I promised I'd try to get this out as soon as possible, so here it is. Chapter four. The beginning might be a bit boring, but it's just to give you some background information. Enjoy! ---------------------------------- At age 25, Jacob Christopher Kensington was the youngest psychiatrist at Mercy Hospital. Intelligent, good-looking, and rather well off, he was the target of envy for is fellow doctors and admired by all the nurses. Sometimes the irony of it all would strike Jake so hard that he'd almost laugh. 'If only they knew.' He'd think. If only they knew that his life hadn't always been that perfect. As a sophomore in high school, he had come out to his parents, who in turn had kicked him out. Being the conscientious student he was, he continued going to school and somehow managed to graduate with honors. Due to his commitment and good grades, he had earned himself a full scholarship to a med school. There he completed all the required courses within three years. After his graduation, he was once again on the streets. Just when he was about to hit rock bottom, he was contacted by his parent's lawyer, who announced to him that his parents had died in a plane crash and left the estate and all the money to him. Jake sold the estate and bought a town house close to the hospital. Soon he became the most valuable psychiatrist there, and that's where he was now. Only very few people knew his story. One of them was his best friend Jacquelyn, a nurse at the hospital. "Jack, your coffee break is over. You should come with me to look at the new patient." Jake said as he entered the room, pouring a cup of coffee for himself. "You mean the one in room 109? What's his story anyway? He came in this morning, right?" Jack asked, looking up from the newspaper she had been reading. "Yeah, that's him. He's some famous kid, and he tried to commit suicide for whatever reason. His management gave us one month to 'fix' him. " Jake didn't try to hide the annoyed tone in his voice. "One month? That's impossible. Who is he anyway?" Jack got up and followed Jake to room 109. "Justin something. He sings in a band. I wonder what happened to him." Jake opened the door and entered. Jack stopped dead in her tracks as she laid her eyes on the young man sleeping in the bed. "Justin something? Jake, that's Justin Timberlake! The guy from NSYNC! You should have recognized the name." Jack exclaimed. "Jack, just because I'm gay, that doesn't mean that I listen to boybands. Not that it matters who he is anyway. He's a patient just like any other who has a few problems that I'm going to help him get over." "You sound too professional. C'mon, admit it, the kid is damn cute." Jack couldn't help but smile as she saw the blush creeping up on Jake's face. "You better be really glad that he's still in a coma, cuz if he wasn't, I would've had to kill you for that remark." Jake threatened. Jack just shook her head and crossed the room to grab the clipboard on the nightstand. She quickly checked the patient's temperature and adjusted the IV. Through it all, Jake just stood there, staring at Justin. There was something on the young singer's face, as if his whole world had just been shattered and he was in the middle, watching as everything came crashing down around him. And he looked so innocent. Jake sighed. He hated it when he got to attached to a patient and he could tell already that he'd be getting very attached to Justin. Jack gently grabbed his arm and pulled him out of the room. Barely fifteen minutes after they left the room, Justin began to regain consciousness. He felt like he was trapped in some sort of eternal darkness and he was sinking into it deeper and deeper. He somehow knew that vanishing into black nothingness was preferable to waking up. He wanted to get lost in the darkness and forget the turmoil in his mind and the aching in his soul. A dull throbbing pain penetrated his whole body and he wanted to escape from that, too. And then he heard the voices. The sounded far away and oddly familiar. He listened for a while and realized that they were talking about him. "Look at him, Scoop, he looks so helpless. I don't know how we could not have noticed. There must have been signs. We should have noticed something." Chris said, almost sobbing. "We did notice that he wasn't feeling too good, but I had no idea it was that bad. Oh, I wish I knew what was bothering him." Lance whispered. "And *I* wish I knew why Joey and JC said they'd come later. I mean, Josh is Curly's best friend. Why do you think he didn't wanna come with us?" The voices kept on talking, but Justin stopped listening. He suddenly remembered what had happened. He remembered everything. Josh and Joey, his confession, the car, the bridge, and the water. And he knew now why sinking into the darkness was preferable to waking up. Because waking up meant having to face Josh and Joey, and he couldn't do that, not after everything that had happened. -------------------------------------- Ok, now ya know that he's alive. Well, as always, I'd really appreciate some feedback. Take care, j
