POOR WHITE TRASH By Scotty Yates Chapter 9 "Congratulations you are officially William Joseph Deveraux." "What? But I...." Brandon interrupted me saying, "Billy Joe, we really need to leave now. We can talk about this later." I looked at Brandon. What in the hell did he think he was doing? He makes a bet with my Pa for me, and now he has had my named changed. This is impossible! OK, so he wants me as his brother or best friend. I don't care what he wants! Where does he get off thinking he can do all this to me? I have some rights. Why change my name to Deveraux? What is wrong with Cantrell? So we are not rich, but at least it was my name. Man, was I ever steaming. And I think Brandon saw it. Brandon grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the office and down the hallway. I was trying to pull away, but admittedly I really didn't want to make a big scene in front of everyone. I still had enough self respect and pride in myself and my family than to cause a scene in public. Brandon kept repeating, "Relax Billy Joe. It is going to be alright. Just relax." I looked at Brandon as he led me out to the car and opened the door. He had no idea what he was doing to me. Piece by piece he was stripping me of everything that had been my life. Why? What did he really want? Why hadn't he asked me? Am I so hard to deal with that he has to force all of this on me? I had always thought of myself as a fairly reasonable and easy going person. I had never gotten into fights. Well, I did deck both Gary and Jason, but they deserved it, didn't they? I was always the peacemaker in my family. I had to be. There was no way the baby of the family was going to win a fight so I learned early in life to try and work things out. OK, I know it was usually to my advantage, but at least we worked it out without fighting. But Brandon wasn't even letting me have any say in the matter. He was just doing it. Looking back on it, I should have questioned how he seemed to have everything all arranged. Red flags should have been popping up all over. But was I watching? NO. I was so mad I couldn't see straight. I had gotten in to the car and he closed the door. He ran around to his side, jumped in, quickly started the engine, and pulled away from the courthouse. Only then did he stop saying, "Relax Billy Joe. Just relax." As he drove out of town and onto the main highway to Pensacola, I was fuming and sputtering. Only when we were on the highway did I get out my first real sentence. "Damn you, Brandon. What in the hell are you trying to do to me? Why? What have I done to you to deserve this kind of treatment? Why do you hate me so much? You have taken everything away from me. Even my identity. Who am I? What am I?" "Billy Joe, Please calm down. I am not trying to hurt you. And I don't hate you!!!" "But Brandon, Why? Why won't you talk to me? Why won't you ask me what I want? Am I so insignificant that nothing I say matters?" "No Billy Joe. You are not insignificant. You are very important to me!" "Well, you sure have a fine way of showing it. I feel like a pawn being moved from here to there without so much as a, 'by your leave'." "Billy Joe, I can explain. Really I can. I am sorry if I am hurting you, but I know when this all gets worked out you will understand. I just hope and pray you will forgive me." "Well, why don't you start by explaining this whole thing to me? Yesterday, I turned 18 with my whole life ahead of me. Then along came that stupid bet with pa. Now you own me. Not only did you take away my freedom, you took away my family. Now you have even taken away my identity. Who is Billy Joe Deveraux? What is he? What plans can I make? Where am I going?" "Billy Joe, Please calm down. I know you don't understand. I am sorry! Please just calm down. I will explain everything. I promise you I will explain it all. Please just relax for a bit longer." I didn't know what to do. I was madder than a little "bantam" hen. (In case you don't know what a "bantam" hen is, I will tell you. On our farm we had chickens and then we had what we called "bantam" chickens. They are very small, about the one third the size of a normal chicken. You never wanted to get one of them riled up, as they would attack anything. I once saw a "bantam" rooster even attack a turkey. Needless to say the turkey lost. These little chickens were quick, agile, and without fear.) I was so mad I couldn't say anything more. I looked over at Brandon and he glanced at me. I don't know what it was, but I saw something in his eyes. Was it fear? Even with that look, his eyes still melted me. I quickly looked away trying to regain my head of steam. But I couldn't. I had vented on him and now all I could do was to turn away and shut up. Why did I react to him so? One look and everything vanished. I would forgive him of anything. Everything he had done seemed to just vanish. Looking back on it all, I should have known what it was. I was in love with Brandon. No matter what he did to me, I loved him. All his faults and actions disappeared as I looked at him. Brandon said, "Billy Joe. I will make a promise to you. Tonight I will tell you everything if you will please just calm down and do what I ask for the rest of the day. I will promise to tell you everything tonight. I don't want to do it now. It is not the right time or place. But I promise I will tell you everything. Please will you trust me that much? I know I have hurt you, but that was not my intention. I have upset you, but please will you wait?" I could hear the pleading in his voice. He didn't even have to put it into words. It was all there in the tone of his voice. When I finally looked at him again I thought I saw tears in his eyes, but I couldn't be sure. Brandon was crying over me. I didn't want him to cry. WOW! That even hurts more than all he had done to me. Again I looked back over at Brandon and said very softly, "Brandon, I trust you. I will wait until tonight. But you have to promise me that before the sun goes down you will tell me everything." "I can't, Billy Joe." "What do you mean, 'you can't'? Brandon, you just said you would tell me. So why can't you make a promise to me? Don't you keep your word? I have kept mine. You even said, 'you were counting on that'." "I am counting on that Billy Joe. But I can't promise to tell you before sundown, because I have a special place and time when I want to tell you. It is after dark. But I will promise you this. If I haven't told you by tomorrow morning, then you are free to go wherever you want with no strings attached. Is that OK?" I looked at Brandon. He really was serious. Why couldn't he tell me before dark? What was so important about the darkness? "OK, Brandon. I will give you until tomorrow morning, but if you haven't told me everything by then I am leaving, even if I have to walk all the way home." "You won't have to walk home. I will take you, if you want to go. Thank you, Billy Joe." Brandon was thanking me! Whoa! That's a new one. Up till now he had basically done nothing but order me around. Uhmmmmmm! I wonder what he is up to now. I turned back in my seat and began watching the scenery as Brandon continued driving south towards Pensacola. I had only been away from our little town when we would take the school bus to travel to our football, baseball, and basketball games. I was always so busy with the crowd of kids, or so tired, that I have never really paid much attention. Now in the warm mid June summer morning, riding in Brandon's car, it took on a new perspective. It really was pretty. I fell into a time of just relaxing and enjoying it all. When we reached Pensacola, Brandon suggested we drive down to Pensacola Beach and have some lunch before going shopping. I readily agreed. For some reason, even though I had eaten a normal breakfast for me, I was now very hungry. We drove down to Via del Luna, found a parking space, and then walked over to Chan's Gulfside Restaurant for lunch. We went downstairs and sat outside. Sitting there eating the delicious fresh seafood platter was fantastic. The Gulf looked beautiful and the food was out of sight. After lunch Brandon took me to numerous shops where he bought me a whole new wardrobe. I mean he didn't stop with a pair of pants or two, and a couple of shirts. He must have bought at least a dozen pairs of pants along with shirts to match. He also bought shorts, socks and shoes. I tried arguing with him, but it did absolutely no good. Of course he made me try on everything and model it for him and the clerks. I really got adept at changing clothes rapidly. In one of the stores he started looking at underwear. I did put my foot down about modeling those. Brandon finally let it pass, but only after saying, "You will just have to do it later." Now, what did he mean by that? I know you're curious. What did I get? Briefs or Boxers? What do you think? Exactly what Brandon wanted of course. Silk Boxers. He kept flashing these credit cards at every store we went into. Not only did he get new clothes for me, he even purchased some items for himself. Not as many clothes as he had bought me, but probably more than I had had previously for my whole wardrobe. Boy did the trunk of his car fill up fast. Even though I didn't like the idea of him buying me all of the clothes, it still was very exciting for me especially since I had rarely ever had any new clothes. I'm not going to tell you about the entire afternoon, I really don't want to bore you. But I must tell you about what happened at Islander's Surf and Sport Shop. The shop has all kinds of sportswear and accessories. Apparently it is the favorite shop for all the locals to purchase their swim wear. When we went into the store, I was amazed at the huge selection. They had hundreds of different kinds of swimsuits. You name it, they had it. When we walked in, this very good looking guy about Brandon's age walked up to us and offered to help us. If I didn't have eyes only for Brandon, well you can guess where my thoughts would have been. Brandon kept acting a little strange. He was always trying to get away from the clerk. Brandon asked what kind of suit I wanted, but having only used old cutoffs for a swimsuit previously, I had no idea. Of course, I usually went skinny dipping so it didn't really matter to me. Only on very rare occasions would I go swimming with a group that had usually consisted of my cousins or family in the river behind our house. Anyway, I finally told Brandon, after looking around, that I liked the long legged boxer style the best. We found some colors that looked good, so I had to model them for Brandon. The clerk kept hovering around always being very polite and helpful. Once he even opened the curtain just as I pulled on the suit. Thankfully, he didn't get to see anything, but I was becoming very suspicious. While I was changing Brandon found some Speedo's he offered to me to try on when I came out in the boxers. When I saw them, I looked at Brandon and then at the clerk. From the look on the clerk's face, I knew he was just waiting for me to try on one of those. I said, "Brandon, I am not going to try those on here. No Way!" "But Billy Joe, you need to get the right size." "NO! Brandon. NO!" "Look Billy Joe, I will make sure it is only you and I around." "No! Brandon, I'm not going to do it." "Come on Billy Joe, I will try on a pair if it will make you more comfortable." There was no way that was going to help anything. That would just make it worse. Seeing Brandon in those would make it impossible to keep myself under control. On one hand, I wanted to see Brandon in them, but on the other hand I knew it would be next to impossible to hide his effect on me. I looked at Brandon and said, "OK, but only if you put some on also. But I don't want anyone else to see me. Where in the world do you plan on me wearing them? I would never wear them out in public. Would you?" "Well I really wouldn't mind you wearing them in public. I think you would look great in them." "Yeah, right!" "No, really. You wear those on the beach and every girl around will be after you." "I don't want every girl after me. Besides if you are there, then they wouldn't even look at me." "Your wrong there, Billy Joe. But if it really makes you uncomfortable, then you can wear them when you are swimming at home. That way there will be no one around but me." Very softly I said, "That's what I'm afraid of. Then what excuse would I have." "What did you say, I didn't hear you." "I said, 'That's what I am afraid of.'" "I'm not going to hurt you Billy Joe, you know that." "Yeah, I know." But in my mind I was thinking 'No he's not going to hurt me, he's just going to be making Little Billy Joe pop up.' Well, after a bit more arguing between us we finally entered separate cubicles to change. I felt very strange coming out. It was like I didn't have any clothes on. I kept thinking about the times I had seen my brothers making love to their wives. That was the only gross thing I could think of that helped me keep myself under control. When I stepped out, there was Brandon standing in front of the mirror. OH MY GOD, was he ever incredible looking. I stood there with my eyes going up and down his body. It was like I was devouring him. Oh WOW! I noticed the clerk had also been staring at him, but when he saw me he turned his full attention towards me. When Brandon looked my way, I quickly smiled, turned around and then started moving back into the cubicle to change. There was no way I could stand there in that Speedo and maintain control. I could feel Little Billy Joe rising all ready. As I moved back into the cubicle. I glanced to my right and saw the clerk still standing there with his mouth open. He winked at me as I quickly pulled the curtain closed. I heard Brandon in a very firm voice say, "Don't you ever do that again!" In a much softer tone I heard him say, "....mine, and Don't you forget it! Do you understand?" "Yes Sir!" Came the voice which I recognized as the clerk. Now what had the clerk done. Had he made a pass at Brandon? I highly suspected from the looks and his attitude that he was gay, but surely he wouldn't make a pass in such a public place. I quickly changed clothes and walked out of the cubicle. The clerk was waiting just outside. He said, "Well, which one do you want?" "I....ahhhh....don't know for sure. I liked these boxer trunks, but I had better wait for Brandon." Just as I finished, out walked Brandon dressed again in his shorts and shirt. He said, "We will take them all, even the ones I tried on." The clerk beamed and said, "Great, come on over and we will ring it up." After Brandon paid for everything, we gathered up the packages and walked out of the store and back to the car. As we were walking, I asked Brandon, "What happened in the store? I heard you tell the clerk, 'Not to ever do that again.'" "I...ummmm...Well, he winked at you and I didn't think you would like it. I've heard how you have dealt with guys that have made a pass at you." "You have?" "Yes." "Who made a pass at me, and what did I do?" "Gary and Jason. And you decked them both with only one punch. I didn't want you to take out that clerk." "I wouldn't have done that." "Why not? You did it to Gary and Jason." "Well, first of all we were in a very public place. I wouldn't have caused a scene. I wouldn't want to embarrass you. Second, there is NO WAY I ever could be interested in him, so why should I degrade myself by brawling. Besides, I over reacted with both Gary and Jason. I have grown up since then." "So are you interested in someone? I...uhmmmm......mean some girl." "No Brandon, I'm not." "I'm glad." "Why?" "Well since I have you where I have wanted you for a very long time, I sure would hate to lose you now." "I'm not going anywhere, Brandon." As we reached the car he said, "I hope not." We put the packages in the car with the rest and then got in. He drove down to Perdido Key, and pulled up and parked in front of a complex of condos. Brandon had explained on the drive we were going to spend the night at a condo owned by his parents. After parking he opened the trunk and we started carrying the various packages into the condo. Even with both of us carrying all we could, it still took us 2 trips to bring everything in. We dumped it all onto the bed in the master bedroom. The condo was a three bedroom unit with 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, and a combination living room and dining area. It was on the gulf side and opened directly onto the beach. The view was outstanding. I said, "Brandon which room do you want me to take. I'll move the clothes you bought for me into that room and organize them." "This room." "But Brandon, why don't you take this room, and I'll take another." "You don't understand, Billy Joe. We both are going to be in here." "But why Brandon? There are two other bedrooms. I can't go anywhere. I don't have any money. And besides I'm not going to run away." "Billy Joe. I have already explained this. I am not letting you out of my site. That's final!" "Brandon, Why?" "Look Billy Joe. I told you I would explain everything tonight. Please wait until then?" I looked at Brandon and knew there was no use in arguing with him. I just wished he would hurry up and explain to me what was going on. "OK, Brandon, but if you don't explain tonight I am going home. And I do mean my home, not yours!" "Billy Joe, I am hoping after I explain everything you will consider my home yours. Because it is your home." "All right, Brandon." "Why don't you change into some of your new clothes and we will go out to dinner." I looked through the clothes and then at Brandon. "Ahhhh! What should I wear?" "Don't worry about it. Just pick out anything you want. You don't have to dress up down here. Besides we will get you some more formal clothes later." "Assuming I'm still around." "You'll still be around, I hope." I looked through the clothes again and picked out a pair of khaki pants and a blue green polo shirt. We had also purchased socks and some casual shoes. I picked these up and walked in the adjoining bathroom and closed the door. I quickly changed clothes and then opened the door into the bedroom. Brandon looked at me and then he whistled. I know it was stupid of me, but I blushed. When I did he just smiled. Then he said, "Why didn't you change out here like I did. I wouldn't have minded." "That's OK, you needed the privacy." "So it was I that needed the privacy?" He said with a wicked little grin on his face. Man, he was driving me nuts with those little innuendos. "Uhmmm! Brandon I need to get a toothbrush." "It's all right, Billy Joe. I picked up yours this morning when I went upstairs. It's right here in my little bag along with mine." He handed me the bag and I headed back into the bathroom. Only when I was standing in the bathroom up to the counter did I realize he had followed me into the bathroom. He walked up and stood right beside me as I got out my toothbrush and the toothpaste. God, he was making me nervous standing so close. I could feel the heat from his body and instantly Little Billy Joe began to rise. After getting out my toothbrush, I handed the bag to Brandon. While I put tooth paste on my brush, Brandon got out his toothbrush. I then started brushing my teeth. It was all I could do to keep my eyes off of Brandon's reflection in the mirror. I just hoped he did not look down at my pants for I knew he was going to get an eye full. I quickly finished and bent over the sink to wash out my mouth in an effort to hide my arousal. I then stood back up, turned away from the cabinet and mirror, and grabbed a towel to dry my face. I then walked out of the bathroom. I made a bee line for the living room and stepped out onto the patio to look at the water. By the time Brandon came out, I had regained control of Little Billy Joe and was enjoying the view. Both of us stood there for awhile and then Brandon said, "Let's go." We walked back out to the car and drove back to Pensacola Beach. When we arrived there, Brandon drove up to the Bayside Grill and parked. For the next 3 hours we had a delicious Creole dinner and talked with each other, relating things that had happened while we were growing up. I had a wonderful time and by the time we left, I felt I knew Brandon a whole lot better. Under that dictatorial exterior, he really was fun guy to be around. I came to the conclusion that 'IF' I could just keep myself physically under control, we could be really great friends. Being Brandon's brother or best friend wouldn't be so bad after all. That 'IF' was going to be the problem. After dinner we drove back to Perdido Key and the condo. Up to this point, Brandon had said nothing about explaining what was going on. When we were inside he suggested we change into swimsuits and go for a swim in the gulf. I grabbed a pair of the boxer trunks and quickly moved into the bathroom again to change. When I came out, there stood Brandon in a similar pair of trunks. Yes, he had that wicked little grin on his face, but he didn't whistle or even make a comment. Did he need to make a comment? No. Did I blush again? What do you think? Of course I did! He grabbed a blanket and some towels from the closet and we walked out onto the beach. I helped Brandon lay out the blanket and then we raced each other out to the water. I won! All I can say is that for the next hour or so I had a blast! When we were tired, Brandon and I walked back up to the blanket, grabbed a towel and dried off. Then we both laid down on the blanket with Brandon on my right. We talked for a little while, and then we both became quiet. I have no idea what Brandon was looking at or thinking, but I know the stars were the prettiest I had ever seen. They seemed to be alive and sparkling, almost as if they knew a secret. We had been lying there for some time without either of us saying a single word. I had closed my eyes and was drifting off to sleep, when I heard a voice very softly say, "Billy Joe." I was thinking what a beautiful voice, when I heard it again say very softly, "Billy Joe." I opened my eyes and as I did the stars in the sky disappeared. I couldn't see anything. All was black. My last conscious thought was 'Where is Brandon?' And then....... PLEASE READ!
