It's the pain and joy of life." - Unknown _________ Part 3 - My best friend needs me; I _will_ be there _________ Brian stood by the phone, he had been standing there now for a while, trying to melt what he what he'd just been told. Jim, Nicks bodyguard had just finished a conversation with him. He had told Brian that Nick had had some kind of a break down and that he was worried about Nicks condition. Jim had urged Brian to fly over as soon as possible. He hadn't said why, but he was very persistent on this issue, Brian needed to come now. Brian's decision was easy; he picked up the phone and booked a flight to Munich immediately. Fuck the wedding, Nick needed him, his best friend needed him. No way Brian would give up on him now, definitely not because of some stupid wedding he didn't want to attend anyhow! "Leighanne!" Brian called out to his wife. "Yeah, hon'?" Leighanne showed up in the doorway a few seconds later, with one of her amazing smiles. "I'm going to Munich, I have to be there." Brian told her. The smile disappeared off of her face and was replaced by anger. "What! I can't believe you're leaving! I've told everyone that you'd..." Leighanne was about to start yell at him, when Brian said something that made her stop in mid-sentence. "Nick has broken down." Brian stated simply. "I gotta be there." Brian's sadness for Nicks anguish showed through as he spoke, making his voice crack up. "Oh." Her face showed nothing but sorrow, "What has happened?" "I don't know, Jim refused to tell, he just said that I had to be there." "That's strange...?" "Yeah, but I gotta be there. I'm begging you with all my heart, you know I have to go, please don't hate me for leaving." Brian looked at her with his pain showing in his eyes. Then she knew that Brian indeed had to be there, if not for Nick, then for himself. "I could never hate you!" Leighannes heart melted as she saw her husbands' misery. "Come here!" She embraced him with her arms. *** Howie sat by the window in one of the rooms, reading a magazine and AJ laid on the couch, flipping channels on the TV as Kevin walked in. Howie looked up from his magazine and greeted Kevin, "Hey Kevin." A slight pause, "So, where's Nick? Still ain't feeling well?" Howie continued on. "I dunno," Kevin answered, "Jim says that he still doesn't feel too well. But you know what just happened?" "Nah, what?" "I just got off the phone with Brian; he's coming straight away. Skipping the wedding and all!" "Wohaa!" AJ jumped into the conversation, "What does Leighanne say about THAT?!" Howie looked totally out of the blue, "Wasn't it, like, such a big deal that he'd be there?", directing himself to Kevin. "Yeah, I know. A lot of people she wanted him to meet." "Well, something big has got to have happened!" said Howie. "I dunno, but Brian sure is in a hurry to get here. He'll arrive at noon." Kevin replied. *** The gigantic Boeing 747, painted in the livery of Virgin Atlantic, descended through the fog surrounding Munich International Airport. It touched down with its tyres screeching against the tarmac. It had just completed its 349th voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and its crew were all to be relieved by a fresh one and the giant would soon be on its 350th flight across the mighty ocean. Not that anyone in particular would care to notice as much. On board the flight, amongst all the German tourists returning from Orlando, with the exception of a few businessmen, was Brian of the Backstreet Boys. "Enjoy your stay in Germany, sir." The first-class stewardess addressed Brian when he exited the plane. Brian looked at her, "Thank you. I had a very pleasant flight!" and hurried on into the long tube leading to the gate. A seriously looking German police officer was standing by the exit, waving most of the passenger through and stopping some as they passed. As it turns out, the officer chose Brian to check. "Ihren Pass bitte." The police officer held up his hand, stopping Brian. "Huh?" Brian looked at the officer "Kann Ich bitte Ihren Pass sehen?" The German repeated, noticeably annoyed. "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't speak any German." The man showed a hint of resignation and uttered "Your passport please." "OK, sorry about that. Here you go!" Brian gave the officer his passport and were soon handed it back to him. "Thank you." With that the officer dismissed him. Brian continued on into the large check-in area, in search for the person which had been sent there to pick him up. It wouldn't be any of the boys. Nick wouldn't attend due to obvious reasons and the rest of the guys were busy with promotional stuff, so it'd just be a driver there to get him. At the far left exit stood a middle-aged man in a black suite holding a sign with the name 'Mr Tyrell' written on it. That was the man Brian was looking for. The name was of course a fake, no point in drawing more attention to himself. "Mr Littrell?" The man questioned as Brian walked up to him. "Yes." "Hello. My name is Ulrich, I'll be your driver for today. I have the car parked outside, so if you'd please follow me.". The driver took Brian's bag from him and started walking to the exit. The driver held open the door to the limousine for Brian, the black limousine was of the same type Nick had been travelled in and it didn't linger for long in the parking spot. Halfway to the hotel, Brian got an idea and he reached for the phone and pressed 0. The driver answered immediately. "Yes?" Brian gave the driver some instructions. "Certainly, sir." said the driver and soon he cut some lanes, heading off of the autobahn. They were going to a nearby mall. Brian stepped out of the car as it stopped outside the Citti grossmarkt, a local mall. "I'll be right back." Brian told the driver and headed off. About ten minutes later Brian was back, carrying a large plastic bag. He jumped in to the car and told the driver to go. Brian was very satisfied with what he had bought, if this didn't cheer up Nick then he didn't know what would! Brian was sitting by the window, almost pressing himself at it, when the limousine arrived at the hotel. Brian looked up at the huge glass building, he knew that somewhere in there was Nick, feeling miserable. Brian couldn't comprehend how all this had happened. Nick was always so cheerful and perky. Brian didn't think there was anything in this world that could bring Nick down. True, Nick did have his moments, but all Brian had to do was to sit and look at him for a couple of minutes and then Nick would be smiling again. Nick was always so happy it seemed to Brian. Little did Brian know that it was all a charade by Nick. Not all of it though, Nick was truly happy by being together with Brian. It was when he wasn't near Brian that Nick was no longer the youthful person full of life that Brian knew. When the car drove underground, Brian sat in the back, contemplating the situation. Perhaps it wasn't as bad as Jim had led him to believe? *** "You can't tell me that he's fine. I've known Nick for more than seven years now! The way he acted at the airport and hotel suggests that he's NOT OK!" Kevin was practically screaming at Jim over the phone. Kevin had taken some minutes between appearences to call Nicks room and check how he was doing. To Kevin's annoyance, Jim had answered again and once again refused Kevin to speak with Nick. Jim told Kevin that Nick was having a sore throat and couldn't speak, it would probably also be for the best if they didn't stop by to see Nick. The risk of everyone else getting ill was too great, and besides, Nick was doing fine Jim told him. That's when Kevin blew up. "I've got the situation under control. A doctor will be over today to give him some medicine. There's no need for you to worry, I'll take care of it." Jim sounded calm, but he was seriously worried about Kevins reaction. He wouldn't be able to fight him off much longer. "He didn't have a sore throat in the ride from the airport. Granted, he didn't speak much, but he did speak!" "Err.." Jim didn't know what he'd say to that. His great plan was proving to lack some elements, it had seemed to be a very plausible excuse. A sore throat ought to have made the rest back off, unfortunately Jim had underestimated Kevins persistence. "No, but it went really fast... Suddenly his voice just disappeared." "His voice just disappeared?" "Yeah." "And that explains the way he acted?" Jim was starting to feel cornered, Kevin was catching on to his lie. "Yes." Jim uttered, the defeat showing. "That's it. I'm coming over when we get back to the hotel!" Kevin's anger was mixed with the feeling of victory as he had defeated Jim. He had known the whole time that the bodyguard wasn't telling him the truth, now it was just a matter of finding out what had really happened. Jim stood with the phone in his hand. He had lost. Now he was just praying that Brian would get here before the others did. Nick's condition had improved dramatically over the night, that is; he no longer cried uncontrollably. Just a single tear would escape his eyes from time to time. But Nick was an empty shell. He just laid there in bed. It had gotten so far that Jim no longer trusted Nick to be alone a single second, Jim feared that he'd try to take his life. "How are you doing, Nick?" Jim let his hand brush through Nicks golden hair. No response, Nick just looked on into nowhere. Jim spoke softly with compassion in his voice, "I sure hope Brian will be able to fix you, buddy." The mentioning of Brian made Nick stirr a bit and he turned slightly towards where Jim was sitting. With eyes drenched in sadness Nick looked upon Jim and asked him, "Where's Brian?" Jim couldn't help but smile, Nick hadn't said a word for well over eight hours and it sounded as sweet music for Jim to hear him speak again. Perhaps whatever haunted Nick was finally beginning to fade away! "Brian's on his way, he should be here any minute now!" "Oh." Nick let his head fall back again, returning to his previous state of mind. "No you don't!" Jim had catched on to what was about to happen and he was determined not to let him go again. He grabbed a hold of Nick and shook him until Nick made eye contact again. "That's better." Jim was frantically searching his mind for something to talk to Nick about to make him alert, preventing him from drifting away. "Boy, was Kevin upset with me or what? At one time I was convinced that he'd actually break the door down to get in here!" joked Jim. "Yeah," Nick answered weakly. "He can be pretty determined at times." "You're telling me that!" Jim kept the conversation going, he felt Nick opening up. "I'm surprised he hasn't showed up here yet!". Jim kept up his conversation with Nick and every minute it seemed opened up Nick even more. The sadness remained, but well under control. After about ten minutes there was a knock on the door. "Hang on there, I'll just get the door." Jim told Nick, "Don't go anywhere!". Nick smiled half-heartedly at Jim's joke. Nick was feeling better, but not as good as he had let Jim believe. His heart was still filled with grief. It was clear to Nick though that he was beginning to gain control over his emotions again. What had happened earlier was probably some kind of a safety valve letting off some pressure. In some way, Nick guessed it was good for him to let go of some steam. It had been building up for several years now, although more rapidly over the last few years. Mostly because the group hadn't been out touring as much as they used to, meaning that Nick didn't get to be with Brian as much as he wanted. As time passed on, Nick got more and more certain that it was all over. Brian would soon be there. Nick accepted the fact that he'd, as Nick believed, probably looked like a dork to Brian for what had happened. Here he drags Brian halfway across the earth and, as it turns out, for seemingly nothing. But Nick didn't have a doubt in his mind that Brian would forgive him. The sensation of relief was overwhelming when Jim opened the door and found Brian standing in the hallway, holding a large plastic bag. "Thank god you're here!" Jim stepped out in to the hallway, closing the door behind him. "I was afraid it'd be Kevin." said Jim. "Why?" Brian was confused. Why would Jim have feared it being Kevin? Jim looked troubled, "As I said, Nick has asked me to not tell any of the others about what has happened. But Kevin is really hard to keep away, he's been ready to break down the door several times already. I'm pretty certain that he no longer buys my lie." "Oh, yeah Kevin can be like that at times." Brian knew his cousin well, well enough to know that Kevin didn't budge. If he had decided to see Nick, then there would be nothing anyone could do to stop him. "How's Nick doing?" Brian continued, he hoped with all his heart for a positive answer. Jim's face shone up again, "He's doing better! I've managed to get him to talk again, I think the worst has passed. I'm really sorry about making you come here, but at the time it seemed..." Brian interrupted him. "You did nothing wrong. Nick wanted me, no - needed me here and I will be there for him. Thank you for everything you've done. It's well over the call of duty." Brian was genuinely grateful for what Jim had done for Nick. "Is he in there?" Brian asked Jim. "Yes, go right in!" said Jim enthusiastically as he held open the door to Brian. Brian stepped into the room. On the bed in front of him sat Nick, looking out the window. Brian smiled when he saw Nick, he had missed him. "Nick!". Nick jumped at the sound of the voice calling his name, he quickly recognised the voice. "Brian!" Nick jumped out of the bed and saw Brian standing there, smiling. "I'm back." Brian said as he went over to Nick, embracing him in a hug. They just stood there for several minutes, holding eachother. Nick couldn't believe his luck, he had missed this so much. He had missed the touch of Brian, he had missed Brian's voice, he had missed the wonderful scent of Brian and most of all, he had missed Brian. Nick just stood there, letting himself disappear into the safe haven of Brian's comforting embrace, sheltering him from all that is evil. As he remained there, Nick felt his barrier he had built was staggering. The enormous pressure of his hidden emotions was taking its toll. They were breaking free once again. But this time it was different, Nick didn't want it to stop. He felt safe, he just let it flow. Nick started to cry uncontrollably. Brian stood in the middle of the room, holding Nick and rocking him slowly. It felt as if Nick was holding onto him for dear life. Suddenly Nick began crying. "Nick, What's wrong?" Brian was worried and about to release his grip when Nick spoke. "Hold me... Don't let go." Nick let out between sobs. Brian immediately tightened his grip. "I won't." said Brian. He searched the room for Jim, but he was nowhere to be found. 'Damn, he must have left when I got in.' Brian didn't know what to do, but he did know that they couldn't keep standing like this. Slowly, Brian began moving towards the bed, bringing Nick with him. "OK, Nick. Now I'm just going to let go for a little while, so that we can sit down on the bed, 'K?". Nick nodded slowly in response. "All right, here we go." Brian sat down on the bed, with his back against the wall. "Come here, Nicky." Brian positioned Nick so he would lay in Brian's lap, resting his head on Brian's chest. Brian wrapped his arms around Nick once again. "Life sure suck at some times, huh Nick?" Brian spoke with compassion to Nick, trying to comfort him. "Yeah, it sure does..." Brian answered himself quietly as he let his hand play with Nick's hair. He felt sorry for Nick. "How are you doing, Nick? Is there something I can do for you, anything?" asked Brian. "No. Just stay here, please." Nick let out weakly. "Sure." Brian had many more questions lingering in his mind, but he didn't want to push Nick. Now he just settled with holding Nick, waiting for Nick to make a move. After they had sat there in bed for well over an hour, Nick suddenly spoke. "Thank you for being here." Nick didn't move or anything, he just quietly uttered those words. Brian looked down at Nick laying there, "I'll always be here for you Nicky, no matter what." ******** To be continued ______________________________________________________________________________ Wanna know what will happen in part 4?
