I had five children who would need my attention and I had to be strong from them. I had a mill to run with no help from the family. I wish that I could have spent the whole day in the physical fitness room building muscles getting my strength back but I had to go the office. Jack would take me in each day and return each evening to pick me up and take me home. One day my accountant, his assistant, maintenance man, and floor supervisor, just walked off the job and quite. They did not bother giving a reason. Just what I needed! A little more pressure. I found out from some of other the employees that they were probably stealing from the company. Very few of the workers could get along with them and were getting ready to quit but they had beaten them to the punch. I stopped all operations and called a general meeting of all the employees. They were all expected to be there or lose their job. I told them what had happened and offered their jobs to anyone who was qualified for those positions. One of the long time employees said that she had been a supervisor before coming to work for me. "Clara, would you like the position of floor supervisor? I know you could handle the job. You have been here long enough to know the company inside and out." "Herb, I don't think that I would take the job permanently. I am planning to retire about Christmas time. I will take the position until you find someone for the job. You and I can work with that person in training. Then color me gone!" "Thanks, Clara. You are a life saver! Now is there anyone who would like to apply for any of the jobs? In that case, I will call the employment office and Craig's List and see if we can find anyone." "Herb, I have some books that you had better take a look at. I think you'll be needing these to support your case against the culprits, who ran out on you. I overheard them talking and it appears that they kept two sets of books. I don't know why any one would be so dumb and keep records that could convict them of a crime. I saw them yesterday throw these in the garbage. I was able to retrieve them before the garbage trucks came. All I can say is they deserve `the dumbest crook award of the year!" Duane said laughing. "Thanks, Duane, I really don't know what we are looking at but I agree with you that these may be very important later on. My lawyers and I will look at them after the meeting. If any of you have anything else to share with me, just leave it on the table out side my office if you want to remain anonymous. If not, just come into the office. Again I would like to thank all of you for coming. I want to assure you that none of your jobs are in jeopardy and that this company will continues running. So let's go to the break room and get some refreshments. I sent my driver out to get `goodies'. I know he is back because I just saw him walk past the door." My lawyers and I decided that we had enough evidence to file charges against the four employees who just walked out and left me holding an empty bag. We made a trip to the district attorney's office and she agreed that we had enough to file embezzlement against all four men and a warrant for their arrest was issued . She had all their assets frozen. The police had no trouble finding the men. They were arrested and would go before a judge for arraignment. A search warrant was issued so the police could search all of their homes and computers. The police found lots of evidence enough to convict all four men. Maybe, just maybe, I would be able to recover my money or least part of it.*****Within two weeks, I had all the positions filled and operations were back to normal. I now had more time to spend in the exercise room and with the aide of a walker, I could now walk three blocks. I walked every day, increasing the distance a little each day. I still had to use the walker but at least I could move under my own power and didn't need any assistance. If I had to use a walker forever, so be it. A walker is a lot better than being in a wheelchair and paralyzed from the waist down. A judge signed the paper work that allowed me to adopt the children. He suggested that I might want to hire a full time ,live-in Nanny . I agreed and started my search. Jack and Marge were a great help in the selection. We finally found a girl, Liz, that we all liked. Liz was a young woman of 24 and was living on the streets. She had lost all her family in a car accident and was too old to move in with relatives. The family was very poor and didn't have anything to leave Liz so she had no choice but live in her old car. A policeman, a friend of mine, actually arrested her and brought her to my place for an interview. He checked her background and found no incriminating evidence. Liz was extremely glad to get the job and have a roof over her head and food for her body. The kids fell in love with her at once. Jack, Marge and I were not far behind. Liz was very accomplished pianist and had a beautiful singing voice. I had a very large piano that I received from my mother. Liz started music lessons for all the kids. The Younger ones only got singing lessons. The two older ones were getting piano lessons and before long I could recognize Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Mary had a little lamb, and several more. Jack, Marge and I got singing lessons, which all three of us really needed. Our evenings were now spent around the piano. We actually became quite good and even sang as a family in church. Lisa even had a solo part one Sunday. Liz became the church organist and choir director. The kids made sure that every one knew that Liz was their nanny.Slowly, I continued to make improvements in my walking. I was able go get rid of the walker and only used a cane now mostly for balance and to keep from falling.*****Mark and Rachel fell in love and got married. They moved into a place of their own. I had seen this coming. Sure, It was hard to let him go but I knew that someday this would happen. We had our fun but each of us knew that we wouldn't ever be a couple. We parted on good terms and they still come to visit quite often. Joel and Lisa started school and are in separate rooms. Marge and Jack volunteered as classroom helpers, twice a week and dearly loved doing it. For a couple who never had any grandchildren, they are making up for lost time. I don't know who is having more fun, the kids or Marge and Jack. Liz and I have actually have been going out on formal dates. I think the kids are coming very close to having a new mother. We have decided not to rush things but we are actually more than just friends. Marge and Jack have been getting real suspicious and have asked when the big event is going to take place. I think that Liz will get a diamond on her birthday which will be in two more months. Life starts over!
