It was the imperfect end to a fun day. "You stayed behind. I guess you want to die." "Not tonight," I said. The vampire lunged at me. I grabbed him by his shirt, rolled back, placing my foot in his stomach, and tossed him over my head into the wall. "Nice move. Too bad my buddies didn't like that." I turned around to see several more come over the wall. "Great," I muttered. "Just great." An arrow came out and caught the vampire I flipped into his heart. He turned to dust. All eyes turned in the direction and there stood a red-haired girl wearing a mask, short-sleeved leather button-up shirt, black leather pants, black hunting boots, leather gloves, and a black cape. In her hand was a crossbow, which she had moved and hooked onto her waist. Then she pulled out a wooden stake. "YOU!" the vampires exclaimed in unison. They took off over the wall and she went after them. I ran inside and upstairs to suit up. Lance followed. "What are you doing?" he asked. "Where are you going?" "I have to help her stop the vampires." "Why?" "Lance, this is what I do. You know that. When I'm done, I'll be back." "Promise?" "I promise." I kissed Lance full on the lips and then pulled on my mask. I went to the patio and jumped over the wall. I stretched my mind out and found the location of the vampires. They were at the playground fighting the masked slayer. I ran as fast as I could and when I came on the scene, tackled two vampires. We stood up and I pulled out two wooden stakes. "Is this a private party or can anyone join?" "Thanks for the help," the masked slayer said. "Not a problem." The vampires attacked. One swung a fist at me. I blocked and backhanded him. Then I drove my knee into his stomach. He hunched over and I drove the stake into his heart through his back. I rolled over his back and kicked a vampire in the face just before he turned to dust. The Slayer kicked the vampire in front of her. She used the vampire as a step and brought her other foot up, kicking her in the face, then flipped over. The Slayer turned around quick, staked a vampire, turned back and rammed the stake into the heart of the vampire she had just kicked. The Slayer then ran over to the teeter-totter, placed her hand on the support beam and flipped over it, kicking yet another vampire. She ducked a vampire's attempted punch. Then she spun away from him. Pulling out another stake so she had one in each hand, she stuck them out sideways, staking two vampires on each side of her. Three more vampires surrounded her. I noticed the "down" end of the teeter-totter was right between her legs. "Slayer!" I called out. The Slayer looked at me and I motioned down. She put her foot on it. I jumped into the air, caused myself to lift up above the "up" end of the teeter-totter, and landed on it full force. The Slayer was lifted up into the air and she flipped. I noticed her cape was in the shape of bat's wings. The Slayer landed on the other side of the vampires. Without hesitation, she rammed a stake into one through his back. The two female vampires turned to her. One vampire came up and grabbed me from behind. He squeezed tightly, slowly cutting off my air. The Slayer noticed this and backhanded a vampire. The vampire landed on the "up" end of the teeter-totter that had just flipped the Slayer. I was still standing on the "down" end of the teeter-totter. It shot up in the air taking me with it. The vampire's grip on me was released. I did a back flip and landed. The vampire turned around. I used my full strength and punched the vampire. His head jerked back hard. Then I staked him. I watched as the vampire that the Slayer put on the teeter-totter turned to dust. The Slayer was pulling her stake out of the last vampire and it turned to dust. "Thanks for your help," she said to me. "You're welcome." I approached her. "We've met before, correct?" "Yep. You inspired me to don a mask and costume. Do you like it?" "Sure." I paused for a minute. "Who are you supposed to be?" "Batgirl! Notice the mask looks like a bat. And the cape resembles bat wings." "Yes, they do. Interesting way your costume was put together." "Thanks. Although I can tell you are less than enthused by it. Is it because it's homemade and not cool like yours?" "I didn't say that." "No, you didn't. But you didn't say anything positive about it." "What would you like me to say? It's hip? It's cool? What?" "Forget it." "What were those vampires after?" "Not sure." "Why were they in this area?" "Not sure, either. I was on patrol when I saw them. I followed them and they led me here. Well, to that house down the street." "I saw. That's why I showed up. I had seen what happened." "I appreciate your help. Now, I got to get to my Watcher and see what she can come up with. Perhaps they have an agenda of sorts." "Sometimes they do. Especially when they are concentrated like that. Do you know whose house that is?" "No. Maybe I should find out." "I'll do that. You go back to your Watcher and tell her what happened. Remember any specifics about the vampires." "Um, Batman...you're forgetting I've been trained to do this." "Sorry." "Not a problem." "Where should I meet you after I find out the occupants of the house?" "I'll be downtown...on the rooftops. Just look around up there and you'll find me." "Okay." Batgirl left and, when I was sure she was gone, I headed back to the house. I jumped the wall in the back and went up to the door. I slid it open and was met with a cross in my face. Though the cross isn't scary to me, the suddenness of seeing it pop in my face like that startled me. "Easy, Lance. It's me." "Oh." I entered and pulled off my mask. "Are you okay?" "Yes, I'm fine. How about you?" I asked. "I'm okay. What happened?" "It appears the Slayer in Orlando is none other than Batgirl. And it seems the vampires were specifically coming here." "To kill us?" "Possibly. Batgirl went to her Watcher to discuss it. I'm going to meet up with them and find out what's going on. I'm sorry. I don't know what time I'll be back." "Okay." I could tell by the look on Lance's face that he was less than thrilled with the prospect of me being gone all night. "I'm sorry," I said taking him into my arms. "I wish it were different. But this is what I have to do." "I know. I just wish you were with me, instead. At least you are not going out to nightclubs or bars. You're doing something good for the city." "Yeah. I love you...always. You know that, don't you?" "Yeah, I know that." Lance smiled. "Good." I kissed him, returned my mask to my face and went out the door. I patrolled the rooftops until I found Batgirl standing on the rooftops with another female wearing an overcoat. "Batgirl," I said. Both ladies turned. "Hello, Batman. This is Kara, my Watcher." "Nice to meet you." "Likewise," Kara said. "Did you discover the occupants of the house?" "Yes. Lance Bass and Eric McCoy." "Interesting." "What is?" "Who would have a grudge against the singer? And who is this Eric McCoy? I will have to do some digging on that one." "What about the purpose of the vampires? Do you know who they were working for?" "Can't be sure at the moment, although I do have some theories. Once I discover why they would want to kill a singer and who this McCoy person is, the closer we will be to finding an answer. "Batgirl, continue patrolling. Batman, are you offering your services to us?" "Of course." "Then I need you two to patrol. Perhaps you could keep an eye out on the house that the vampires attacked, Batman." "I can do that." "Good. The sooner we can discover whom these vampires work for and what their purpose is, the better off we'll be. Especially with the Christmas holiday coming up in a few days." We parted ways and I patrolled for a while. All was quiet and calm so I returned to the house. I slipped in quietly. The lights were down so I had to feel around for where I was going. I changed out of my suit and showered. When I crawled into bed, I put my arm around Lance. "Did everything go okay?" Lance asked. "Sort of. I guess the vampires were purposefully coming here. We are going to find out who they may be working for." "Are we going to be okay?" "Sure. I won't let anything happen to you." I squeezed Lance tight and we fell asleep with him in my arms. I awoke the next morning with the bed empty. After patrolling I get very exhausted, which is reasonable. Lance had gone to work. They had some finishing touches to do before the holiday season. I got up and dressed and went downstairs. I made myself some instant cappuccino and sat down to the newspaper. The front page had some instances of kidnappings. Several children were found missing early this morning with no traces as to where they went or who kidnapped them. I would have to wait until nightfall before Batman could investigate. The phone rang as I finished my lunch and it was Lance calling to see how I slept. "Pretty good. How about you?" "I felt better once you were home with me." "Awww. You are too good to me." "You are too good FOR me," he countered. "Not really. I'm just me." "And you are a wonderful you." "Awww...you are making me blush." Lance laughed. "How is practice going?" "Pretty good. We have just a few more days until we leave for Mississippi. Are you excited?" "Excited to meet your parents? Definitely!" "Good. I talked with my mom today and she is excited to meet you, too." "That's great." "Listen. I also got us some tickets to hear Celine Dion in concert before we leave. It's a Christmas concert." "That will be so great!" "Yeah. I enjoy spending time with you, Eric." "And I love spending time with you, too." I heard a noise in the background. "Sorry, got to go," Lance said. "Talk to you later." "Bye, Lance. I love you." "I love you, too." We hung up. That evening I greeted Lance with a nice quiet dinner. As we finished up, I explained to him the situation. "I have to go out on patrol tonight. I'm not sure whom those vampires worked for. And it seems the Slayer in this town has decided to be Batgirl. I offered to help, at least until we can get out of here for the holidays. I hope it doesn't bother you." "It does bother me. The thought of you going out and hunting vampires will always bother me. But this is part of who you are. I have come to accept that. I just hope you are careful and come back to me in one piece and as human, not a vampire." "I don't plan on letting anyone bite me but you," I teased. Lance smiled a little at me. "Come with me," I said as soon as I put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher and put the left over food away. I took Lance's hand and led him into the living room. I sat down and had him sit in between my legs and I held him tight. "Things will be okay. This is just to find out who is trying to kill us." "Do you think it's the Penguin hiring someone else to do it?" "I don't think he knows of vampires actually existing to hire them. This has to be the work of someone who knows the forces of darkness. That's why I'm thankful I met up with a Slayer in Orlando. She has connections to the Watchers' Council in England to get information and assistance." I looked at the clock and the time was 9:00. "I really should go now." Lance got up and followed me up to the spare bedroom. I changed into my suit. "Every time I see you in that, I have mixed emotions. I'm proud and stand in awe of who and what you are. I also have a terrible nauseating fear that you won't come back whole." "I'm sorry. I wish I could change this. But I can't. Being Batman has become part of me. It's one of the oldest rules: Do what you can to leave the world a little better than when you found it. If I can do this and save lives, stop evil, I need to do this." "I know." Lance walked up to me and embraced me tightly. I kissed him fully on the lips before I pulled on my mask. Within moments, I was downtown patrolling. About an hour later, my path crossed Batgirl's. "Find anything?" I asked. "No. Kara checked with the Council. They are not sure either of what it could be. It's up to us to investigate." "Just for the next few days. I won't be in town for a week or two." "Really?" "I'm going to follow Lance and Eric and make sure nothing happens to them. If someone is attempting to kill them, one of us should be there to stop it." "Why can't both of us go?" "Because Orlando will still have vampires and other demons to contend with. The people will need a Slayer." "I can't patrol the whole city on my own." "Don't worry. You won't be alone. You'll have Nightwing and Robin to help you." To Be Continued... Next up...The Celine Dion Concert and Lance and Eric depart for Mississippi.
