Gordon was a little pale but we soon got him moving towards the serving line. We all got something to eat and moved to a table big enough for all of us. Gordon didn't eat much of what he got. He was busy darting looks in every direction as if he was waiting for something bad to happen. We eventually got through supper and when we left the cafeteria Gordon seemed to be breathing a little easier. "That took guts Gordon and you came through it with flying colors. It should get easier now." "I hope to hell it does Den. I'm ready to call it a night." "Then maybe you had better. We'll see you in the morning." Karl and I went for our nightly stroll and later found a place for our goodnight kiss. I was back to my room and just caught up on a few things until my 11 pm message came in and I sent mine back. Pete was still up, but it was lights out for me. 5:45 came around once again and it was up and out with Aiden and Gordon right there as well. Laps were run, showers taken and once again the seven of us headed down to the cafeteria. Things were a little tense for a bit, but breakfast ended up being uneventful and we were off to classes. The day progressed much as any other Wenesday and I had time to kill between the end of Accounting and the time the apparatus room opened. I headed back to my room to drop things off and while I was there I checked my email. Today there was an item there from the Dean of Men. "Please report to the office of the Dean of Men at 4pm on Thursaday the 15th of January." Nothing else. I knew in my gut that this couldn't be good. Now I almost didn't want to go to practice. This would bug me until tomorrow and I knew I couldn't let it. When it was time to head over to the rec center I got myself as together as I could and headed out. Once I got to the Rec Center I went in and got changed and headed for the apparatus room. Once in there I saw Gary and Dwayne, who was on crutches. I went over to speak to them before things got started. I was still feeling a little guilty about the whole situation. "How are you guys doing?" "I can't speak for Dwayne, but I'm hanging in." "Yeah I am too. I should be off these damn things before the meet, I hope. Meanwhile Coach Warren is using us both as extra sets of eyes." "Yeah I guess we know how important that can be. Well I was going to work on my rings and floor today. You guys keep hanging in." I went and stretched out and moved over to the floor area as nobody was using it at the moment. Coach Warren was watching me and when I finished he called me over. "Think you can work one of those doubles into a triple somersult Mr Sawyer?" "I've actually tried a couple of times Coach. I just don't have enough to get around the third time, even in the practice harness. I know the degree of difficulty would give my scores a boost, but not if I can't land it. It may help you to know that we've all been working under the fact that our previous coach would rather see a clean excercise than something fancy done poorly." "Well that does explain a few things. It's a system that seems to be working on the whole though. Thanks for the heads up on that. Otherwise it was a good run." "Thank you. Now let's see if I can get the rings to cooperate." I had to wait as there was someone else working the rings at the moment. Just to keep warm and limber I went over and worked on the pommel horse. Not doing my usual routine, just keeping moving. Once I saw that the rings were free, I went over and did my routine, concentrating a bit more on the control of the rings than the actual moves. "Control is important Mr Sawyer, but so are your moves. A little more concentration if you please." It was more or less a gentle reminder and for the rest of my routine I paid more attention to my execution. "Much better Mr Sawyer." I finally finished my routine and moved out of the way to give someone else the rings. I had the time so I went over and did my high bar routine as well. What coach had said stuck in my mind. My usual dismount from the bar was a double tuck. I threw a little extra swing into the release and tried to land a triple. I landed up on my butt. "Good try Mr Sawyer. See if you can carry a little more speed into the somersults and you should be able to land that squarely." "I'll work on it coach, but I think that's enough for today." I headed into the locker room and changed into my bathing suit and hit the pool as usual. By the time I got out of the pool and made my way to the whirlpool, Karl was there to meet me. "You look beat love, You ok?" "I tried to land a triple out of my bar dismount and ended up on my ass. I'll get over that I suppose. What's got me worried is a email to be in the Deans office tomorrow." "Any idea what that's all about?" "None." "If he doesn't want to see you immediately, well it can't be that bad I'd guess." "Maybe not, but I doubt like hell I'm going to sleep well tonight." "You'll sleep like a rock Den; you almost always do." "Yeah we'll see. We'd better get out of here in case Gordon and Aiden are waiting on us." "Yeah I suppose." We were out of the whirlpool and showered and shortly were back to my dorm to find the 5 guys waiting on us. It was once more down to the cafeteria for us and though Gordon wasn't all that happy being there, he got through it without any outwards signs of being uncomfortable. We finished dinner and the guys made their way up to their rooms while Karl and I took our walk. It was pretty much a silent walk tonight. "Just remembered love. This weekend the campus is going to be really crowded. It's the annual grudge match basketball game." "Damn has it been a year already?" "It sure has. I'm doubting there will be any practice time for you over the weekend." "Which means a week from Saturday will be an all day practice, and the week after is the meet. At least we get to sleep in our own beds this time." "And the three after are all away meets. Then it's the all states in May, and spring break thrown in during March just for spice. I take it we're still not making plans for that right?" "Not at this point love. If I don't hear anything by the middle of next month maybe I'll be willing to think about it. Did you have somewhere you wanted to go?" "You're going to think I'm nuts, but I'd like we should go to Disney World." "You are nuts. Do you have any idea how freaking crowded it's going to be at that time of year? Not only will we be on break, but half the school systems in the country will be as well." "Yeah I guess you're right. But I don't want to go to Aruba or Jamaica or Cabo or any of the other places like that where everybody goes. Maybe a cruise if we can book one that late." "Which would end up taking us to one of those places anyway I'm betting." "Yeah maybe. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what develops." We found our place for our goodnight kiss and headed for our rooms. A little reading and 11 pm seemed to come early tonight. Messages recieved and sent and it was lights out. Lights out, but sleep didn't come as easily as Karl had expected for me. I must have eventually dropped off as the phone buzzing woke me up as usual. So it was into the jogging stuff and out to meet the guys. We did our laps without incident and were in to shower and down to breakfast. Gordon didn't hesitate in the least as he headed into the cafeteria. Just so long as nothing happened I was pretty sure he would be fine from here on out. I guess I had tempted whatever guardian had been watching over us as there was the crash of a dropped tray somehwere within the room. Gordon froze for a few seconds, as did a few other people. "Just some broken plates Gordon." I saw him take a deep breath. "Yeah I guess." He moved to a table and we all sat down and ate our meals. I did notice that Gordon ate all of his this morning. So it was off to class and I tried to keep the meeting with the Dean out of my mind, with little success. One of the guys in class had noticed and stopped me before I left. "Dennis, you seemed a little out of it today. Are you feeling alright?" "Yeah, I'm just a little distracted. I have been called to the Deans office and I have no idea why." "I'm sure you aren't in any trouble Dennis. Just relax and try and get through the rest of your day. Whatever it is will work itself out." "Hope to hell you're right. I think I just need to go relax for the next hour and a half." I did that and ended up skipping lunch. Historical events didn't seem to hold my interest today as it usually did. When it ended I still had 2 hours to fret about things. I went back to my room and tried to relax again to little avail. 3:30 and I left the dorm and made my way to the Deans office. Mrs Humboldt was at her desk as I expected. "Have a seat Mr Sawyer. Dean Evans will be with you shortly." Still no hint of what was coming. Did Mrs Humboldt look like she was enjoying this? Right at 4 Dean Evans opened his office door. "Please come in Mr Sawyer. First off breath young man. You're not in trouble. In fact there is a bit of good news. The Alumni association has kicked in a grant to cover buses for the away meets of the gymnastics squad." "That's good to hear." "Yes it is, though what I have to tell you next is not so good. Dennis, I hear things. Some good , some bad, some neither. I know you must have heard the rumor that the shooter was a disgruntled ex student. I've heard that some people think it was Mr Grant and they think you are responsible because you got him kicked off campus. Well I'm telling you and everyone else that idea is bunk. Mr Grant is responsible for getting Mr Grant thrown off of campus. Further he apparently had problems long before he ever got here. Dennis, we're releasing a statement tomorrow, but I decided you needed to hear it from me first. We couldn't release anything due to certain legal restrictions. Dennis, it was indeed Kyle Grant."
