Stu stiffen at the question but I only laughed saying, "nothing like being frank is there Stu?" "Jeez, I should say not Clyde. Is there a sign hanging on our backs or something? The next thing you know Scott will be asking us about my brother." A broad smile spread over Scott's face as he looked at Stu. "I know Devon Mr. Ricksford, he went to school with my younger brother and I know Cody and Adam. It does not bother me in the least. To be honest I dabbled once or twice when I was in college but I love my wife deeply." "I guess that answers another question I was going to ask but to answer yours, we are." "And what was the other question Mr. Hampton?" "I wanted to ask if you had any homophobic feelings but you answered that before I could ask it. I don't intend that the Branston is to be staffed with gay people but I damn sure do not want them excluded if they qualify should any apply. If you want the job as General Manager its yours but let me warn you, it's going to take a lot of hard work to bring the Branston back." I said standing and extending my hand too Scott. Stu watched intently as Scott stood and shook my hand his eyes shining. "Tell me how you want the hotel ran and that's the way it will be run. If I have any complaints you will be the first I talk with but I wasn't expecting to be General Manager do you have someone in mind as Manager?" "I'll reserve that until after the remodeling. Would you object to telling Stu's brother what you have told us? He will be the Attorney of Record for the Branston and should know everything that has any effect on its operation." "Let me know when you want a meeting and I'll be glad to. I'll get those records for you now." He said turning and walking towards the front desk. * * * * * * * * * Stu and I watched Scott leave and I turned too him. "It's amazing how much you can learn over a drink and just talking isn't it?" "I'll say it is Clyde, you almost sounded like Robert from the questions you were asking. He sounded like he wanted to tell that story. I wonder how much Martineze skimmed while he worked here. I'm amazed that Branston kept him on as Manager if he suspected something." "The real question love, is did Dickson get anything out of it and how long were Branston and Martineze having an affair. Robert should find that really interesting." "An affair? He didn't say anything about that Clyde." I chuckled softly at Stu's missing the big point. "It surprises me you missed that Stu. The implication was right there when he was telling us about Dickson, Martineze and Branston. Remember he said Branston and Martineze went on a supposed inspection of the hotel but Branston never came back? I bet Martineze held that over Branston's head and that's why he was not able to get rid of him. Don't you remember Cody telling us Dickson and Martineze were having an affair? You don't think all they talked about in bed was about making love do you?" "Jeez, first a lawyer and now you're a detective." "And we might need one of those after we talk with Robert. Here comes Scott with the records." Scott placed a box that had once contained 16oz cans of tomatoes on the bar but now held the financial records of the Branston. His shirt was clinging to his chest and it displayed a broad well-formed set of pecs and thick biceps. I wondered for and instant just how much dabbling he had done in college with his classmates. "Thanks Scott. Lock the front door and turn off the lights, the Branston is closed for now. Tell whoever is still here and too be here tomorrow morning for the meeting. Goodnight and get some rest, you deserve it." Tucking the box under my arm and leaning over I whispered in Stu's ear, "feel like getting some rest, it's been a long day?" Stu's eyes flashed as he looked at me, "If that's all you have in mind." * * * * * * * * * That was all I did have in mind and it had been a long, long day. It was almost midnight when we finished showering and were in bed. My mind was whirling with all the information Scott had given us and I was thinking about what Robert might say when we told him. Stu moved over close and laid his head on my chest, his arm over me. His body felt warm and smooth with the odor of shampoo and Ivory soap filling my nostrils. Usually that would have been more then enough to set me off but I was tired and everything else had my head spinning. Stu had said I sounded like Robert but it really was just letting Scott talk and asking a few pertinent questions. He had been carrying it around inside of him and the whiskey helped him loosen up and talk about it. He was a little self-serving at the same time wanting the job I had given him. Most men can spot the way things are going and switch allegiances to protect themselves. I was still thinking when he nibbled my chest with his soft lips and looked up at me. "Got too much on your mind?" "I guess I do, you don't mind do you?" "Sure I do but I've got you for the rest of our lives remember? Lets get some sleep." He said softly and we kissed gently. * * * * * * * * * A very loud knock on the connecting door woke us both. My hard cock was pressed up against Stu's ass and his was in my hand throbbing. He twisted his head around looking over his shoulder at me, "damn and I was just about to be raped by the best looking man I had ever seen in my dreams." "It damn better have been me," I said swinging out of bed and picking up a robe throwing the other at him. He lay in bed stretching like a tawny cat, his muscles rippling, blue eyes gleaming and I was tempted to forget the knock at the door feeling my cock starting to harden. He stretched some more grinning, his hard cock outlined under the sheets. "You better answer that before Rob knocks the door down." "He better have a damn good reason if he does." I growled over my shoulder, walking out of the bedroom. Unlocking the door and sliding it back, Rob and Devon walked in carrying a coffee pot, cups, sugar and cream but I just turned and went back to the bedroom with them following. Stu was sitting up in the bed with the sheet pulled up around his waist. He looked like a little boy with his hair all messed up, grinning at his brother. "Coffee, great. Pour for me will you Clyde, no sugar." "I know that." I growled again a little piqued at being awakened so early. The clock was screaming 6:30 at me its red numbers flashing brightly. "Christ Rob we haven't been asleep more then 6 hours, why so early?" "Because Mr. Hampton." He said sitting on the edge of the bed holding his cup. "You called a meeting of your staff for 9 o'clock this morning and you mentioned something about driving too the farm. Why were you so late getting to bed? When we left it was not 10:30." "Good morning Devon." Stu said as he took the cup of coffee from me. "Clyde is not always this grumpy in the morning, usually he is more wide awake." Faking a swing at his head, I sat down beside Robert. "He's right Devon, good morning." "Good morning. It's early but I get a kick out of you two picking at each other like you do. Clyde, I went downstairs while Rob was showering. The kitchens are just opening but no one is around except for the cooks. I was going to bring some coffee and Danish up but nothing is ready yet." "I closed the hotel down last night after talking with Scott Anderson. We talked with him until almost midnight and he gave us an earful." "That is an understatement." Stu echoed from behind me. "Really Clyde, what did he have to say? Maybe we left to soon." "You did and it was all spontaneous." I said and then continued telling him all that Scott had told us about his suspicions and what he had learned. "Anderson was employed by Branston and Martineze couldn't do anything about it. He was reporting his observations back too Branston and there seems to be a connection in it all with Dickson and Martineze figuring in. All of the Branston financial records are in the other room and Anderson will repeat everything to you later this morning." "It sounds like you have been right Devon. Devon has told me a few things he saw going on Clyde and from what you say Anderson has told you it all meshes. I'll be interested in hearing what Anderson has to say. Are you sure you can trust him?" "I'm pretty sure of that but you can form an opinion when you talk with him. He seems to be a pretty straight guy, no pun intended." "I will." Rob said. " How about you guys get cleaned up and meet us in the dining room. Breakfast should be ready by the time you get there if you don't dawdle." Rob said glancing at Stu his eyes dancing and a grin on his face. He sat his cup on the end table and chuckling he and Devon left the bedroom. * * * * * * * * * Rob and Devon pulled the suite door shut and I heard the click of the lock falling into place. Stu threw the sheet back; his magnificent body gleaming in the room lights his thick hard cock lying on his stomach. My cock started thickening, hardening, pushing the terry cloth robe outward and I slipped it off of my shoulders letting it drop too the floor. Moving closer too the bed and opening the drawer in the night stand I took the lubricant out and slowly teasingly covered the aching 9" length as he watched his eyes gleaming, the tip of his pink tongue wetting his lips. I could feel the fire of passion and lust consuming me, boiling in my groin as my nuts contracted and retracted with every stroke of my hand. Stu opened his legs drawing them up and his arms reached for me pre-cum dripping from the head of his cock in anticipation. All I could think of was this beautiful animal wanted me as much as I wanted him and I knelt on the side of the bed running my hand down over his down covered thigh. Stu inhaled deeply his chest expanding, pectoral muscles thickening and his eyes locked with mine. I knelt there for a moment, one hand on his knee and the other slowly stroking my cock. My eyes drinking in his beauty, the beauty I had seen so many times yet found more enchanting each time it was revealed. The golden gleam of rippling muscles as he breathed slowly expanding and relaxing his broad chest, the captivating blue of his eyes and the small smile that played at the corners of his soft lips. Nothing filled my mind except how much I loved the man offering himself to me wanting the fulfilling pleasure that was our love. I moved closer and into the inviting valley between Stu's thighs, his balls covering the soft sensitive perineum flesh between them and his anus. Bending down I ran my tongue over his balls feeling and hearing Stu gasp sucking air into his lungs and then exhaling in a long slow sigh "yessssssss, yessssss" and I took first one and the other into my mouth swirling and sucking them tight. He squirmed and arched his back pushing his groin against my face and I could feel his nuts contracting, moving in their soft sac. I held them tight in my mouth with my lips letting his balls rest on my tongue, waiting for his body to relax before releasing them. Small electric shocks were surging filling my cock with fire as I leaned forward pushing his legs up on my shoulders and he gasped again as the head of my cock touched his quivering anus, the entrance into his hot smooth rectal passage. His eyes bored into mine as I moved my hips letting the head of my cock tease him, my pre-cum mixing with lubricant. The cobalt blue of Stu's eyes gleamed and in the depths I could see the fire of lust and need and I Eskimo kissed him my cock slowly opening him. Stu's hands gripped my biceps tight as he felt the pressure and he groaned softly, "give it to me Clyde, take me please," He pleaded and I pushed answering his plea. Sweat was pouring from both of us and I felt the intense heat, stiffening when his sphincter muscle snapped tight around the head of my cock but I didn't stop the pressure, plunging deeper, deeper reaching for his bowels knowing I had reached the inner depths when the pressure of my pelvis lifted his balls and I lifted my torso up on my arms locking the elbows. Lowering myself after a few ecstatic filled moments his legs slipped from my shoulders and locked around my waist. Drawing his body closer with my hands on his thick muscled thighs, I leaned forward again stretching my legs out his ass impaled on my thick throbbing schlong. Sweat ran down my chest and ribs and I felt it mixing with the lubricant between us as if my pubic hair was a sponge and it was squeezed out with each long slow piston thrust. Stu's cock had softened as I took him but I watched it grow with each thrust of my hips, stretching like a thick staff crowned with a regal blood engorged orb. His hands slowly massaged my arms and shoulders and his face shone with the pleasure of the feelings he was experiencing from our joining. I knew how he was feeling from the times he had taken me. Low moans drifted up from the depths of his sweat covered chest and my hips were like a well oiled machine driving my shaft deep into the well of passion we both felt the speed quickening with each thrust. Our love making had become like an opiate we both needed and I could feel his heart beating like a drum, my cock hardening as the seeds of my life surged upwards exploding with mind numbing force. We both stiffened and my hips slammed against his ass with a surging force as we both ejaculated hot molten living streams of sperm. My cock surged and spasmed uncontrollably filling his bowels and I watched, almost hypnotized, as he shot great thick loads of his sperm over his chest. My arms felt like they were being held in a vice as Stu gripped them his body surging upwards against me, his muscles rippling like sinewy ropes across his chest and shoulders and his legs contracted drawing me closer and tighter until I was gasping for air. We both were suspended in that climatic void between ecstasy and reality and then we collapsed together breathing heavily in the euphoric after glow of sated and slackening lust. It took a few minutes for the intensity of our love making to slowly recede. The sperm from his loins and our combined sweat were like rivulets running down from our bodies. He slowly played a tattoo up and down my spine with his fingers as he softly cooed under me. Lifting my head I kissed him gently our tongues playing games and he had a grin on his face. "Is that how I make you feel, like grinning?" Stu gave me a peck on the nose, his blue eyes softly shining. "No, with you it is always a smile. I was just thinking about what Rob said about dawdling. Do you think he would call this dawdling?" "I doubt it but if he does, it's a new name for making love and I love you." "Me too. Do you know your cock is still buried in my ass? Mmmmm it feels good, don't take it out, at least not yet. I like it there." "As long as you grip it like you are its almost like wearing a cockring and it's only half hard." Grinning at me with an impish gleam in his eyes Stu started squeezing and contracting his anus. If he did much more of it, I wouldn't need a cock ring. The sensitivity was still there and I could feel the swelling inside his ass. "Keep that up and we are going to miss breakfast and the staff meeting." Still grinning, he broke into a soft laugh. "You've never fucked me twice in a row, think you can handle it?" He said releasing my cock so it could slip from his ass. "Try me when we have more time lover." I said moving off of the bed. * * * * * * * * * Stu and I showered and dressed casually. When we reached the hotel lobby there was a hubbub of noise coming from the direction of the dining room. Scott, Robert and Devon were standing at the receptionist desk and when they saw us get off of the elevator, they walked towards us. There was a little gleam in Roberts's eyes and he glanced at Devon. Scott extended his hand saying, "Good morning" and I shook hands with him. I liked his firm grip. "Morning Scott." I said as Stu walked past me joining Robert and Devon, I could almost hear that conversation but I didn't mind if it was helping bring Robert and Stu closer. "I see you've met Robert." "Yes, we have had an interesting conversation. I like him. I hope you don't mind but I brought my wife and daughter with me this morning, I'd like for you too meet them." "That's fine Scott. How about the staff, are they all here?" "All of them are here that are supposed to be and from the noise you can tell they are anxious. The original staff called for 29 positions, 24 are here, Nicky I told you about earlier. Martineze, the restaurant manager and the bartender that we let go last night are not here. I tried reaching Hector the restaurant manager but his telephone has been disconnected. I managed to talk with his landlord and he told me he didn't know where Hector was he had left owing back rent. He has a warrant out for him so I think we can safely say he won't be back. Here is a listing of the various positions but I didn't have time to list them by names, I'll get that done later if that's okay." That's okay Scott. I won't be needing that just now. Lets eat, I'm starved." * * * * * * * * * When we walked into the dining room, the hubbub died to a low murmur and all heads turned in our direction. The kitchen staff had set up a small but adequate buffet along one wall and someone had laid the floor of the dining room out in a meeting fashion with a head table. Turning to the others I whispered, "go ahead through the buffet, I'll be right with you" and I walked up to the front of the room and stood facing the small crowd. Some were holding a coffee cup or a glass, others were still eating and forks were suspended between plate and mouth but all were anxious. I didn't feel any tension just an air of curiosity, apprehension. I wasn't the worlds best public speaker but I had 25 people that needed answers too the rumors that had been circulating. "Ladies and Gentleman, my name is Clyde Hampton for those of you that don't know already. I'm sure you have many questions about the Branston and me. We will try and answer all of your concerns as soon as I finish breakfast. So please, finish yours and we will start shortly." Stu and the others were sitting behind me. Stu had brought a plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, hash brown potatoes and toast for me with coffee. Someone, probably Devon, had placed coffee and ice water decanters on the table. The hubbub started again, but not quite as loud as before, when I sat down beside Stu. He leaned over whispering, "You surprise me more everyday." "I surprise myself sometimes." Finishing my breakfast with a second cup of coffee in front of me I leaned back surveying the people sitting around the room. They were mostly younger people with the exception of the chef's. While gazing over the room, the door opened and someone looked inside. "Scott, would you see who that is? If it's one of the remaining guests, make our apologies and explain the situation. No charge for their rooms but ask them too watch for the re-opening of the hotel." Scott returned in a few minutes nodding in my direction. Standing I tapped my water glass with a knife. "If everyone is finished, let me have your attention. Let me introduce the people with me. On my far left is Mr. Scott Anderson whom I'm sure you know. Are Mrs.& Miss Anderson with us?" "Their right over there Mr. Hampton." Scott said indicating his family sitting alone at a table close to the front. "Join us Mrs. Anderson please and bring your daughter." I said and a very attractive woman stood up holding a young girls hand. After they joined Scott I turned back to the staff. "Next too Mr. Anderson is Devon Walker whom you also know. On my immediate left is Mr. Robert Ricksford my attorney and on my right Mr. Stewart Ricksford, my partner. Robert is one of the partners of the law firm of Ricksford, Ricksford and Luskins in Baltimore. Robert represents me and he will represent the Branston." I said taking as small sip of water. "I won't go into a lot of details except to say that Mr. Stewart Ricksford and I have bought the Branston from Mr. Clay Branston. Mr. Martineze and Mr. Hector are no longer with the Branston and won't be in the future. On my instructions, Mr. Anderson discharged one bartender last night." I took another sip of water. "I'm sure you noticed that the main entrance is locked and you are wondering what the future of the Branston is and your futures. It's only fair that you should know. The Branston will be undergoing an extensive remodeling and while it is, all operations will stop while it is being remodeled. Each of you will receive one month's salary at your current level. If there are any hardship cases, they will be considered on an individual basis. Those of you that will consider filing for unemployment, we will assist as much as we can. That's it in a nutshell, are there any questions?" "Yes sir." A young man said standing. "We have been hearing rumors about a takeover but this is pretty sudden, closing Branny down. I don't think any of us make over $5 and hour except maybe the cooks. Servers are paid $2.25 and hour and tips make up any difference. I know you don't have to pay us anything but $10 a day is only $50 a week not counting tips." "Good point. Any others?" "Yes sir, I have one. Will you hire any of us back after you finish remodeling?" A young girl in the back said standing a little hesitatingly. "Each one of you will be given first option on re-employment. I would like for each of you to give Ms. Ethel Johnson your current addresses and phone numbers before you leave today. Ethel, where are you? Stand up please. In addition, you all will receive a bi-weekly newsletter on the progress of the remodeling so be sure your addresses are current. Ms. Johnson will be the editor and if you have any input during the remodeling give her a call. Any other questions?" "Yeah, how about the "cooks?" An anonymous voice growled from the audience. I looked in the direction of the voice but there were several people that might have said it. That irritated me some. "I don't know who said that but lets be perfectly clear. We are trying to help you out as much as we can and the criterion I have just told you applies too everyone with the exception of Mr. Anderson, Mr. Walker and Ms. Johnson." The voice growled again "Why them, the special?" I snapped my head in the direction it had come from but still could not identify the person. I could feel anger rising inside of me and I stared in the general direction the faceless voice had come from. "If whoever said that does not have the guts to stand up and address me face to face, he does not deserve an answer. This I will say to whoever said it. It is none of your business as to the why and I am not obligated to tell you or anyone a damn thing. Is that clear?" An almost deafening silence spread over the room and I was breathing heavy trying to control my anger as I looked out over the faces looking up at me. What I had intended to be an informative meeting seemed to be turning into a confrontation on the basis of one voice injecting suspicion of my motives. Walking around too the front of the table, I leaned back on the edge with both hands gripping the edge. "Ladies and Gentleman, I apologize for the brief loss of my temper. Usually I am able to confront an accuser face to face but it seems someone of you prefers to remain unknown. The Branston is not unionized and everyone has the right to ask questions- - - "It should be" my unknown antagonist said but this time I saw him sliding behind another employee and I walked slowly across the floor to where he was sitting. Stu said "Clyde" but I ignored him. Two men sitting in front of the man who was trying to hide moved aside under the steady glare of my eyes and I stood silently for a minute looking at the unkempt individual hunched down into himself. "What's your name sir and where do you work in the Branston?" I asked softly holding him with my eyes. This loudmouth clod sat quietly for a minute and then mumbled something that sounded like Richard or Rictor. "I didn't hear you, what was your name?" Someone from the group said, "Richard Montel, he's an assistant cook." "Thank you." I said my eyes not wavering. "Well Mr. Montel, someone has called you a cook. I think they are being generous in their appraisal. I would say your appearance is that of a longshoreman not someone that prepares food for public consumption." "How would you know? You ain't seen me cook." He growled defensively. "No, your right I haven't and it's not likely that I ever will. That is unless I was to visit some slop house. My question is how you remained here at the Branston but I'd rather not know. Mr. Anderson!" I called over my shoulder. "Yes sir." Scott answered standing. "Mr. Montel is leaving us. Would you escort him out and pay him the one months salary I promised? Be sure he signs a receipt as payment in full for his services. Any objections Mr. Montel?" Montel did not answer, he just glared at me sulking as he stood. I almost wished he would do something but from my experience in the Navy and on the Baltimore docks, most sulkers seldom did but I didn't take my eyes from him calling out again. "Stewart would you go with Mr. Anderson and Mr. Montel?" I heard a chair scrape the floor behind me and then Stu come into my vision. He walked behind Scott and Montel and I watched until they walked out the door before returning to our table. I felt strangely calm and in control as I sat down and reached for my lukewarm coffee. I could see everyone looking at me and only a few heads were nodding as they talked quietly. "Lets take a break. Freshen your coffee if you like or get something from the sidebar. We will continue in a few minutes, FRESH." "It looks like I'm not getting off on a very good footing Robert. What do you think?" "You did exactly what I would have done Clyde. There is usually one or two of that type in any business. If you are going to do what you have said you are, it's always better that you find the discontents early." "I intend doing exactly that but I don't want the staff thinking I'm a dictator." "None of them have left Clyde. I think you know what you are doing although you might not. Here come Scott and Stu, buck up and lets get this over if you still want to drive up to the farm." "I do." I said tapping the water glass again. "If you will take your seats again please, we continue." After a few minutes Scott and Stu rejoined us and after everyone was seated again and I stood. "I'm sorry for what just happened. But before we go on, does anyone else feel as he did?" I said scanning the group. No one spoke or stood. "Good, I appreciate it. I said earlier that the Branston would be completely remodeled and it will. Each of you will receive the pay I mentioned and we will consider any special cases on an individual basis. We will help you all we can. Those of you that leave your addresses with Ms. Johnson as I requested will be kept informed of the progress in reviving the hotel. I'm feel sure that most of you realize her condition and if we are to be a viable entity in Lincoln we must be able to offer top services in appealing surroundings. The Branston does not just belong to Mr. Ricksford and I. She is yours. Each and every one of you are her heart and she won't survive without you regardless of how well she looks. The Branston will not be operated as she was before. . . ." I hadn't expected a standing ovation but everyone stood applauding and my friends behind me had joined in. I glanced at Stu and he was beaming, his eyes shining. Robert moved behind me and leaning over he whispered in my ear, "You should have been a politician." I just grinned at him raising my hands. "Thanks for that. Everything I have just said is written in stone, you will receive what I said but it is for a leave of absence. When the final plans are completed, there will be work for each of you that want it. I don't know exactly what but believe me there will be. The past is gone and we have only the future. Mr. Montel asked if Mr. Walker, Mr. Anderson and Ms. Johnson were special. Yes they are. Mr. Anderson will be and is the General Manager and Ms. Johnson is his secretary if she wants the job. Mr. Walker will be the Manager and Supervisor of all dining facilities. Those appointments are effective today. Mr. Ricksford and I have other positions in mind but they will have to wait for now. Right now you number 23 but that will change. I don't expect anyone to do the job of two people. Consider yourselves the nucleus of a new and better Branston." Another round of applause shook the room and I held my hands up again to quiet them. "If there is nothing else, thanks for your time. Give Ms. Johnson those addresses and everyone return on Monday for your checks. If anyone wants to meet with me privately, I'll be here for another half hour. Thanks again." I said turning too Stu and Robert. "You never cease to amaze me. I could hug you if there weren't so many people here." Stu whispered and Robert shook my hand. "Clyde, I think you better go back too school and get your law degree. I've never seen a jury turned the way you just did." "I couldn't have done it without you guys. I was scared silly." Unconsciously putting my arm around Stu's shoulders, he didn't move even though I saw Scott carrying his daughter with his wife walking towards us. "Mr. Hampton, my wife Veronica and this is Melissa." "Nice meeting you Mrs. Anderson. Scott has told me about you and Melissa." "And he told me about you Mr. Hampton. I really appreciate what you are doing for Scott." "He deserves it but I'm sure you know that." "I guess I do but thanks anyway." "Your welcome. He has quite a job ahead of him. If you will excuse me, I think Ms. Johnson wants to see me. Scott would you wait for just a moment and talk with Ethel and I?" "I'll be with you in a few minutes hon, take Melissa." Scott said handing his daughter to his wife and turning back to Ethel and me. "Mr. Hampton I do what the job and I appreciate it more then I can tell you." "I thought you might Ethel, it starts today. The personal files are in my room. Would you get them and condense the information they contain. Scott, you and Ethel outline the newsletter I promised and we will go over it and the personal files tomorrow. I've got to go up to my farm in West Point and that will take the rest of the day. I forgot one thing. Keep two maids on payroll until all of our guests are gone and then one afterwards so our rooms can be cleaned and double their pay for now. You might ask them if they could clean the dining room also. Is that okay Stu?" "Of course. I never was much at cleaning." He said with a grin. * * * * * * * * * The hubbub died out as people left but no one else came to see me. Devon suddenly appeared from the lounge carrying a tray of Bloody Mary's sitting it on the table." "You are a life saver Dev." I said. "I thought maybe we all could use a pick-me-up after that session. I think everyone was relieved when you canned Montel; he always was a troublemaker. He was Hectors butt buddy so not much could be done about him." "Butt buddy Dev. Really?" Robert said holding his drink halfway to his lips. "Yes Rob, but I don't have first hand experience, just word of mouth from a couple of people that do. He always gave the busboys a fit." "It's a good thing we found it out now. If everyone is finished with their drinks, how about we head for the farm. We can stop at a diner that Cody and Adam took Stu and I too for lunch. Stu must think I'm on a diet from what he fixed for breakfast." "I know the one you mean Clyde, Diner 77. Gerry Manning works there. I sure would like him on my staff, he's good." "Ask him then Dev." I said as we walked towards the lobby. I had forgotten all about Nicky and he was standing with Scott at the front desk talking. "Nicky, I thought you were in school until this afternoon?" "I was Mr. Hampton but they called a teacher's meeting for this afternoon. Sorry I missed the meeting, Mr. Anderson was just telling me about it." "That's good. Scott, fill Nicky in and Nicky, come back tomorrow and we will talk. Will you do that? We are in a rush right now." "Yes sir, no problem. I'll be here." He said softly. "See you then." I said leaving the hotel. * * * * * * * * *
