Chapter Three Part 1

"Come on now, wake up." I stood over Kevin shaking him. "You're going to make us both late for our first day."

My attempts at waking him up were to no avail. I had forgotten what a hard sleeper he was because during the summer we really didn't have to get up early.

He rolled over and pushed my hand off.

This was going to be harder than I thought. I was going to have to get creative to get him up.

I looked around the room for something to wake him up. I couldn't find anything. He could sleep through the television turned up as loud as it could go. The radio blaring wouldn't faze him either, nor would the phone ringing.

I climbed up on the bed next to him and looked down at his sleeping face. He was lying on his left side and his back was turned to me.

I got an idea.

I leaned over and put my mouth right next to his ear. I darted my tongue out of my mouth and left it inside his ear until it was all soggy and wet.

He shoved me off, rose from his slumber, and peered around the room. As his eyes returned to me, he looked up and wiped the sleep out of his eyes.

"What?" he asked crankily.

It was the most awesome sight to look at him. His brown hair was mashed down on one side, his blue eyes looking up at me. His smooth bare chest. I took it all in. He looked so sweet and vulnerable right then.

I shook myself out of my daze. "Uh...You have to get up. We're going to be late."

"A few more minutes?" He begged, still not completely awake.

I picked up one of my pillows and playfully tossed it at him.

"Nope." I pointed to the alarm clock sitting on my night table. "Look at the time. We're both going to be late for the first day of college and the last thing we need is a bad first impression with the professors."

Kevin looked over at the clock and saw that it was almost seven. He jumped out of bed and raced to the door.

"Why'd you let me sleep so late?"

"I've been trying to wake you up for an hour now."

"Oh."

"Now go take a shower. You stink." I said teasingly.

"Whatever." He rubbed his hands all over his body. "You know you love the smell of all this first thing in the morning.

I just smiled at him. The funny thing was that I actually did love the smell of him first thing in the morning. But I wasn't about to tell him that.

He hurried out of the bedroom and I could hear the shower running a few minutes later.

I walked over to the bed and laid back down to wait for him to get out of the shower.

I stared up at the ceiling, millions of thoughts racing through my head.

What was college going to be like? Would people like me? I had always been kind of shy and was a little awkward around people at first.

Will Kevin find someone else and forget about me? I knew that was a stupid thought. We weren't even together, but in my mind it seemed like we were. We did everything together. We shared everything. I couldn't handle the loss of another person. I had lost more than enough in the past two months.

"You ok?" Kevin asked.

I turned and looked at the doorway where he was standing, water dripping off him, towel hanging on his shoulder, exposing himself to me.

"Oh yeah." I snapped back into reality. "Just thinking about what college life is going to be like."

He took the towel and started drying himself off as he walked further into the bedroom.

"It's going to be great dude." He walked over to my dresser and started going through my clothes.

"I think I'm scared now. Get some clothes on."

He turned around and grinned at me.

"What do you think I'm trying to do?" He reached into my top drawer and pulled out a pair of my underwear and looked at me. "I hope you don't mind, I don't have any clean ones."

"Just don't stretch them out with your big ass." I quipped.

Kevin had a major bubble butt: round and perfect in every way. Physically, he was flawless to me. He had a flat stomach with a tiny trail of hair and a smooth chest. His arms would be kind of small to everyone else, but they were perfect to me.

Not only did he have the perfect body, but also a wonderful personality to go with it.

"Ha ha ha, funny." He laughed as he slipped my underwear on.

He walked over to my closet, got a pair of khaki shorts, and slid them on. He kept going through my clothes until he found a yellow t-shirt and put it on too. He then slid a red polo shirt over that.

I got off the bed, walked over to him, and adjusted his collar.

I looked him up and down then smiled and laughed.

"What is it?" He asked.

"You're wearing all my clothes. You want to borrow my toothbrush while you are at it?"

A big smile spread across his face.

"I already did."

***

The drive to school sucked. We had already driven there once (at my suggestion, of course) to see how long it would take us. The morning traffic flat out sucked: lots of people trying to get to work at 8 o'clock.

We had planned on carpooling to save on gas. I would drive on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; Kevin would drive on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My car got better gas mileage so I would drive the extra day.

We picked our classes out earlier in the summer. We had most of the same teachers, just on different days. We only had a few different classes too. I had planned on majoring in journalism with a creative writing minor.

Kevin loved history so he was taking history classes. I had no idea what he would do when he graduated. I suggested being a history teacher and he laughed.

We had a class called College Round Table first. All incoming freshman were required to take it, supposedly to teach us social skills and study habits that would help us through college.

Kevin and I walked into the classroom with a few minutes to spare. He walked to an empty two-seat table in the back. I followed him and took the seat next to him.

I scanned the classroom to see if I saw any familiar faces. I recognized Sarah Stevens, a girl that we had graduated with. She was extremely shy in high school and didn't talk to many people.

She waved at us and we both waved back.

"I figured there would be more people we knew here." Kevin stated.

"Nah." I told him. "The odds aren't all that great. I think there are multiple teachers for this course.

Everyone in the class talked with each other until about five after when the teacher decided to show up. I always heard of a ten minute rule that if the teacher wasn't there in ten minutes that the class was automatically dismissed. I didn't know how true this was.

The professor had short brown hair and wore a pair of black plastic rimmed glasses. She wore a long plaid skirt and a white blouse with a pair of converse high top shoes.

She walked to the board and wrote her name. Then she turned around and looked at the class to get everyone's attention.

"Hello everyone. Welcome to College Round Table. I am Professor Randall and I will be your instructor for the semester." She walked up and down each aisle looking at each of us as she talked. "We will be learning about study skills and social skills that will benefit you throughout your college years."

She made her way to the front of the classroom and stood behind a podium.

"Any questions about the class?"

Everyone in the class either said no or shook their heads.

"Good. With that out of the way, the first thing that we will work on is getting to know each other. I will start by telling you a little about myself. I graduated from North Classen High School in Oklahoma City as Valedictorian. I then went to OSU where I graduated with a degree in English and a minor in Rhetorical Writing. I live here now and have an eight year old daughter named Terri. I like traveling, reading, and gardening."

She stopped talking and looked around the room quickly.

"With that introduction out of the way, now it is your turn. You each are going to have a partner and will write a two page report about them. Double spaced, Times New Roman, size twelve font."

When she had finished, each of us started talking among ourselves.

Kevin looked over at me and smiled. "This is going to be easy. We got this."

Professor Randall walked to her desk, took a piece of paper out of her brief case, and walked back to the podium.

"Ok, so here are the partners, I have taken the liberty of making a list and assigning you each a partner. That way it's not too easy for you to write about someone that you went to high school with."

Groans could be heard throughout the classroom as she announced the news.

"Heath Michaels and Jennifer Stevens, Mark Godfrey and Sheila Shores, Chris Adams and Michelle Rice, Cory Martin and Hilda Ford, Victor Horton and Mallory Price, Hanson Palmer and Gina Franks, Jesse Rory and Lucinda Jones, Kevin Sawyer and Danielle Burt, Ryan Wilson and Sarah Stevens, and J'Michael Smith and Felicia Kline, you will all be working together. I expect the assignment to be handed in on Friday and we then we will being our readings. I also teach English so you can't pull anything over on me. You can have the rest of the class period to get started; anything extra time needed, will be done on your own time."

Then she walked back to her brief case and took out another stack of papers. This was our class syllabus. She passed one out to each of us, then went back to her desk and sat down.

"This sucks." Kevin said as he looked through the five page syllabus.

"Well, at least I know the person I'm working with." I said as I slid the syllabus into my folder for that class. "It just might be a little tough to get her to open up though."

I noticed people moving around the room to try and find their partners. Soon everyone sat with their partners except for Sarah, Kevin, and me.
I watched as a girl walked over to our table and looked at us.

She had long honey blond hair and rather tanned skin. She had such blue eyes that I knew they had to be contacts. She wore a pair of cut off blue jean shorts and a pink tank top.

She smiled at us.

"So like which one of you is, uh...Kevin?"

Kevin looked up, her large plastic breasts right in his face.

"Uh me." He stammered.

She held out his hand for him to shake.

"I'm Danielle and I guess we are partners for this thing."

"Nice to meet you Danielle." He shook her hand and gave her a huge smile.

That was my smile! He smiled at me like that! I was jealous.

"Like, how do you want to do this?" She asked.

I stood up from my seat and gathered up my things. I looked at Kevin who was fawning over this bimbo.

"Well I'll just excuse myself." I hastily made my way over to Sarah's table where she was sitting alone.

I was so jealous. There was no way I was going to let that trashy looking girl with poor grammar move in on my Kevin.

***

My next class was Freshman English I. I normally enjoy English class. (kind of nerdy I know, but oh well) This time I just wasn't that interested. The whole time the teacher was telling us about his expectations, all I could think about was the way Kevin was looking at that Danielle girl.

I didn't quite understand it. He kisses me. He acts like we're dating already, but the look he had in his eyes while he was talking to her made me uncomfortable.

I wanted to break down and cry right then and there.

Finally 9:50 came and it was time go.

My next class was humanities...with Kevin, of course.

We both wanted to take the class so we picked out the same time so we could help each other study. He knew that we would be studying different cultures and this was something that interested us both.

Hopefully by the time I got in there I would be feeling better.

When I walked into the classroom, I saw Kevin already sitting at a table. He had his books sitting on the table next to him and his backpack sitting in the chair.

As soon as he saw me walk into the classroom, he started motioning for me to come sit in the chair that he saved.

I walked over to the chair as he moved his backpack down to the floor. I sat down, not really wanting to say anything.

"So how was English?" He asked me.

"Okay."

Kevin hated one word answers. Especially when people would text him and it would be one word like ok or yes.

"Doesn't sound like it was okay."

I unzipped my backpack took out my notebook and text book and sat it on the desk.

"Huh?" I asked, pretending that I didn't hear him the first time.

"It doesn't seem like it was ok." He repeated. "You sure?"

"Good morning everyone."

Everyone turned around to the back of the classroom where the voice had come from. An older lady walked in wearing a pair of khaki pants and a button down blouse. She had brown hair pulled up in a bun and a pair of pink glasses.

She walked to the front of the classroom and sat her briefcase down on the desk.

"I'm Mrs. Fisher and I'm your instructor for Humanities I." She took some papers out of her briefcase and started passing them out. "This is your class syllabus. It pretty much outlines everything that we will be doing this semester. It's subject to change. Personally I kind of hate them, but the school says we have to do them." She walked back to the front of the classroom after she finished passing them out. "Our first focus will be on Ancient Greece and you will have a project due in three weeks. You are to make a menu, a play program and a newspaper that they would have used in Ancient Greece. You will have a partner; you may pick whoever you want because I don't want to spend the time picking them out for you. We are all adults here. Pick your partners and then when you are done, you are free to go. The summer ended much too quickly."

With that said, she walked over to her desk and sat down.

Kevin looked and me, giving me his trademark cheese grin. "Partners?"

"Do you even have to ask?" I asked.

"Nah." He started cramming his books into his backpack. "So what do you say we go down to the student union and get something to eat? I'm starving. Someone wouldn't give me the chance to eat this morning."

"Whatever." I replied half-jokingly. "I gave you plenty of time to get ready."

Kevin stood up from his chair and slung his backpack over his left shoulder. I hurried up and crammed all of my books back into my backpack and slung it over my right shoulder.

By the time we got to the student union, it was a pretty lively place. There were two entrances, one in the back of the building and one in the front of the building. The Fine Arts building that we came from was closer to the back of the building so we went through the back door.

There was a lounging area when you first walk inside with couches and chairs. To the right of the door there was a stairway that led upstairs to the student advisors.

The chairs and couches were all filled with students, both old and young. The older ones were looking through their books; the younger ones catching up with friends that they were seeing for the first time since the summer.

Kevin led me to the left of the door through a hallway that led to the dining area. It didn't look like there were many other students in there yet.

He walked up to the serving counter and stood there for a minute looking at the menu. I did the same.

"Can I have a cheeseburger and fries?" Kevin asked the server once he had decided.

The server picked up a burger wrapped in foil and placed it on a tray. She then picked up a paper bowl and took some fries out of the heating area and placed it on the tray. She sat it on top of the serving counter.

"Anything else for you?" She asked.

"That'll do it."

He picked the tray up and scooted down a few feet to wait for me to get my food. I decided to get the same thing.

We walked to the cashier together, Kevin grabbed a Dr Pepper and I got Code Red on our way to pay for the food. When we got there Kevin told her that he was going to pay for my food too.

He had been doing that a lot lately. His mixed signals were starting to get to me. I just wish I could know if he loved me the same way that I loved him.

We walked over to an empty table at the end of the cafeteria. Kevin sat his tray down and I sat mine down across from him.

"So..." Kevin let his voice trail off.

I took a fry and stuffed it in my mouth.

"So what?" I asked in between bites.

"What's wrong with you today?" Kevin asked seriously. "Every since Round Table this morning you've been distant."

"It's nothing." I took a bite of my fries. "I just have a lot on my mind."

Kevin took a big gulp of his soda.

"You sure that's all?"

"Yes." I said a little too shortly.

Kevin smiled at me.

"I love you." He whispered.

I felt him rub his foot against mine under the table. I smiled at him.

"I love you too Kevin." I told him quietly. I may have finally come out to myself, but I wasn't ready for the world to know it yet. "I just have a lot on my mind. That's all."

"I understand."

I honestly felt terrible for being short with Kevin. I was just confused about everything and needed time to sort through it all.

I knew without a doubt that I loved Kevin and wanted to be more than best friends with him. I loved everything about him, from his amazing good looks to his quirky personality.

I didn't know what to think about his mixed signals. It was like one moment he was all over me and the next I felt like he didn't like me in the same way.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my cell phone. I looked at the time.

"I'm going to call work quickly and make sure I'm supposed to be back today." I told Kevin.

"Okay." He mumbled through a mouth full of fries.

I dialed the number. It rang three times before someone answered it.

"Thank you for calling The Bargain Basket, this is Kyle. How may I help you?"

"Hey Kyle, its Ryan Wilson."

"Hey Ryan, how are things with you?"

"Things are slowly getting better. Thanks for asking."

Kyle was the Assistant Store Manager at work. He was a really nice guy; he called to check on me a few times after I woke up from my coma in the hospital.

"That's good to hear." I could hear him opening and closing a door. "I'm looking at the schedule and it looks like you work Tuesday from 3 to 11, Thursday 5 to 9, Friday 5 to 10 and Saturday from 6 to 11."

I laughed. "You pretty much read my mind. I thought today was going to be my first day back."

"Nope, tomorrow is. You enjoy you first day of college and I will see you tomorrow. Bye."

"See ya tomorrow." I said as I pressed the end button on my cell phone.

Kevin looked up at me.

"So what's the verdict? Do I get to spend some time with my favorite person?"

"I guess." I replied. "If you want to."

"Why wouldn't I want to?" He asked me.

"I dunno." I replied. "I don't really want to talk about it right now though."

"Well, I don't have to be at work until 3:30. What do you say after History we head over to the library and maybe start working on our project for humanities?" Kevin stuffed the last of his hamburger in his mouth and started chewing it.

As much as I tried, I couldn't stay mad at Kevin for long. He had done too much for me and we had been through so much together that it just was impossible for me to stay mad.

My jealousy had subsided a little also.

I smiled at him. "I suppose it can be arranged. Then I can drop you off at work. I'll come back to get you maybe an hour before you close and I will visit with you until you're ready."

Kevin picked up his bottle of Dr. Pepper and washed his food down with it.

"Sounds like a plan to me."

We finished up lunch and headed to History another class that we shared. It was also the last class we both had on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We both had the minimum amount of credit hours to be a fulltime student. I would have taken more, but I didn't feel like I could handle the load with everything else that had happened. Kevin just couldn't apply himself well enough to take any more classes than the minimum.

The word "boring" doesn't even begin to describe history class. The teacher Dr. Frost was ancient. He had thin gray hair without any on the top of his head. He wore a green striped button up shirt tucked into khaki pants which were pulled up nearly to his chest, held up with suspenders. He also used a cane to get around.

He passed us out or syllabus and went right into his lecture. He knew it so well by now that he didn't even use the textbook. I could feel myself starting to fall asleep just as he finished his lecture and dismissed us for the day.

"Oh my gosh!" Kevin exclaimed once we were out of the classroom and on our way to the library. "That has got to be the most boring class I have ever had. I think he lived through most of history."

"He was a tiny bit dull." I pushed open the door as we walked into the library.

I walked up the stairs and sat down in a chair right in front of the window. Kevin sat down in one right next to me.

"You sure had me fooled the way you were drooling while you were sleeping." He laughed.

"I was not!" I replied, perhaps a little too loudly for the library.

He looked around the library. There weren't very many people up there yet. Most people were still getting into the groove of things. I doubted we would actually work on our project; we were really just trying to pass time until Kevin went to work.

"You look cute when you drool in your sleep." Kevin gave me a quick peck on the cheek.

I could feel my face turning red.

I looked at Kevin and he was blushing too.

All the jealousy that I was feeling right then left as soon as my cheek felt his lips on them. We were out in public after all. There weren't people around us but still he kissed me in a public place even if it was just on the cheek.

To be continued...

Hey everyone, I would like to thank you all for reading. As you can tell this chapter is to be continued. No you won't have to wait weeks to find out what happens. When I wrote it, it was rather long and I broke it down into two parts and this is part one. I hope you enjoy. Please feel free to send any comments to rwill161@att.net
