Book Two Chapter 5 About noon on the third day out of Fiji Tonga slowly rose out of the sea to our south. The afternoon heat haze made the green hills look blue. The crew was all in Sandpiper shorts, sans t-shirts in the broiling heat. The sea was a sheet of glass and the only breeze was the wind coming over the coaming. Siam and Jer were both near the radar, Siam instructing Jer on how it works. "Multiple contacts, all across the front. Looks like fishing or small boats. Not many moving." Siam sang out. "Better slow us down Rad." Jake said. The engine room on Sandpiper was so well insulated and the big diesel muffled that you hardly noticed it forward of the engines spaces. You did notice it when it wasn't running. As soon as Rad slowed Sandpiper, that big diesel with a bang quit. The red light came on my repeater. Without power Sandpiper abruptly slowed, smacking down onto the water. Rad switched to the auxiliary power plant and it smoothed out for about thirty seconds and then it quit. Sandpiper ran on for about 200 feet and came to a full stop. We were dead in the water. I was totally speechless. This had never happened aboard Sandpiper before. "What he hell is going on down there?" Jake said in the intercom. "Don't know. Give us a few minutes." Came back. I looked up at our flag. It hung limp. Now the heat really showed itself. That few moments turned into minutes as we just sat like a bug on a sheet of glass. Jake was getting frustrated and as he turned to head down to the engine room Allan walked out onto the bridge. "Contaminated diesel fuel. Looks like a third of our tanks are nothing but sea water." "How the hell did that happen?" "I think when we fueled from that barge in Fiji we got more sea water than fuel. Some of those old barges don't purge their tanks before they are refilled." "Shit. What are you doing?" "Harold and Randy are rigging a fuel line from the top of the number one tank. We should have auxiliary power in about half an hour. Main Engine is off line until we can purge every thing. We'll need to get along side and drain both tanks as well." "Okay Allan, speed it up if you can." "Will do Sir." Allan left the bridge. "Jake, one of those blips just went to high speed and is coming this way." Siam said. "Range 10000, speed 16 knots." It dawned on me that with only our battery backup system we were pretty well defenseless. We couldn't raise our 76 on battery power." "Well this close to Tonga must be a patrol vessel." Jake said. Jake trained the big naval glasses on it. "Looks like a Pacific Class Patrol boat. They were built by Australia. Should be friendly." That proved not only to be the case, but they also knew who we were. The patrol vessel swung in a wide arc and idled up beside us on the port side about 25 yards. "Ahoy Sandpiper, do you require assistance?" "Maybe, we have contaminated diesel. We are trying to rig our auxiliary engine with a line from our tanks. Can you stand by?" "Very well Sandpiper. We will stand by." "God I would hate to be towed into our first visit in my new status." I said. "Definitely make people think and talk." Jake laughed. "You can bet your bottom dollar they are talking to their HQ." "Ed there is not much we can do about that. We'll just have to see what develops." It seemed like hours in the heat, but finally the green light of the auxiliary power unit came on. "You got power Jake, max 15 knots." Allan said. Jake pulled our foils. "Navy we have limited power now, 15 knots max." "Roger Sandpiper, follow us in please." The patrol boat took station about 200 yards ahead of us and led the way into the port. For the next hour and a half we got closer to Tonga. "I suppose I better change. Bound to be some kind of reception waiting for us." I went down to my Stateroom and had a cool shower. Put on the lightest weight slacks I had and a loose fitting shirt. There was no way I was wearing a tie or jacket in this heat. Grabbed a cold beer on my way back up to the bridge. By the time I got back to the bridge we were inside the lagoon at the Capitol Nukualofa. It was a very busy place. Jake was barely making steerage as we threaded our way into the lagoon. The Navy skipper indicated a long dock where we should tie up. Before I could say anything Jake yelled through a bullhorn. "You keep those dirty tugs away from Sandpiper!" I don't know when the habit started, but every time we docked at a new port or marina we always docked with Sandpiper heading out. Jake spun the wheel on Sandpiper and applied a little power. Her water jets spun Sandpiper in a 180 degree circle. He then used power to nudge Sandpiper into the dock. Handlers on the dock were quick to tie us off. I watched as some of my crew lowered the gangplank. Sandpiper was almost level with the dock now, but I knew that would change with the tides. When I looked at the dock, there was a single vehicle waiting. A man about 6 foot, in tan slacks, an open shirt and wide brimmed white hat waited. Guess I wasn't over or under dressed. The crew were doing what they usually did when we docked. The awning was going up over the stern deck and bow. I knew the air conditioning would be going full blast below decks too. I saw the man walking toward our gangplank. I headed down to the lounge. A few minutes later the man walked into the lounge. "Welcome to Tonga Mr. Ambassador. I'm Thomas Blinks, Consul General for the United States. Micronesia does all their business through our consulate." "Thank you. If you don't mind it's just Ed. Micronesia as far as I know has no treaty obligations to discuss and nothing pending so I am here on holiday only." "Very good, Tom will do as well." I offered him a cold beer and he accepted. We sat down. "So had a bit of a problem coming here I understand." "Yes, it appears we have contaminated fuel. Shut us down. Glad we were so close." "Do you need any specific help? I am at your Service Sir." "Well most of the work can be done by my crew, but we will need a sump truck to pump out our fuel tanks and then a tanker to refill them." "Very well, I'll arrange for both as soon as I get back to my office. Sandpiper is now under the protection of the Maritime forces of Tonga. You and your crew are welcome to travel anywhere. Tonga is a very nice place to visit. There are still a few archaic laws on the books, especially pertaining to your particular lifestyle, but I doubt any of you will have problems. Transportation will be supplied by the US Consulate." "Is it okay if I unload my own Jeep?" "Very much so. Be sure to have your diplomatic plates on." After more small talk, he excused himself and left. Siam came in almost as soon as he was out the door. He grabbed two fresh beers and sat on my lap. "He was pretty hot looking, but I think he is straight." I just chuckled. My jeep had been fitted with the plates. They had come in the package Gio had sent me. Randy unloaded it onto the dock. I saw it also had a small Gideon of the flag on Micronesia on the right front of the Jeep. Our first order of business was getting Sandpiper repaired and ready for sea. Good as his word, at 0800 the next morning a big sump truck pulled up on the dock next to Sandpiper. It took almost two hours to set all the hoses before they even started pumping. From the dirt and smell, diesel wasn't its usual haul. The real dirty job came next. The two smallest crew, Siam and Rad, climbed inside the tanks to clean up the accumulated crude on the bottom of the tank. The port tank was pretty clean, but it had replaced on our last refit after getting holed. The starboard tank had crude from when she had been built. That cleaning took an entire day. Both in tank filters were changed as well. While Randy supervised the cleaning of the tanks, Alan and Harold had stripped out the fuel lines to clean. They would take another three days to finish. Allan proved to be a very valuable asset. He wouldn't even allow the tanker to refill our tanks until he had checked the fuel for water pollution. Satisfied we got a full load of diesel. Only after the engine was purring like a kitten did I allow the crew to begin their holiday here. Andy and Juan along with Jerry and Sal took off to hit the markets. They were always interested in local foods and supplies. I had a short meeting with everyone before any one left. I admonished them to behave. Tonga had some very archaic laws pertaining to homosexuality. Also to carry their passports with the Diplomatic insert. Making sure everyone had money to spend sent off on an unsuspecting Tonga. Sandpiper looked like a turned over ant hill as everyone headed a different direction. I was left with my four boys. I changed back into shorts and t-shirt with deck shoes. It was just too damned hot for long pants. There was a distinct advantage to having Diplomatic plates and that little flag on the fender. No matter where we stopped, even just to get a cold drink at one of the hundreds of small shops and kiosks, a policeman seemed to materialize out of thin air when ever we left the Jeep. Most gave us a casual salute and stood by the Jeep until we returned to it. We got to what looked like the main market of the capitol. It was just along street, shared by pedestrians and vehicles. There seemed to be no laws governing where you drive. I decided to park and walk through the market. First stop was a money changer. One US dollar was about 1.7 Tongan cash. The boys each exchanged about 200 dollars US. It left them with a wad of cash enough to choke a horse. I told the boys to remember where the Jeep was before we headed into the very busy market street. WE wandered the market. The boys bargained hard for the few trinkets and souvenirs they bought. The sights, sounds and smell were overpowering at times, but we did have fun. Near the end of the market area was a big round about traffic circle. In the center were several Kiosks and about three dozen tables with big umbrellas. We headed there to get a cool drink and get some shade. As we entered the area I saw someone I recognized and steered for his table. He stood as I came up. "Good morning Ed. Out enjoying the city?" "Yes thank you." "ED this is Sir James Beaton, British Council General to Tonga." "How do you do Sir James?" "Please just James." I introduced my four young men. "Must keep you very busy." He said with a twinkle in his eye. "Yes well I have to use a switch sometimes to keep them in line." "That I very much doubt. Enjoying it here boys?" "Yes sir." They chorused. We sat and talked while sipping on a cold tall fruit drink. Most of the chat was about the problems with investments on the Island. Foreigners could not own property on Tonga, so if you wanted to invest and build, you would have to find a land owner willing to lease. Then building had to be done by local labor and 95 percent of the staff of any hotel had to local as well. Made it very difficult to build say a good resort on the Island. "Don't take offense Ed, but I very much doubt you could even get a permit to own and operate a resort here considering the types of hotels and resorts you now own and operate." "It might surprise you to know James that we don't turn down reservations from anyone, especially on Fiji. My other Resorts are not advertised in any normal travel magazine so I don't have problems." The Kingdom of Tonga was very friendly to all tourists except Gays. That was different than most Islands in the South Pacific. Homosexuality or more likely bi-sexuality was common, primarily because of century's old traditions and rules. Girls under the age of majority, although very low in most islands, were not allowed to have sexual relations with males. So males used each other. Gio had told me a lot of the history and reasons. I am very sure my reception here would have been very different if I had not been Micronesia's Ambassador at large. I didn't say that to James or Tom. WE excused ourselves after about an hour and headed back to my Jeep. Two policemen were waiting and one asked for my passport. After he just saluted and stood back. "Can we find a beach Ed?" "Sure bud." I pulled out a map and signaled over one of the policemen. "Can you point me in the direction of the beach?" "Yes Sir. There are many fine beaches, although the best are only accessible at low tide. Take this road back to Cook Highway. It is the main road around the Island. The Best beaches are close to the North end." "Thank you very much." Getting out of Market Street I figured would be hardest part, but the two policemen stopped traffic and indicated for me to make a U turn. Quick as a wink we were on our way. Finding Cook Highway was easy. It wasn't what I would call a highway. Just paved two lane road meandering close to the ocean. Like most Islands in the South Pacific there were two distinct classes of people. The rich and poor with no middle class. Most of those poor we saw lived in some of the hundreds of houses we saw dotting the hills along the highway. Most had a small plot of land that they grew fruits, vegetables or spices. Most of the traffic on the so called highway was heading south. We passed several fruit stands. "Can we stop and get some fruit Ed?" Siam asked. Figures I thought food was almost always on their minds. Siam once told me they liked to keep their energy levels high. High energy so they could tag team me later. I pulled up past a small fruit stand and we all piled out. A small boy, that looked no older than 10 or 11 walked out from behind it with a huge smile. He had on worn but clean pair of cutoffs and no t-shirt. We looked at the fruit. Siam picked up a huge cantaloupe. "You going to eat that all your self love?" "No, I figured I'd get him to cut it up." He brandished the cantaloupe at the young boy. He said something none of us understood. Siam set the melon down and pulled out his wad of bills. The boys eyes got real big, but just pulled out a one and then smiled. Siam put away the wad and picked up the melon. He indicated he wanted it cut into five. The boy nodded. He laid a sheet of old newspaper on the bench and then deftly cut the melon into five fairly equal parts. He cleaned out the seeds and handed the paper back to Siam. Siam handed the melon pieces to Rad and pulled out his wad. The young boy just shook his head no. Siam was having none of that. He pulled out a hundred and shoved it into the boy's hand. The boy looked at the bill and then yelled something. A much older women walked out of the small shack with another boy of about the same age in tow. She talked to our boy for a bit and then took the bill and brandished it to Siam. "What you want from Erick you pay so much money?" "I didn't want anything. I just gave it to him to thank him for cutting up the melon." "Too much. How he going to use?" Then it dawned on me. A hundred denomination note might be hard for her to spend. It was also probably more money than they made in a month. I pulled out my money and with a mixture of 20's, 10's and 5's traded her for the hundred. She told the boy to go get something from the house. He came back with two gallon jugs of what looked like just clean water. I had seen similar jugs in the market. I knew they were not filled with water, but pure fruit alcohol. The young boy handed me both jugs. "That better equal now." She smiled. Then she pulled out five glasses and filled them with lemonade. "Go good with lemonade." She smiled. Too late for my boys, they had downed the lemonade. "What's that stuff Ed?" "Moonshine." I said. "What's moonshine?" Rad asked. I opened the jug and poured a small amount into all their glasses. The boys just shot it back. The reaction was instantaneous. All grabbed their throats and gagged and chocked. The lady and boys burst into a fit of laughter and giggles. After another glass of lemonade. "What is that stuff? It burned like crazy." Temin said. "That boy was pure fruit alcohol. Probably close to 180 proof. You could probably use it as fuel for the Jeep." I laughed. The lady poured a small amount into my glass and hers and filled it with lemonade. It did add a bite to the lemonade. That sort of broke the ice with her and we talked for a while. The boys we found out were actually 16 and 14. Erick was the oldest. Both were related only on their mother's side. They had different fathers. There was no stigma attached to birth out of wedlock on the Island. I took it that she was in reality a hooker by trade, but didn't say anything. The boys worked the small garden plot and made the alcohol to sell at the market or here at the fruit stand. WE found out that although the best beaches were around the north end of the Island but there were beaches on the south end not affected by the tides. They were harder to get down to, because of the rocks. Erick offered to show us, but I told him the next day would be better. The tide was mostly in by the time we got to the beaches on the north end of the island. I told my boys we'd try the south end tomorrow. WE headed back to Sandpiper. "We going to pick up Erick?" "Do you boys want to?" "Maybe we should talk about it first." Siam said. When we got back to Sandpiper, Jake and Randy were getting ready to visit the Sea water caverns. At the mention of swimming, three of my boys ears pricked up. "Can we go Ed?" Temin asked. "Sure if you want, but better wear something less revealing than normal. It's a real tourist place." Temin, Rad and Jer headed onto Sandpiper to change. I grabbed the two jugs of moonshine. "What have you got there Ed?" "Moonshine." "Really?" He took one of the jugs, twisted off the cap and took a swig. "Damn that is real nice stuff. Should stock up on it. Cut down the use of the good stuff on board." "Well I got it from a fruit stand along Cook highway on the west coast." "Mind if we use your Jeep?" "Go ahead, just remove the Gideon." "Cool." I tossed him my keys and with Siam headed on board Sandpiper. Sandpiper was a ghost ship with everyone away. Siam and I were a lone. "Well you managed to get me all to your self again love, not that I mind." He went and grabbed a couple of cold beers and sat on my lap. He just looked at me. I knew when he wanted something. "Okay love. What is it you want?" "Ed you always say that if you find a wrong you will try to make it right." "That's true Siam. Do you think you have found something wrong?" "Well I know Erick is gay, at least I'm pretty sure. When he said he'd show us the beaches in the south, that woman was sure interested in him going. I bet she has him hooking to tourists. Also he doesn't look like he's from Tonga. His skin is too light. I think it's just a real deep tan he has. I don't think that was his real mom." "You figured all that out from that short conversation?" "Please Ed. Can we just check it out tomorrow?" "WE can do that baby." "So what would you like to do now?" I was pretty sure of his answer. "Can my handsome Ambassador fuck my brains out?" "As long as my cute consort will return the favor." I said as I stood up with him wrapped around me. WE spent a very loving afternoon. Trying every position I knew and few new ones Siam taught me. It was somewhat strange. Siam was all of five foot and weighed no more than a hundred pounds soaking wet, yet he could handle my eight inch cock without a whimper and I'm sure if I had been bigger he would had no problem. The reverse when he screwed me showed just how talented my lover was. Driving me almost around the bend each time he was inside me. Those three hours wore us both out. A long cool shower and cold beer in the lounge woke us up, at least somewhat. Andy was back making dinner when we finally came up. The rest of the crew slowly returned to the nest as well. All told the same story about how friendly and cheap the Island was. John had said it was a great place to visit and it was proving correct. Tomorrow I would take my boys to the beaches on the South end of the Island and pick up Erick on the way. Siam would not let me forget I'm sure. You could tell just from the way my crew sat in the lounge of Sandpiper who the couples were. Jer and Siam sat next to me with the others spread around talking about their first day on Tonga. I saw Jerry and Harold out on the stern deck talking. Harold was shaking his head, but jerry was obviously winning the verbal battle. Finally both came into the lounge. Harold had tears running down his face. "Ed with your permission I'd like to make Harold my permanent partner. I know some of you know where I came from and how I was brought up, but being on Sandpiper and then meeting Harold has completely changed me. Also because Harold doesn't want to leave Sandpiper, I want to become part of her permanent crew." "Well Jerry you don't need my permission. As to becoming part of the crew, well that is also not up to me. You have to have the crew's permission for that. I hope any changes won't stop you from writing about Sandpiper and her crew." Harold and Jerry for that matter were pretty overwhelmed by all the congratulation hugs and kisses from the crew. A date was set for after we left Tonga. We'd pick a deserted Island so both could spend some time alone after the nuptials. Of course we agreed that it would not be made public until after my up coming law suit trial. Jerry had already been notified he would have to testify by my lawyers and we didn't want a conflict of interest coming into the trial. The sleeping arrangements on Sandpiper wouldn't change much. Jerry had been sleeping on one of the pullout beds in the lounge. Now with Harold as his partner there was really only one on Sandpiper not partnered. That was Allan our new Engineer. I knew he had been sleeping around, but spent most of his time with Sal and Jerry. James our other odd man out was for all intents and purposes partnered with Andy and Juan. Very late we all retired for the night. Not that my night was over, not with four boys in my bed. You would think that all the energy these boys expended they would not have enough left over. Never happened. They always gave me a real run at night. I never turned them down either. It was obvious what my four wanted when we got up and moving. All opted for those almost translucent Speedos they had bought. Wet they left nothing to the imagination. Sandpiper shorts went over top of them. I opted for a white pair with the crotch insert still in. That was as close to showing everything I would get. Siam also packed an extra set. He said it was for Erick if he didn't have Speedos. After a light breakfast, we grabbed a small cold pack, filled it with cold beer and headed out. A 45 minute drive got us to the small fruit stand. As soon as we drove up Erick was there. "Well ready to show us the beaches on the south end of the Island?" He nodded his head. I knew then that some of what Siam had said was true. Erick obviously understood English far better than he let on. Erick ran up to the small house. A few minutes later he came out with a towel under his arm. The lady came out too, with a big smile on her face. Erick was smiling too. That was an anomaly. If Erick was been forced to do what that women wanted he seemed awfully happy. He ran back down to the jeep and squeezed in with the boys in back. Four in back of my Jeep made for a very full back seat. I just climbed in and drove off. Tonga was definitely a tourist destination. We had to drive pretty slow with all the traffic, including lots of both small and large tour buses. There wasn't much talking coming from the back seat, but there was a lot of giggling. Not being able to take my eyes off the road, I could imagine what was going on with four squeezed into the back of the Jeep. "There is a side track coming up on the right. It will take you almost to the beach." Erick said from the back. His English was almost perfect. I was about to comment on his English when my phone beeped. I pulled over to answer. The conversation with Jake was short and quick. I was needed back at Sandpiper immediately and how long would I be. "Erick, what is the quickest way back to the port. I need to get there as quick as possible." "If you take the next left it will get you over the hump and into the City. From there is only a few minutes." "Okay boys, I don't know what's going on, but we will get to swimming eventually. Erick we'll take you back after I find out what the emergency is." "Okay Sir." The trip back was pretty fast. I didn't spare the horses in the Jeep. When we pulled onto the dock we were stopped immediately by two armed officers. After checking my passport was allowed to drive to Sandpiper pulled up close to Sandpiper. There were a hell of a lot of armed guards around Sandpiper and three shinny black limos parked close by. I again had to show my passport before I was allowed on my own yacht. The boys were checked too and Erick without identification was stopped. "He's with me. You don't like it tough. Come on Erick." I put my arm over his shoulder and led him on board. "You boys take Erick down to the stateroom." I held Siam back as they took off. "Find out all you can from Erick." I kissed him on the cheek and headed into the lounge. There were five people in the lounge when I walked in. Jake plus two Naval Officers, one of which I recognized and both John and James from the US and British consulates. The other Uniformed officer stepped forward. "I apologize for interrupting your holiday Mr. Ambassador. I am Admiral Joseph Wellington, CNO for the RAN. I presume you know these other three, but I think you know this man by another name." He indicted Hiro. "My apologies Mr. Ambassador. If I had known who you really were I would have been more open. I am actually Commander Hiro Samaras of the Japanese Navy Intelligence. "So what do I owe the pleasure of this unexpected visit?" "Mr. Ambassador." I held up my hand. "It's just Ed. This Ambassador crap is for the birds. I am on holiday here." That got a chuckle from the Admiral. "Joe is good enough for me as well." I walked to the bar and poured myself a scotch, then offered everyone else on. They accepted and I sat down. "Now explain." "WE have been informed by your friends in the US Navy that you record every incident you run into. We'd like to see the recording you made of the Pau Pau." "I have no idea what you are talking about." TBC.
