This is a gay love story set in the late 60s and early 70s when, despite

Having said goodbye to Daniel, Rupert made his way out to the car to set
off on the journey to Stoke-on-Trent. He had thought about breaking the

was happy to drive the four or five hours it would take to get there
provided they had a short rest. Rupert said they would leave mid morning
and stop off for lunch somewhere. They would then arrive during the
afternoon. Since the meeting with Mr Drayton was the following morning this
would give them plenty of time for their journey.

"I take it you have loaded our bags Jacob" Rupert said as Jacob opened the
rear door of the car for him.

"Yes sir, all packed"

As soon as they had left the estate, Rupert asked Jacob to stop somewhere
convenient along the road. Jacob pulled into a farm entrance just along the
road and peered back at Rupert.

"Would you have any objection if I joined you in the front Jacob?" Rupert
asked, "It is going to get lonely in the back on my own and I would
appreciate the company."

Jacob was more than happy to have his employer sitting beside him so
immediately agreed. Rupert told him to stay where he was, jumped out of the
back and into the seat beside Jacob. They then proceeded on their way
having told Jacob to say if he required a rest at any point.

"If necessary I could always take over driving for a while" Rupert said
casually, "I can drive you know".

Jacob giggled and said he was sure Rupert could and in fact he had seen him
drive the Land Rover to the home farm.

Rupert had also agreed with John and the ladies that they would all drop
the use of their titles on an everyday basis. It was his father who had
always insisted on the term Lord and Lady being used and Rupert felt that
in the late sixties it was somewhat over the top for the staff to always
have to use these terms except on more formal occasions. As such, the staff
all called Rupert and John 'sir' and the ladies 'madam'. The only person
who had difficulty in getting used to the new nomenclature was Cecil but he
was managing to do so.

"Whilst we are away Jacob, I would like to refer to you as my assistant
rather than chauffeur if that is acceptable to you."

Jacob was more than happy with this uplifting of his status and he agreed
that in the circumstances it would be much better. Rupert also explained
that it would mean they would be dining together but Jacob again stated
that was perfectly acceptable to him.

"Tell me Jacob, you seem to be a reasonably well educated young man so how
is it you ended up in service?"

Jacob laughed, "Long story sir but basically my father threw me out when I
was barely sixteen when he found out about me ... how should I put it
... preferring my own sex."

"Ah and how did he come across such information?" Rupert asked.

"He found me in bed with another young man sir and I believe you know what
the consequences are of being found in such a compromising situation" Jacob

"Indeed" Rupert laughed.

The hotel Cecil had chosen was situated just south of Stoke-on-Trent. Jacob
drove in and parked the car in one of the spaces near the front
entrance. Once he had collected their overnight bags from the boot of the
car they made their way inside with Rupert carrying his attaché
case. Once Rupert had announced who they were, the receptionist immediately
jumped to attention and instructed a lad to take the bags from Jacob and
lead them up to the suite of rooms that had been reserved for them. They
were in fact the best rooms in the house and when Jacob walked in he was
taken aback. He could not really believe that he was going to spend the
next couple of nights with Rupert here.

The lad passed over the keys to the room to Jacob and as he did so, Jacob
slipped him one of the coins that Rupert had given to him earlier for
incidental expenses. It was the first time in his life that he had been the

"This must be the other bedroom" Rupert commented as he peered into a small
room off the main bedroom, "but the bed does not look that appealing
Jacob. It is up to you of course, but you are welcome to share this one

Jacob looked into the small room and agreed that the bed looked more
suitable for a child than an adult.

"If you are sure sir, then I would rather share the larger bed with you

to Drayton who agreed that every precaution should be taken.

"We are here to see Mr Drayton" Jacob said to the receptionist when they
finally got inside.

"Who shall I say is calling?" the girl asked.

"Just tell Mr Drayton that his visitors have arrived, he is expecting us"
Jacob replied much to Rupert's amusement and satisfaction.

A minute or two later another lady appeared and ushered them into a large
office where Mr Drayton met them.

"Good morning gentlemen" he said offering his hand to be shaken.

When Rupert and Jacob had shaken the offered hand, they all sat down round
a table whilst the secretary brought in a tray of tea and biscuits. Mr
Drayton then instructed her that they did not want any interruptions of any
sort. She then left them and closed the door behind her.

Rupert then asked Drayton if he knew the business owned by Lord Hallsdown
near Derby.

"Oh yes, we do indeed" he replied knowingly, "I understand he treats his
employees like dirt, pays them a pittance and cracks the whip as it were;
as such he tries to undercut all his competitors. His customers are taken
in for a while but when they realise the quality of product is not what
they had been led to believe they soon move on; it always amazes me how the
man remains in business."

"So it would not upset you if his business was brought down in some way"
Rupert then said.

Drayton paused before answering and then said "It would delight me
immensely if that were possible".

"Excellent, excellent" Rupert replied smiling and then proceeded to explain
why he personally wanted Hallsdown ruined and showed Drayton the
photographs of Daniel's injuries.

Like everyone, Drayton was shocked and disgusted.

"It does explain one thing though" he continued, "I have been led to
believe that he employs many under age boys and treats them with more care
than he does the other employees. I assume he is doing the same to them do
you think?"

Rupert said that was a possibility but he had no knowledge of this being
the case. He then proceeded to detail his plan in which the union steward
in Derby brought the workforce out on strike. Drayton immediately explained
that they had tried this before but Hallsdown had sacked all the strikers
leaving many workers unemployed. Rupert then detailed the next part of his
proposed plan.

"Would you be interested in expanding here and taking on that workforce
provided you had the capital to do so and some guarantees in place to
ensure you were not out of pocket?"

Drayton could hardly believe his ears. Yes he certainly would be interested
and had discussed it with his owner on many occasions but the capital to
set it up was high and with Hallsdown always under cutting them there was
no guarantee they could make the expansion viable.

"Well this way you would remove him from the picture leaving you to sweep
up the business instead" Rupert grinned.

"I like it" Drayton replied excitedly, "I like it very much; can we discuss
it in more detail?"

Rupert pulled out from his attaché case a document he had prepared
earlier and passed it to Drayton. Having read it he grinned.

"Do you have any idea how much the capital outlay could be for something
like this?"

"I have a rough idea but this is why I am here to find out more precisely"
Rupert replied, "but as I see it this could be a good investment for me in
the long term since I am certain you could see good profits from it with
our friend out of the way."

"I agree but Hallsdown will go nuts once he finds out"

"True but by that time he will be bankrupt and more than likely in prison"
Rupert said casually.

"Well, well, I can see you have done your homework; I am glad I am on your
side and not the other!" Drayton laughed.

"Since it is nearly lunchtime, why don't I take you out to lunch and we can
talk some more" Rupert said noting the time, "I take it you know somewhere
worthy to go to nearby" he then added.

"Indeed, I do" Drayton replied still not believing what was happening. It
was a dream come true and he had to pinch himself to be sure he was not
dreaming.


Over lunch, they discussed the plans in more detail and Rupert was pleased
to see that Jacob often contributed to the conversation. He had some
knowledge of trade unions so was able to add useful titbits every now and
then.

"I will need to discuss this with my owner" Drayton said at one point, "but
I cannot see there will be a problem since I believe he knows you".

"He does indeed and in fact I am about to marry his sister so we shall
shortly be family" Rupert smiled.

"Oh congratulations" he replied not having the slightest inkling that
Rupert much preferred to bed his own sex!


During the lunch, Drayton stated that the shop steward at his factory knew
the one in Derby very well. Jacob then suggested that perhaps they speak to
Drayton's shop steward to sound him out and see if he would be willing to
speak to the other man.

Both Rupert and Drayton thought this an excellent idea so when they
returned to his office he immediately called the man in.

Without actually introducing Rupert and Jacob by name, Drayton briefly
explained what they were trying to achieve. The man immediately grinned and
said it was about time that Hallsdown received a damaging blow.

"I take it then that you would be willing to speak to your brother in
Derby" Jacob said casually.

"Absolutely, I certainly would and with those guarantees that whoever is
sacked by Hallsdown would be employed here then I am sure there will be no
problem."

"We would of course provide transport to ferry them in Bob and where
possible assist with relocation for those that were interested."

The steward again stated that he could see no problem and would be more
than willing to do his part.

"Would you have any objection to Bob here seeing those photographs?"
Drayton then asked Rupert.

Rupert agreed provided the contents were kept strictly confidential. Having
obtained that assurance, Rupert pulled them out of his attaché case
again and spread them on the table for the steward to see. Having looked at
them he was boiling with anger. It made him even more determined to bring
Hallsdown crashing down.

"I wonder whether that explains why he employs so many young boys at the
plant" Bob said casually.

"It certainly could Bob, it certainly could."


Having gone as far as they could, the steward left them with the clear
understanding that what they had discussed must remain confidential until
Drayton had obtained the approval of his boss and even then he would need
to tread extremely carefully.

"Fully understood boss" Bob replied before closing the door behind him.

Rupert and Jacob decided they had gone as far as they could for the moment
so left Drayton to call his boss and send Rupert the final figures
detailing the costs.

"I suggest you post the documents to me yourself and not send them out from
here" Rupert said finally.

Drayton agreed and said he too would take the utmost care to keep Rupert's
name out of the equation.

When Rupert and Jacob got back to their room they looked at each other and
grinned.

"I think that went rather well don't you Jacob?"

"Extremely well sir" Jacob replied as he slowly removed his suit and
shirt. "Would you like a rest now sir or a bath first?" he then asked with
a smirk on his face.

"Why don't we have a rest first Jacob; I think we deserve one."


They were both soon naked and lying on the bed beside each other. It was

left him to it.

conversation.

Jacob passed Rupert his drink and stood beside him for a moment.

"Am I dropping you off in London on our way back tomorrow sir?" he asked.

Rupert confirmed that was the plan and that Jacob would drive back to
Brylands.

"Is that okay with you Jacob?"

"Certainly sir, no problem" Jacob replied slightly disappointed that he
would not enjoy Rupert's company all the way home.

"Come and join me" Rupert then told him so Jacob put his drink down on the
floor beside Rupert and climbed alongside him on the sofa.
