An American in Canada-Chapter 1 When you're meant to be with someone, you just know it. One look into there eyes or maybe just a simple touch can tell you you've found the person you are meant to spend the rest of your life with. The way they look at you tells you that everything is going to be okay. The way they touch says they'll be with you every step of the way. Yes I like to dream, so what? Okay.so maybe it's not that simple to know these things. September 2008 Yay! First day of University. I woke up that morning a bundle of excitement and nerves. A spark would probably set me off into the sky. Despite what you might already think of me, I can tell you you're wrong. I'm just your regular guy, about 5'8, black hair, brown eyes and evenly lightly tanned skin. My dad is Dutch and my mom is a Filipina. I don't think much of my looks, regardless, I like to dress well. I feel that when I'm dressed good, I feel good. Anyways so I got up that morning did my usual routine I used for high school. Shower, shave, brush teeth, eat breakfast, brush teeth again, get dressed and finally a gurgle of Listerine. Yes I'm a freak when it comes to dental hygiene. My parents own a dental office where my whole family works. My dad is a dentist, my mom is a cosmetic dentist and my sister who just graduated is a dental hygienist. I bet you'll be able to guess what I plan on going into. Yep, that's right, medicine. Ha ha ha, you probably guessed dentistry. I finished dressing and gave myself a spritz of my Prada cologne and headed out. It was still nice out, the Winnipeg air smelled clean and fresh. I'd lived here my whole life so I learned to appreciate the nice whether before it quickly turned into the -40 Celsius whether Winnipeg is infamous for. I got in my Jetta and headed for orientation. It took me about fifteen minutes to drive down Bishop Grandin to the University of Manitoba. The university roads were busy with cars. Many had license plates from different provinces. Why anyone would torture themselves with the upcoming Winnipeg cold was beyond me, moreover, why I decided to stay here for school still has me mystified. It took me about another thirteen minutes to get to Q lot, my assigned parking lot, because of the traffic us freshies were causing. I knew the university well enough already that I didn't need any help from the greeters to find my way to my homeroom. It looked like a huge party when I got further into the campus. Frosh week was a big thing here. They already had beer gardens set up, loud music playing, and free stuff everywhere. There was even a Christians on Campus booth where they were giving out free bibles! I made my way to my homeroom in Tier building and took a seat. Other students started to flow in as did our orienteers. At nine they started their spiel about how great university is and how many great opportunities it had to offer. One of our orienteers was really bubbly and annoying so I just tune everything out. "She's pretty bubbly isn't she?" an incredibly soothing and alluring voice whispered to me, breaking me from my thoughts. I turned towards the source and found myself looking at one of the most gorgeous guys I've ever seen. He had cropped black hair, lightly tanned skin and the most amazing grey eyes I had ever seen. I was honestly momentarily speechless. I stared at him a few seconds too long before I found my voice again. I smiled. "Yeah she is, kinda annoying actually. My name's Oliver by the way, Oliver De Koning." I said nervously, reaching out my hand. "Colby Andrews." he said grabbing my hand. I'd like to say he held it longer than usual but my mind was probably just fabricating it. He smiled at me as he let go and I think I actually swooned. Yes I said swoon cuz there no other words to describe it. Besides what you think, I am not limp wristed or talk with a lisp, I'm just old fashioned when it comes to love and attraction. We were still holding each others gaze when everyone else started to get up to tour the campus. We walked around with the group for a bit and chatted. "So where you from?" I asked. "I came from Minneapolis. I've always loved Canada so that's why I came up here for school. I've always thought Canadians to be friendly and easy going and it seems to hold true so far." he said turning to me and smiling. I think I blushed. "Well I hope it holds true for the rest of time you're here." "Me too. I think I'm gonna move here when I'm done my undergraduate and do my graduate studies here." "What are you taking?" "Right now I'm thinking of a Bachelors in Science, and then maybe med school. If not, maybe dentistry." "Those sound like great plans. I myself am thinking a B.Sci. and med school. Dentistry is a great field too. Both my parents are dentists." "Oh wow that's so cool. Maybe we can be study buddies." "That'd be great!" We walked a little bit more in silence. Nothing uncomfortable. I barely knew this guy yet I felt comfortable enough to share a silence with him. I took this time to look over my new friend. He was quite fit. I could tell by the way his clothes fit him perfectly. Impeccable style. He stood about 6' tall. Geez I could really fall for this straight guy if I'm not careful. "You wanna ditch this group and get something to eat?" he asked as he stopped. "Don't you want to see the rest of the school so you don't get lost finding classes?" I asked raising my eyebrow. "Not really. Plus I'm sure you could give me private tour some other time." he said wiggling his eyebrows. Holy shit! I think he's flirting with me. I mentally kicked myself. Of course he's not flirting with me you dummy. "So?" he asked again. "Ok fine." We headed down to the University Centre to grab a snack from Tim Hortons. For those of you who don't know, Tim Hortons, or Timmy's as most people like to call it, is an addiction most Canadian have in common. Really, it's only a coffee shop but it's sooo good! I ordered for the both of us. "Can I get two large double doubles and two toasted bagels with cream cheese." The server got to it. I turned to look at Colby who had a questioning look on his face. "What?" I asked with a chuckle. "What's a double double?" he asked completely confused. "It just means two sugars and two creams." I said still giggling a bit. God how embarrassing, I never giggle. "Oh! That make sense. Wow I'm gonna have to get used to all these Canadian colloquialism 'Eh'." he said. "Ok, first off, when you say Eh, it has to come naturally. Honestly, sometimes I don't know I say it. Don't worry though, you'll get the hang of things." I said giggling once again. God damn these giggles. He just seems to bring it out of me. He giggled with me. "Fine, as long you help me." "Of course I'll help you." I said as he took a sip of his coffee. "Oh my god what is this?" he said look at his cup. "Uh.it' coffee.you don't like it?" I said a little shocked. "Oh no, I've never had coffee this good before! Starbucks is great when it comes to specialty drinks like macchiatos and frappuccinos but when it comes to simple effortless coffee, this is hands down the best!" he said smiling his now infamous (to me) smile. "Wow.ha ha ha, it's just coffee. You don't have to write a book on it." I teased. Everything just came easy with this guy. "Well it's really good. You Canadians have been keeping this a secret." he said with a smirk. After we finished our coffee and bagels, we headed out to find our group. We found them at Dafoe library. The rest of the day went by fast. Colby and I exchanged numbers headed our own ways. Fortunately, that was in the same. His dorm room, which was in St. John's college on campus was right by my parking lot. We said goodbye as he disappeared into the building. That night as a lay in bed, all I could think about was Colby. How could anyone be so perfect. The more I thought about him, the faster I fell for this guy. For Christ's sake I've barely know him for a day and I was falling for him. I could still smell his cologne. Burberry The Beat I think. The touch of his hand. The way the cold colour of his eyes still seemed to give me a warm feeling inside. My left hand started to snake it's way down, just reaching below my navel when my cell rang. "Damn it!" I cursed as I stumbled out of bed. I reached my phone and was ready to ignore the call when I saw 'Colby' flash on the screen. Oh my god he's calling me. I immediately slid the screen up and answered "Hello?" "Hello, I was wondering if could speak with Oliver?" I think I waited too long to answer. "Hello?" "Sorry yeah it's me." "Oh. Sorry did I wake you? I didn't know if I should call or wait till tomorrow to ask you but I decided to call you anyways then I wasn't sure if you were sleeping but then I was too late to hang up because it was already ringing and then before I knew it you had answered and yeah." wow.he seemed pretty nervous. Wonder why. "Oh no not at all, I was just lazing around being bored. What was it you wanted to ask me?" "Um.I was wondering what classes exactly you're taking. Maybe we have some classes together so I was thinking we could sit together." "Cool hold on lemme get my schedule....here it is, ok so tomorrow is Wednesday. I have Chemistry at 9:30, then Biology right after. Lunch at 11:30 for two hours then Calculus at 1:30. On Thursday I have my chem lab at 10 then German at 11:30 with English Lit at 1." silence took over. "Colby? You there?" "Sorry just looking at my schedule. Did you copy mine cuz we seem to have every single class together?" That really got me excited. "Oh, cool." I said trying to play of my excitement. "I guess we'll be helping and studying with each other a lot! It'll make it easier for both of us!" "Well I'll see you tomorrow then! Night bud." "Night." Comments, critiques?
