Weaver X Chapter Two If there was one thing that Alex learnt on the streets, it was that if you only have one thing to make money with, then you'd better use it, whether you liked it or not. It was either that or starve, so Alex had used it. "You better watch yourself honey, your regulars are going to start looking around soon." Jack's voice intruded on Alex's thoughts, it was this streetwise and roughly compassionate man who'd given Alex his first lessons on how to survive. 'Sell it cheap, stay clean and never tell your john anything they don't want to hear, they mostly just want a quickie and then they're off, but, if they start calling you son, then you call out 'daddy' fast.' "I've only been here a year Jack." Alex protested, shivering slightly in the chill autumn air and hitching his coat tighter around him. "That's too long." Jack's husky voice was coated in sympathy. "You should leave town for a bit, make 'em miss you, then come back or you'll be out of money real quick." Alex shook his head. "And go where?" "Head over to the States or something, you never spend anything, so you should have enough to get there." Jack paused as a car passed them slowly, posing slightly for the driver and swearing as it passed them by. Alex grimaced at the car. "I don't have nearly enough for that, cross-country, maybe, but international?" He finished sceptically, Jack ought to know better. "You didn't take your john up on his sugar daddy offer then?" Jack frowned, referring to an offer Alex had been made a few weeks back. "I don't like being controlled, that one would have me rolled up, tied down and worse if I took him up on the offer." Alex said bitterly. "No freedom kills." Jack sighed theatrically. "I suppose I could do you a favour." He grinned. "I've got an old trick who owes me a favour or two." Alex raised an eyebrow in surprise, Jack rarely did anyone favours. "What sort of favours?" Jack smiled toothily. "The sort of favours that can get a man in a lot of trouble if the right words were whispered into the wrong ears. Leave it to me, and we'll get your ass out of here." Alex looked at him sceptically for a long moment, then posed slouchingly for the next car. *** Alex hugged Jack one last time. "I still don't know why you're doing this for me." Kicking his old back pack, he glanced over at the waiting cargo ship. "Call me sentimental." Jack frowned. "You deserve better than this life kiddo, so do me a favour and don't let me see your ass around here again, go make something of yourself." Jack's old trick, Saul Hemsworth, turned out to be the first mate on a cargo ship with more than a few customs violations to his name, Jack had helped him out by hiding some of his more risky ventures, just what exactly, Jack hadn't said. Alex grabbed his bag and slung it over one shoulder. "Thanks." "Just get out of here." Alex heard Jack's voice cry as he climbed the gangplank. Quickly, Alex was met by Saul. "You two should learn the meaning of keeping a low profile." He said in a low, intense voice. "You're not exactly a legal immigrant." Alex nodded apologetically and followed Saul into the depths of the hold. "Where am I staying?" Saul grunted unintelligibly and led him into the cargo hold, tightly packed with shipping containers and onto the far end. "In here." He gestured to a container. Alex hauled open the unsealed door and found a canvas cot, lit by an old fashioned gas lantern set on the floor. "Thanks." He walked into the container and set his bag on the cot. "Keep the lamp off during the day. "I'll come and give you food after dark, otherwise, you just keep quiet or I'll pitch you over the side myself." Saul didn't even wait for his nod of acceptance before slipping off into the deep gloom of the hold. Alex waited a moment, and drew the door closed. It appeared that he was to be kept a secret, even from the rest of the crew for the six weeks it would take to get to America. Sighing Alex sat on the canvas cot and flicked the gas lantern off, darkness descended like a curtain suddenly falling, unpierced by even the slightest flicker of light. *** In the year and a half that Alex had left his life and home, his mutant ability had developed in leaps and bounds, becoming more and more difficult to ignore or control, until, finally he'd been chased out of the squatter's house he was staying in when his control slipped and caused the walls to catch fire, less than a month after running away. It was this that had driven Alex underground, into the network of tunnels, rooms and electrical junctions that formed the sewers. It had also driven him to learn something about his ability and how to control it. Never unintelligent, it had nevertheless taken Alex months of trial and experimentation to learn how to gain rudimentary control of his ability. Through trial and error, he learnt that his power could affect the ancient elements, Earth, Air, Fire, Water and more. He'd learnt that he could somehow weave the four together in different ways, creating different, sometimes totally surprising, effects. Fire woven with a touch of Earth created a pocket of warmth against the cold, Air and Water, woven together with Fire created a sort of invisibility, Air and Fire, a way to sort of soundproof anything he wanted, and how to create a light in darkness.
