The Cabin by the Lake part II Chapter 5 The next morning, Joel and Jeremy went to court with Kyle's parents. They were going to meet Judy in the back and she was going to take them in the back way to avoid the protestors out front. About thirty protestors showed up. The pro-group showed up and formed a double ring, locked arms and surrounded the anti-group. The pros started chanting `we shall overcome.' The women inside the ring started crying and hugging their children close. The leader of the pro group stepped forward and everyone became quite. "Ladies, you have nothing to fear. We came here for a peaceful anti-protest and we have a legal permit to hold this gathering. It is my understanding the that there was no permit requested or issued to the people in the center of the ring. You may all be taken to jail if the police chief decides to arrest you. Reverend, I understand that you are being investigated for molesting a minor and that charges may be filed." "Leroy, I told you not to tell anyone! Now look at all the trouble you have caused. You just wait until I get my hands on you. You rotten little, fag!" yelled the Reverend. "I didn't tell anyone, honest!" cried a 9 year old boy. "He is telling the truth, I just made it up about you being investigated. I think the police chief might be talking with you now," said the leader of the pro group. "Right you are, Leon. I am going to arrest the Reverend and haul his ass off to jail. I will get a search warrant and search his house and the church. It is hard to say what we will find.," said the chief. "You can't do this. I am innocent. Someone with a cell phone call my lawyer and tell him to come down immediately," shouted the Reverend. "That won't be necessary, I am already here and I will add you are no longer my client. You'll have to find another attorney to hire. I am through with you. Your retainer fee will be returned to you. I think you are going to need it and probably a lot more," said the Reverend's ex-attorney." "Chief, I heard every thing that has been going on. I have signed a search warrant for you. Now you can go and complete your search. Good Luck!" said a judge not connected with the adoption case. "Thank you, your honor." said the chief. "I am not going to charge the rest of you if you leave immediately. You, Reverend will be going to jail. Turn around so I can put these handcuffs on you." "He is not my pastor. I am leaving his church," said a woman with two boys about eleven years of age. "I would like to come into your office and meet with you. My boys told me something that shocked me and I think this is something you should know about." "I will be free about 4:00 if you would like to come in then. The Reverend again?" "Yes, That is fine. I will be there." The circle split and the protesters left in a hurry. They were in shock and filled with disbelief. Several paused for a minute and talked with Reverend Carl. They wanted to know if they would be welcome in his church. "Our doors are open to anyone. Only one thing, all hatred and prejudices-racial, gender, sexual and etc will be left at the door. In our church all people are treated as equals. We live by the Golden Rule and expect all to do the same." "Hey, Dennis and Kyle, lead the way. We are all behind you," shouted someone in the crowd. Just as soon as Dennis and Kyle walked through the door, Joel and Jeremy were by their sides and threw their arms around their waist. Dennis and Kyle took the boys by the hand and walked toward the front of the room. Their lawyer told them they could sit on the front row with him. The judge entered and sat in her chair. She rapped her gravel and said "I would just like to let you know that this is not a trial and will not be handled as such. It is a hearing but I still expect to have you tell the truth. I will have you sworn in." "Mrs. Judy Clark, would you please come to the witness chair. I need your testimony for the record. I know you have given me a copy but I have a couple of questions. First of all, I understand that you and the family are good friends. I would like to know how long you have known them and how did you met?" "I have known Kyle and Dennis for almost 3 years. They came into my office during the Christmas season and told me about their operation at Elk Lake. They wanted to know if I had three needy families that would not be having a Christmas. I took them to the homeless shelter and introduced them to three families. One of the families is working for them now and is in the courtroom. The other two have left the area but still keep in contact. Kyle and Dennis brought us all out to Elk Lake for a stay at their Bed and Breakfast. Everyone was given new winter play clothes plus regular winter clothes. We spent the most wonderful week having fun in the snow. When it was time to leave everyone had tears running down their cheeks. They were given a Christmas with presents galore. They will remember the rest of their lives." "Was this just a one time thing or did it continue?" asked Judge Riley. "We had another celebration the next year. I have already been told that we will have another this Christmas. They make donations to the shelter and my department on a regular basis. If I find a family in need or if someone loses their house in a fire, etc., Dennis and Kyle are first in line to help." Only one more question, "How did Joel and Jeremy get placed in home of Dennis and Kyle?" "The boys lost their entire family in a car accident. All my foster homes were full and I had no place for the boys. I knew that they were in severe emotional stress and would need a lot of tender, loving care. I knew just the place that would satisfy all their needs. I called Dennis and Kyle and they didn't hesitate to take the boys. I have had a psychologist working with the boys and she can't believe the emotional stability the boys have. Thanks to Dennis and Kyle." "Thank you, Mrs. Clark, you may step down, now" "I see no need to call any character witnesses. I can see by the size of the audience and how the situation outside was handled, that Kyle and Dennis are well liked and are respected members of this community. From what Mrs. Clark had to say I can tell what kind of people they are. I have found nothing but good in the character reports that I read." "I would like to talk with Joel and Jeremy privately in my chambers." "Please may we stay out here with Kyle and Dennis?" "Are you sure that you want to stay out here with all these people." "Yes, Ma'am. We know a lot of them and part of them are going to be our new family," said Joel. "Boys, do you really understand what is going on here today?" asked Judge Riley. "Yes, there were a lot of people outside that didn't like gays. And since Dennis and Kyle are domestic partners, those people were trying to stop you from letting Kyle and Dennis adopt us. We lost our parents and all our grandparents in that terrible car wreck. Judy, I mean Mrs. Clark took us out to stay with Dennis and Kyle. They liked us so well that they asked if we would like to stay forever. Jeremy and I said Yes! We want them to become our new Dad and Papa." "Do you know what it means to be gay?' "Oh, yes, Dennis and Kyle told us. It is when two men fall in love with each other. There is another word for two women but I forgot what it is. They talk to us all the time and if we have any questions they will answer them for us. They won't tell us what they do in the bedroom." "Thank you, Joel. I won't ask you any more questions. What about you Jeremy do you want to say anything." "Yes. Are you going to make Dennis and Kyle our Dads? I sure hope so because I really love them," said Jeremy. "Jeremy, I'll tell you in a few minutes but I need to talk with a few more people and I'll tell you first. Okay?" "Okay" "I understand the Kyle's parents and Dennis's dad and his partner are in the room. Please come and have a seat with your sons. Thank you. Are there any grandparents here?" "No, your honor. Nether Kyle or I have any living grandparents," said Dennis "Is it okay if Mom comes and sits with us. She really isn't our Mom but she lives with us and we all call her Mom," asked Jeremy. "Of course she can. Mom, come on down!" "How do you really feel about Kyle and Dennis adopting? Do you think this is a good idea or not." Jennie started crying, "I'm sorry, Your Honor. I have always wanted grandchildren but I accepted the fact that I would never have any. We have all talked to our boys about adopting. So I am glad to say that I am overjoyed." "What the rest of you?" "I feel the same way as Jennie. I think that we are all in agreement," said Dennis' dad. "Thank you. Is there anyone in the room that would like to speak against this adoption? I don't hear anyone. Jeremy would you come up here and let me whisper in your ear? Jeremy didn't say anything but just went up to Judge Riley. She bent down and whispered in his ear. He immediately let out a scream and start jumping up and down and crying. "Jeremy, use your very big voice and tell everyone what I just told you." "She said, "Yes!" Shouted Jeremy and ran back to Kyle and Dennis. Everyone was standing, shouting and clapping. After a few minutes, Judge Riley raised her hands and the people sat and became very quite. "I have just a couple more things to do and then you can celebrate some more. Joel and Jeremy, Congratulations, you are now officially sons of Kyle and Dennis. I have already signed the papers. You can take their names if you want." "Your Honor, before they answer, We would like to say that We would like for the boys to keep the name Snyder. We want them to remember their parents. Kyle and I have talked it over and have decide to legally change our names to Snyder, if this okay with the boys." "This is very unusual but Joel and Jeremy it is your decision. What do you say?" The boys whispered to each other and finally shouted, "Yes" Now the tears really started flowing. "Kyle and Dennis, I have paper work needed to legally change you name in my office. If you can stop by Tomorrow , we'll get the process started." "Thank You! Dennis and I would like to invite every one out the lake for a big barbeque celebration on Saturday the 17. Please call the office tomorrow and let us know how many will be coming with you. If no one is around, please leave a message. No need to bring anything. Your Honor, you are invited also." "Joel and Jeremy you are now legally our sons. Look! Your new grandpa and Grandma are headed this way. Right behind them are your granddad and grandpapa. I can't tell who is more excited-you two boys the grandparent , Mom, or us. I know one thing I bet you are in line for a lot of hugs and kisses, starting now," said Dennis grabbing one boy and Kyle the other. "The rest of you will just have to form a line and wait your turn. This has to be the best day of our lives."TBC
