Well yeah, I could accept him as a friend, but no way was I in love with him. Did I want to hurt him again? No! He had always been there as a friend to me even after I had distanced myself from everyone. "Oh Gary, I don't know what to say!" "Billy Joe, all I want to know is do you think you could ever like me? That's all I'm asking for?" "Gary, Of course I like you. Even after what you said, I have never hated you. But....I don't love you and I don't think I ever could. That's not to say your not good looking, but I really don't look at you in that way. I'm really sorry!" "Why couldn't you love me? I've seen you check out the guys occasionally, and I would bet my life your just like me. Is there someone else?" "Gary........................... Yes, there is." Gary looked at me for a very long time without saying anything. Then he said, "Billy Joe. All I want is for you to be happy. I'm not even going to ask who it is, but if you ever change your mind or need me in any way, I'll be there waiting for you." With tears welling up in my eyes I said, "Thanks Gary, but I'm not going to change my mind or my heart. But I really do appreciate what you have said. I'm sorry we can't be more than friends." "Remember , If you ever need me, just call." "Thanks Gary." Realizing how hard this had been for him I said, "Gary, I know this could be difficult for you based on what you just said, but I would still like to be your friend and it would be alright with me for you to move in with your family. Nothing has to change between us. I'd really like for you to be my friend......and brother." A big grin came across his face and then he said, "Thanks. I think I can handle it." As he was saying this Jason walked up and brought me another coke. Gary said, "Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom" and left the table. Jason said, "What was that all about? It looked pretty serious there for a minute." "Oh nothing, Jason. We were just renewing our friendship and talking abut what a great time we were going to have when he and his brothers move in on Sunday." So I lied a little. Jerry came over and sat down with Jason and I. We talked about the wedding and how happy pa seemed to. I looked at the clock and realized we had been there for an hour an a half. At precisely 8:30 p.m. Brandon walked in! I couldn't believe it! He was wearing a pair of tight fitting blue jeans, a t-shirt, and some boots. God did he ever look hot! Thankfully I was sitting down at a table or I'm sure I would have fainted. No not as a result of what he was wearing, but what was he doing there? I had never heard about any of the Deveraux's going to the pool hall. That was only for us poor white trash, wasn't it? From the looks on the faces of the other people, they appeared to be as shocked as I, although I think they didn't stare quite as much as I did. He walked back to where I was sitting next to the pool table pa was playing on. When he walked up, the first words out of his mouth were, "Hi Billy Joe, Happy Birthday! May I sit down?" He knows my birthday. This can't be real! What's going on here? Never before had he done anything like that. From glances around the room, I knew this was something extremely unusual for the rest of the people as well. Thankfully I sounded normal as I said, "Hi Brandon. Sure. And thank you." I wanted to say 'what are you doing here?' But I didn't. He sat down at the table next to me where pa and then Gary had been sitting earlier, and said, "So how does it feel being 18 and a graduate now?" What is he doing? Why is he acting like we are friends? This is the most he has spoken to me in my entire life! What's up? These questions resounded through my head, but all I could say was, "It's great! I can't wait until the fall when I'll be able to go away to college." "Which college have you decided to attend since you had four to choose from?" Momentarily, I thought how did he know that and then I remembered that it had been announced at my graduation that I had been accepted at four different schools. "I haven't made my decision yet. For some reason I am finding it difficult to decide between my choices. They all have certain advantages." "I was hoping you would decide on Florida State. That way I might get to see you more often." Wait a God Damn minute! What's that mean? Why would he want to see me? It's not like we run in the same circles? More Often? He has been coming by our place almost once a week for the past 13 years. He wants to see me more often than that? NO WAY! Who's he kidding? But I said, "That would be nice Brandon, What are you taking at State?" "Well, I'm studying law. Some day I want to be a lawyer with my own firm." I'm sure he will be, he has all the right connections. "That's strange, I was leaning in that direction myself, but I'll probably end up just working for some firm if I make it." "Billy Joe with your abilities you'll be a partner in no time." We both just laughed like we were old friends. It was really nice to just talk to him like a friend. For some reason I felt comfortable just talking with him. I couldn't believe he was doing this. Everyone around us was watching us like hawks. I couldn't figure out why Brandon was doing this, but I knew everyone, myself included, was wondering what was going on and how in the world did I know Brandon? About this time pa walked up and said, "Hi Mr. Deveraux, how are you?" "I'm fine, but please don't call me that. Mr. Deveraux is my father. Just call me Brandon." "Sure. No Problem, Brandon." My pa seemed somewhat nervous about it, but then he said, "Would you like to play a game of pool." I figured pa might be nervous having Brandon there, but he obviously wasn't going to miss the chance of beating him in a game of pool. Brandon said, "Hey that sounds like fun. I've only played a few times. We have a table in the dorm, but I don't get much free time to play." As someone handed him a pool stick, I thought this can't be happening. Brandon here and playing pool with my pa. NO WAY! As Brandon got up he looked at me and said, "Do you think I should?" "Sure, go ahead. He can't do anything but beat you." And I laughed. So did Brandon, but the he said, "Don't run off. I would like you to watch me. Maybe you will give me luck. Something tells me I'm going to need it." I laughed. Whoa! Did Brandon really say that? He couldn't have! I couldn't believe this was happening! "Yeah. Your definitely going to need it." Pa casually said, "We usually play for a buck a game, but since this is your first time here, we'll skip it." "NO WAY! I want to be treated like everybody else, but I've only got some 20's on me. Can we play for that instead?" Pa looked stunned, but quickly regained his composure and said, "Sure." This was totally unreal! Playing pool with Brandon and for 20 bucks a game! I quickly said, "Brandon, my pa is pretty good, what if you lose?" "No Problem. I've got plenty more!" "OK. Your money!" They began playing the game and everyone was quietly watching them. I want give you all the comments made during the match, but let's just say it was the normal teasing comments made by each party. I on the other hand was getting some excellent views of Brandon's tight butt as he bent over to take his shots. It sure seemed to me he was taking a lot of shots which would give me the best view. I was very glad I was sitting down and the table was covering my lap. You could tell Brandon was very competitive, but he definitely wasn't good at pool. Pa on the other hand was playing great. The game was over in just a few minutes with the expected winner, pa. When the game was over Brandon said, "Can we try one more game, I was only getting warmed up?" It was obvious he was going to need a lot of warming up to beat pa. Pa said, "Sure, if you like, but I really feel bad taking your money." "Don't worry about it! I like to spend money. It's fun. Why don't we make it for a 100 bucks this time? Makes it more interesting!" Everyone around the room gasped including both pa and I. Pa looked around at my brothers and I. It was obvious he was looking for some advice. I said, "Pa if he wants to do it, it's his money." Secretly, I didn't want him to do it for two reasons. One I hated to see Brandon lose, and two, if pa would actually lose how would we ever pay him that much. Even with pa's winnings so far, including Brandon's 20 bucks he had just won, he had only about $45 on him. Pa looked at Brandon and said, "Well it's fine with me, but I don't have but about $45 on me right now. If I lost I would have to get you the rest." "That's Ok. I know you stand on your word of honor." Well they proceeded to play their second game, again with the expected results of Brandon losing. Everyone was clapping and shouting as Brandon handed over the $100 at the end. Even Brandon was laughing. I was astonished. Brandon had just dropped 120 bucks to my pa within 20 minutes and it didn't seem to phase him. WOW, that money was sure going to help us out a lot! As they were laughing and patting each other on the back I heard Brandon say, "Could we play one more game? I'd sure like to catch up." What's the matter with him? Surely he doesn't like getting beaten like that in front of this crowd! Pa just looked at Brandon and said, "Sure it's your money". With a big grin on his face." Brandon said, "I would really like to make this a little more interesting this time." I thought, 'NOW WHAT?' How can it be more interesting? Damn! He's bound to lose again! He said, "Mr. Cantrell, I understand you are getting married on Saturday and will be taking over the responsibility of both your place and the Johnson farm (Actually they both belonged to his family, remember we were only the tenants). That is a total of over 400 acres. How about I put the ownership of those two properties on the table. You win and they are yours!" Everyone let out an audible gasp. I had just taken a drink of coke, and needless to say it came flying out of my mouth as I choked on it. Brandon came over and patted me on the back while I grabbed a napkin to clean myself and the table up. With his hand still resting on my back, I looked up at him and all I could see was that fiery look in his eyes. Yeah, it was still there after all these years. I said, "Your kidding!" He said, "No." Pa looked at Brandon and then at me. I knew pa had always dreamed of owning his own land, and here was his golden opportunity. But I also knew we had nothing that would even remotely match Brandon's anti in value. Man we were poor white trash. We owned nothing except the clothes on our backs, some cheap furniture, and some old farming equipment. What could pa put up? Pa said, "I'm sorry I couldn't do that. I don't have anything worth that much to put up." "Yes, you do!" Everybody, and I do mean everybody, looked at Brandon. This kid was crazy! We owned nothing and everyone knew it. Pa looked at Brandon and said, "What?" Brandon looked at pa and then down at me and said, "Billy Joe." OK! I want to hear from everyone out there who is reading this. I know you must have fallen off your chairs by now. Did you anticipate this? Do you like my cliff hanger? Is Brandon going to win? I'm sorry, your just going to have to wait until next time to find out.
