After clearing off the table and doing the dishes we went out onto the front porch. Pa looked over at me and said, "Well, Billy Joe, in a couple of more months you will be going away to college, and I will be all by myself. I don't know how I'm going to be able to handle things by myself. I had thought about asking one of the boys and his wife to move in with me, but I just don't like that idea very well." I looked at pa with tears in my eyes realizing what my leaving was going to mean to him. I was the last of his children to leave home and he would be all alone. My heart broke! I got up out of the chair I was sitting in and walked over and sat down beside him in the swing. I pulled him to me and began stroking him as he had done to me all these years telling him how much I loved him. Well pa started crying and it took us a several minutes to collect ourselves. When we did, I said, "Pa, I love you very much. You have always been there for me. Why don't you just give up the farm and move up to college with me. I'm sure I could find a place for us to live, and with all your abilities you should be able to get a job." I knew how much the farm meant to him, but I truly couldn't see any other alternative. I definitely didn't want to waste my abilities on being a dirt farmer. Don't get me wrong here! I fully appreciated what pa had given me, but I knew in my heart I was going to break out of the mold and not follow my ancestors doing manual labor. That just wasn't me! Pa looked at me with surprise and then said, "Thank you son! I know you love me and to think you want me to go with you makes my heart glad, but I could never leave the farm. No! You will go to college in the fall, and I'm sure you will make a great success of yourself. I have always encouraged you in your education. You are so much like your mother. You can do so much better than what me and the boys have done." Then he said, "Actually I think I have a really good idea to take care of the situation. I have been thinking about it a lot recently and I just want to get your opinion before I do it. I don't want to hurt you in any way." Then he said, "Billy Joe what do you think of Gloria Sue Johnson? Would you be unhappy if I was to marry her? All I could do was sputter. I was in shock. Gloria Sue Johnson, Gary Johnson's mom - remember him. Oh my God! No Way! Well actually way! There really wasn't anything wrong with Mrs. Johnson. She was in fact kind of pretty for a 44 year old woman. That's not to young for a 52 year old man like pa. Gary's pa, her husband, had been killed in a farming accident a little over a year ago. Since then my brothers and there families along with pa and I had been helping Mrs. Johnson and her kids in keeping the place going. Gary was still at home, one of the very few of the poor white trash school kids that hadn't married by the time they were 18, along with his 4 younger brothers. But could she be my mother? I don't think so! I had never had a real mom in all my life. What about sleeping with the boys? What about sleeping with Gary? Could I handle that after what he said to me? I finally looked at pa after realizing he was waiting for some sort of response from me. I said, "When were you thinking about getting married?" In my mind I was hoping for the words, August 31st, to come popping out of his mouth as I had to be leaving for school on September 1 st that is assuming I went to Florida State. But no such luck! He said, "Well I have already talked to Mrs. Johnson and we kind of would like to make it on June 17th, if that is alright with you? I know you and Gary will have graduated by then and your birthday is on June 15th. I would like to make it something special for you since it will probably be your last birthday at home." What could I say? Here was pa willing to do whatever I wanted. Could I sit there and be selfish or do what would be best for him? Well I really had no alternative! I said, "June 17th will be fine with me." You really need to know that I had absolutely no suspicion what was going on between pa and Mrs. Johnson. We talked a little more about it, actually a lot more. It was decided that Gary and the two oldest of his younger brothers would sleep in the old girls room and I would have to share my room with the other two. At least this was the arrangement I worked out with pa. There was no way I wanted to share a room with Gary. He was a nice enough guy, but I just knew he would try something with me. I knew there was no way that was going to happen. I felt I could better control the two youngest brothers. The next month went along very smoothly with preparations for my graduation, my birthday, pa's wedding, and the joining of our two households. At school Gary would come up to me and talk to me about how great it would be for the two of us to share a room. I suspected he had an ulterior motive in mind, but it surely wasn't what I wanted. I made sure I didn't let on what my plan for the sleeping arrangements were, because I didn't want him to have a chance to work on his ma. I told pa to keep quite about it, figuring when they moved in we could just make the assignments then. My graduation finally arrived, which I mentioned above. The next Thursday was my birthday and then pa was to be married to Mrs. Johnson on Saturday. Her and her family were supposed to move in on Sunday. Pa and I had made arrangements for me to stay over night Saturday with my brother Jerry and his wife. Pa and Mrs. Johnson were going to have Saturday night as a sort of honeymoon with me and her kids to move back into the house on Sunday afternoon. At least they were supposed to get one night alone. To get ready for everything, pa and I really went to work sprucing up the place. Man the place was shining! We cleaned up all the bedrooms, the bathroom, kitchen and living room. We even put on a fresh coat of white wash on the house. We cleaned up the yard and got rid of some old junk vehicles which were scattered about. I had never seen our place look so nice. Pa was really going all out to impress Mrs. Johnson. I realized I hadn't known how much pa missed the companionship of a woman. Oh well, for me it was only 3 months and then I would be gone. I figured I could tolerate Gary and his brothers for that long. Surely nothing could happen especially with pa around. Right? For my birthday Pa planned for us to go out to local restaurant and then over to the pool hall where I had never been before. When you turned eighteen you could play pool, but you still couldn't drink. I didn't care about the drinking, I just wanted to see pa play pool as I knew he had been the county champion for 15 years running. I was hoping I might even get a chance to play him. This was to be an exciting time for me. All of my brothers and even Jason my nephew were to be there. Even Gary was invited. After pa and I had supper of pork chops with mashed potatoes and gravy and then a piece of blackberry pie for desert we headed over to the pool hall. By the way if you ever go to that restaurant don't get the blackberry pie. Come on over to my house and I'll treat you. Actually don't even go there to eat. I can cook ten times better and my blackberry pie is out of sight. Hey, when you get dumped on with all the cooking for two growing men you learn to cook fast!! and good!! When we arrived in the pool hall at about 7:00 p.m. everybody was already there. And everyone was slapping me on the back wishing me a Happy Birthday!!! I just knew I was going to be black and blue after that night. They even teased me about setting the record for the going the longest without finding a wife. I know some of the comments even indirectly referenced the fact that I was still a virgin (which I was in every way). I attempted to make believable comments to the incorrectness of those statements, but I really don't think I was very successful. It was the most fun I had had in a long time. The pool tables were all being used when we first arrived, so pa and I just hung around talking to all my brothers. When a table was finally open, pa took out his pool stick and began to warm up. Boy from his warm up shots I could tell he was really good. He then offered to let me play him which as you can imagine was great. I didn't do so hot being my first time, but still thought it was great fun. After playing a round with me, he then started playing with the other men there. Some of them were really good and tried to give pa a run for his money (generally they played for a buck a game). But no one actually came close to beating him. During this time I was just standing around or sitting at a table enjoying everything and drinking a coke. It was so awesome to hang out with the men. While I was sitting at the table, Gary came up and sat down. He said, "Hi Billy Joe, Happy Birthday." "Hi. Thanks, Gary." "Are you ready for the big day on Saturday?" "Oh Yeah! Everything is in great shape. All I have to do tomorrow is do the last minute cleaning and my laundry, and I'll be ready. (Yeah, I did my own and pa's laundry. Who did you think did it? THE MAID!!! Told you I would make a great wife for someone! Ha! Ha!) "I can't wait until we get moved in. It is going to be a lot of gun being your brother and around you. Uhhh.....By the way have you decided on where you are going to school?" "Yeah, It will be a lot of fun." Whose he kidding? For him maybe, but surely not for me. "No, I'm still trying to decide." "I hope you decide on Florida State. That's where I'm going. Maybe we could even be roommates?" NO COTTON PICKIN WAY!!!! Florida State is out for sure now. "Uh...hh... well I guess it would be alright, that is if I decide to go there." I am such a wimp. "Billy Joe. Can I uh..hhh... ask you something? "Sure Gary." "Do you remember when you punched me and knocked me down when we were younger?" "Uhh...Yeah." "Do you remember why?" "Yeah." In a very halting manner he said, "Well, Billy Joe, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for saying what I did. I think you the greatest! You have always been by best friend and I just wanted to be close to you. I know you don't like me now because of it, but I want you to know I would do anything for you." As he said this I had turned and looked at his face. What was that glow in his eyes? Surely he wasn't in love with me! Nahhhh. Couldn't be! "Gary, it's alright. I over reacted and should have controlled my temper better." "No, Billy Joe. It was all my fault. I had no right to say the things I did. I had heard people talking about your brothers and sisters and assumed you were like them. I'm really sorry. I should have known better. You are to good. The only person you will ever have sex with will be someone you love. That's just the way you are. Every girl in school and even a some of the guys would give their eye teeth to go to bed with you. Me Included!!" All I could do was stare at him and try to absorb what he had just said. "I'm sorry if what I said offends you, but it's true! You are absolutely awesome! Look, Billy Joe. I know this probably isn't the time to say this, but I'm sure this is going to be my only opportunity before the wedding day to say something you need to know. That way if you want, then I want move in with my ma. I know I'm taking a big chance here, but uhhh.....hhhh Billy Joe you are the hottest looking guy I've ever seen. I know I'm not really as good looking as you, but I love you!!! I always have." As he said this tears filled his eyes. I couldn't believe it! Gary said he loved me! Whoa!! Now what do I do? I looked at Gary and saw a handsome young man, 5' 11" tall, 170 lbs, blue eyes, and brown hair. I never realized until just that moment how good looking he had become. I just hadn't noticed before! How do you like this turn of events? Were you expecting this? I bet you were! You thought you had it all figured out, didn't you? Told you I was sneaky! Hey! I have to keep you interest, don't I? Please don lose interest now, the best is yet to come!
