Cast of characters: Ben Hastings -- That's me! Bill "Bubba" Hastings -- My Dad Veronica Hastings -- My Mom. Reyna -- My Best Friend Ranj -- My New friend From Chapter 4: I was still exhausted from my ordeal, but I caressed his back and neck ever so gently as he caught his breath and even drooled on my neck. Is this what love feels like? I think it is! Then out of nowhere, he sobbed. "What is it?" I whispered. "Nothing. I just -- it's just -- I can't help it. Oh -- it's not bad. It -- just -- feels good to -- um -- let go and -- cry. It's a happy -- a good feeling, Baby." "Oh -- yeah, I know -- I wanted to too, I think." I hugged his head, and he sniffed snot all over my neck. "Omigod, I love you so much!" He said. "I love you too." I croaked. Chapter 5: I woke up feeling as loved as when I went to sleep. We were again on opposite sides of the bed, but it didn't matter. I turned slightly in Ranj's direction and he opened his eyes. He immediately shuffled over to my side and kissed my cheek. "Well, at least Bull won't have to smell my cummy breath today! We didn't do any of that! Haha! "Aw, C'mon! You don't have practice on Sunday -- do you?" "Nope!" He grinned. If we want, we can spend the whole day in - " BVVVV! It was my phone vibrating. "Hello?" It was from home. "Where are you?" My dad yelled into the phone. I thought quickly, but nothing came to mind, except that mom knows where I am. So I decided honesty would be best. "At Ranj's." I said, sounding way too forlorn. "Good!" My dad hollered. "Let me talk to him!" I pressed the mute button. "It's my Dad. He wants to talk to you!" "Wait!" Said Ranj. He ran to the bathroom. "Now ... What?" "Oh, I see!" I let the mute button go, and hollered, "Ranj! Phone for you!" "I'll get it in here!" He hollered. "It's MY phone!" I hollered. "I'll be right in!" When he got closer, he said, "G'mornin' Ben! Who is it?" "My dad!" I said, handing him the phone. Ranj is so much sharper than most other footballers that I know. Only he would have thought so quickly of such a plan to make my dad think we slept separately! Maybe he'll be another Steve Young! "Hello? Yes sir. Oh! I really didn't expect you last night. No Bakersfield is in two weeks. Yeah. Oh YOU know -- I was in the bathroom cleaning up after your son and I had mad, passionate morning sex!" I could hear my dad laughing on the phone. Then Ranj said, "Okay, sir. What's that? Probably not that soon, Benny boy didn't have his turn yet! Ha-ha-ha! No, seriously, I already have breakfast half made. Okay, Sir. Thank your wife for offering. Thanks for calling! Behave? You're bad!" He hung up. "Your dad is so cool!" He said to me. I was in shock. "Yeah, I guess, but my heart attack is getting in the way of me enjoying him at the moment." "I really don't think he has a clue." Said Ranj. "Oh he has a clue alright: Maybe not that YOU are doing anything, but -- he definitely had a clue about me!" "Don't worry about it, Benny! It's cool." "Your mom invited us to breakfast, too, but I declined." "I heard. So -- what are we having?" "I think I want to start with some boy meat and -- wash it down with some juice -- pure boy juice!" He said. And he got it! I did too, by the way. We had a fun morning -- more playing and a little more valence study. When I got home, my dad was in a particularly good mood. He asked me if I wanted to watch an afternoon football game with him. I was about to say no thanks, but then changed my mind. "Don't worry, Ben, I'll tell you what's going on. If you have friends on the football team, you really need to know a little about the game." Said Dad as he tossed me a beer. As we watched, I saw what Ranj was talking about -- the hand in the center's crotch. "Why do they do that, Dad?" "So there is no chance of the ball getting mis-hiked." "Oh." "Does that kind of turn you on, Ben?" Dad said, suddenly serious. "No!" I said, defensively. So, I lied! Obviously he was testing me! "I was surprised that you didn't go to Ranj's game last night. You and he seem to really be hitting it off. That is one sharp boy!" "I know." I said, wondering where this was going. "I think he was disappointed that I didn't. But -- I didn't know, and -- I already had plans with Reyna. I couldn't break them again." "No, that wouldn't be right. But it was nice of you to go out to Ranj's so late last night. Did they lose their game?" "Yeah -- why -- er -- how did you know?" "I figured that was why he asked you to come over. He was probably a bit down, huh?" "He was." "He screwed up, didn't he?" "Dad! How did you - " "A girl can't possibly know how it feels to do that. He needed another guy last night -- someone who knows what it's like to lose a game. It was obvious. Why else would he call you over in the middle of the night?" I almost blew it and said, "Oh no! I called him!" But -- I caught myself and said, "Makes sense to me!" Is my dad really that clueless or is he playing with me? "Well, anyway, I guess you were able to support him in his time of need, huh?" Dad said. (If he had any idea - - !) "Uh -- yeah -- I -- uh -- guess." "So are you going to the Bakersfield game, week after next -- with me?" "After last night, I don't think I'll miss another game!" "Oh! Good! Why?" "Oh! Er -- um -- he really was -- um -- more disappointed -- than I realized he'd be -- that I wasn't there." (Watch it, Ben!) "Yeah, I know. I hated it when my friends didn't come to see me play!" Dad said. I was about to choke! "And my best friend was kinda like you -- he didn't really get in to football. Oh CRAP! Did you see that interception?" His attention was never completely away from the TV. My blank stare gave dad some ammunition. He spent the next 2 hours tutoring me about the game of football. I don't think I ever enjoyed a time more with my dad! At the end of the game, he said, "Thanks for watching the game with me, Son. I'm looking forward to driving up to Bakersfield with you." "What? The game's in Bakersfield?" I said. "Oh, you didn't know?" He said. "Hey! Let's get a motel room and invite Ranj to stay with us!" I felt a little sick. "Uh -- yeah -- that'd be - - fun!" I said. "If you go to a real game next Saturday, you'll be more excited!" He said. "Yeah -- may -- er -- probably. Thanks, Dad." "For what?" "Asking me to watch the game. "Are you kidding? Watching a game with a son has to be one of the most satisfying activities a man can do!" He smiled, as we got up and headed for the kitchen. Mom had called us for dinner at least a half hour before, but dad asked if she could hold it. At first I was a little pissed, but now I'm glad. We were about to sit down, when Mom said, "It'll be a few more minutes. I have to reheat it. Go relax some more and as soon as Ranj gets here - " "What?!? I said "I called and invited him to dinner when you guys asked me to hold it. His parents are still gone -- right?" "I -- guess." I said. "How did you know his number?" "I looked at the phone log. He called this phone once." KNOCK-KNOCK! "Go let your friend in, honey." This is just getting spooky! I opened the door. "Hey!" said Ranj, presenting me his fist. I connected with it and let him in. "I just watched the most incredible game - " "Yeah!" I said, "That last minute interception was spectacular!" I hoped I said the right thing. My dad was smiling. "Oh yeah! That dude was a lot better than I was last night! I SUCKED last night!" He said, grinning at my dad. I almost choked again! "Benny told me you were disappointed." Said Dad. By the way -- my boy and I will be coming up to Bakersfield to see you!" "No SHIT?!!? Oh! Sorry Mrs. Hastings. No kidding? You are?!!" Ranj was all smiles. "Even my dad wouldn't go that far to see me. You're the best!" I was warming up to this idea. Mom served us pot roast and all the trimmings. "My mom never cooks anything like this. This is really good!" Said Ranj. "What does your mother usually cook?" "Well, a lot of rice and -- a LOT of curry!" He said. "Don't get me wrong -- I couldn't live without curry! But this is great, for a change! I never get beef at home." "Probably just as well," Said my dad, "Creates too much bulk for a pass receiver. You need to be lean and mean - - and fast! How you do in the 100 yard dash?" "I haven't done that since high school -- and it's the 100 meter dash now -- but -- I came in at just over 11 seconds, I think." "Um -- lessee -- a meter is a bit more than a yard -- then -- you ARE fast! So you can get way out there fast huh?" "I do okay. Now if I can just hang on to the ball -- better than last night - " "You can't beat yourself up over the past. I remember in high school, there was this girl -- ah HAH! That's it, I bet! You were looking for someone in the stands -- weren't you?" The question went unanswered, as I choked slightly on a piece of beef. "So -- did you screw up bad enough that your coach may want to start someone else next week?" dad said. "Naw. But I know I'll be running the bleachers tomorrow night!" I felt a little left out of the conversation, and a little jealous, but I really liked that dad was so interested and liked Ranj so much. "When are your parents coming home, dear?" Mom asked Ranj. "They'll be gone most of the week. They weren't supposed to leave until today, but something came up and they had to go early." "You're welcome to stay here, Ranj. I'll serve beef every night!" Mom, said. "Now don't be spoiling the boy, Ronnie, he has to eat right for the game -- gotta watch that girlish figure! Hahaha!" "There's nothing girlish about him!" Mom said. "You got that right!" Said Dad. "Save room for chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert." Mom said. "I dunno -- maybe -- well, yeah, maybe this once, but -- I really have to watch it, Mrs. Hastings. Mom cut the cake and put the slices on plates on the counter, and put the ice cream out for us to serve ourselves. Ranj took the smallest piece of cake with an even smaller scoop of ice cream, but once he tasted the cake, he said, "Oh what the hell -- er -- HECK -- sorry Mrs. Hastings -- maybe I WILL have some more." Mom sliced a huge piece for his seconds and then he put gobs of ice cream on it. Mom looked pleased. "So are you going to accept Mom's invitation to stay here, Ranj? I asked. "I don't think I better. Thanks Mrs. Hastings. But I really should go home -- feed the cat and let her out and then back in later. But maybe another time when my parents are not gone." "Maybe Benjamin can keep you company again tonight. I hate to see you staying all alone." "That'd be cool!" Said Ranj. "but I don't want to take him away from anything import -" "I'm okay!" I said, trying not to be too overly excited. "Let me get some clothes and stuff. C'mon to my room, Ranj." I said. As we were walking away, Mom said to dad, "They sure seem to get along well, don't they, Bill?" Did they think we were deaf? "It's about time the boy found someone who can teach him how to be a man!" I wanted to kill him until he added, "God knows I've screwed that up!" I closed my bedroom door against the sound. As soon as we were in there, Ranj said, "Omigosh! I couldn't believe it when you choked out there!" "Well, you and my dad were blowing my mind! `I sucked last night!' Geez! Did you have to put it that way?" Well, actually I didn't get that until after I said it. It seemed to go over your dad's head. "I don't think anything goes over Mom's head. She knows about us -- for sure. Did you see some of the looks she was giving my dad -- behind his back? She loves him -- and so do I -- but sometimes he can be such a butt - or as Mom says, SO Neanderthal!" I grabbed clothes to wear to school tomorrow and then we left. "I hope we see you before that Bakersfield game, Raunch Man!! Hahahahaha!" My dad said, walking us to the door. I know it's stupid, but I couldn't help feeling a little jealous. Then Ranj did something that blew my mind: he hugged my dad! "Thanks you sir! I hope so too!" My dad's eyes got big and he smiled slightly, then ever so slightly shook his head -- in what looked to me like a gesture of approval. I followed Ranj in my own car. He went into the house first and I was two steps behind. As soon as I cleared the door sill, I jumped up onto his back, piggy-back style. "Having another sleepover, huh? You guys sure know how to study! Sweet!" Said Bull. I was still clinging to Ranj's neck when I looked over, stunned to see Bull - - and three other of the big footballers. "GET OFF ME, FAG!" Said Ranj. Wrenched free of me and slammed me against the wall. "Second thought -- I don't think I need any tutoring tonight! Just get your queer ass out of my house!" He threw me bodily out of the house and slammed the door. I wasn't hurt -- at least not physically. I wasn't home before my phone rang. "Ben? Benny? Are you okay?" Ranj cried. "Fuck you!" I blubbered, and hung up, turning off my phone. I stopped the car. I could hardly see through my tears. My stomach was in knots. I couldn't go home. What could I tell them? I just kept driving past my house and to nowhere in particular. I found myself in the deserted parking lot of Cerritos college. The lights were bright from the businesses across the street, so I pulled around to the overflow parking, where it was dark. I locked the doors, reclined my seat, and started to cry almost convulsively. Ages later -- it seemed - I was almost cried out, with no more than a shuddering gasp now and then, when a tap on the window scared the shit outa me. I fearfully looked and there was that little guy who I had traded a few blow jobs with in this very parking lot, shivering outside my car. I opened the door. "Dude! What're you doing here -- besides freezing?" I didn't even know his name! He stumbled and hit his head on the top of the door frame and landed on me. I dragged him over me, into the car. He was almost unconscious. I struggled to close the door, started the motor and turned the heater up to high. His body felt very cold. I held him close for about 15 minutes, and he slowly warmed up. I couldn't stay here all night now. I drove home. I rehearsed to myself all the way home what I could tell my parents. When I got there, easily 4 hours after I left, both my parents were on the driveway immediately. Before I was out of the car, my Mom was screaming -- not at me but -- at the situation. "Oh! Benny! We were so worried. Ranj called four hours ago for you! Where did you go?" I hadn't rehearsed what to say if Ranj called. What had he told them? Now what? "I -- uh -- Mom! There's a sick boy in my car! Please let's get him in the house!" "What? What the - - !" My dad said. He ran to the other door of the car and opened it. Jared -- he had told me his name by now -- looked ashamedly up to my dad. "Well, let's get you into the house, son!" Dad pulled the guy out and half carried him into the house. He made him lie down on the couch. Mom and I followed. "Where do you know this boy from?" Said Mom. Dad mumbled something under his breath. "Jared goes to Cerritos." I said "How -- how -- how - " Said my mom. "Where were you?!!" My dad demanded. "I -- we -- I mean - " "And why didn't you stay at Ranj's?!!" he demanded further. "Didn't he tell you?" I asked. "He only said that you left in a hurry, dear. We have been worried sick about you." "Damn him!" I said. "What?" They said together. "He threw me out!" "What'd you do, come on to him?" Said dad. "BILL!" Said mom. "What did happen Sweetheart?" Said my mom. Well, Ranj at least didn't tell them anything. "We had a disagreement. I didn't feel like coming home - " I started. "Did you try to KISS him?" Dad growled. "Bill!" my mom hissed, in the manner which Dad never countermands. "- to that!" I finished, indicating my dad. "So I drove to the Cerritos parking lot -- in back where it's not so light -- to sleep." "Oh, Benny, you could have been - " "And where did you pick up this pathetic boy?!!" Dad said, derisively. "Bill - - GET OUT!" Mom said through her teeth. Dad slunk out like a cowering dog with his tail between his legs. Mom turned to the other guy. "Did I hear your name is Jared? Where did you get all those bruises?" "I -- uh -- fell -- down some steps." "And where did the blood come from on your shirt, Ben?" She said to me. I looked down and sure enough, there was dried blood on my shirt. I put my hand up to my nose. Blood. "I guess I had a bloody nose. I didn't even know." It also didn't occur to me that Jared might have bled on me. "How old are you, Jared?" Mom asked. "Nineteen." "Should I call your parents?" "NO!" He said before she had finished. "I mean -- no thanks. I don't live with them." "Where do you live?" He looked at me then back at mom several times, then decided he could tell us. "Behind the college." "Oh. In some apartments?" "I think he means in the parking lot behind the college, Mom." "Oh!" She said, stunned. "Omigosh -- you mean your ho - " "Homeless. Yes." "Where are your parents?" "I dunno where my dad is. Never met him. Mom's in Cerritos. My present step-dad and I didn't get along too good, so I moved out." "Oh! My dear child!" Mom said. I was worried she was gonna hug him! "Well, do you think you're okay now?" "Yes'm. I can leave as soon as you say." "Oh, I wasn't meaning -- no! You can't -- I mean -- Ben, go get some clean sheets from the linen closet. "You're going t sleep here on the couch, tonight, Jared!" "No, I couldn't, Ma'am! I - " "He can sleep with me, Mom. I know him! Well, I've seen him enough at school!" I said. "Well, you both will need to get cleaned up first. Show Jared where the shower is and get him a clean towel. I think there are some in the dryer right now." I got him a warm, fluffy white towel from the dryer, then showed him to the shower. After the shower was going, I went back to the living room. Dad was back. He looked somewhat repentant. Mom stood in the doorway to the kitchen, looking stern. "Ben -- ben?" Dad stammered. What a pussy he was when it came to my mom. I softened. "Dad -- I'm sorry that I made you worry. It wasn't my intention. I thought I was doing just the opposite. I didn't think that Ranj would call." "Ben -- he not only called -- he came over! I dunno what happened between the two of you, but -- he was upset -- had been crying." Said Dad. I didn't know what to say. I was dumbfounded. Dad continued. "Ben, I've suspected for some time -- worried, really -- that you might be -- might be -- um - " "Gay?" "Yeah. I kind of figured out tonight -- after Ranj came over that you two were -- you know! I think I knew it in the back of my mind before tonight, but I was hoping he might teach you some of the things I never could -- about being a man." "Dad!" I started to shriek" "No, let me finish - - son." Dad said. "I'm sorry that I didn't show you how to be manly! I just - " "I just was never interested in the things you were. Hey! I'm NOT a girl! I just never liked football -- before this week -- and of course there's the little issue of my attraction to guys!" "Maybe if I had spent more time teaching you - " "Aw, c'mon Dad! Do you really think you could have taught me not to - be -- gay?" We talked like that for the next twenty minutes, not really getting anywhere. At least he wasn't angry. Then we heard a thud in the bathroom. We ran and had to use the pass key over the door frame to get in. He was sitting in the shower, looking sheepish. My mom was right behind us. Dad covered him up with the towel. "I just fell. Sorry. Been doing a bit of that." "Oh, Jared!" my mom said. "Your ribs! No wonder you're weak. You're hungry! Bill help him get up and into some -- Ben, get him something to put on and bring him to the kitchen! I gave him some sweat pants with a drawstring and a terry cloth robe. He came and sat at the table. It was 3:30 in the morning. He ate about ½ the bowl of soup that Mom offered and said he was full. "You're gonna eat a decent breakfast!" Mom said. We all went to bed. Immediately, he snuggled up close to me. I got out of bed and locked the door. I came back and held him for the next three hours -- until it was time to get up. Before we went to sleep I asked him the real reason for the bruises. He didn't say anything for about five minutes. Then he started to sob. He told me that his step-father had beaten him. And then, some of the football players were doing an informal scrimmage Sunday afternoon and he thought he was hiding, watching them. They had caught him jacking off under the bleachers, watching them play, and sweat, shirtless in the cold afternoon. "They beat and kicked the crap outa me! Why do I have to be such a loser wimp?!!" He started to sob and fell asleep. He was wearing a high school class ring. I got a good look at it when I woke up. It said 2001. When he woke up, I asked him, "Why did you lie about your age?" "Huh?" "Your class ring says 2001. You're not 19!" "I'm 23. But I look like a teenager still and -- it's embarrassing to tell people that I'm that old! And that my stepfather and the fucking footballers can beat me up like that. I hate it!" "You could go to the police." "I could - - but I won't! Ben, I didn't even know your name until tonight. What we did in the parking lot - - before - - I usually did for money." "Oh! Dude! I didn't know! I'm sorry! I mean, I would never have - " "No -- it's okay! I never told you because you -- loved me back -- or it felt that way. The other -- guys -- some of them were on the football team -- used me rough. But they paid me well." "Jared -- I have to ask this -- please be honest. Did a guy named Ranj -- ever -- use you?" "There were never names. I'd remember that name. But I don't ever ask and they sure as hell don't tell! What they KNOW is that guys give better head." "Ranj is dark and very handsome." "OHH! Him!" "So he DID -- um -- partake of your services?" "Oh -- no! I wished he would! He never did anything but stand around and watch. He usually had that parka hood on, but I always knew it was him. But after that night that he followed you, I haven't seen him. I was surprised to see you last night!" "You didn't think that he -- hurt me or anything!" I said. "Oh no! Oh, I know you saw me that day he attacked you at school. And of course I saw it happen. Dude, you can't ever approach those guys at school! They only want you at night!" He paused then added, "Don't worry -- if you're good, he'll be back!" "It's not like that!" I said. He loves me -- he told me - " "Of course he did! Look, he's one of the nicer ones, I guess. But he just wants you to be his bitch -- but never at school! What has he paid you?" "Paid me??"!!" I exclaimed. "Well, I guess he has! He's paid me with love -- he's done as much or more to me as I have to him." "Oh! He really likes to take care of his bitch! Yeah, there are some like that. They want exclusivity. But just don't ever try to take it public -- well you learnt that lesson!" "Well, I don't believe it!" "Okay. But don't say I didn't tell you. I've had Bull too, you know! But none of those dimwits even know the others are doing us!" "Bull??!!" "Yup! He was always kinda rough, but I like to be bossed around, and spanked when I'm bad." "You said, "was" kinda rough. You don't -- um -- `do' him any more?" "Oh no! He's exclusively Cookie's man now!" "Cookie? You, mean he's got a girlfriend now?" "Hahah! Not even close. We may call him girlfriend sometimes, though. He's a cross dresser." "Oh, geez!" I said. Mom fixed a Sunday breakfast for us on Monday morning. He only ate about half what a child would eat. When we left, she said, "You WILL be back here tonight, young man!" to Jared. He smiled. On the way to school, he said, "You'd best drop me off before we get there. You don't want to be seen with me. If they see us together, they assume we talk -- which of course we do!" He jumped out of the car when I stopped at the corner. "I'll pick you up in the overflow lot!" I yelled. He smiled. Dang! I'm friends with a football whore! And he thought I was the same! Gotta set him straight on that point tonight! I usually never see Ranj until our 3:00 PM class. I saw him a total of FIVE times today! Each time, he averted his eyes. When 3:00 PM rolled around, I didn't go to class. I went out to the convenience store to get a snack. "PSSST!!" I looked and Ranj was standing around the corner of the store. I ignored him and went into the store. When I came out, he was standing at the door. He looked left and right and then grabbed my elbow and steered me toward the corner. I jerked loose and he cried, "Please, Ben -- please let me talk to you. You don't have to say anything -- if you want -- but - - please." He ended plaintively. I followed him. As soon as we got around the corner, he started to talk. I cut him off. "Did you know that other of your big, brave football buddies go back to the back parking lot?" "What?" "Bull has a bitch called Cookie. He likes him because he looks like a girl. But before cookie, he had Ja -- someone else. And he's not all there is. Several of your football buddies have guys that do them -- for money." "So -- they have whores, huh? I really didn't know that. What's that got to do with you and me?" "Am I your bitch?" I asked. "Wha -- Ben! Noooo! I love you!" "That's what you say!" "I do!" "Prove it!" I said. He looked both ways and was going to kiss me. "No! Not like that! Tell you friends that you are -- my boyfriend!" "You know I can't do that!" "Then I CAN do this!" I said, and I walked away. He ran after me. "Ben! Do YOU want the whole world to know that YOU'RE gay?" "If that's what it would take to be with you -- then yes." I said. "Ben! Don't walk away like this! Please!?" He pleaded. "I'll tell them! I will!" "When?" I said. "Soon!" "How soon? Ranj, I can't take this. You've attacked me twice now. What do you expect? How soon?" "After Bakersfield we only have two games -- unless we get into the playoffs. So by the end of the regular season -- I'll tell all the team!" "Hmm. Bakersfield is in two weeks, and then two more -- Ranj! That's four weeks -- almost!" "ONLY four weeks! It'll go fast!" "But I want to see you before that!" I said. "You can! I mean WE can! We - " "Ranj, the last time you attacked me it was at your house! Your friends come and go as they please, some even have keys! Nope! If it's only four weeks, then we won't be seeing each other for that long. I haven't been that badly hurt -- yet." "Ben -- I wouldn't really hurt you!" "I got a bloody nose last night. I guess that's nothing to a football player! Ranj, yesterday afternoon, four of your so-called friends had a scrimmage -- just playing around -- at the football field." "I know. They wanted me to come, but I wanted to be with you!" "The four of them attacked a little gay guy that was watching them. Four to one. Four big football players -- one little sickly guy!" "Sickly?" "He was beat up by his stepfather and has been living in the back parking lot. He snuck under the away-team bleachers and got carried away. They saw him and beat the crap outa him!" "Carried away?" "He was beating off, Ranj! Maybe stupid, but four to one? One of them on him would have been too much! And - - you know exactly who they are! No! You tell them BEFORE Bakersfield, or you won't see me there, nor my dad. He knows what you did to me." "What? You told your dad?!!" "And you won't be seeing me after that either." "You told your dad?" He repeated. "What did you expect?" "You TOLD your DAD." He said, sounding defeated. "Before Bakersfield." I said and I left. Two hours ago, I didn't ever want to see him again. Now I'm AFRAID I'll never see him again. Not like that. Not like I want! Notes: Is Ben being too demanding? Is Ranj being to casual? Comments are welcome, to Steve at stevethomas535@hotmail.com.
