Chapter 2: A Night To Remember I awoke the next morning feeling better than I had in a long time. The feeling that my senses were on fire was what greeted me everytime I turned around. I had forgotten what it felt like to feel like this. Everything had new meaning and things I had long since taken for granted were suddenly so beautiful. The sunrise, the breeze off the ocean, the sound of the waves pounding onto the white sand of the beach. I had forgotten what life was all about. I was grateful to feel this way again. To feel alive. I began the morning ritual of showering and beginning the routine that for so long ihad performed without thinking. I had essentially running on auto pilot when it came to certain things. Being that I was off today I decided that I was going to start the day with a nice relaxing walk on the beach. I walked for over an hour and realized once again why I had bought this house. I loved the serenity of this place. I finally made it back to the house and decided to take care of a few housekeeping procedures that I had been putting off for some time. As I did every time I cleaned or did house work I went into the living room and turned on the stereo. Music filled the house and I began separating laundry and loading it into the washer. While the clothes were washing I decided to clean the kitchen. I busied myself with the task of cleaning the stove and oven. Something I normally hated to do now didn't seem nearly as bad. I sang along with the music as I worked, stopping intermittently to check on the clothes. I finished the kitchen and moved on to other things. At the end of the day I was very tired but the feeling that I had accomplished something was there. I had cleaned the entire house from top to bottom and even did a little yard work. The laundry had been washed, dried, pressed, and put away. Everything in the house seemed to sparkle. Around 7pm I had taken a long hot shower and was now sitting on the patio sipping iced tea and enjoying the evening. The phone which was laying quietly on the glass table began to ring for the first time that day. I picked up the handset and looked at the caller ID and couldn't stop the smile from spreading across my face. "Hello," I said into the receiver. "Scott?" a voice asked that made my stomach do somersaults. "Yes, who is this," I answered. "This is Josh, I just thought I would call and see what you were up to, I hope I'm not interrupting anything." He said seemingly anxious. "No, I'm just relaxing on the patio, resting after the day I've had," I said smiling. "Oh, tough day at work?" he asked timidly. "No I had the day off, I have been catching up on house work today, you know laundry and the sort. I actually managed to accomplish quite a bit today." I said proud of the fact that I had done everything that I had set out to do. "Oh sounds like fun" he said with over obvious sarcasm. "It wasn't that bad, but now I am enjoying my favorite part of the day." I said wondering why he had called me. "I'll take your word for it." He said laughingly I laughed and waited for him to continue. "Well the reason that I called was to ask you if you were perhaps free tomorrow night. I have a couple of tickets to the symphony and was wondering if you would like to join me." He rushed out almost too fast for me to understand. "Yes I am free, and yes I would love to go with you, on one condition." I stated "Sure you name it," he said excitedly. "Ok, before we go to the symphony we have to stop somewhere first. I am not telling you where because it is going to be a surprise but I think you will enjoy it. The concert starts at correct??" I said while formulating a plan in my mind. "Yeah," he said obviously wondering what I had up my sleeve. "Perfect, that is absolutely perfect." I said excited that the timing would be so good. "So I'll pick you up at what time," he said nervously. "Just be at my house at 5:30," I said "I am driving tomorrow night, that is if you don't mind??" "No I don't mind at all" he said "Good, that will make things much easier." I said already planning out the part of the evening that I had control over. "Ok he said, so I'll see you tomorrow" he said hopefully. "Yep," I said, "be punctual" I added, "Okay," he said laughing, then his voice softened, and he said something that stunned me. Two words that made my heart flutter. "bye babe," he said and before I could answer the line went dead. Those two words were so simple but, they had so much meaning and feeling. It wasn't so much the fact that he said them, but it was the way that he said them. He was, in a word, sincere. I continued to sit outside until once again the phone rang. Looking at the display I saw that it was Rick. I answered the phone and we talked for about an hour. I told him of my plans for tomorrow night and he kept giggling with excitement. I was beginning to think that he was more excited than I was but I knew better. As always he wanted to know all of the details and I of course provided them. I was feeling pretty tired so I ended my conversation with rick only after promising to talk more tomorrow at work, and climbed the stairs to go to bed. I undressed and pulled back the comforter, I opened up the blinds on the large doors and allowed the moonlight to filter in. The clock beside the bed said it was 9:00pm and I smiled realizing that this was the earliest I had been going to bed in a long time. As I sunk between those satin sheets I was still wearing the same smile that I had woken up with. It was nice feeling that comforted me as I drifted to sleep. * * * * * * The next day was a particularly busy one for me. I was still trying to do all of the incoming lab work and do my monthly reports. I was stressed to the max by the time lunch rolled around and decided to order Chinese in and ask Rick if he would like to join me. He graciously accepted seeing this as a perfect opportunity to pump me for more information. The attempts he made were subtle to a certain extent but the vague answers I was giving prompted him to take stronger measures. Finally he surrendered to the fact that I was not going to divulge any further information until I was ready. The rest of the shift went swiftly and I became increasingly distracted with the thought of my upcoming date. When the time came to punch out I realized that I needed a few items from the store. The traffic was light and I had everything I needed from and was home fairly quick. I busied myself with deciding what to wear tonight and then I went into the pantry to find the instrument of my plan. I searched for the slightly weathered but dusty picnic basket. I found my checked table cloth and began to pack the things into the basket. I was waiting nervously around the pool when the doorbell rang. I walked to the door and swung it open. I saw Josh standing there with a bouquet of white roses and wearing a smile that could thaw Greenland. I smiled my best smile and invited him in. What he did next was the classiest thing he could have possibly done. He took my hand, kissed it, handed me the roses and kissed me on the cheek. That did it whatever made me think that I was in control went flying out the window when his lips touched my skin. We went into the kitchen and I put the roses in a vase and placed them on the bar. I knew it was time for us to be going if I wanted to arrive at just the right time. "Josh, it is time for us to go now, your surprise is waiting." I said mysteriously. "After you," he said. We walked to my car and I decided that I should leave the top up. The picnic basket was tucked away in the trunk, and all that was left to do was to get to the place that I knew would take anyone's breath away. We drove without talking for much of the way. The radio was playing softly and occasionally I would catch myself singing along. I would look to see if he had noticed and I would find him looking at me, smiling that priceless smile. "You have a beautiful voice Scott," Josh said while playing with the hem of his shirt. "Thanks," I said blushing. I was not the type of person who liked for people to hear me sing. It made me uncomfortable. This time it was different, the reason I was blushing was because I always blush whenever I get a compliment. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. I noted that and returned my attention to driving. As we were nearing the exit that would take us to our destination I noticed Josh's fingers curling around my hand which was resting on the gearshift between us. I looked over and our eyes met. It was the most powerful feeling I have ever experienced. It was as if in that instance we had become one entity. Our minds, thoughts, emotions, fears, dreams, memories, suddenly merging. I felt closer o him in this instance than I had ever felt before. Chills crawled along my skin like the long bony fingers of lightning streaking across the night sky. I quickly jolted myself back into reality just in time to make the turn onto the winding road. I realized that we were getting close to the spot when the foliage began to slowly disappear. I pulled the car to the side of the road and went around to the other side to open the door for Josh. I went to the trunk and pulled out the basket. Josh grinned and waited for me to lead the way. We began walking and once again I felt his fingers close around my hand. It was a nice feeling. I had visited this place many times in the past years. It was where I came to sort out my thoughts when I was not in the best of moods. I glanced at my watch and smiled at the time, it would be absolutely perfect. We continued to walk until we reached a grassy clearing. I sat the basket down and looked at Josh. "Ok, now its time for your surprise. Close your eyes." I instructed Josh complied without any resistance. He still had his grasp on my hand and I lead him a little further. I let go of his hand and he started to open his eyes and seemed somewhat panicked. "Not just yet," I instructed. I walked around him then slowly and cautiously slid my arms around his waist. I leaned over, kissed his earlobe, and whispered, "Open your eyes." His breath seemed to catch in his throat and I was as if he could not find the words to describe his feelings. Still leaning close, I simply said, "I know" We stood gazing out upon the view. Stretched out before us was the ocean at sunset. This was no normal vantage point though. We were on a cliff, the ocean many feet below us and nothing but air surrounding us on three sides. The sky was painted with fiery rays of sun and crimson clouds. The crystal blue o the ocean water lay in deep contrast to the sky. It stretched for as far as the eye could see and the mind could conceive. From this height, it was if you were looking at the place where heaven and earth met. We continued to marvel at the beauty for another few minutes. Me supporting him as he leaned his head on my shoulder. It was perfection. After another few minutes I ushered us back to our spot and spread out the tablecloth. I had only brought a little food for the two of us. As we sat on the table cloth I removed the Tupperware container from the basket and set it on the ground. I looked up and smiled at Josh. I opened the container and heard a small giggle from Josh. The night before in plans for this evening I had made a fruit salad and allowed it to soak in champagne overnight. I speared a piece of fruit with a fork and brought it out of the bowl. I looked up and was met with Josh's eyes. I slowly brought the piece of cantaloupe to his lips and fed it to him. We continued to feed one another fruit until we were both full. As we sat relaxing on the grass we talked quietly about nothing in particular. Josh surprised me by rolling over onto his side and cuddling up to me. It was a nice feeling. As I lay there slowly stroking his back and watching the stars come out one by one. I was in heaven. Josh was speaking softly about something in particular but to be completely honest I wasn't paying that much attention. I was lost in the feelings that were circling around my mind like a thick fog. Josh noticed that I was not being as attentive as he thought I should so he decided to bring me back to earth. I felt him moving and the next thing I know his soft lips were pressed against mine. We kissed for what seemed like an hour but was nowhere near that long. His lips tasted of the champagne and as his tongue sneakily slipped into my mouth, I tasted what was pure Josh. His distinct taste, along with his distinct smell drove me wild. I knew I could get lost in this kiss and we would never make it to the symphony. I broke the kiss with bated breath and stared at him. "Wow" was all I managed to say. "Yeah tell me about it," Josh said while smiling. "We should really get going," I said. "I guess you're right," he agreed. We packed up the stuff into the basket and started back to the car. When we were on our way to the concert hall the radio was once again on and I once again found myself singing. I didn't even flinch or stop when Josh took my hand. It was the nicest feeling I had experienced to date. The symphony had just begun when we took out seats. The auditorium was crowded and the lights were dimmed. They were playing a classical piece that I did not recognize. The music relaxed me and I smiled when I felt Josh take my hand and we settled back to enjoy the rest of the performance. * * * * * * * * We arrived at my house a little after 11:00p and I invited Josh in for a little while. I was feeling better than I had in a long time and I was about to do something I hoped I wouldn't regret. "Josh, I had a very nice time tonight." I said cautiously. "Me too, I am so glad I let you take me on that little picnic, it was the best." He said while grinning. "Well its kinda late and I was wondering if... umm... if you ummm... if you would like to stay the night." I stammered out. He smiled and closed the distance between us. "I thought you'd never ask" he said while his arms snaked around my waist and he leaned in for a quick kiss. After breaking the kiss I said. "There is only one condition I ask. I just hope you aren't looking for sex cause I am not gonna be ready to do that for a while." He touched a finger to my lips and his eyes sparkled at me. "Baby, as long as you will let me cuddle up to you tonight, I will wait until the end of time." He said and then kissed me again. A tear escaped my eye and rolled down my cheek. He wiped it away with his thumb and said, "No tears babe, lets get to sleep." I locked the front door and shut off the lights. Hand in hand we ascended the stairs and into my room. I pulled out two pairs of pajama pants and offered one to him. "I usually sleep naked," he said. "Well if you were to do that I might not be able to control myself," I said. He took the pants from my hand and said, "Anything for you babe" and went into the bathroom to change. I quickly changed and turned down the bed. I crawled between the sheets and waited for Josh. The door opened and he turned out the light. Walking over to the bed he slid in bed in front of me and snuggled back against me. After turning around and giving me a kiss he whispered, "Goodnight babe." I inhaled the scent of his hair and snuggled closer, placing a quick kiss on his shoulder I said, "Goodnight sweetheart." The sound of his breathing evened out and I slowly joined him in sleep. The last thought that drifted through my mind was one of a small child. Can I keep him. Ok people lemme know what you think.
