			   The Cabin by the Lake

Chapter 13

The guys were making good time traveling down the trail. Dennis and Kyle
were able to talk in whispers. This gave the boys a little comfort knowing
that they could talk to each other without being heard.

"Dennis, I think we are doing the best thing by going along with Jack and
Walt. Life could be a lot worse. If we play our cards right maybe we can
escape and come out of this alive."

"Escape is out of the question, unless we are absolutely sure we can pull
it off. I am with you and we will watch for the opportunity. Just be
careful, I don't want to be on the receiving end of a bullet," said Dennis.

"Have no fear, I feel the same way. I think that we should be careful and
not try to talk too much. You never know when they will hear something and
become suspicious. Let's try talking out loud about anything, the weather,
the birds singing, the scenery or the like. Maybe they will let us do
that. Jack and Walt should get use to us talking and maybe relax their
guard a little. We can always talk in riddles and maybe fool them, although
I rather doubt it. They seem too be smart to fall for something like that,"
Kyle said.

"Agreed!" relied Dennis.

"Hey, Jack! Did you see that deer we just passed over on the left. A real
nice buck," Dennis said loud enough for all to hear.

"Afraid not. I guess I' ll have to keep my eyes open. I'd like to stop and
take a little rest. My butt is getting very tired. I'm not use to sitting
in a saddle for this long. Hey, Walt want to take a break?"

"You bet! I have been ready for quite sometime now," replied Walt.

"About a mile on down the trail, is a little lake with a hot spring. We can
stop and take a little dip and soak our aching muscles," Dennis said.

"Sounds good to me,” said Jack.

"I would say hurry up a bit, Jack. I am ready to stop now,”
complained Walt.

"I don't think we should pick up the pace any. We don't want to overwork
the animals. We could wind up carrying everything on our backs, if we tire
them out and they became exhausted," explained Kyle.

Soon they were at the hot springs. They dismounted and tied the animals and
unloaded the packs to give the animals a breather also.

"We have come quite a good distance today. What about setting up camp and
getting an early start in the morning?" asked Dennis.  "Sounds like a good
idea to me. I know we won’t get an argument from the horses. Let's
go soak a little before setting up camp," said Walt.

"How about me setting up camp while you guys are relaxing?" asked Kyle.

"Not a good plan. You can come with us so we can keep an eye on the two of
you. It would be just like you to ride off on the horses and leave us
here," stated Jack.

"Now, do I look like someone who would do such a mean trick like that?"
asked Kyle.

"Yes!" came the reply from both Jack and Walt.

"Ok, then, let's go soak," responded Kyle.

After soaking for awhile in the hot water, camp was made. The horses and
mules were tethered in a grassy meadow to graze. Kyle and Dennis started
the evening meal while Jack gathered some fire wood. Walt had the task of
watching the boys, and was sitting on a log. He was far enough away so they
could whisper to each other without being heard.

"Kyle, I think trying to escape would only put us in jeopardy. I don't
think we should try until the last day. Remember, there is another hot
springs after we get on the other side of the mountain, close to Eugene."

"Let's leave the pack and saddles on the animals, so we can make a quick
exit. The hot springs will be out of sight of the horses. Jack and Walt
will probably put their guns in their boots like they did tonight. I'll
leave a dog whistle under your boot. Use the excuse that you need to go to
the bathroom, Slip your boots on and go behind a big tree and really blow
the whistle which only the animals can hear. It should cause the horses to
become very restless. You will come back and say that you are going back to
see what is causing the problem with the horses."

" I will stay in the water with Jack and Walt. They should let you go. You
can get the animals all ready to go and you can give a yell that you need
some help. Then, I will get out of the water, slip my boots on and say that
I am going to help you and grab their boots, making sure that the guns are
in the boots and come on the run. They will not be able to go very fast
over the lava rock and we can leave in a hurry on the horses."

"We can go about a mile and slow down. I will send the police a text
message and tell them where they can find Jack and Matt. Yes, I have your
cell and the spare. I put new batteries in them. Here take one but keep it
out of sight and be sure to turn the ringer off and put it on vibrate. Then
we can head home. We can call home and tell Dad and Terry that we are on
the way. We will have to do this before we reach an dead area for the cell
phone" explained Dennis.

"You know, Dennis I think this will work. We have to keep poker faces and
don't say or do anything that might make them suspicious. I certainly hope
we are good actors. I just think we can pull this off. How much longer do
we have? asked Kyle.

"About three days, maybe four. So we have a little time to make Jack and
Walt believe that we are not going to try an escape. We had better leave
the saddles and packs on the horses and mules each night until after we
have had our swim. Jack and Walt will get use to us doing that and
shouldn't think anything of it when we get ready to leave. If either of us
feels that all is not going right, we will cancel the plans. Just say that
s'mores would really taste good about now. The other can agree. Of course
we will probably have to explain what s'mores are," said Dennis. "We could
even make some. I put all the ingredients in and all we have to do is roast
the marshmallows.

"Hey, dinner is ready. Grab a plate and fill it up," announced Kyle.

"Boys, this looks good. You two are really spoiling us with your
cooking. How long have you been in the packing business and where did you
learn to cook?" asked Walt.

"Just a little over one year. We learned from our manager, who gave us
copies of his recipes. I inherited the business from my mother and we had
to learned everything from scratch. Of course we had the best teachers,"
replied Dennis.

"How much longer before we reach our destination?" asked Jack. "Just
curious of about how many more delicious meals we are getting from you."

"Jack, probably three maybe four days. We ran out of food so the rest of
the time all you get is skunk stew, that is if we can find a skunk and you
can shoot it," laughed Kyle.

"Sure, Kyle, you're not kidding me," laughed Jack.

"I guess you know that you are safe. I am not going anywhere near a skunk
much less cook it," continued Kyle. "Just kidding about running out of
food." Kyle was thinking to himself that it appeared as if Jack was letting
his guard down a little, which was good. Maybe this would , help with the
planned escape.

Toward evening, Walt said, "I would like to visit the hot springs again
before turning in for the night. Anyone care to join me?"  "Not me," said
Jack. "I am just going to stay here and keep the fire warm."

"I think that I will secure the camp for the night and turn in early. We
have a long day ahead of us tomorrow and I am completely bushed."

"Walt, I will join you. I like to get out of all the work, I can. That hot
water should really make me sleep tonight," said Dennis.

Dennis and Walt headed for the hot springs. When they were away from camp,
Walt said in a very soft voice. "Dennis, I am glad that you came. I wanted
to get either you or Kyle alone. I breathed a sigh of relief when Jack said
no about coming. I crossed my fingers and wished that one of you would. I
must tell you that I have no bullets in my gun."

"Walt, let's get in the pool and then we can have a long talk. I have a
feeling you have something very serious to tell me," Dennis said in a very
puzzled voice. They shed their clothes and got in the soothing water.

"Dennis, what I am about to tell you will probably give you a heart
attack. Please just hear me out," pleaded Walt.

"Walt, go ahead. I won't interrupt you."

"You know that Jack and I were involved in a bank heist and a security
guard was killed. I want to start at the beginning and tell you
everything. There is a third man and maybe a fourth involved. Jack is one
of the meanest men alive. He is the ring leader. He was somehow able to
convince the other man and maybe a third to go along with him. I kept
saying no. He would not take no for an answer. He threatened to kill my
elderly parents if I didn't help. I knew he would carry out his threat. Mom
had a little poodle and somehow he got the dog and choked it to death right
in front of me. There was nothing I could do. Jack had a gun pointed at my
head. So I took the only way out and told them I would help."

"I was to drive the get-away car, and the other two were going to go inside
and hold up the bank. The third man was a bank employee and would be
inside. Bill and Jack went inside. The first thing Jack did was shoot the
guard, just to make believers out of everyone in the bank. They got some
money but not enough to make it worth the effort. They came running out and
we left. We ditched the get away car and stole another, the one we torched
near LaPine."

"We knew about your pack operation. Bill, the other man, and Jack planned
the whole ordeal. Jack took me with him and headed for Elk Lake. Bill was
going to Eugene and wait for our call. I don`t know what happened to the
other guy. I never saw him and I still haven`t."  " I don't know a thing
about my parents. I can only hope and pray that they are ok. I overheard
Bill and Jack talking. They're planning on killing you and Kyle and losing
your bodies someplace in the wilderness. I will be joining you because they
are going to kill me also. I don't know when this is going to happen but it
will be before we reach Eugene. Jack has a forest service map and can
figure a way to get out. He just wanted to find out which trail we would be
on and get the use of your horses."

"Dennis, I know that you and Kyle will try to make an escape. You are not
the type just to sit back and do nothing. I want to go with you and turn my
self in to the police," said Walt.

"Walt, this just scares the hell out of me. You were right. We were going
to make our break at the trailhead just outside of Eugene. I just hope you
are on the level and not just a stool pigeon getting information from us,"
said Dennis, very concerned with what he just heard.

"Dennis, I am very sincere. Here look at this gun. It is not loaded and
just for show, to put fear into you. My life is at stake and I'll not
gamble with it."

"Ok, I'm going to take you at your word. I don't think that we have any
other choice," Dennis told him the plan for escape and what would
happen. Of course it has to be changed, since you will be coming with us."

"Dennis, I think Bill will be here before then. I saw Jack sending a text
while you guys were fixing dinner.

"That means we gotta act fast. There's a little lake about a half day's
ride from here. You can fake diarrhea and rush to the bushes. We can stop
and decide to go swimming. We can leave the packs and saddles on the
animals. When I give the signal, Kyle and I will get out of the water and
pretend to be putting on our clothes. When Jack get outs Kyle and I will
jump him. You rush out of the bushes and grab his gun. It is loaded isn't
it."

"You bet. That is one thing he made sure of," Walt replied.

You will be fully dressed, you can hold him at bay while we are getting
dressed. Yes, we have two cell phones .I will send Kyle a text telling him
what is going to happen. He has his phone on vibrate and will just let the
message go to the message center if he can`t answer. If that happens, he
will check it when he gets a chance."

"So let's get out and put our little plan in action. I sure hope it works,"
said Dennis.

"I do, too. If it doesn't our goose is cooked. We have give it a try
because our lives are at stake anyway. So what do we have to lose," said
Walt.

Dennis sent his text message to Kyle and go a reply back immediately. He
agreed with the plan. "Walt, Kyle said Thanks and he will give you a big
kiss when he gets a chance. I think I will check in with the state police
and find out from them what is happening. I sent a message yesterday and
told them what was going on and where and when we would come out and not to
call back but wait to hear from me." Dennis sent his message and was
waiting for a reply.

"Dennis, you and Kyle are really cool and calm about all of this. I had no
idea that all of this was going on. I am sure Jack has no suspicions
either.  He told me that he knew that the two of you would try to escape
but that he would be ready. I knew that you would probably make an attempt.
Just didn't know when. I think Jack is thinking the same as I am-just
doesn`t know when."

Dennis' cell started vibrating and he opened it to receive his message and
relied back. "Walt, big change in plans. The police were waiting at the
trail head in unmarked cars. Bill showed up and was shot while trying to
escape. They want us to continue to the trail head. I need to send Kyle a
message and bring him up to date. I think we still need to `capture Jack'
and take him to the trail head. We have a pair of handcuffs in the saddle
bag. The main thing we have to do is make sure that we get his gun. I don't
want a bullet in me or in either of you. We can handcuff him to the saddle.
You two didn`t know it but you are using specially made saddles. Once
handcuffed to the saddle, a person will go nowhere until the handcuffs are
removed."

"Man, it looks like Jack and Bill picked the wrong couple to mess with. I
am glad that I am finally on you side. It looks like we have to play the
waiting game a little longer," Walt said.

"Walt, I also told the police about your parents and to run a welfare check
on them, I am waiting to hear back from them. I also told them about your
involuntary involvement. I wanted them to know so that there would be no
slip-ups when we arrived at the trail head. I think we will step up the
pace a little and see if we can make in one more day. I certainly hope
so. I don't know how much longer Kyle and I can hold it altogether."

"I have confidence in you two. You're to level headed to mess up at this
stage of the game," said Walt.
