Ralph, Jean, Sean and Juan were busy from sunup to sundown. They were working six days a week, and stopping by the vineyard Sunday afternoons to check up if anything needed immediate care. Red had met one of Carlos' cousins for cokes, and pumped him for information about "The Gay Scene" in Northern Salinas Valley. He was surprised to learn there was a group which held dances, picnics and beach parties, though no one wanted to swim in the cold Pacific Ocean in Monterey County. Red went to a dance with the cousin, Rudy, Rudolfo, though no one called him by his given name. Red enjoyed the group, and even practiced a bit of line dancing, though he wouldn't get out on the floor with the rest of the guys and gals. A blonde man about his age led him to a corner where he could watch the man, Henry, and practice the steps. Henry wore the cowboy outfit: boots, jeans, shirt and hat. Red wore jeans, but had a knit shirt and tennis shoes. Henry made a point of saying that men wore all sorts of clothing to the dances, and the cowboy garb wasn't required. Red felt better. After they had danced in the corner for a while, the music turned to slow music for touch dancing. Henry took Red's right hand, led him to the dance floor, put his right hand on Red's shoulder, and pushed Red's right hand back as he stepped forward, pushing Red gently backwards. He kept doing this, and soon Red was comfortably following Henry's lead. The first song was followed by an even slower song. Henry pulled Red closer to him and winked at him. Red was surprised. He had never danced to slow music before, and touch dancing was something he didn't know how to do. That is, until Henry took him in his arms. He had trusted Henry to show him line dancing, now he trusted Henry to teach him slow dancing. In fact, he was enjoying feeling Henry's touch and when their bodies touched. When the evening's dancing ended, everybody seemed to be going to a pizzeria. Henry asked Red if he wanted to go. Red told Henry he had come with Rudy, and needed to find out if his driver was going, too. Henry asked where Red lived. Red told him he lived a little bit north of Soledad, not far from the state prison. Henry said he'd be happy to take Red home from the pizzeria. Red found Rudy and said, "I'd like to go to the pizzeria tonight. If you're not going, I have a ride with Henry." "That's great. I'm thinking about taking someone home tonight. Have fun at the pizzeria. Let me know how your night goes," Rudy answered. "I sure will, and thank you for bringing me tonight. I had a good time," Red told him. Henry led Red to his pickup truck. It was one of those big four-wheel drive models where you really needed the running board hanging down from the body so you could climb into the truck. Red climbed into the passenger seat and closed the door. Henry buckled his seat belt and waited for Red, then told him, "There's a rule in my truck. The truck doesn't move until everybody's belted in." "Oh, sorry," said Red, and buckled his belt. "I guess I'm a bit of a bug about safety, but a good friend of mine was not buckled in when he was in an accident. It wasn't much of an accident, but he didn't have the steering wheel to hang on to, and was thrown out the open window. Of course, he died. So, that's my rule." "That's fine with me," Red said, as he looked Henry up and down, admiring his nice, trim body, his trim blonde mustache, and the little bit of blonde chest hair that stuck out of his shirt. The ride to the pizzeria took no more than five minutes. Henry parked his truck, then he and Red went inside. They ordered a big pizza, no anchovies, please, and two Cokes. Friends of Henry beckoned them to a big booth with room for both of them to be seated. Henry immediately introduced Red to his friends, then explained that it was Red's first night with the group, and he needed to join. Henry explained to Red that it only cost $10 a year to belong, and the entry fees for dances and parties were always low, sometime free, like tonight's dance. The names of the pizza purchasers were called out by the cashier, and men and women collected their pizzas and brought them back to their tables. Henry and Red were the last ones to be called, but everybody seemed to be taking their time to eat their pizzas, so they weren't eating alone. Somehow, Red's knee and thigh seemed to be touching Henry's knee and thigh all during the meal. Neither said anything, but each enjoyed the closeness. Little by little, the pizzeria's customers emptied out. Henry and Red were almost the last customers inside the restaurant. Then they finished their pizza, got into the truck, and Red directed Henry to the little cabin where he lived near the prison. At night you could see the lights from the prison for miles. It was not the maximum security prison like the one up near the Oregon border. There were still classes for the inmates, and Red knew a man who taught there. When they got to Red's cabin, Red invited Henry in for some coffee, or beer if he preferred it. Henry said, "Well, I can't stay very long. I've got livestock to take care of early tomorrow morning. I've liked getting to know you, Red, and I hope we'll see more of each other." "We sure will," Red answered, leading Henry into the small cabin. Henry noted it was neat, not unpleasantly so, but clothing properly picked up, not dropped on the floor or the furniture. There was a coffee cup in the sink, but whatever dishes Red has used earlier were put away. Red filled up the coffee maker with water, added coffee, and turned on the machine. Then he asked Henry what he liked in his coffee. Henry said, "I like my coffee strong and black." When the coffee was ready, Red brought two big mugs to the coffee table in front of the sofa. Henry put a coaster under each one, to protect the wood from the heat. Red settled on the sofa, near Henry, but not touching him. He thought it would be wise not to come on too strong to Henry now. Red asked Henry to tell about himself. "Well," Henry said, pausing to think a moment, "I guess you'd say I'm just an ordinary guy who grew up on a farm, and has a small place now with some stock, some chickens, a garden that provides most of my vegetables, a few fruit trees, and I live alone. I was married, and my wife died about five years ago. We never had any children. How about you?" "I, uh, I live alone. I work at a helicopter maintenance shack a bit up 101 [the north-south route from Los Angeles to the Oregon border, inland a bit from the Pacific Ocean] I've never been married, and have no family within 500 miles. Oh, I'm gay, and I'm out to everybody I know in the state. My family cut me off when I came out to them." "Sorry about that, Red. It must be hard to be thrown out of the family. I don't have any family left, and my wife's family died off. So, my friends in the valley are my family. I'm out to them, but I'm not out at work. I'm a prison guard at the state prison. Being gay there is risking your life. "Um, this coffee is good. I wish I could stay longer, but, as I said, I've got my stock to take care of tomorrow morning, before I go to work. I work a sort of crazy, rotating schedule. Some weeks I'm on day shift, then maybe evenings, and usually nights. My days off change, too." "I'd like to see you again, Henry. Maybe you could come spend the night, or I could come to your place." "Sorry, Red. I don't have sex with a man until I know him better. No sex on the first date, or, usually, the second either. Here's my telephone number. Why don't you call me tomorrow night, if you feel like talking. Thanks for the coffee." "Thanks for the ride. I don't know much about dating men, but I'd sure like to kiss you before you leave. Would that be alright?" "Sure, Red. Stand up and give me a hug, and I'd like to kiss you." They hugged and kissed, then Henry left a frustrated Red. Red had hoped to bed Henry that night, but it wasn't to be. Maybe the next time they got together, he'd get a chance to go over Henry's body and package. He walked over to the mail box and took out a few ads and an envelope addressed to him. The return address was not familiar to him. Red opened the envelope and found an invitation to an open house where Hal and three other men lived. It was two weeks ahead. Guests were asked to bring folding chairs and towels. Everything else would be provided. The grapes would already be picked, and everybody was invited to join in the crush. It was suggested that no clothing be worn at the open house, to avoid staining it with grape juice. "Bring a guest, if you'd like, and let us know if you can make it." Red immediately hoped he could bring Henry. He'd have to get going and call Henry tomorrow, so he could have a date before the nude open house. He wanted Henry to be relaxed enough to be nude. Red rinsed the coffee mugs and the coffee carafe, then got ready for bed. In bed, he pulled the covers around his nude body, and ran his hands over the more sensitive parts. He hoped he'd soon have a good man to share his bed, and Henry was a good choice. Red soon slept. ___________________________________________________ TO THE READERS: THIS IS THE LAST CHAPTER OF "SURPRISE GUEST."
