'Whispering Your Name' Music & Lyrics by Jules Shearer, Vocal Recording by Allison Moyet Chapter One (JC) Whispering Your Name 'When he said that you were through I thought there was nothing that I could do Just because he ran right here Doesn't mean I interfered Now I'm wondering if we can't feel the same Cause he keeps whispering your name He keeps on whispering your name Like he's just waiting...' It is a beautiful sunny morning in New York. The hotel coffee shop is mostly empty as JC thought it would be. It is early, too early for anyone in the group to be up. JC checks his watch and waits for his appointment. He stares at his coffee cup, hoping he can see the future in there. He looks up when he hears a thud on the booth across from him. Joey is wearing a backwards baseball cap and is unshaved. For about the one millionth time, JC wonderes what Justin seesw in him. Joey orderes coffee and then JC sends the waitress away. "You summoned me?", Joey begins sarcastically. JC narrows his eyes. "You know why we're here." "Yea, I know." Both look down at the table. JC remembered the first time he saw Joey and Justin together. At that club in Orlando, where Chris had brought them to discuss forming a singing group. He remembered the way Justin's eyes had lit up at the big Italian with the Brooklyn accent. He remembered the stab of pain he felt. He had tried to keep Joey out of the group. He did it subtly and never actually opposed him while Justin clearly pushed for Joey. Chris, seeing a way to make sure of Justin's participation, had backed Joey all the way. JC gave in gracefully. He was relieved when Joey turned out to be a huge flirt. He flirted with boys, girls, dogs, trees. He couldn't help it. He was also a goof. Very funny sometimes, even JC would admit, but he was just too...well...too goofy for Justin. Justin had a serious side that JC was confident would get tired of Joey's antics. JC had been sure that nothing would ever happen between Justin and Joey. JC had realized he was gay after leaving the MMC. He had some experiences in Nashville where he moved after the Mouse Club was cancelled but he wanted a career more than a relationship. When Justin called out of the blue to tell him that Chris wanted to meet with about forming a singing group, he was thrilled. When he saw Justin for the first time in almost two years it was an unexpected punch to the stomach. Justin was growing up into a very handsome teenager. His blond, curly hair and deep blue eyes and pretty mouth struck a very deep chord in JC. His combination of maturity beyond his years and childish delight in everything also were appealing to JC. He didn't do anything about it though. He kept his feelings to himself and concentrated on the group. Those early days had been the best. There hadn't been much money around but they had a great time together. Every day was a new adventure, their first trip to Europe, their first fans, first autographs, the travel. It all seemed to be a fantasy come true. They all hung out together and JC was with Justin constantly. That was enough for JC. He believed that in time Justin would come to him. And he did, but not in the way JC hoped. Justin first came out to JC by telling him that he was in love with Joey. JC was stunned but he still believed that Justin would get over it quickly. After all, what could he possibly see in him? JC comforted Justin and assured him that everything would be okay. He told Justin that Joey was not the most dependable guy in the world, no matter how charming he seemed. JC didn't confess that he was gay as well. He told himself that he wanted Justin to feel comfortable talking to him. It had been a big mistake he now knew. As the two grew even closer, with Justin confiding in him all his fears about his family and friends, JC didn't reciprocate. He kept waiting for the right moment and it never seemed to come. Then the unthinkable had actually happened. They were in South Africa. They had been booked into Capetown and were staying in a beautiful beachfront hotel. Joey and Justin missed breakfast. Then they missed lunch. For Joey to miss two meals, something big had to be going on. JC saw them from his balcony. Two figures in white, leaning against a palm tree, kissing. As they headed back to the hotel hand-in-hand, JC saw clearly it was Joey and Justin. He turned and ran for the bathroom. He retched until he his throat was sore and then laid down on the cool bathroom tiles. He never wanted to get up. Nothing had been the same after that. Justin burst into his room the next day and gave all the details to JC excitedly. JC tried to be supportive but excused himself by saying he had eaten something bad. Joey and Justin told Lance and Chris and both took it in stride. All agreed that the band came first and it needed to be kept quiet for the sake of their careers. JC watched from the sidelines and bottled up his feelings. He watched as within a year Joey began fooling around on the side with both men and women, but Justin always forgave him and took him back. JC's anger at their relationship led him to act out in some stupid ways. He cruised the Internet looking for anonymous sex places in the towns they visited. He sucked off dozens of tricks in dozens of cities. He let strange men fuck him in dirty restrooms. If he couldn't have Justin, then it didn't matter what he did. Eventually Justin discovered some of what was going on when he accidentally caught JC on his knees giving a club bouncer a blow job after a gig. JC remembered the hurt look on Justin's face as he deliberately turned away to finish off the guy. When Justin tried to talk to him about being gay, JC shut him out. In time all the guys got at least a vague idea of what JC's lifestyle was becoming and all worried about him but no one really understood what was driving him. No one except Joey. The merry-go-round went on for a few years. Their success became greater and greater. America fell to the boys charm and upbeat dance-pop. Flush with money and fame, the great salves of celebrities' pain, they partied at clubs and dreamed of even greater things. The need to stick together was greater than the tensions pulling at their insides. Who knows how long it might have gone on if it hadn't been for one night. JC was awakened by someone pounding on the window of his bedroom. Outside in the rain, he saw Justin. He was drenched and the expression on his face was frightening. JC let him in and Justin collapsed into his arms crying like a baby. All JC could do was to hold the young man in his arms and try to soothe him. As Justin calmed down, JC tried to get find out what had happened but Justin refused to talk. Then JC finally noticed that some of the dampness on Justin's body was blood. Whatever darkness had brought him here, JC knew he had to keep him safe. He called Johnny and got a discreet doctor to make a housecall. The doctor recommended hospitalizing Justin but Johnny was afraid of the publicity. Teen pop idols do not make suicide attempts, at least not at the height of their careers. Instead, Justin was left at JC's house and the doctor would make daily visits. Even Justin's family was to be left in the dark. Johnny took care of disposing of the wrecked truck. JC called Chris and Lance and informed them of the situation. All three assumed it had something to do with Joey but no one knew the specifics. Finally, Chris managed to get a hold of Joey and found out the truth. Joey had gotten a girl pregnant. Not just any girl either, but his 'good friend' Kelly. Everyone knew Joey had sworn up and down to Justin that he and Kelly were just friends despite Justin's suspicions. Moreover, Kelly had decided to keep the baby and Joey was going to support her decision. He had confessed to Justin and Justin had run away. Joey asked to see Justin but JC refused. Justin was virtually catatonic on the couch where he watched TV all day and night, never saying a word. Joey went to JC's house and stormed and threatened but JC held his ground. Every night Justin slept in JC's bed and JC held him. Whatever his dreams or nightmares, Justin refused to talk about the fact that he usually woke up calling for Joey. JC ignored his own pain to help his young friend. He did whatever he could to bring back the old Justin. He played old MMC videos of the days before NSYNC. He got Justin to shop for shoes. He did stupid impressions and played games and stood on his head and gradually, Justin's depression began to lift. There was a new album to record and a tour to plan. Their careers couldn't be stopped just because of a personal crisis. It was arranged that Joey not be in the studio at the same time as JC or Justin. Joey's baby had been born and little Brianna Fatone instantly became the apple of her daddy's eye. Justin refused to see the baby or Joey. He assured JC that that part of his life was over. One night after a late recording session, JC came home to find the place lit with candles. He followed a series of notes to the bedroom and found Justin naked on the bed. He had fallen asleep on his stomach while wating and his perfect ass was framed by the royal blue satin sheets. JC shook him gently and Justin awoke with a lazy smile. He reached up and kissed JC. He told him he wanted to start a new life and he knew that JC wanted him too. Despite JC's misgivings, he gave in to the sweetness of Justin's lips. They made love that night. When JC felt himself cum inside Justin, he burst into tears at the happiness of the moment. It seemed that everything would work out. Then in the morning, as JC stroked Justin's golden hair, he heard Justin whisper for Joey. JC decided to pretend it never happened and didn't tell Justin about it when he awoke. Tour rehearsals were the beginning of the end. Justin, though a pro, had always been a terror during rehearsals. Filled with self-doubt and expecting the worst, he got tense and irritable and the only one who could calm him was Joey. Joey had a trick of coming up behind Justin and wrapping him in his arms and whispering to him. You could visibly see Justin tense and then watch it wash out of his body until he was relaxed and ready to move on. After a couple of days, it was clear JC wasn't capable of doing the same thing. His own perfectionism drove Justin further into self-doubt and chronic sniping. Joey stood silently as Justin's rages and mood swings escalated. Johnny pressured JC to get Justin under control and JC's own feelings of inadequacy started to get the better of him. He clearly couldn't help Justin the way Joey had been able to. The knowledge that Joey was there and seeing his failure made him even angrier. His anger began to turn on Justin as he shouted at him to snap out of it. Everyone was feeling the tension when the stage malfunctioned and Joey's leg was trapped. A bolt shot through it and cut him to the bone. Justin ran to Joey's side and held him in his arms until an ambulance arrived. JC watched Justin climb into the ambulance with Joey and ride with him to the hospital. JC followed the ambulance to the hospital, feeling inside it was a mistake. He watched as Justin was turned away at the emergency room door while Joey was wheeled inside. He watched as Joey's parents and Kelly and the baby arrived at the hospital. He watched as they pushed Justin away. As Justin left the emergency room, JC caught up to him. They had their worst fight. Justin looked crushed but JC couldn't help tearing into him and telling him that Joey was gone forever and he better accept it and shape up. It was only the first in a continuing series. JC knew he was pushing Justin away but he didn't know how to stop. When Joey had returned and the tour began in earnest, JC performed professionally and gave the audience his best. Still, anyone could see that the loose camaraderie of the bands' early days was gone. A stiffness and discomfort pervaded everything they did. In bed together, although the lovemaking had stopped, JC listened as Justin whispered for Joey in his dreams. To be Continued.. Well, there is Chapter One. Tell me what you thought of it.
