She walked over a patch of grass without disturbing a single blade grass. The trees gave her respect and the animals sang as she approached her. She could bend the land to her will she commanded the seas and air. In this realm she had no equal even Angel would think twice before tempting her wrath. She was responsible for the well being of the Earth and all of her children. Only the Father God and Mother God and the Earth herself could command her. Gaia the spirit of the Earth made her way to only place on the Island that could heal her champion entering the island's only mountain it side parted for her she made her way into the heart of it. She could feel the heat from the lava pool which gave the cave a red hue. But it was the suspended crystal high above the lava pit that gave her pause the crystal held Earth Champion his crystal blue skin marked up with cuts and bruises. The Globe in his chest was nearly dark expect for a really small spark that told her that he was barely alive. "I am sorry Captain Planet I should have acted sooner," the woman cried. If seeing Captain Planet like this wasn't bad enough she was still dealing with the lost of her Planeteers. Without the rings Gaia couldn't return him to Earth and the Crystal Matrix to heal him, and to re-energize him there was only one other way she would have to combine Captain Planet with a human being. Not just any human but the Nexus. I got up the next day and made my way to the bathroom to get a shower. I growled a little while I liked this motel I was greatly looking to the day for when I can do this in my own home but that was still days away. After cleaning myself I got dressed and went out for breakfast when I returned to my motel room I sat in front of my computer. I began to look for a Job outside of the Reserves one place came up and it intrigued me. `Wanted Body Guard' I need a bodyguard looking for someone who is quick on his or her feet. Any experience accepted. Mr. Dave Matthews, of the Delaware Valley Geothermal Power Plant, I did a quick check on how to get there and headed out the door. Pulling up to the plant it I was intrigued by the architecture and how it looked as if the land around it was completely undisturbed there was large forest the surrounded the southern quadrant and open meadow to the west I could hear the stream that fed the Geo-plant with the water it needed to produce power. Looking to the plant itself I saw the two towers with steam gently billowing out of them. Like two white clouds the clean water vapors rose to the sky. Walking up to the main gate the guard grumbled, "Can I help you?" "Yes I am answering an ad from Mr. Matthews," I told him "Huh," The guard huffed Then picked up the phone "Yes there someone here to talk Mr. Matthews he says that there is an ad," The Guard grumbled into the phone. I could hear the irritation in his voice I probably interrupted his naptime. I laughed to myself as I heard him say, "Yes I will send him in," "Just go through those doors and go to the front desk they will help you," He told me "Thank you," I said politely He just huffed and sat back down I moved to the door and came to the front desk. "Hi can I help you?" The rather plump woman asked "Yes I am answering the ad that Mr. Matthews put out," I told her "Ah yes let me call him down," She said cheerfully She picked up the phone "Dave there is someone here to see you," "Ok I will let him know," She cheered "Mr. Matthews will be right down, he like to do thing personally," She told me I just shook my head and she went on, "He's been looking for a new bodyguard ever since his last one got arrested," She told me "By the way my name is Susie," She said cheerfully "My name is Mike," I introduced We heard the door open and out came a Caucasian man with piercing gray eyes and salt and pepper color hair. He also had a scar that started at his hairline down to his left eye. And another on his right cheek that ran from his eye to his chin. He wore a black suit with a black and white striped tie he looked pretty well built for a man of his age he moved with some who knew martial arts I doubt even I could hear him come up behind me with the way he barely made a noise as he walked up to Susie and I. "Hello I am Dave Matthews," He friendly introduced himself by holding out his hand "Mike Pennock," I replied by taking the offered hand. "A pleasure to meet you," He shook my hand I felt a small sensation in the back of my mind that reminded me like a ping on a radar screen. "So you want to be my bodyguard?" He asked "Well I read your ad it looks like I am what you are looking for," I smiled "How so?" He asked the glimmer never leaving his eyes "Well I've served in the US Navy since high school and I am trained for this type of work," I told him "Hum lets go to my office and talk some more," Dave suggested "Ok," I replied following him into the elevator "Mike I will be honest I am looking for more then a bodyguard," He told me "Really?" I inquired "Yes," Matthews replied "I am also looking for an assistance," He told me I once again felt a ping in the back of my mind `what was going on' I thought "I think I found both," He told me "How so?" I asked "I know how to read people," Dave told me "And I can see that you are just what I am looking for," He told me "What?" I asked wide-eyed "In fact I know you are what I am looking for so you are hired," Dave said and shook my hand. I just stood there dumbfounded and found myself driving back to my motel room and when I reached it I opened the door and sat on the sofa it took me a moment to ask, "What just happened?" I needed to get out, and clear my head so I could figure these things out. I found myself walking into a nearby park when I heard a noise coming from inside. I felt yet another ping and without thinking I followed where the ping was sending me. Following the sound I came upon a very bizarre site it looked like the Phantom of the Opera was fighting a gang. I mean he was the Phantom of the Opera he wore a long black cape. Under the cape was what looked like a tuxedo he even had a bow tie a white mask covered his face. He carried a large walking stick which appeared to double as a weapon. And he was most definitely fighting a gang and in the corner was a woman and her child cowering out of the way. My body was moving faster then my mind I went into action when my mind finally caught up with the rest of me. It quickly pulled up my military training and instincts took over as I ran to help the masked man. When I was close enough I found myself leaping into the air taking a guy from behind, and pushing him to the ground when he landed face first into the pavement effectively taking him out of the fight I flipped off of him. My target was a man holding a knife, who was running at the masked man trying to get him from behind my feet made connection with his chest and he went down with a soft grunt. Using the same momentum and flipped back and gracefully landed in a crouched position on the ground looking for me next target. Surveying the battlefield I was shocked to see a quarterstaff laying next to me a quick look up at the Phantom he just smiled I felt another ping this time causing me to duck grabbing the quarterstaff as I went avoiding a punch from the guy standing over me. `Thank the Mother' I thought as I rolled out of the way and still in a crouching position with the staff in both hands. The guy came at me and with the quarterstaff between us I fell backwards striking out with my feet catching the guy in the stomach. Using the law of motion to my advantage I used his own momentum against him I sent him flying into the air he landed in trashcan effectively taking him out of the fight. Finally getting back on my feet I was hit with another ping, I brought the quarterstaff up just in time for it to intercept a fist flying at me. The punk's hand hit the quarterstaff making him cry in pain as his arm jerked back. "You mother fucker," he cursed I didn't bother responding it was a waste of energy talking instead I planted the quarterstaff in-between two slabs of sidewalk concrete joined and using it to propel me at the injured gangster. My right foot took care of the rest when it made contact with his chin spinning him in a 180 degree and making him drop like a stone to the ground. I had just turned to see the Phantom strike at his target with his own staff, swinging it around catching the next gang member in the shin, making him cry in pain. Then he finished his swing when he caught the guy behind him in his the solar plexus taking both out in one stroke. The next guy we tag teamed when the Phantom pushed the bandit over me just as I rolled under him knocking his feet out from under him. Then we went our separate ways I first felt another ping just then I saw stars when a fist hit my jaw knocking me to the ground. When my foe followed through I caught his fist squeezing it causing him shriek then momentum I spun him around moving his arm behind his back. Using my foot to do the rest I sent him into a tree the air got knocked out of him leaving him very dazed "This fight is over," I told him as he tried to get up. An upper cut to his chin sending flying backwards into a park bench which finally gave him all the excuse to stay down. Standing over the neutralized gang my blood still sang as I felt a strange sensation course throughout my entire body. I am not just talking about the adrenalin rush but the sense of purpose one that I had felt since I put my signature on the dotted line and joining the Navy. For the first time I knew why I had come home a breeze rustled the leaves of the trees and I felt the Mother I felt her praise. "Thanks," The Phantom said coming by my side shaking my hand "By the Mother's Hand," was my only response. I got back to my pristine motel room hours later I was beginning to hate more with each passing day. Several thoughts crossed my mind and all I could think of "The Fates really have bad timing," but when my body hit the bed I was out like a light. I awoke the next morning very confused and confident all at the same time I thought to what had transpired last night it still trying to comprehend what the Hell happened. Multiple thoughts ran through my mind beginning with the pings and the feeling I got when that breeze brush past me. While I was relieved when they hit me when I needed them it still left me with this nagging feeling. "Like why would the world care enough to send them to me in the first time," I said out loud going into the bathroom and I grabbed a quick shower then a change for work, followed by breakfast at a nearby restaurant after leaving a tip for the waitress I made my way to work. Pulling up to the main gate of the Geo Plant I showed my ID to the guard who let me in I made my way Dave's office for my first day on the job I was still little queasy I had no idea what to expect. "Good morning Mike," Dave greeted "Morning Sir," I replied my voice a little strained as I tried to gauge his persona better "Pfft forget that whole sir thing," Dave laughed waving his hand in a dismissive move. "Ok Mr. Matthews," I replied uncertain on what to say. "Ok you have much to learn," Dave laughed "You are not in the Navy anymore you don't need to be so formal," Dave said trying to make a point. "That not entirely true," I stated as a matter of fact "What do you mean?" He asked his eyebrow went up a couple of notches "Well I may not be in active duty anymore my former commanding officer got me a post in the Naval Reserves at Willow Groves," I told him "Ok, well then that make have you here more special," Dave said "How so?" I asked with my own raised eyebrow "It is just is go with it," Dave laughed This guy isn't your average boss I thought to myself. "Oh, you don't have to go back to your motel tonight your home is finished," Dave stated plainly This took me back how did he know I was living out of a motel? "How?" I finally asked "I like to be informed, about everyone who works for me Mike," Dave smiled "What did you do have some one follow me?" I queried "No but you're not the only one good with computers or with friends in high places," Dave smirked "But that still doesn't explain," I started to say but Dave cut me off "I have people in the construction company you hired to redo your home and they informed me on what was going on," Dave told me "Wow," I exclaimed "So your home is now finished and you don't have to worry about bank payments either I made them for you," Dave smiled then he threw something at me on instinct I put my hand up and caught the object looking down it was a set of keys. "You will need those to get in," Dave smiled "I don't know what to say?" I was stupefied I don't know why this guy would stick his neck out for someone he just hired. "There is nothing to say I like to look after all of my employees," Dave reaffirmed This guy really wasn't like any boss I have ever encountered. Dave's demeanor changed now he had a very serious look on his face. "Hey Mike can you lock that door I need to talk to you in private?" Dave asked `Oh shit I did something wrong,' I thought to myself then I felt that ping again this time letting me know that everything was ok. "Mike you did well last night," Dave said seriously "What are you talking about?" I inquired with an understandable confusion "In the park last night," Dave reported It all came back to me the park, the gang, the fighting, the pings, and the strange masked man. Dave must have somehow seen me in the park last night, "You saw the fight?" I asked Laughing a little, "You could say that," Then he took that more serious look again then said, "I was in the fight actually," I saw the fight in my mind's eye in particular the Phantom the scar on Dave's face were identical to the ones the masked man had. "You were the Phantom?" I asked "You even got the name right," Dave smiled again "For the last twenty years I was known as the Phantom," Dave said I just sat there listening to his tale "I was both feared and respected," He stated "I fought along some very interesting heroes and against some really nasty villains," Dave told me his tale. When he was done he took on that serious tone again "Mike until last night I wasn't sure," Dave said "About, what sir?" I asked "Mike I am not getting any younger," Dave stated then he said, "I am not only looking for a bodyguard I am looking for my replacement," I was stunned "By the Mother's Hand," I felt that ping again I almost ran for the door. "Why me?" I asked my heart was going mile a minute. "I wasn't sure until I saw you in action last night you are a natural," Dave confessed "Your fighting style was amazing and your instinct were well honed," He told me I smiled a little knowing there was more I still haven't figured out why the Earth has taken an interest in me but I knew I had a deep connection. "What I am asking you Mike is will you take over for me?" He asked me with a heartfelt plead I asked, "Why," "Mike as I said I am not getting any younger in fact last night fight I thought I was done for it that gang outnumbered me and I thought I was going to lose it if you hadn't shown up I would have," Dave replied "I can't do it anymore but I can't leave this city unprotected," Dave stated I knew in my heart that this was the moment I was looking for and that everything about it felt right but which seemed to be confirmed with the ping from the Earth. "Ok Dave I will help I not sure if I am going crazy but by the Mother's Hand I will help," I replied I could see the weight lifted off his shoulders and the smile on his face returned. "Thanks Mike," He got up and patted me on the back Then he asked, "By the way are you Wiccan?" "Why do you ask?" I inquired "You keep referring to the Mother," Dave pointed out I laughed I could see how he could think that. "No while I respect all faith I am not Wiccan," I told him "Then?" Dave queried "I was referring to the Earth," I told him "The Earth?" he asked "Yeah you know the world we call home," I responded sarcastically "Yeah I know that but why do you call it that?" He asked "Because that is who she is," I told him "God made us all but it is the Earth that must feed us," I told him "In every sense she is the Mother of mankind, and she is the Mother of all life on this world," I told him Dave just sat there and smiled, "That was wonderful not many people talk like that these days," "Thanks," I responded "There is something I must ask," Dave queried "What about it?" I asked back "Last night there were several time where you were able to dodge punches without even facing your opponents how were you able to do it?" Dave pointed out "I am still trying to figure this part out Dave," I replied scratching my head "But in short I've be getting what I'm calling pings from the Earth," I told him "Really so you're a mutant?" Dave replied it was more of interest remark and not a disgusted one which told me everything I need to know about his if he was a bigot in any way I would have got up and left that moment. "No I don't think so but I do believe that the Mother has taken a special interest in me," I told him "How so?" Dave asked "I don't know just call it a feeling," I told him "Ok after work we'll get to started," Dave spoke Please tell me what you think at3unit3@yahoo.com I also recommend the following stories it was because of them I got into writing in the first place.
