An Unrequited Love

Chapter One

"Dude be careful with that!" I exclaimed as my best friend Kevin almost dropped my television set on the floor.

Kevin grinned at me.

"Ah I'm not going to drop it. Don't go getting your panties in a wad now."

He sat the television down in the middle of the living room floor. We both looked around and surveyed the living room. There were boxes covering the floor. A couple of black trash bags filled with clothes were mixed in with the mess.

"Remind me why I let you carry the little bit of stuff that I own." I teased him.

He gave me his trademark impish grin that always gets me. He showed his pearly white teeth and huge dimples formed in his cheeks.

That grin, his smile and laugh and just being there for me is pretty much what kept me going for the past two months.

"Because you love me." He shrugged his shoulders.

In that brief moment of silence, all of the events of the past two months came flooding back.

I forced a smile.

"Only a mother could love that ugly face."

I was expecting him to smile back at me or have one of his trademark comebacks that I can become so accustomed to. I didn't get any of that. He just looked at me with a very serious look on his face.

"Are you ok?"

"Yeah. I'm fine." I lied.

"Don't lie to me either. You are horrible at lying you know. We have been friends for a few years now."

I shrugged my shoulders.

"Oh just thought briefly about everything that's happened over the past couple of months."

"You want to talk about it?"

"Nah. I'm good."

Kevin walked over to me and hugged me so tight that I thought he was going to break my back.

He looked me in the eyes. The blue in his eyes was like looking into the most beautiful sky.

"I'm here for you. Just know you can always talk to me about anything."

I could feel his breath exhaling onto my nose as he talked. It tickled badly.

I nodded my head.

"I know."

The somber moment that we were having was interrupted by the front door being flung open.

Kevin pulled away from me and looked at the door.

I rolled my eyes and saw that it was Eric. A friend of Kevin's that I couldn't stand. He didn't like me much either.

"What's up man?" Kevin greeted Eric.

"Oh just heading out getting ready to head to the campus." He looked around the living room. "Just glad I'm not stuck in this shit hole town like you and get to go to an actual college."

"It's not that bad." I tried to argue, but it just wasn't in me today.

"The hell it ain't. I get to go to lots of parties get lots of pussy. No parent's to tell me what to do."

He was really starting to irk me. I want to walk over to him and just punch him in the mouth as hard as I could.

I'm sure it wouldn't do much good, seeing how he was somewhat bigger than me. I was rather small, only five foot six and 125 pounds.

I eyed him up and down.

Or maybe I could take him. He's pretty lanky.

"Hello! There are no parent's here!" I retorted.

He shrugged.

I could feel my face turning red.

"Well you know at least-"

He stopped talking and was pushed sharply inside the doorway. Daniel, a mutual friend of both me and Kevin's as standing in the doorway.

"Usually you go in the doorway."

He looked at me and smiled. We both pretty much shared the same disdain for Eric. I was just more vocal about mine that Daniel was.

Daniel looked at me. "So I just came over to see if you and Kevin wanted to go grab a bite to eat with me." He surveyed the living room. "Looks like you got quite the mess there. How bout we head to the city and get something to eat then when we come back I help ya unpack."

I looked at Kevin. The look in his eyes said yes.

"I'm game." I said.

Eric's eyes darted around the room, and then he looked at his watch.

"Well dude's, hate to cut the visit short, but I have to hit the road or else I'm going to be late for orientation." He headed out the door, but stopped suddenly, turned around and looked at Kevin. "You should come up soon and see how much pussy you can score with me."

The sound of his voice was just like nails on a chalk board to me. I couldn't stand the sound of it. He had one of the most nasally voice I had ever heard. Pretty much sounds like someone clamped a clothes pin on his nose.

Kevin smiled. "Yeah I might have to do that sometime. That'd be pretty school. We'd tear that shit up."

I felt extremely jealous. Kevin seemed to be a totally different person when he was around Eric.

It was like he was his true self when he was around me. He was somewhat his true self when Daniel was around, but still not like he was with me.

Kevin and Eric high fived each other then he left. I sighed in relief.

Within the past five minutes my facial expression had changed from happy to sad then briefly to happy now to pissed off.

"What's wrong?" Kevin asked.

"Nothing." I replied sharply.

He just looked at me with a puzzled look on his face.

"You ready to go?" Daniel asked.

I nodded my head and the three of up walked outside.

"So I guess we will take my car." I suggested.

Daniel had a single cab truck and I didn't really feel like being cramped up in the front of it. Kevin had a dual cab truck, but the back had bucket seats that folded out of the sides. We could take it, but there was no way Kevin was going to let anyone drive his truck and I would end up being in the cramped up space in the back because I was the smallest of the two.

I felt Kevin snake his arm around me and reach into my right pocket. He pulled out my car keys and ran to the driver's side of my car.

It was nothing fancy, just a blue Hyundai.

"I'll drive!" He shouted ecstatically.

He hopped in the driver's seat and I got in the passenger seat. This only left the backseat for Daniel.

Now I was glad I wasn't driving. Daniel sat in the middle of the backseat so that he could see where we were going. He has got to be the worst backseat driver I have ever met.

Kevin backed out of the driveway and we began the half hour drive to the city.

We had a pretty good drive there. I don't think I had laughed as much as I did in months.

Kevin and Daniel both had way different sense of humor, and you put the two of them together and it's an awesome time.

Kevin pulled my car into a parking spot and came to a screeching halt. The three of us got out of the car and headed inside The Country Inn.

I know, it's a pretty strange name for a restaurant, but there food was amazing and the waitresses were pretty nice.

"So me and Dan kinda figured you would kinda enjoy it here." Kevin stated.

I nodded my head.

Daniel was the first to go inside and stopped at the host station so we could be seated.

We waited for a couple of minutes and a young girl about our age or a little older came up.

So looked at us and smiled.

"Just three?" She asked.

"Yes ma'am." Kevin replied and smiled.

To most people around that age it would be an insult being called ma'am, but Kevin does it all the time. He just has a way with people.

She smiled at him.

"Follow me then."

She led us to a booth in the back of the restaurant. She sat two menus on one side of the table and one on the opposite side.

Daniel sat down on the side by himself, then I sat down on the opposite side and Kevin scooted in next to me.

"Do you know what you want to drink?" She took an order book out of her apron pocket and looked at Daniel First.

"I'll have a coke." Daniel replied.

"I'll have a Dr. Pepper." Kevin looked at me. "And he'll have the same."

She looked at me and I nodded my head in agreement.

It was kinda amazing at how well Kevin knew me sometimes and how well I knew him.

"Ok. I will go get your drinks and be right back to take yall's orders." She tore the top page off and jotted off.

Daniel grinned and looked at us. "She's pretty hot. She was checking you out big time Ryan."

"Nah."

I had noticed that she was looking at me an awful lot longer than any other waitress would.

I'm not bad to look at or anything. I have dark brown hair. I think the actual name for my hair is chocolate brown or something like that. I have emerald eyes set evenly apart on a blemish free face.

"She wants to get in ya pants." Daniel teased.

This was the difference between Daniel and Eric. Daniel talked about sex playfully and Eric just talked about.

I know for a fact that Daniel wasn't a virgin. He had lost it to a girl he was dating our junior year of high school.

Eric talked like he got laid all of the time. I honesty doubted it though.

"She's not my type." I started blushing.

Girls just made me feel uncomfortable. Don't know what it was about them though.

Daniel laughed. "I'm just giving ya a hard time man. You know that right."

"Well duh." I chuckled.

A different woman came up to our table caring our drinks.

"Here are your drinks." She said as she sat them down in front of us. "I'm April and I'm going to be your waitress." She pauses and smiled at us. "Do you guys know what you want yet or do you need a few more minutes to order?"

"I'm ready." Daniel replied.

"Me too." I said.

Kevin nodded his head. His mouth was filled up with soda so he couldn't talk.

"I'll have the ultimate skillet melt with everything on it." Daniel handed her his menu after he told her what he wanted.

She looked at Kevin and me.

"Baked Ziti Parmesan and for the sides garlic bread and mashed potatoes." I gave her my menu.

"Give me the ultimate skillet not tomatoes or onions though." Kevin told her.

She finished writing our orders down and looked at us.

"Is this all together or separate?"

I was getting ready to say they were all separate but Kevin beat me to it.

"His is separate." He replied pointing to Daniel. "Ours is on the same ticket." He proudly patted me on the shoulder.

Kevin is usually a very touchy feely person with me, but here lately he has been even more touchy feely than he normally is. I'm not complaining or anything. It makes me feel safe. Makes me feel loved. After all, he is pretty much the only person left to love me.

"Ok then I will turn your orders in and will be back shortly." She turned and headed towards the kitchen.

I turned and looked at Kevin. "You don't have to pay for my food you know."

"I know, but I want to. It's the least I could do."

I just nodded my head, not knowing what to say.

I took a drink of soda. I felt a hand on my thigh a little too close to home. It startled me so bad that I coughed and the soda in my mouth flew across the table and got all over Daniel.

I looked down and saw that Kevin had his hand resting on my thigh.

Daniel's face grew angry they in changed just as fast back to his normal expression.

"What the hell was that!" He exclaimed.

"I stubbed my toe." I lied.

He didn't know me quite as well as Kevin so he couldn't tell that I was lying.

Kevin just grinned.

The rest of the meal went by pretty uneventful. After we had finished eating Daniel had wanted to go do something else, but Kevin said he wasn't feeling up to it, so we just headed back to Kevin's house.

When we got home, Daniel kept his word and helped me unpack everything. It was close to one in the morning when everything was situated.

Daniel had to be at work at seven. He was working a summer job at some factory. I wasn't even sure what it was that he did there. I just knew that I wouldn't like it there.

Kevin suggested that he stay the night, but he declined. He didn't want to have to get up and then go home and get clothes.

After Daniel left, I was pretty tired as was Kevin. We both went to our beds and turned in for the night.

I just hoped that I would have a nightmare free night.

As soon as my head hit the pillow I was out and it wasn't peaceful.

I sat on the couch in the living room reading a book by one of my favorite authors Chris Rice. My mom was sitting in her favorite recliner folding clothes. My two younger brothers who were thirteen and fifteen sat in front of the television playing a video game. My dad was sitting in another chair looking through the newspaper.

The laughter of my two younger brothers echoed off the walls. We fought sometimes, what siblings didn't, but I loved them to death.

There was a sudden banging on the front door.

My dad was always scared that someone would break in the house, so he always kept it locked with the door knob plus a dead bolt plus a chain that went from the door to the doorframe.

I always thought it was a little over doing it.

My dad got up since he as closest to the door. He looked out the window, then unhooked the chain and unlocked the door.

My aunt didn't wait for an invite. She just barged right in as if she lived there. She looked around the room.

"Good you are all here." She stated dryly.

"What do you want?" My mom asked her.

She looked at my dad then to my mom to me then at both my brothers. She closed the door and locked it.

"You really have no idea what you have done!" She shouted at my mom. "You took what was important from me!"

She unzipped her purse and stuck her hand in it. She left it in there briefly.

A sadistic grin spread across her face.

She pulled her hand out of her purse and was holding a gun.

My mom stood up.

My aunt pointed the gun at my mom. "Sit bitch!"

My mom obediently listened and sat back down.

My aunt turned towards the television where my now scared little brothers sat. She pointed the gun at the back of my youngest brother's head.

I didn't know what to do.

She placed her hand on the trigger.

My dad picked up a lamp from the coffee table and smashed it into the back of her head.

She turned around, pointed the gun at my dad's head and pulled the trigger. He fell back onto the chair, blood seeping out of his head.

We all screamed.

My mom knew what was next. My mom would do anything to protect her children. She got up to try to get the gun from my aunt.

It was as if she knew what my mom was going to do. She turned around, pointed the gun at my mom's head and pulled the trigger without any second thoughts.

I watched as my mom's lifeless body fell onto the floor. The carpet being stained crimson around her.

I didn't know what to do. I feared for my life. I feared for my brothers.

My youngest brother turned around and hit her in the kneecap with his game controller.

She grabbed her knee, the pain wasn't enough to stop her.

She pointed the gun at him and pulled the trigger.

I couldn't move. I was in shock. I didn't know what to do. I was paralyzed in the spot on the couch.

My other brother didn't have a chance she pulled the trigger. She then turned to me.

"I figured I'd save you for last." She laughed wickedly.

I couldn't move. I saw her pull the trigger. I closed my eyes. I screamed as I felt the bullet entering my stomach.

I grabbed my stomach.

"Ryan wake up" I could feel my body moving. Someone was shaking me.

I slowly woke up and realized that I was no longer in the nightmare that happened to me.

I looked up and Kevin was standing over me wearing nothing but a pair of boxers. He had a worried look on his face.

"You were screaming."

I could feel tears running down my face.

Kevin sat down on the bed next to me and wiped them away with his thumb.

"I had the nightmare again. I relived it all Kev," I cried.

"I'm sorry. I'm here now."

He leaned over and hugged me.

"I couldn't do anything to save them!" I screamed. "I just sat there on the couch and watched as she murdered my family."

"It's not your fault Ry." He tried his hardest to comfort me.

He walked over to the other side of the bed and climbed in. I felt his arm wrap around me and pull me closer. I could feel his bare chest pressing against my white t-shirt.

It was very comforting.

He let go of me and hopped over my body so that he was on the opposite side of me and was now facing me. He was looking into my eyes. I could see all of the concern that he had for me filling up his eyes.

He smiled at me.

"I love you Ry."

"I love you more Kev." I replied. "I really don't know where I would be if it wasn't for you." I started crying again. "You spent all of your time with me in the hospital waiting for me to wake up. I think that knowing that you would be there for me was what made me get better. I will be eternally grateful." I sniffled. "I'm thankful that your mom didn't sell the house when she and Steve got married and is letting us live here.

He grabbed me and pulled me closer. He wrapped his arms around me. His nose was touching mine.

He leaned forward and pressed his lips tenderly against mine.

Wow. Was all that came to mind.

His kiss was amazing.

I felt him pressing his tongue against my lips. I opened my mouth and his tongue darted inside my mouth briefly, then he pulled away and looked me in my eyes.

My first kiss by my best friend, the one person that I loved the most. Really the only person I had left.

I could feel myself slowly getting aroused from his kiss. He continued to cuddle me.

All I could think was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
