The Borg By Bucky-18 kael116@yahoo.com Chapter 1 - The Attack My name is lieutenant Jon Seager. I specialize in engineering and quantum computing. I served as chief of computer operations on the Federation Starship U.S.S. Mendoza, a galaxy class starship. Now, the story I'm about to tell is how we all - everyone on the ship - encountered the Borg. It was a Monday. My shift started at 0300 hours.an ungodly hour that I had no idea existed before I joined Starfleet. I woke up and slowly rolled out of bed, forcing myself awake. This particular day, it was a slow start. Even finding my uniform was a pain in the ass, not to mention showering and shaving. After an hour of prep, I was ready. I arrived in the forward computer monitoring station several minutes early and performed my daily ships functions of checking on the status of the computer core and its sub systems. There was a glitch in the warp field generator, which caused the computer core to be out of sync with the data input - a very nasty problem that manifested itself by corrupting all the files added in the current cycle. That was the first strange thing that happened that day, and definitely not the last. I believe the Mendoza was examining a quasar in the outer part of the neutral zone, but I didn't really care where the ship was - the computers were my only interest. At 0600 hours, I was on duty monitoring the computer glitch when the warp field surrounding the computer suddenly collapsed. Something was interfering with the Cochran warp generator. Seconds later, the ship jerked violently. I was thrown across the core chamber, almost falling into the depths beyond the catwalk (falling from a 5 story catwalk into a warp field would have ripped me limb from limb), but luckily, I grabbed the arm rail. Alarms sounded and the red alert lights flashed. What is it now? Another piece of protomatter that was ejected from a star just flashed on sensors? I thought. Then, just as I climbed back up onto the catwalk and into the corridor, the ship stopped shaking. It seemed still. The hum of the warp core was gone and the ship was completely motionless. My communicator was dead. There was no one in the corridors. What's going ON? Where is everybody? Why aren't the comm.systems working? I walked towards the nearest turbolift and got on. "Engineering!" I yelled to the computer. The doors shut and it started to race me to deck 16. Then, just as the turbolift was slowing to a halt, the lights went out and all systems went dead. I groped around for a few moments in the dark before I found the door override lever. I pulled as hard as I could and the turbolift doors whooshed open. There were mechanical sounds outside and strange red lights the size of dots floating around the room. They were probably the indicators on the emergency backup lights, but then they started to flash green and blue. Heavy footsteps rushed everywhere in the room. I stood up and could see the lights coming right at me. What ARE those? I thought. "Shit!" I yelled as I made the connection. The lights surrounded me. I tried to run back into the turbo lift, but instead I ran right into a warm body. It was plated with metal and was sharp. Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! I thought as the drone hit me over the head. Soon, I was unconscious and lying on the deck. Everything went fuzzy.I don't want this..were the last thoughts that came into my head.
