Simon's Story Part 12+1: Deep Thought Simon and Robert spent most of the evening round with Alex and his parents. For both Robert and Simon, it was quite an eye opener. Neither had experienced proper Asian hospitality before and both thoroughly enjoyed it. Neither Robert nor Simon had the chance to talk to Alex properly that evening until it was time to leave. The boys thanked Alex's parents for a wonderful evening and just before they left, managed to create an opportunity to talk to Alex on his own. They were sat on the wall outside Alex's front door. "Thanks for a brilliant evening." Robert said to Alex. "Yea. It was the best!" Simon added. "Thanks guys, but I've got the feeling you've wanted to tell me something all evening." "Well, yes. There is some thing we need to tell you." Simon said. His nerves were starting to build. How would Alex take this? He wondered. "Alex, Simon and I are, hmm--" Robert paused, "not like most other boys." Robert continued changing his approach. "I know." Alex said. "You are much closer, almost like brothers." "Kind of, but its more than that. We're--we're lovers too." Robert eventually said. Both Simon and Robert watched Alex's reaction closely. Alex just sat there and thought for a moment or two. "I had heard the rumours and I guess, deep down, I knew they were true. I try not to judge people just as I don't expect them to judge me." Alex stated calmly. "You don't mind?" Simon asked. "Why should I? It's not like you were after my butt is it?" Alex responded with a smile. Simon and Robert just leaned forward and gave him a quick hug. "Thanks. We will have to return the invitation some time." Simon said changing the subject back. "Thanks. I'll see you at Scouts on Friday." Alex said with a smile. "Not if we see you before that." Robert replied with a grim. "Bye." "See ya!" Simon and Robert walked off. Both felt very happy after spending a very pleasant evening at Alex's and having told him about themselves. The streets were quiet so Robert took hold of Simon's hand as they walked home. Simon didn't object this time. He just smiled. "You've got that look on your face. What are you thinking about?" Robert asked Simon. "Alex." Came the reply. "He is kind of cute isn't he?" Robert responded. "You noticed too then." "Yea. I love the way his bum wiggles as he walks. It's not like the girls where it slops from side to side. It's more discrete, more suggestive." Robert said. "Are you thinking what I think you're thinking?" Simon asked with a grin. Robert's face flushed slightly. "You are, aren't you. You've got a one track mind!" "I can't help it. You've got to admit, he does have certain charm about him." "I know." Simon replied as he released Robert's hand and fondled his lovers bum. "But it's not as cute as this one." Robert just rested his head on Simon's shoulder as they walked along. They got back to Simon's at about 9:15 and as they arrived, Robert recognised the car parked outside. "What's my dad doing here?" "Let's find out." Simon said as they raced to the front door. He opened it and they went in. They entered the living room. "Hi you two. Did you have a good time?" Robert's dad asked. "Hello. Yes thanks. It was brilliant! What's going on?" Both of the boys were suspicious. "Nothing. We just came over to see how everyone was keeping. You don't tell us much any more." "Sorry." Robert said feeling a little guilty. Even he had noticed how much closer the two families become since he and Simon had got together. "Don't worry son. Simon, I hear you two are singing in the play together." Robert's dad said trying to make conversation. "Yea. I'm playing the part of Bill Sykes. He's a bit of a rogue." Simon said. "They must have typecasted you then." Mike said as he and most of the others started laughing. "What part are you playing Squirt?" Mike asked still laughing. "My name is Arthur and I am in Fagin's gang." He said seriously as he glared at his brother. "Well Fagin, are you finding it hard to learn your lines?" Mike asked Robert. "We're working on the music at the moment Mr Bumble!" Robert replied. The three boys all burst out laughing. The adults look puzzled. "Mr Bumble is a big fat guy." Arthur said as he started laughing again. Mike leant forward quickly and grabbed Robert by the arm. Before Robert could react he was face down over Mike's knees as a playful slap landed on his backside before he was released. Robert was a little red faced, but everyone else was laughing hard. Simon realised immediately that Robert hadn't seen the joke and went straight over to him and hugged him close. He lightened up a little as he realised he was the butt of Mike's joke. "Robby." Mike said more seriously as he patted his knees for Robert to sit on them. "Let's be serious for a few moments." He paused and the room fell quiet. "I know you love Si' but I really need to know just how much?" He asked. Robert looked at him in disbelief. How could he ask a question like that in front of everyone, he thought. "Let's put it this way, how much do you love your wife?" Robert asked back. By this time Simon was kneeling on the floor with his arms wrapped around Robert's waist. "I take your point. How do you quantify love?" Mike replied. "Let's put it this way," Robert's dad interrupted, "the night Simon came out, Robert was so loyal to him it cost him 6 hard whacks on the backside. And when Simon locked himself in the bathroom he would have broken the door down when he thought he was trying to hurt himself." "Oh." Mike said. "I didn't know about that." He looked at Simon. "Well son, would you go through that for Robby?" It was Simon's turn to feel uncomfortable. "That and more." Simon replied without hesitation. "I'm glad to hear that." Mike replied. "Dad." Simon said. "How do you feel about Robby and me? About us being different?" He had thought about using the word "gay", but it sounded too blunt, to matter-of-fact. His dad sat there thinking for a few moments. "I look at it this way. As long as you are both happy and you don't do anything stupid. I am happy for you. I'm not sure I'll ever be fully comfortable with your homosexuality, but it's your life." He said looking Simon in the eyes. "Thanks dad." Simon said as he raised himself up slightly had hugged him and Robert at the same time. The two mothers had been watching closely all the time this had been going on. "How do you feel mum?" Robert asked. "It doesn't matter what or who you are, I will always love you." Robert's mother said. "The same goes for me son." Simon's mother added. "I love Sara-Louise." Came Arthur's voice. "Looks like time for the birds and bees talk." Mike said laughingly to Robert's dad. "It sure does." Came the reply. "But not tonight." "What made you start using you proper name Squirt?" Simon asked. "Sara-Louise says Squirt is babyish." Arthur replied bluntly. "Ok. She's nice isn't she?" Simon continued. "Yea. I can't think of anyone I'd rather be with. Apart from mum and dad, that is." "I know how you feel." Simon said as he looked at Robert. "Me too." Robert added. "Have you kissed her yet?" Arthur immediately went red and tried to hide his face. "Way to go Mr Sensitive." Simon said sarcastically to Robert. "Sorry Arthur. I didn't mean it to sound like that." Robert felt very awkward. "Well it did. It's like me asking you if you've fu..."He stopped short and glanced quickly at his parents. "...made love to Simon?" "Actually we have." Simon answered. The parents looked a little surprised. "Several times." "Simon and I, Arthur, are truly in love. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for him or him me. Do you understand?" Robert asked. "So what your saying is that I have really strong feelings for Sara-Louise but they may not be love." Arthur said. "Only you know if it is real love or something else." He paused for a moment. "You know if you ever want to talk, we will always be there for you. Don't you?" Robert asked. "Thanks Robby." Arthur moved across to Robert who was now sat on the floor beside Simon and all three hugged each other tight. There was a sudden intense white flash. "Oh no! Not again." Robert said. "Mum is always doing that. Anyone would think she has a new camera." "I have!" Came her voice. They all looked at her in amazement. "Mum's always loved photography. She took all of our baby photo's and loads of others." Robert explained to Simon. "Wow! Do you think she would take some of us?" Simon asked excitedly. "That depends on what you are doing?" She replied. Simon blushed. "Not a chance!" Robert's mum said as she started laughing. She knew he didn't mean anything rude but took the chance of making a joke about it. "You better learn to phrase things better." Robert laughed as Simon tried to hide his face in Robert's chest. "Boys." Mike said seriously. "We were talking earlier tonight about your relationship and we have decided to make this suggestion. Don't take it the wrong way, either of you." Both Simon and Robert looked at Mike. He was going to say something that was going to have a profound effect on both of them. Robert's father sat there nodding at Mike, both mums were too. "Sleeping here some nights and at Robert's other nights is making it difficult for us to get the right shopping and things so we would like to suggest that you stay here all the time." "Because we never really know where you'll be staying from one night to the next, we have decided to give you the chance to decide where you would most like to stay. You see son," Robert's dad paused for a moment, "you could have an accident or some thing and no-one would know until the hospital or who-ever phoned us. So we thought you might like to stay here with Simon. What do you think?" "Dad. Can I have Robby's room?" Arthur asked his father before Robert could say anything. "NO!" He replied sharply. "It's Robby's room." "So what you are saying is that I can move in here with Si'." Robert said in a questioning voice. "Yes, but only if YOU want to." His father replied. "Go on Robby, it will be great!" Simon said enthusiastically. "I need to think about it. How soon do you want an answer?" Robert asked. "There's no rush love." Robert's mother said. "What's to think about Robby? It'll be like we were a real couple." Simon said. "WE ARE A REAL COUPLE!" Robert shouted back at him. Robert stood up and moved towards the door. "Where are you going Robby?" Simon asked. "I need to think." "Wait up. I'll come with you." "NO! No I need to be alone." Robert told Simon forcefully at first but his tone softened almost immediately afterwards. Robert sat on the stairs near the bottom with his elbows on his knees, his head in his hands. Why did Si' say `like a real couple'. They were a real couple. They had laughed together, cried together even slept together. He understood Simon's enthusiasm. That was natural, but he wasn't the one that felt like he was being thrown out of his home. He didn't believe that was the case but it felt like it. "Are you ok son?" His father asked as he knelt on the step below Robert. "Why are you doing this?" Robert asked his dad. "We think it would be better if you and Si' had a bit of stability. You are always sleeping here some nights and at home others. No one knows exactly where you will be from one night to the next. As I explained just now, if you were in an accident of something none of us would know until the hospital phoned. We never know when to expect you." "There is no other reason?" Robert asked his dad looking deep into his eyes. "No. We only want what's best for you and Simon." Robert put his arms around his father's neck and pulled him close kissing him on the lips. "Whoa. Hold up young man." Robert's dad said. "Thanks dad." Robert said. "That only leaves one matter to clear up." He said but deep down he wasn't so sure. They stood up and went back into the sitting room. "Simon." Robert said seriously. "What did you mean `like a real couple'?" Simon knew this was a crucial question and an awful lot was riding on his answer. "I didn't mean it the way it sounded. Look, we sleep together but we now have the chance to live together like real partners rather than lovers who don't live together." Simon felt extremely frustrated at his own inability to express what he wanted to say. "Hm." Was all Robert said. "What more can I say or do. I want this more than anything else in the world." "I know, but you aren't looking at it from my point of view. How would you feel if it was the other way round?" Robert asked. "I see your point." Simon replied. His expression became more serious. Everyone else was sitting there watching and listening intently. "I think I'd need more time to make my mind up." "Exactly. I know you are in favour of it, but I don't know. I'd love to live with you but that means I will be leaving home. It's one hell of a step." "Robert. Take your time and think it through carefully. We'd love you to stay here but only if it is what you really want to do." Mike said. They all sat there silent for a short while. "Time is getting on and it's a school day tomorrow." Simon's mother said. "Good point." Robert's mother agreed. "We should be going. It's past Arthur's bed time." "Mum. Can I stay with you tonight?" Robert asked. Simon looked shocked. "Ok. Is Simon coming over too?" "Of course." Robert answered. "I don't know what I would do if we were ever separated." Simon looked happier now. When Robert first asked his mum about going home he didn't think he was included, but he should have known better. When they reached Robert's, a short drive away, all three boys went up to bed, Arthur to his room, Robert and Simon to theirs. Very soon the house was quiet. Despite Simon's best efforts Robert wasn't in the mood for love. He just lay there totally unresponsive. "Robby. Talk to me, please." He paused. "I feel so bloody useless at the moment. I couldn't even turn that match stick of yours into a scaffold pole just now." Simon said despondently. "Sorry Si', but I gotta sort this out." Robert replied as he tried to smile at Simon. "I know. It would be like moving house to a totally different country." Simon said. "Hey you got a boner. What the hell brought that on?" "Alex." "Eh?" "You said it would be like moving to a totally different country. Alex." "Guess what? I gotta boner too now." Simon said with a grin. "Alex?" "Yea." "The deal is this, if he wants to have some fun, we both have to be there. No two-somes. OK?" "Ok but what if he doesn't?" Simon asked. "Then we are on our own." "There is always Greg?" "Nah. He's got a bird. You know that girl from the 6th Form." Robert said. "Oh yea." "Do you really think my mum and dad are trying to get rid of me?" Robert asked changing the subject. "Don't be an ass. They love you as much as I do. If they wanted to get rid of you they wouldn't have given you a choice, would they?" Simon sounded frustrated. Why did his lover keep going on about being got rid of, he thought to himself. "I suppose you're right." Robert replied before turning over and trying to go to sleep. Simon was getting worried. Why was he thinking this way? All his parents were trying to do was give him some freedom and ensure his safety. Simon could see this. Why couldn't Robert? Simon slipped out of bed and after putting Robert's bath robe on went to see Robert's parents. He knocked gently on their door and listened for an answer. "What is it Simon?" Robert's dad answered. Simon opened the door and sat on the side of the bed. "How did you know it was me?" He asked. "No-one else bothers to knock. What's up?" Robert's dad asked. "Robby's got it into his head that you are trying to get rid of him. I've tried to tell him that's a load of rubbish but he wouldn't listen and now he's getting himself into a right state about it." "Thanks Si'. I'll be there in a moment." Robert's dad answered. Simon went back to Robert and sat there in bed beside him stroking his hair. Robert's parents came in a few moments later. For nearly 20 minutes the three of them tried to convince Robert that he had got it completely wrong. Robert's dad left in the end. His patience had worn thin, but his mother persisted and eventually she won through and went back to bed. By now, it was very late and neither Simon nor Robert had the inclination for anything but sleep. They both snuggled down and hugged each other tight as sleep took them both.
