Apar & Krish Chapter 4 --------------------------------------- The week went off as usual with Krish and me catching fleeting glimpses and quick "Hi"s as it was exam time. Atlast the semester exams were over and it was time for our semester holidays. I dropped in to Ravi's room as Ravi and Krish were busy packing for the holidays, "So guys when could we meet during the holidays. Need to plan for some outing". "Don't I see enough of you already in college ?" Ravi said grinning at me. "Here is my number, drop by when you visit your cousins in Chromepet. My home is not far away from theirs" Krish handed over a post-it. Ravi hauling his bag said"It is not like I don't want to see you. I'm visiting BIL (Brother-in-Law) and Sister in Singapore. As you know she is expecting. Anyway you are taking the same late night train as us right, we can go together to the station" "Lazy ass, you could give your goodbye kisses later on, the auto is waiting" that was Jagan rushing in. I felt bit hot in my ears remembering the last quick peck I gave Krish while he was asleep a week ago. *Auto is a three wheeled motorized vehicle used for short distance transportation [http://www.autoblog.com/media/2006/09/bajaj.jpg] I retorted "Yeah yeah coming. I know why you are in such a hurry, you want to guard your Sumitra (Jagan's crush) from other oglers" The auto is ideally meant for 3 and we were four. Ravi proposed to jockey alongside the auto driver but we had too many bags. Hence Krish ended up on my lap with Ravi and Jagan squeezing on to the seat. "Are you comfortable ? " Krish asked sympathetically as the auto jostled in the city traffic. "No problem Krish. You are not that heavy" I said smiling holding on to his waist with both my hands as he sat on my lap. As the auto moved along I rested my head on his broad back closed my eye inhaling his smell of sweat and deodorant mingled and enjoying the warmth of his body. I was so aroused that I hoped that Krish would not feel the poke from my pants against his butt. But he seemed to be lost in thought with the breeze from auto's movement messing up his hair. "Oye Apar, don't doze off and push my room mate out" Ravi shook me out of my trance. I was so pissed at him I would have chucked Ravi off the auto "Nothing will happen to your room mate as I'm holding him tight, if he falls I would fall along with him". We reached the train station, took out our bags and walked to the platform. I mentally planned to visit my Uncle's place as soon as I reach home to get a chance to see Krish in his home environment. ======================== After a week at home I made it to my uncle's place in Chromepet and the first thing I did was to call Krish. "Hey I'm here " I chirpped on the phone. "Hey Apar, nice to hear your voice. So tell me when can I drop in and pick you up ?" "How about post lunch around 2 pm, my cousins would be asleep and I would be free" "Sure, I'll come by" and the other end went dead. Krish already knew the address from our previous chats. Oh by the way I have 6 cousins in the same place from 3 maternal uncles (and aunts), though my total maternal cousin count is around 18. I always stay at one of my uncle's place where my grandma is. My other uncles get their children and drop them here before they leave for work and pick them up at night. During the vacation times all the 6 ( and me the 7th one) stay at the same place. The eldest and the one closest to my age is in to sports but a bit snobbish type though we get along decently. Rest of my cousins at Chromepet (all younger kids and girls) adore me as brother because the only other "brother" figure to them is my snobbish cousin. After telling stories to my little cousins and putting them to sleep I waited for Krish and sharp at 2pm he was there in his motor bike. I said bye to my grand mom, gave her Krish's contact number and told her that I should be back by evening. When I reached his house, it was a big one with a nice garden in front and few trees "Wow nice house Krish" I said. As I examined the vast and well designed interiors I asked "So where are you parents ?" "They have gone for a wedding down south for a family friend of ours, they left just today morning and should be back in 3 or 4 days" "Oh so what you do for food ?" "Bread, noodles and pizza the full range of gourmet dish" Krish replied wryly. "Oh shucks. Had my grand ma knew this she wouldn't have let you go without lunch" I told him. We chatted for some time in his room, he showed me his childhood photos and the time sped like light. "Want to take a dip in the pool ? There is a community swimming pool behind my house." he asked. "I don't know swimming and I don't have change of clothes" I said. "No worries, I will teach you. Early morning is the best time for our swimming as not many people would be around. So how about starting tomorrow ?" Krish was excited "But on one condition, you will have tonight supper and tomorrow breakfast at my place" I said. "Man I have hardly met anyone at your place. Don't want to trouble your grand ma" he said "I would be in deep trouble with my grandma if you don't have anything at our house. Come on" As we reached my uncle's home my little cousins were awake and playing. They screamed and ran towards the bike as they spotted me. "Where have you been for so long?", "Why didn't you tell us?", "Who is this?" I was flooded with queries. "You are Apar Anna's* friend ?" Sudha, eldest of my cousin who was 14 yrs asked Krish in a bossy tone. *Anna = elder brother. That is how my cousins address me. Krish didn't know what to say. He gave his unarming smile and said "Yes, nice to meet you." Vasu another younger one intejected and asked "What is your name ?" "I'm Krishna and everyone call me Krish" "My name is Padma, but everyone calls me kutty* " the youngest of all quipped. Kutty = the smallest one in Tamil. Krish felt a bit overwhelmed surrounded by little girls cross examining and I was amused at this. I took him away from them to my grandma. "*Paatti, this is Krish. I don't want evening snack as I had pizza at Krish's place" I lied. *Paatti = Grand ma My grandma was aghast "No proper food ? All this junk" I know I caught my grandma in the hook. "Well I ate it only once and Krish is planning to eat that and bread for the next three days" "WHAT ? Where are your parents ?" my grandma asked Krish with concern. "They are away for a marriage" I said. "You are not leaving without having supper. You should have all your food here till your parents are back". My grandma settled the non-starter of an argument. "Man you are a tricky one. Now I have to eat here else the next time I see you grandma I would be in trouble" Krish smiled. I nodded and showed him around the home. With in minutes we were surrounded by my little cousins and they started asking for a story. Kutty looked at Krish and asked "Do you know machine man stories like Apar anna ?" Others joined in "How long would you be around?", "Will you stay here?" I turned to Krish "It is the Asimov robot series". To Kutty I said "Krish anna knows lot of other stories like cop and thief story called God Father, which he will tell you if you don't trouble him much" "Ok" and they left us alone. My cousin Prabu dropped in late evening after his game of cricket. Krish and Prabu were mutually introduced. After the initial "Hi"s there wasn't much talk between them and Prabu was off to his room. "He is a bit reserved" I lied to Krish. We had our supper with grandma taking extra care of Krish and I smiled at him. "I'll drop him at his home grandma" I told my grandma. "If he is staying alone he could sleep here" my grandma insisted. "No, my parents might call to check on me. Also someone is needed at home for security. I'll come early in the morning tomorrow to take Apar for swimming" Krish replied. "If you are going to start early in the morning then you can sleep there with Krish and give him company. I'll get your changing clothes then" my grandma went inside not waiting for my reply. "Sorry man, it is tough to argue with my grandma" I said " I know" Krish was pointing to his overfull stomach. "As soon as you boys finish swimming drop in here promptly for breakfast. Don't fill your stomachs with junk. God knows how these kids eat pizza and chips." handing over a bag stuffed with my clothes. "Why should anna leave tonight ?" Kutty came running. I had to calm her down and send her off to bed. As we walked to his home "You have a wonderful extended family. My parents' marriage was love marriage and over that it was an inter caste marriage, hence both sides of the family have alienated us. I don't know how many cousins I have. I have never met any of them." there was a sadness in his tone. I guess lack of sibling too added to his feeling of loneliness, I tried to cheer him up saying "Once you tell a story you will win over all the 5 kids here and they will be behind you for more" As we reached his home I offered to sleep in the sofa inspite of him insisting I sleep in his room. We kept alarm to wake us up around 5 am so that we could get ready for swimming the next day morning. I couldn't get good sleep as this was a new place for me. I woke up as soon as the alarm rang. I slowly walked in to Krish's bedroom and found him curled up in a ball of bedsheets with a pillow covering his ear. "Krish get up, it is time" I tried to rouse him. "oh yeah" he mumbled and got up. We finished brushing and walked to the pool. There was just a security at the gate who seem to recognize Krish as he opened the gate "What Krishna so early ?" Krish pointed to me and said "This is Apar my friend, planning to teach him to swim" We got to the changing room where I changed to shorts while he changed to his swimming speedo. Wow what a sight I had. He had a tight abs (though not a six packer) and overall slim body with a real broad shoulder. I was trying to get my eyes off his body but it was tough. We took a quick shower before getting on to the pool. Seeing Krish in speedos and wet was whetting my carnal desires. We reached the pool and I got down at the shallow region along with Krish. He started explaining the nuances of letting go of the fear of drowning and relaxing so that I could float. He the cradled my torso and thighs in his arms as I frantically tried to stay afloat. My hots for him was overcome by my fear of drowning. Then Krish came up with the idea where I could try floating on my back. He asked me to lie down on his arms with me facing skywards. I was able to float once I was able to let go of my fear. But there was on more problem, now that the fear has gone my hots for Krish overcame my fear and my shorts started to become "Tented" as Krish cradled me in his arms. I quickly jumped of his hand so that my shorts are under water to let me cool off. "I could doggy paddle now that I seem to be over my fear of water. Coz worst comes worst I can flip over and float on my back" I said "Apar, I'll teach you back stroke if you feel more comfortable lying on your back but it would be good for you to learn front crawl for moving quick" The next 1 hr was spent on Krish doing his best to teach me front crawl and I trying to learn. Either Krish was a good teacher or I was a good learner as by the end of the one hour I was able to swim the breadth of the pool without problem using front crawl. "Good now I'm going to teach you to dive" said Krish as he got out of pool and walked towards the deep end. "Wait wait... I'm just trying to save my own life and hence that wouldn't involve diving" I said looking at Krish. "Ok then I'll just show you, but believe me it is fun" and Krish started jumping in to the pool from the shore first and then started to dive from a diving platform. In water Krish was in his elements and I loved the way various parts of his body coordinated to create a dive or for the matter his effortless swimming. As sun crept in more people started trickling in and we were done for the day. We bathed and rushed back to Krish's home. "Hey Krish thanks. It was fun, may be before I start next semester I'll try out diving and swim decently. So ready for breakfast ?" "Oh yeah sure. Let me change and get ready" He wore a jean and a tight cream T-shirt "Let us go. If I put on weight I can safely blame you. I'm being force fed " smiled Krish. We had hot idlis * and vada with Sambhar and chutney to go with it. *Idli - made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils(de-husked) and rice http://www.google.co.in/images?q=tbn:cfkJ7GFnixKTYM::static.flickr.com/39/79867164_6bac62fe58.jpg After we have been happily stuffed my little cousins started asking Krish about the "cop and thief" story of the "God Father" which he happily obliged. Krish sat surrounded by my cousins and started to tell the God Father story with sound effects, different voice and the kids listened to him with rapt attention. I felt happy for him. Lunch time came and grandma has to peel the kids away from Krish to ensure they have something to eat and another struggle to get them to take a lunch time nap. Three days went by and Krish had slowly integrated as part of my extended family. It is not just the kids but my uncles and aunts who came to pick them up my little cousins at the end of their work too started to bond with Krish well. In the mean time I was decently picking up confidence at swimming. I met Krish's parents who came back from the marriage trip and they thanked my grandma and myself for taking care of Krish. Krish's parents seemed to be wonderful people who love Krish a lot, compensating for lack of relatives. I'm not psychiatrist but I guess this might be the one that reminded Krish of lack of extended family. Both of them are professors in a reputed local college with a busy work life. Our swimming lessons, story times, general chat went on for two weeks. I became better at swimming and was able to swim for 1/2 hr without trouble, Krish was charming my cousins with wonderful stories . The day I was to return to my home before the new semester starts at the college, Krish and myself were walking to his home late afternoon after a story and play session with my cousins. As we walked Krish kept looking at me and as I faced him he just smiled and turned away. I felt he wanted to say something. So I probed him as soon as we sat on the couch at his home. "Tell me my cousins haven't drawn anything funny on my face ? Coz you seem to about to tell me something but holding back. What is it, come on Krish ?" "Hope you wouldn't think I'm corny, but thanks a lot Apar. I never had the privilege of getting to know my extended family, no uncles, aunts, cousins or grandma. But you let me in to yours and this is a great gift for me" I could sense his voice slightly breaking and he suddenly hugged me tight. I could sense him shake and my shoulder getting wet with tears. I didn't know what else to do other than to hold him and pat him on his back. At the same time I found my lips unconsciously kissing the back of his neck. I whispered around his ears "Hey Krish you have a much bigger extended family than you realize, you can have cousins once, twice and thrice removed. What is mine is yours". He held me tighter and responded in whisper "Apar thanks a lot for letting me in to your life". A bit later Krish let go of me, wiped his tear and spoke "Sorry Apar I was carried away". I said "What friends are for if not able to lend a shoulder to cry or lend all their cousins and aunts and uncles." He gave a smile "Yeah in an hour or so. I feel a bit overwhelmed I could do with a bit of nap time myself". I got up to leave "Oh ok then I'll catch up with you later. I'm leaving tonight to my home". "Hey Apar I didn't mean that I need to be alone, I need your company. Stay with me. You could sleep with me in my room. I feel better having you around". I obliged and just laid next to him thinking. I was happy and confused, is this leading to more than friendship ? Or am I taking advantage of Krish in a moment he was emotional? Will I lose my friend (and crush ??) because I over read in to things ? I was the one now overwhelmed as it hit as to what has been running in my mind everytime I had Krish around. I was deeply in love with him. Not just physically attracted but much beyond what the eyes could comprehend. As these thoughts ran in my mind, Krish hooked one of his legs around me and snuggled close to me fast asleep. When I left Krish's home I was suddenly scared. I did not know what scared me ? Is that the fear of really loving someone, or it fear of rejection or fear of losing someone you love or the fear of finding the secret, I didn't know. But I wanted to protect myself. May be I was not ready for this. These were the thoughts in my mind for the rest of the semester holidays.
