Email: scroo_yoo89081@yahoo.com When You Least Expect It By B J Chapter 1 It's strange, starting over again. Being away from home for 10 years, first for college, then starting a career, and then a life of your own outside your immediate family in another state. Now here I am at 27, flying back across the country making a fresh start in the beautiful, scenic, and dry desert called Las Vegas. I guess the best things I can say about this move is that it gets me away from my cheating ex and a few hours closer to my family, by plane anyway. My name is Colin James. I was born and raised in Hawaii. Lived there for 17 years before going off to the `Mainland' (as we locals called it), I was accepted into the Culinary Institute of America in New York City. Now, imagine an island boy that has never been away from the islands moving to this big city and trying to find my way around. It's pretty funny looking back on that time. I was definitely naïve and very trusting of people back then. Now, I'm still a little trusting just not as naïve. I come from an average family. Mom being half Hawaiian, half Japanese and Dad being half English, half Spanish has given us kids almond shaped eyes that are green, black hair, and the ability to tan very nicely rather than turn red. We've all taken on attributes from both our parents. Mom and Dad provided for their three children, oops I meant four children. I need to stop forgetting that I'm not the baby of the family anymore. There's my older brother Aaron (31), my older sister Brooke (29), myself (27), and then little Dalton (6). Yeah, tell me about it. Scary to think Mom and Dad are still sexually active after all these years. I guess they were sad that their kids were growing up and on their own and were tired of waiting for my older brother and sister to provide them with little ones to run around the house. So, they had another child. And yes, our initials are used for nicknames. AJ, BJ, and I are very close. They're both pretty protective of me and more so of DJ. When my ex and I broke up over him cheating on me not once, but twice they wanted to get on the next plane out to beat the crap out of him. Yes, I did say him. My ex-boyfriend cheated on me. My family actually liked him, so him cheating on me made it that much more upsetting. "Hey baby! Are you looking for a date?" a female voice asked as someone patted me on the ass. I stopped trying to put my luggage together and stood up. "Um no thanks," I said turning around. Mom and Dad started laughing when they saw the shocked look on my face. "Oh, it's you two." My parents started laughing as I shook my head. "It's good to see you too son." Dad said as he continued to laugh. I pulled my parents into a hug and kissed their cheeks. "CJ!" my baby brother yelled before jumping into my arms as I knelt down. "Hey little brother," I said hugging him tightly. "I missed you so much CJ. You should just move home and be close to me." DJ said. I smiled at him. "I would have if I could've gotten a job back home DJ because I miss you just as much." I replied. "When is your walk through at the condo?" Mom asked. "Tomorrow morning at nine," I answered. "So, you should be able to move in by Friday?" Dad asked. "Actually, they said if everything is okay they'll hand the keys over after the walk through and I can move in as soon as possible." I told him. "Well, then why don't we go furniture shopping today and see if anything interests you." Mom suggested. I nodded. We carried my luggage to the rental car that they had for their time here. "We should also look at cars too," Dad said as we loaded my bags into the trunk. "Yeah, they don't have the subway system out here." I laughed. "What do you feel like having for lunch? And no DJ we're not going to McDonald's." Mom said. I laughed as DJ closed his mouth and pouted. "There's a Denny's why don't we stop there?" I said. "Do they have cheeseburgers CJ?" My little brother asked softly. "Yeah, they do." I whispered back. His pout turned into a smile and I ruffled his hair. Dad pulled into the parking lot and we all headed in. DJ got his cheeseburger and fries that he wanted. While Mom and Dad ordered the chicken fried steak and I ordered breakfast. After lunch we headed to the hotel to drop off my luggage. "Can we go swimming after?" DJ asked. "We'll go swimming after we go to the furniture store." Mom answered. "Okay." He said. I looked at him and winked. "Yeah, you gotta help me pick out some furniture for my place little man." I said to him. "What else are you going to need to get?" Mom asked me. "Well, besides furniture, all the household stuff, and a computer." I replied. "There's a Bed, Bath, and Beyond here, and we can go to Best Buy for your computer." She said. I nodded. We asked the bellman if there were any furniture stores near by. He gave us directions to a few of them on the same road. Mom made a list of what interested in me and took measurements of all the furniture. I looked at her as she pulled a measuring tape from her purse. "What?" she asked. "You've got a measuring tape." I said. "You never know when it'll come in handy," she defended. The interior designer did have a point. After looking at the four different stores, we found a Nevada State Bank. "I need to open a new account." I said. We stopped and I opened a new account. I provided them with the purchase agreement of my condo that showed my address along with two forms of ID. Jeff Marshall, the Financial Service Supervisor was efficient and very friendly. "Sweetie, he's flirting with you." Mom whispered after Jeff walked away to process the deposit. I laughed. "He was not." I said. Dad agreed with Mom. "Here's your receipt for the deposit and the cash you wanted back. Do you have any questions?" Jeff said as he folded up the paperwork for my account and my temporary checks. "Um, we're going car shopping after this and I was wondering if they'd take these temporary checks." I said. "I put one of my business cards in the folder with the different brochures but, I'll give you another one and type up a letter saying that you have the money in your account." Jeff said. I smiled. "That would be great." I said. "That way if they have any questions they can call me." I nodded as Jeff started typing up a letter stating that I did indeed open a new account with them and that I did have the funds to cover the check that I'd be writing. Here you go Colin, and if they do have any questions have them call me and if you ever need help don't hesitate to call me." He said holding out his hand. I shook his hand and smiled at him. "Thank you for all your help Jeff." I said. He gave us directions to a bunch of dealerships that were on Sahara Avenue. Few hours later I was driving back to the hotel in my new Toyota 4-Runner. DJ was enjoying the first ride in the new vehicle. The next day we did a walk through of my condo in the morning. Mom took some measurements of the rooms and wrote them down so we could see what would work in each room. With the walk through satisfactory they handed me the keys and we headed back to the furniture stores, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot. I bought the furniture pieces that I wanted and that Mom thought would look great in the apartment. At Wal-Mart Mom looked for different decorative items that would look great in the house. By Friday we had the condo painted, furniture rearranged, and the place decorated. Dad, Mom, and DJ were flying back home to Hawaii. I saw them off at the airport, hugging and kissing everyone. "I'm gonna miss you CJ." DJ cried. "I'm going to miss you too little man," I said hugging him tightly and kissing his forehead. "I'll call you when we get home." Mom said. I nodded. "Thank you for all your help Mom." I said hugging her again. "It'll be okay. You'll find another boyfriend. A guy that deserves your heart," Dad said. I smiled as I hugged him tightly. "Thanks Dad." They walked into the airport terminal and I drove back to my condo. Walking in the door, I looked around. "Home sweet home," I said to the condo. I walked into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of beer. `Here's to starting over again.' I thought. I pulled out the menu and the list of ingredients that I needed to study and know by Monday.
