Weaver X Chapter Five Alex woke to dimness and sharp pain. A groan escaped his lips before he could stifle it. "Alex!" Dimitri's urgent, low voice stabbed into his head. A cool touch was followed by a sharp pricking pain. "I've injected you with a pain killer, it should take effect soon." "What happened?" Alex forced his eyes open, the effort made Alex see stars. "They claim to be from the government, tracking down mutant agitators." Dimitri's voice sharpened with anger. "It looks more like a witch hunt to me." "Dimitri." Alex moved his head experimentally. "We're in my surgery." He explained, having no idea that Alex had ever seen the inside of it before. "They locked us in here and are taking my patients prisoner." "I know one of them." Alex struggled into an upright position. "He was one of the cops that came round the house when that noise happened." Alex referred cautiously to the incident, and felt his head gingerly. "I didn't think they found anything." "It's alright Alex, I thought I was being followed for a while now, this has nothing to do with you." Dimitri dismissed Alex's guilt out of hand. Alex felt grim. He hadn't mentioned his own feeling of being followed, if he had. "Help me stand up." He ordered. Dimitri squinted at him in the dim light. "What are you planning on doing?" He demanded. "That pain killer hasn't had nearly enough time to work." "I'm going to get us out of this, all of us." Alex said grimly, wincing as he stood. "I'm not going to let you die in some fool heroics." Dimitri whispered furiously, grabbing Alex's arm. Alex shook his arm free and instinct flashed through him. Seizing his ability, he wove something entirely new. For a split second a shimmering curtain hung in the air before it snapped together and somehow rotated. Standing in the middle of the room was a scene that Alex knew well. Dimitri stared, shocked. "What.what is that?" He stammered, his grip on Alex's arm loosening as the night sounds of the Australian outback filtered into the examination room. "It's my home, you'll be safe there." Alex replied tersely. He'd had no idea what he was doing, but he needed a way to keep Dimitri safe while he rescued the mutants and seemingly discovered a way to travel vast distances without actually having to cross the intervening space. Cautiously he stepped through and landed heavily, there was a slight drop on the Australian side of the doorway. Weaving once more, he lifted Dimitri with flows of pure air and deposited him on Australian soil. "You're a mutant." Dimitri accused. "Why didn't you tell me?" "Can we go over this later?" Alex asked wearily. "Just stay here, and I'll come and get you as soon as I can, right now, I've got things to do." He stepped back through the gateway into Dimitri's basement on the other side of the world. "If I get into serious trouble, just walk towards that." Alex gestured at Ayers Rock, looming in the background. "There are tourist busses there everyday, as well as water." Dimitri nodded. "Don't take too long." Alex flashed him a quick grin and released the weave holding the gateway open and watched it snap shut. "Right." He muttered to himself as he readied several nasty weaves. "So much for my secret." And blew the door open with an explosive weave of air. *** In the end, it took about 5 minutes to subdue the 10 man compliment that had invaded the practise. Alex simply blew the door open, and in the ensuing confusion, wove bands of air stronger than steel around the soldiers, binding their arms to their sides, and another weave of air to take their weapons from their hands. Alex glared at the soldiers and wove wards around the sewer entrance and the stairs up into the house, anyone trying to enter the waiting room or the examination room now had to tunnel through the ground to get to them. Satisfied with those precautions, Alex bent down to examine the prisoners. All of them were sleeping, obviously drugged for transportation to somewhere. Weaving the diagnostic weave Alex examined one of the prisoners. He had a cold, but, Alex had no idea how to bring him around from the drug. With a sigh, Alex cleared a space and wove a gateway. As it snapped into being, he noticed the edges seemed to be sharper than a razor, as the edge of the opening gate scythed through a metal chair with no difficulties. "Dimitri!" Alex called softly. "Alex, that didn't take long." Dimitri's voice came closer as he stepped into view. "I need your help, they've all been given some kind of drug, I don't know how to help them." Alex called urgently. Dimitri raced over and stepped through the gateway, and quickly bent over to examine the first prisoner he got to. After a moment he straightened up. "As far as I can tell, they've be given anaesthetic, but what type and what effect that will have on them? I don't know. I need some help with this." He shook with helpless frustration. Alex let the gateway close. "I don't know how to help them with my ability.I'm coming up with a blank." He glanced at the soldiers. "And we need to consider what to do with them." Dimitri looked darkly at the soldiers. "If it weren't for my oath, I'd kill them all myself." He muttered. "I need a telephone." "And we need to get out of here." Alex felt the urgent tingling of wards in the tunnel to the sewers tingling. "Now." He wove another gateway urgently and grabbed everyone in flows of air as it snapped open and threw them gently through as he unravelled the wards to the entrances, stepped through the gate and closed the gateway behind him. "Golden Gate park? This is where you send us?" Dimitri asked incredulously, scanning the area for people running and screaming. "I don't think anyone saw us." Alex replied. "Besides, I made us all invisible the moment I stepped through the gate, anyone who saw it will just think they were seeing things for a moment." Alex glanced at the still bound soldiers, making sure they were all there. "You need to use a phone, there are more than a few here, go, make your call, I'll wait here for you." Alex threw Dimitri his wallet. Dimitri grabbed the wallet. "How can I make calls when I'm invisible? And how will I find you afterwards?" Alex sighed. "I made the area invisible, sort of, it's not an individual thing, you're fine to go and make a call. And as for finding us again, just walk back here and I'll guide you back through, ok?" Dimitri looked suspiciously at him. "Alright, just don't go anywhere, I'm calling for help, for all of us." Alex nodded wearily, the dull throbbing of his head warning him that the painkillers were beginning to wear off, they'd never had much effect on him. "Just go Dimitri. I'm not going anywhere." Dimitri nodded and set off at a trot, heading for a payphone somewhere. Alex sighed again, holding the weaves wasn't making him feel any better, without thinking, he tied off the invisibility weave. Alex froze as he realised what he'd just done. Quickly he walked across the boundary of the weave and looked back, everything was still invisible.tying off the weave seemed to maintain it without need for his continued effort. Smiling grimly, Alex re-entered the warded area and tied off the weave holding the soldiers and Parkman and relaxed as much as he could. Alex woke to the sound of Dimitri calling his name, he must have slept for some time, afternoon had turned to night. Sitting up he realised Dimitri was accompanied by two other people. Not knowing whether they were friends or not, Alex seized his ability and wove the disabling bands of air around them both before stepping out and crossing the grass rapidly to Dimitri's side. "Ah, there you are, this is." Dimitri trailed off as he realised his companions were frozen mid step. "Alex, this is our help." Alex swiftly unravelled the bonds of air. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to." Alex sputtered. "Better safe than dead kid." One of them said, stretching slightly. "This is Wolverine and Beast, they've come to help us." Dimitri introduced them. "It turns out that they were here looking for a mutant they detected coming here from the other side of the world a few weeks ago." Dimitri said meaningfully to him. "It is indeed a pleasure to meet you at last, you gave us some difficulty in locating you." The one named Beast stepped out of the shadows. "I'm sorry." Alex replied, somewhat confused. "It's quite alright, Dimitri tells us that you need some assistance?"
