I had originally intended to release this before Christmas as an early gift to al my loyal readers, but things got hectic here, and I wasn't able to finish it for the deadline I had planned on. But I finally found time after Christmas to finish writing it, and now you get to have it to start the New Year off. I think that is pretty cool personally. This story is special for quite a few reasons. The first reason is that it takes place in the past. Quite a few readers were starting to get interested in Dustin's past when he was having memory flashbacks after he was hit by a car. They became even more interested when I showed a few short glimpses of what you could have seen in the first chapter had those scenes been written. So, I hope this can answer some of the questions some of you have sent me about Dustin's past, and the specifics of his friendship with Jeff, and the relationship he had with Stephanie prior to his meeting with Kevin in Orlando.*** So now without further delay I present to you the very special prequel chapter of Kevin and Dustin, perfectly entitled "In The Beginning." In The Beginning By: NM ****Dustin**** It was so hard to believe I was going to be starting school again in a few short weeks. Actually less than 3 weeks would begin my senior year of highschool. But, at least I would begin my final year of highschool the best way possible. It would begin with the greatest friend I've ever had in my whole life. Jeff, as I said, was the greatest friend anyone could ever have. We have had 17 years of memories together, and its almost sad to say that since he will be going off to NYU for college a year from now, we won't get to spend time together anymore. I don't think it is possible to have a friend who could be more loyal and nice as Jeff. We've been friends from birth. He was born a few weeks after I was, and our mothers were best friends throughout their childhood and highschool and still are to this day. His dad and my mom dated for a few months when she was a freshman and he was a junior, but that changed when she met my dad. He transferred in halfway through the year as a senior, and to make a long story short my mom got with him. They stayed together all throughout his and my mothers college education and eventually got married and had Kelly, my sister, and me. Jeff's dad started dating his mother toward the end of his junior year, and they got married when she was a senior in college. It's kind of surprising that Jeff isn't older than I am, but his parents wanted to wait until they were stable before bringing another mouth to feed and person to clothe into the world. Its no surprise that Jeff's parents are my godparents and my parents are Jeff's godparents. From the instant we could walk, which he could walk a few months before me, or so I'm told, we went everywhere together. Of course as all friends do, we had our fights and problems along the way. But we got through each and every one of them. We almost let Stephanie, a good friend to both of us, tear up a lifelong friendship of what had been 15 years. During our freshmen year, my interest in Stephanie started growing beyond its platonic boundaries. Apparently, Jeff wasn't too happy with that. He had had a crush on Stephanie since the beginning of 8th grade, and here I came swooping down, and managed to win her over as he said. For awhile Jeff wouldn't talk to me, because he says I ruined his chances with her. But eventually we worked everything out, and he found his own girlfriend. Stephanie is truly the greatest girlfriend in the world. She's sweet, kind, loving, smart, funny; she has a quirky sense of humor. And she has the most beautiful violet eyes. And this doesn't happen because of contacts, her eyes are naturally violet. I am so lucky to have her. She could easily date anyone she wanted, because it seemed as if everyone wanted to date her almost, yet she choose me, and that makes me the happiest guy on the planet. "So are you ready to start our senior year together." I asked Stephanie as she sat in my arms. "You and me." "Oh Dustin." Stephanie sighed. "There's something we need to talk about." She said as she became tense in my embrace. "What is it?" I asked from behind while rubbing my cheek against hers as I still held her. "About us." She said pulling away and escaping from my grasp. She turned around and sat across from me with a serious expression on her face. Her eyes had changed. They were still that beautiful violet color they had always been but something was missing from them. Something I had seen in them for the past 3 years. Something important was missing from her eyes that had always spoken volumes when I looked at her. "What's wrong?" I finally asked. "Dustin, this is our senior year." She stated. "And things are wonderful between us." "They are, and I'm glad." I agreed with her. "But there are going to be some changes. And I think it would benefit us both in the long run, if we made them now, and not later." She said twisting the ring around on her finger that I had given her on her birthday. "What kind of changes?" I asked quietly. "Serious changes." She replied. "Dustin, I think we need to separate." She cringed as she spoke. "Separate? As in break up?" I asked with a shocked and speechless expression on my face. "Dustin, its not that I don't love you," She said, "Because I do love you, I love you so much." She said. "You have a funny way of showing it." I said furiously while standing up from the ground. "Dustin please." She said standing up after me. "Please let me explain." She begged. I just nodded, to angry to say anything. I took a step back as she started to reach for me. I saw sadness flash across her face, but she composed herself quickly, before continuing. "Dustin, I'm going to school at Northwestern next year." She said. "As if I didn't know that already." I interrupted. "Yes, I know you know." She answered. "But you are going off on your own for college. And rather have us break up at the end of the year, I thought it would be better if we do it now." She stated. "That doesn't make much sense. No one said we had to break up to begin with." I argued. "Dustin, can you tell me with complete honesty that you could do the long distance relationship with me going to school 6 hours away, and you going...well where ever it is you are going to go." She asked. "We could try." I simply stated. This was a losing battle for me, but I didn't want to admit that completely so I kept on fighting. "Dustin, I know this hurts. It hurts me a lot too. But I don't want you last memory of me before I leave to be one of anger." She stated. "This way, we have a whole year we can spend together just as friends." She added. "I know." I agreed with her silently. "I knew this was coming. I could see it in your eyes." I stated. "How...how could you see it in my eyes?" She questioned. "The love was gone." I stated simply. "Yes, you still love me as a friend," I agreed with her on that, "But the love that began three years ago, and grew was gone." I told her. "And people thought we would be the couple most likely to break up." She joked. That was our thing. Everyone, and I mean everyone, saw us as the unstoppable couple. The couple other couples envy. The couple that would never break up. And here we are...breaking up. Right before our last year of highschool. "Please tell me we can still be friends." She pleaded in a desperate tone. "If I cant have you as a girlfriend, then I damn better have you as a friend. Because I won't settle for losing you completely." I answered her. "I don't want to lose you as a friend either." Stephanie agreed. "Well, we need to get going. Jeff had something he wanted to do." I replied. "Ya." She said putting her shoes back on while I folded up the blanket we brought. We carried all of the things back to my car and placed it in the trunk. I walked around and got in the car and started the engine. When we got back to her house I helped her carry her things in. As I was sitting on her bed she was twisting the same ring on her finger again. "Maybe I should give this back to you." She said starting to remove the ring. "No." I interjected as I jumped off of the bed. "Keep it. To remember me by." I said grasping onto her hand and sliding the ring back onto her finger. "Ok." She replied quietly. I stared into her violet eyes and slowly began to lean closer to her. This would be the last kiss we would share together. My lips touched her glossy pink lips and I gently pushed my tongue past her lips one last time. I withdrew and pulled back and looked at her still leaning up with her eyes closed. She slowly opened her eyes and looked up at me. "Bye Dustin." She said softly. "No," I replied. "Not good-bye." I said rubbing her cheek with my hand, "We never have to say good-bye to eachother, because we are still going to be friends." I reminded her. "The best of friends." She whispered into my ear. I let go of her hand and moved my hand away from her face and turned toward the door. I opened it and began to walk out of her room. I was standing in the hallway on the other side of her doorway when I turned to look at her again. "You're still my girl." I whispered. She turned to look at me once more. "Always." She replied with a small smile. I left her door and walked back to my car and got in and started the engine and proceeded back to my house. I got in and there was a message from my mom laying on the counter next to the phone. Dustin, Jeff wants you to call him. We went to eat dinner. See you soon. Love, Mom & Dad I finished reading the note and grabbed the phone. I dialed Jeff's number and waited for someone to pick up the phone. "Hello?" I heard Jeff's voice on the line. "Hey Jeff. It's Dustin. My mom left a note telling me to call you back." I explained. "What's up?" "Listen Dustin, I can't really think of any way to say this. So I'm just going to say it." Jeff said. "Say what?" I asked starting to worry. "Jeff, what's going on?" I asked starting to get concerned. "We're moving in two weeks." Jeff stated. "You guys are moving?" I asked taken back by the statement. "Ya." He replied solemnly. "Where are you moving to?" I inquired. "My dad got a new job offer in Seattle. The law firm that wants him is offering him a six-figure salary plus benefits and to be a junior partner." He explained. "Wow, that's great. Tell your dad I said congratulations." I replied in a solemn tone. "Its not great Dustin." Jeff screamed into the phone. "It's my senior year, and I'm moving across the country." He continued to talk. "This is beyond great. I was hoping to finish out my senior year with my best friend, but that doesn't look like it will be happening after all." He replied sadly. "It will be okay Jeff." I said trying to brighten his mood. "We can e-mail eachother and write letters, call." I told him. "We don't have to lose contact just because you are moving." I explained to him. "I just wish it wasn't happening before my senior year." Jeff complained. "I can understand that." I agreed with him. Until today I had a girlfriend and best friend who I would start and finish my senior year with. Now, towards the end of the day, I learned that I would no longer have a girlfriend to start the year with, and that my best friend was moving across the country to Seattle, Washington. "So, when are you guys moving?" I asked almost dreading the answer to the question I was about to receive. "We move in two weeks." He replied in a whisper. "My parents already have a house, and they have two families looking at our house." He added. "Dustin, I...uh...I need to go." Jeff said in a hurried tone. "Is everything all right?" I asked with concern. "Ya, I just need to go." He replied. "I'll call you later. Bye." He said hanging up the phone. "Bye." I said after he had already disconnected. Talk about losing it after he disconnected. I guess it was just the timing. I had broken up with Stephanie less than an hour ago, and now the person I trusted the most was moving across the country. And to make it worse, we wouldn't be able to finish our education together. I was really looking forward to all the things we would do together as seniors in highschool. Of course I still had all my other friends, but without Jeff, everything seemed different. I heard a knock at the door interrupt me from my deep thoughts. I quickly wiped away the tears that were starting to form. "Come in." I said sitting up straight on my bed. "Hey bro, what's up?" Kelly asked entering my room. "Not much. I just broke up with Stephanie, and Jeff is moving." I whispered to her as she sat down on my bed next to me. "Oh Dustin," She said embracing me in a hug, "I'm so sorry bro." She said. "Its all right." I whimpered. "I was just looking forward to starting my last year of highschool with my girlfriend and best friend...now my dreams have been shattered." I said as I felt the tear hit my arm. "Ok, what I'm going to say might not sound as great as it would have but, Mom says I have to tell you anyway." Kelly said looking at me. "What's going on?" I asked looking up at her. "Well, Mom wanted me to tell you that we are going to Florida for vacation." She said. "Where are we going in Florida?" I asked starting to get a bit more intrigued. "Orlando, Florida. Home of Universal, Disney, and a bunch of other cool stuff." She grinned. "Sounds like it will be a blast." I agreed in a non enthusiastic tone. "When are we leaving?" I inquired. "We are gone the week before school starts for you." She informed me. "That's the week Jeff is leaving." I told her. "Well, I just came up to tell you that." She said rising from my bed, "If you want to talk to someone, I'm here for you." She offered. "Thanks," I replied, "But I'm fine, really." I convinced her. The truth was that I was sort of fine, but I was also sad too. But that's to be expected, isn't it? ****Kevin**** A plane had just touched down at the airport in Orlando. The plane slowly taxied to the gate and allowed the first class passengers to disembark first. Five tiresome men slowly walked off the airplane into the crowded airport. "I'm so glad to finally be back." The Latin man whispered. "Me too Howie. Me too." Agreed the youngest one. "We all know why you want to be back Nick." One of them commented. "You are just gonna go home and dive right into your new video games." He commented with a southern drawl. "So, and you know you will be right there playing them with me Brian." Nick shot back. Brian smiled toward Nick and looked off to his other two friends. `Oh, Kevin, what is wrong?' He asked looking at the older man, who was also his cousin. Brian slowly approached his cousin and his other friend, "Hey AJ, mind if I steal my cousin for a minute?" Brian requested. "Nah, go ahead. I've gotta tell Howie something." AJ replied walking away. "What did you want cuz?" Kevin asked as he looked at the younger man before him. "To know if you are all right." Brian said simply. "Kevin, toward the end of the tour you did a complete 180 on us. It's almost as if you weren't interested in the tour anymore." Brian said. "I'm a little worried." He whispered with concern. "Come on," Kevin said pulling his cousin by his arm, "lets get our luggage and get home, and we can talk more about this then." Kevin offered. "All right." Brian agreed as they returned to the rest of their friends. They headed to the luggage carousel and retrieved their bags their security escorted them to their ride back to their homes. Howie was dropped off first, followed by Nick, then AJ. Kevin and Brian rode back to Kevin's house so they could talk. Kevin sat his bag down and reached into his pocket to retrieve the key to his apartment so he could unlock the door. He turned the key inside the locking mechanism and then removed it and opened the door to his apartment and allowed Brian to enter first. Kevin picked up his luggage and followed his cousin and shut the door. "Make yourself at home Bri. I'm gonna set these in my room." Kevin said as he walked down the hallway of his home to his room. Once he sat his luggage down, he headed into the kitchen, "Cuz, do you want something to drink?" Kevin yelled out to Brian who was sitting in the living room. "Sure," Brian replied standing from the couch and walking into the kitchen to join Kevin, "what do you have?" he asked as he watched Kevin look through the refrigerator. "I've got Coke, Sprite, water, and lemonade." He replied as he removed his head from the refrigerator to look at his cousin for his decision. "I'll take a Sprite." Brian replied after contemplating his choices. Kevin reached into the refrigerator and pulled two Sprites out and handed one to his cousin. Kevin popped the tab of the soda can and took a drink to quench his thirst. "Thanks." Brian replied after taking a sip of his Sprite as well. "Do you want to talk in here, or the living room?" Kevin asked his younger cousin. "We can talk where ever is most comfortable for you." Brian replied. "Living room." Kevin stated and then started walking toward the couch. Brian followed him from the kitchen and sat down on the couch next to his older and troubled looking cousin. "What's the matter Kevin?" Brian questioned with concern. "What happened toward the end of the tour that made you so down?" "I got lonely." Kevin stated simply. "You're just lonely?" Brian asked. Kevin nodded his head before taking another drink of his Sprite. Brian spoke up, "Well why didn't you just say so? I'm sure we could have arranged for Kristin to come see you for a few days." Brian suggested. "She and I broke up before the tour started." Kevin revealed slowly. "You broke up?" Brian asked in shock. "I didn't know that." Brian added. "Why didn't you tell me?" Kevin shrugged his shoulders in response to Brian's question. "What happened?" He asked his cousin. "Things just weren't working out." Kevin replied. "But I thought you loved her?" Brian stated. "I did love her...and I still do, just not in a romantic way." Kevin revealed. "It's more of a platonic love." Kevin informed his cousin. "Why all the realizations now?" Brian asked taking a sip of his drink. "Because now is the time I accepted it." Kevin stated. "Accepted what?" "That I'm gay." Kevin whispered. Brian's drink escaped from his mouth as he almost choked on it as he heard Kevin say the words. His soda was now all over the floor and coffee table. "You're what?" Brian asked. "I'm gay." Kevin whispered. "Please don't be mad." He pleaded. "Kev, come here." Brian said embracing his cousin in a tight hug. "I could never be mad at you for that. I'm mad at you for not telling me sooner though." Brian joked with a playful punch to his cousin's shoulder. "Thanks for not being mad." Kevin replied hugging Brian again. "But I couldn't have told you sooner, since I just now began to accept it." Kevin rationalized. "True," Brian agreed. "But Kevin," Brian said in a more serious tone, "I could never be mad at you over this." Brian said to him. "NEVER." He said once more with a firmer tone of voice. "I'm glad." Kevin said relieved. "Well," Brian said standing from the couch and taking his final drink of his Sprite, "I need to get home. I want to unpack and sleep." Brian said as he was walking to the kitchen to recycle the can. "Let me grab my keys and I'll drive you." Kevin said standing from the couch as well. Kevin walked down the hall and entered his bedroom and retrieved his keys from his dresser and met Brian at the door. "Ready?" Kevin asked jiggling the keys in front of the younger man. "Yup." Brian replied with a smile. The two left Kevin's apartment and got into Kevin's car, and Kevin drove Brian to his place. "You want to come in for a bit?" Brian asked. "Nah, I want to get back, and take a nap." Kevin responded. "Ok. Talk to you later Kev." Brian said getting out of the car. He opened the back door and got his bags out. "Thanks for dropping me off." Brian grinned. "No problem. Bye cuz." Kevin said. "Bye." Brian said as he shut the door. Kevin drove off and headed back to his apartment to unpack and then take a nap, and not necessarily in that order. ****Dustin**** This was it. Today was the day my life changed once again. Today was the day Jeff and his family would be moving across the country so his father could start his new job as a junior partner in a Seattle law firm. I had driven over to Jeff's house early in the day for his going away party that our friends and I had planned for him and the rest of his family. But they all left close to an hour ago. It was just Jeff and I sitting on the floor of his now barren room. This room was home to 17 years of memories between us. Its hard to believe there wouldn't be any more memories of us in this house together after he left. We had spent the past hour sitting Indian style across from each other as we talked and reminisced about the past, and some of the things we had done together over the years. "Oh, remember the time during our eighth grade year when we one our events at State for track." He reminded me. "Ya, that was a pretty awesome day." I agreed. "How about afterward at out little victory celebration with Heather and Mike?" Jeff reminded me. "That was definitely one of the best times." I agreed with him. I saw a smile form on his lips as he stared at me. "What are you thinking about?" I asked as I stared back at him. "You." He replied. He looked shocked for a moment that he had said that. "I'm thinking how much I'm going to miss you." He added quickly. "I'm gonna miss you to, but remember we can e-mail and call eachother." I reminded him that we wouldn't lose complete contact. "And besides you guys will come visit your grandparents right?" I asked. "Ya, definitely." He replied. "Mom would die if she didn't see grandma and grandpa." He added with a laugh. "Then we can always do something when you come visit." I told him. That brought and even bigger smile to his face, "You bet." He said. "You know Dust--" He began but was interrupted with a knock on the door. He turned and looked toward the door. His smile fell, and a look of sadness immediately washed over his face. "Come in." He replied. The door opened and his mom walked in. "Honey, we need to leave." She said as she looked down at us on the floor in his empty room. "Ok." He whispered as he started to stand. I stood with him and we watched as she walked out of the room leaving the door open for us to follow. "What were you going to tell me?" "Oh, um...just that...I...love you." He whispered. "I love you too man." I said as I moved toward him and embraced him in a hug. "You are my brother, maybe not biologically, but you are in my heart." I whispered into his ear. I could feel a tear drop on my neck and his arms became tighter around me. "Don't cry. You will make me start." I whispered as I pulled out of the hug. I saw a tear trickle down his face and watched as he moved his hand to wipe it away. He smiled a small smile before heading for the door. I followed him out of his room for the last time. We walked down the stairs and through the living room and outside to the car. It was loaded with some of their clothes and their personal items, while everything else like furniture and other things were being shipped to Seattle. Jeff pulled me into another hug before he stepped inside the car. He whispered something, but I wasn't able to make it out. He looked for a moment, then frowned and got in the car. I went around and gave his mom a hug before she got in the car. "Good luck in Seattle." I said as I ended the hug. "Thank you sweetie. Good luck with your senior year." She smiled. "Thanks." I replied. I went around and shook Jeff's dad's hand and he pulled me into a quick hug. "Thank you for being my son's best friend." He said. "He's been a wonderful best friend for me to. I'm going to miss him a lot." I answered. He got in his car, and I waved as they backed out of their driveway for the very last time. I could see Jeff staring out of the car. He waved to me as they drove down the street and out of our neighborhood. I walked over to my car, and got in and drove home. ****Kevin**** "So, anything special you want to do?" Brian asked as he sat down on the couch in his cousin's apartment as Kevin went to get them both glasses of water. "Why, anything special you want to do?" Kevin asked from in the kitchen. "Well, I thought that you and I could go to this new club I heard about." Brian replied. "Its got a mixed crowd, so we could find someone for you to get to know." Brian winked at his cousin as he entered the living room with their drinks. "No, Brian." Kevin replied in a strong voice. "Management and the label would have a fit if we went to a bar like that. Especially if they found out before I would tell them about my sexuality." Kevin said after taking a drink of his ice water. Brian also took a drink of his ice water. It soothed his dry throat from the heat during their game of basketball from earlier in the park. "Come on Kev...you need to get out there and meet some people." Brian tried to convince him. "I don't feel like dating." Kevin replied sourly. "I'm not in date mode." "Perhaps, you need to `date' to get in `date' mode." Brian grinned. Kevin grunted at his cousin's futile attempt to get him to go out. "Will you at least consider doing something with me and the guys while we are on break?" Brian requested. "Sure," Kevin agreed, "As long as it doesn't include clubbing, bar hopping, or picking up guys," Kevin said laying down the ground rules. "Cuz, you are no fun." Brian pouted. "Well, Nick and I were definitely going to go to Universal Studios. You wouldn't have to come with us, because he wants to go early, but you could meet us there somewhere." Brian said as he took another drink of his water. "It could be fun. Count me in." Kevin said. "Good." Brian cheered. "You are going to have fun." Brian smiled. "Thanks for the hospitality and all, but I need to get home and shower." Brian said standing up. Kevin leaned in towards his cousin, "Ya, I agree. You reek Bri." Kevin joked. "Well, you don't smell like roses either." Brian laughed. "I'll talk to you later Brian. Call me and let me know when we will do the Universal thing." Kevin said as he stood and walked his cousin to the door. "I will. Talk to you later." Brian said leaving his cousin's apartment. "Bye." Kevin replied while shutting the door. He dumped the water into the sink and placed the cup into the dishwasher and proceeded to the bathroom. He set the temperature to a comfortable setting before slipping inside to wash away the sweat and dirt from his basketball game with Brian. ****Dustin**** "Dustin are you all packed to go to Orlando?" My mom asked coming into my room. "Yes, Mom." I replied. "I'm ready." "Good." She smiled. "Be sure to go to bed at a decent hour tonight. You don't want to be grumpy tomorrow." "I will Mom, I promise." I responded. "Ok." She said closing the door to my room. I had been spending most of my time in my room since Jeff had left. Nothing felt the same now that he wasn't here anymore. I didn't feel like thinking about it anymore. I undressed and got my pajamas on, and turned off the light in my room. I walked over to my bed and pulled the covers back and slowly slid in, like I had done every night since the day Jeff left. I pulled the covers over my body and stared out of the window by my bed. The moon was casting a white glow in my room as I stared up at it. It truly was a beautiful sight to see. Luna truly was a remarkably beautiful thing in the night sky. ****Kevin**** "Hey Kev, what's going on?" Brian asked over the phone. "I was just getting ready to go to sleep. Its 11:00 and I'm still exhausted from today." Kevin replied. "Are you glad you told Howie and AJ?" Brian asked bringing up the talk the four of them had had today without Nick present. "Yes, I'm glad they know. I just wish I could have told Nick." Kevin replied. "It doesn't feel right that all of you guys know now except him." Kevin stated. "I know, but we all agreed that it would be best for Nick not to know right now. You can tell him later." Brian replied. "When Bri, when I show up with my boyfriend in tow?" Kevin asked sarcastically. "You have a boyfriend?" Brian asked shocked. "Tell me all about him." He demanded. "I don't have a boyfriend Brian. You of all people should know that by now." Kevin scolded him. "Whatever." Brian replied. "Was there a purpose to your call?" Kevin asked more seriously. "Yes, Nick and I decided that we will be going to Universal the day after tomorrow. You said you would go, and I've already told Nick you are coming, so you cant back out now." Brian stated. "I wasn't planning on backing out." Kevin replied honestly. "Unless there is an ulterior motive for you wanting me to be at Universal other than to have fun." Kevin replied. "Kev, there are a lot of gay people who go to Universal. You never know what might happen." Brian spoke. "And with my luck there would be an undercover reporter there watching me. I can see the headlines now. `Eldest Backstreet Boy gay. Picks up lover at Universal.'" Kevin joked. "Good headline, want me to call the tabloids now or then?" Brian joked. "Call them, and they and MTV get those pictures of you at the VMAs from last year." Kevin threatened. "You wouldn't?" Brian protested. "Try me." Kevin responded. "Oh all right, I won't call the tabloids." Brian replied with fake disappointment. "Good. Now I'm going to bed. I'll probably meet you guys somewhere at Universal then." Kevin replied. "Ok, just call us, and let us know when and where, I'll have my cell with me." Brian ordered. "Will do. Night Bri." Kevin said. "Night cuz." Brian replied hanging up the phone. Kevin placed the cordless back on the cradle on the nightstand next to his bed. He slowly moved his eyes to look at the clock. The green halogen lights displayed 11:26. Kevin turned onto his other side and pulled the covers up to his chest and curled up into a fetal position and slowly fell back into his deep slumber.
