John pulled into the driveway of a modest home, a different style than Jake's parents house but otherwise much the same. As John and Jake were getting out of the car, a woman Jake assumed was John's mother came out the front door and walked briskly toward them. "Johnnie, Johnnie!" the woman said as she hugged her son and kissed him on the cheek. "So good to see you." "Hi, Mother. I love you." John said as he returned his mother kiss on the cheek. "And who do we have here?" The woman said as she turned toward Jake. "Mother, this is Jake Kelly, a good friend." "Well I'm so happy to meet you Jake Kelly. I'm Marie. Welcome to our home." Marie said as she surprised Jake by hugging him and kissing him on the cheek. "Let's go in and find your dad." Marie moved between the boys, slid her arms under theirs and walked them into the house. "Joe, John's here." Marie shouted as they entered the house. Just then an attractive man walked into the entryway. "Oh, Johnnie. Good to see you." Joe said as he hugged his son and kissed him on his cheek. "And this is?" Joe said as he turned to Jake and extended his hand. "Dad, this is Jake Kelly, a good friend." "Welcome son." Joe said as he shook Jake's hand then pulled him into a hug. Jake was blown away by all the love and affection of this family. He wanted to cry; why couldn't his family be like this? Jake didn't have much time to dwell on that subject as John's parents took control of the situation and the house was filled with laughter, questions, lots of them, and happiness. John and Jake had to fake some of the answers but basically they were able to stick to the truth about Jake and his family. John thought it best to get all the unpleasant stuff in the open right off the bat. Fortunately, neither Joe nor Marie asked how they met. That would have been tough to answer on the fly. John gave Jake a tour of the house. In John's room, Jake found John's old toy box from when he was a kid. He found a teddy bear and a Raggedy Andy. "Ohhh, I loved my Andy." Jake explained as he picked it up and hugged it knowing his was long gone. John joined him and they found a baseball and a glove. "If we had a glove for my right hand we could play catch." Jake commented. "Well, maybe we do." John said as he got up off the floor and walked to the door. "Dad?" He shouted. "Yes son?" "Do you still have your old baseball glove?" "I think so, let me check." John pulled a football and soccer ball from the bottom of his closet. "How about these?" John asked. "Oh, let's take that back to the apartment. Maybe we can go to the park and have some fun." Jake proposed. A few minutes later Joe walked into John's bedroom. "Here it is." He held out a baseball glove for the right hand and it looked almost new. "Great!" John exclaimed as he took the glove and turned to Jake. "Dad's left handed like you. We're going out in the back yard, Dad. Call if you need us." The two boys proceeded out the back door and began playing catch. They had a great time but it didn't take long for their arms to get tired so they sat down in a couple of lawn chairs and began sharing things about their days growing up. They laughed, teased and jostled each other. They didn't know, but Marie was watching from the kitchen window. She could see how well the two boys got along. They looked like really good friends. Dinner was a wonderful experience for Jake. Not only did he eat the best tasting lasagna he ever had, Joe and Marie took great glee in telling funny secrets about John as a kid. John was appropriately embarrassed. After dinner John AND Jake helped Marie dry the dishes. That was a real circus. Not only were they stepping on each other, Jake made things interesting by putting dishes away not in their normal places. When the time came to leave, Jake was sad. He felt like he had just visited some TV family where everything is perfect. Jake sat quietly, listening to the constant hum of the car's engine. "You okay?" John asked as he glanced at Jake. Jake didn't answer for a moment. "Yes." he said softly. As John glanced at Jake again, Jake was looking at him with tears welled up in his eyes. "You have the most wonderful family. Thank you for sharing with me." That's when John noticed Jake not only had tears in his eyes, he was wearing a great big smile. He smiled back. "My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed it." The rest of the trip they talked about what they were going to do tomorrow and John explained what his schedule was for the rest of the week. He left early every day and got home late. That meant Jake would be alone for most of the day to do whatever he needed to do. Jake's primary objective was to find a job. Everything else would take a back seat. Upon returning to the apartment John got his sample case from the trunk so he could do an inventory and prepare for the next day's business. While John did that, Jake inattentively watched a football game. Before long, John announced he needed to get to bed and get a good night's sleep so he could be sharp for tomorrow's clients. Jake said he was tired and would join him. When they got into bed, John lay on his right side and Jake slid in behind him and wrapped his left arm around John. Jake was happier than he had ever been and John felt so comfortable around Jake. Within a matter of minutes both men's eyes were closed and they were breathing deeply. Jake awoke Monday morning to the sound of the shower running. The clock showed 5:45 AM. He flopped his head back on the pillow. 'Is this real? If it's not, I'm going to be awfully pissed.' Jake thought. He got out of bed, went into the kitchen and made coffee. Then he set two cereal bowls and spoons on the table and placed a box of Frosted Flakes beside John's bowl and poured Shredded Wheat for himself. He took a quick inventory and noticed John's supply of cereal was almost gone, the milk would soon be gone too. He'd go to the store and stock up on some things. Just then, John walked out of the bedroom all dressed except for his suit coat. 'Damn, he's good looking.' Jake thought. "What's this?" He asked. "Your breakfast awaits, Master." Jake said with a smile. John walked over to Jake and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. "You're sweet. Thanks. This gives me a few extra minutes to drink in your beauty." He was grinning the whole time he spoke. Jake checked on the paper and it was there. He and John divided the sections up and sat silently eating and reading. Occasionally they would look up and grin at each other. Jake served the coffee when it was ready. "Well, got to go." John announced as he pushed his chair back, stood up and walked toward the door. Jake followed him. "You think you can behave yourself?" John said as he held and kissed Jake. "It'll be hard without your supervision but I'll try." Jake answered. "Oh, I'll call the apartment manager when I get to the office and ask him to give you a key. If you can stop by the after 8:00 AM they should give you one. See you." John gave Jake a little peck on the lips before hurrying out the door. Jake stood still for several minutes then sat down on the sofa. "I just can't believe this." Jake said out loud. Then he looked to the heavens. "Oh, Lord, please let this be real." And he closed his eyes and breathed deeply several times before rising and going in the bathroom to take a shower. About 8:20 he went to the managers office. An elderly woman was sitting at the far end of the room when he entered. "Can I help you?" she asked. "Yes, John said you could give me a key to the apartment. I'm Jake." "Oh yes, John called. He's such a nice boy. He said you were his brother and you needed a key." She walked over to the desk and began fumbling around. "Here it is." She handed it to Jake. "Oh my, I can sure see the resemblance between you two. Some people try to bring guests in to live with them but I can see you're John's brother," the woman said. Jake took the key and thanked her. "Bye honey," she said as he left the office. He waved back at her. Jake chuckled to himself about her thinking he and John were brothers. 'If she only knew!' He thought. Jake heard a key in the door and looked up to see John entering the apartment. He checked his watch and it was just after 7:00 PM. "Hi J." Jake said with happiness in his voice. "Hi Babe. Have a nice day?" The two men met in the middle of the room and kissed and hugged. "I missed you J." "I missed you too Babe." John said as he rocked Jack back and forth. "I got a job!" Jake announced excitedly. "Well, it's not a great job but it's a start." "Where? Doing what? Speak!" John demanded excitedly. "Remember that sandwich shop we stopped at Saturday? Well I went there for lunch and just happened to ask if they need anybody. Well, they do, or did. I start training Wednesday at 8:00 AM." "When do you actually work?" "The manager wants me to work Wednesday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. He said that's a pretty good time and I'll get a lot of experience working the lunch crowd." "Only four days week?" "Yeah. Most of their employees are part time, it saves money because they don't have to pay for any benefits." "The manager told you that?" "Hell no! I learned that from one of the other kids who works there. I actually got to watch from behind the counter today." John could tell Jake was really excited about his job. He decided not to get too inquisitive and possibly spoil things. But, it occurred to him that Jake might need health care coverage. "What smells so good?" John asked. "I went to the store today and got a few things. That's a frozen dinner for four, roast beef. Maybe it'll be enough for two hungry guys." "Damn, Jake! You're unbelievable. Here I was dreading calling for Chinese takeout." John grabbed Jake again and hugged and kissed him. "You better stop that. I might get hot enough to bake that dinner in my own oven." John bent over with laughter and they walked into the kitchen to have dinner. Tuesday went as scheduled. John went to work and Jake went to the sandwich shop for training. Jake had dinner ready when John arrived home that evening. Wednesday, John arranged his travel so he would be in the neighborhood of his parent's house around lunchtime. He gave his mother a twenty-minute alert. John parked in the driveway and entered the kitchen by the side door. "Mother? I'm home." John shouted as he entered and saw the kitchen empty. "Hello Johnnie!" Marie said as she walked into the kitchen and hugged her son. "I'm so glad you could come for lunch. I made us sandwiches, if that will be alright." "That's great, Mother." John sat down as his mother poured two glasses of milk. She always made John drink mild when he was home because she believed he wasn't eating properly. At least, this way she could be sure he got some calcium. They began eating. "Mother?" John began the conversation. "The real reason I came by is to see you and to tell you more about Jake. You see, I didn't tell you everything and you know I don't like to keep secrets from you." "Yes dear." That was all Marie needed to say because she knew if she kept quiet, her Johnnie would tell her everything. "Well, Jake is actually living with me. Last Friday night I was feeling lonely and drove down Santa Monica Boulevard to check out the guys standing on the street. I've never picked anybody up; it just helps me realize how good I have it and how lucky I am to have you and Dad who love me. When I saw Jake, something snapped. He looked so pathetic. And, he was so cute. I violated one of my cardinal rules and picked him up. I found out that he had run out of money and that was his first night on the street trying to sell himself. The more time I spent talking with him the more I liked him. I just couldn't turn him back out on the street so I invited him to spend the night and we'd talk Saturday and tried to figure something out. We told you Jake had some problems with his family. When he turned 16, he told his parents he thought he was gay. As I recall, I was 16 when I told you and Dad. That's when they told him he was adopted and it got kind of ugly. His dad told him he could stay until he was 18 years old but then he would have to leave. His 18th birthday was September 25th, just six years and two days after mine. That was almost four weeks ago. Well, I think I like him a lot. He's really a nice kid." John paused, looked at his mother and continued. "Do you think I'm crazy?" "No, Johnnie, I don't think you are crazy. If I am any judge of character, Jake is a good boy. He has manners. He shows respect. I think you did the right thing. Jake loves you, don't you know?" "Oh? What makes you say that? How do you know?" "Sunday, when you were here, I observed him. His eyes followed your every move, just like that little puppy you brought home when you were five years old." "Yeah, Skeets. I still miss him." John said sadly." "And I watched how you two acted together when you were sitting together in the back yard. You'd think you were life long friends. Even your dad noticed." "You're kidding!" John exclaimed in disbelief. "Yes. We talked about it. You want to know what else your dad said?" "I'm almost afraid to ask. But go ahead; what did he say?" "He said he thought you loved Jake too." John sat quietly, analyzing what his mother had told him. Marie noticed the clock and knew her son would have to leave soon. "Johnnie?" John looked into his mother's loving eyes. "Yes, Mother?" "Don't let him get away, Son. I think he's a keeper; if you'll pardon my meddling." "You're my mother. You have a right to meddle." John said with a loving smile as he stood up from the table and gave him mother a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks for the therapy, Mother. We'll see you Sunday. *******
