Just because there was darkness didn't mean that sleep came. I must have dozed off and on for the rest of the night as I was awake when the alarm went off at 5:45. There was still no Pete. I changed into my jogging stuff and went outside and found the guys waiting for me. My face must have spoken to Aiden and Gordon. "Still no Pete I take it?" "No he hasn't shown up yet. He isn't here by the time we're done with breakfast Karl and I are going to the police. Let's get this in gear." We were around and Karl joined us and he could see the look on my face as well and merely nodded. He knew damn well where we were going and it wasn't to class. Laps were completed and we were in to hit the showers. Still no Pete. It had to have been one of the fastest showers I had ever taken. I was into the room and was dressed and on my way out the door when I ran into something solid. "Jeez take it easy Den classes don't start for damn near an hour." "Pete! Where the hell have you been?" "What are you, my mother? Suz and I went 'off the grid' for the weekend." "Fucking tell somebody next time will ya! We've all been worried sick all weekend." By this time Gordon and Aiden were standing there as well and Karl was just coming down the hall. "Sorry about that guys. Guess I wasn't thinking. So let's grab some breakfast and get this day over with. You get yourself a car yet Den?" "Not yet, but I think we're going to take care of that after class." Now that Pete was accounted for I went back into the room and grabbed my books for the day and we headed down to breakfast. The day went much as any other Monday and eventually classes were finished. I still had to wait for Karl to finish his last class. I did a little more surfing for cars while I waited. I finally got fed up, closed my eyes and moved the mouse around and hit the button. What came up on screen was a 2 year old Camry, royal blue and the dealer was in town. It only had about 6k miles on it so it hadn't been heavily driven. The price was right where I expected it to be. I did a screen print and decided that was the car I was going to get, but not without driving it first. By this time I knew Karl would be back to his dorm shortly and I headed out. Soon enough he was coming around the corner of the building. "Bank first and then the Toyota dealership." "You found one you like?" I just handed him the printout. "Looks nice and it's fully loaded from what I can see here, low mileage and looks like a fair price. I guess we have a winner." "If it's still there. Who knows how often they update the web site. But I'm hoping." We were soon enough to the bank and I had the money transfered to my checking account and made damn sure that it was going to be available immediately. Out the door and over to the dealership and we found a salesman. I just showed him the print out. "I'd like to test drive it please." He gave a quick up and down look. "Not a problem. I'll have it brought around." He moved off to a desk and made a call. "The way he looked at us, think word has gotten around about the two snotty kids looking for a car?" "I wouldn't be surprised Den." The car was quickly enough brought out front and we went to look at it. "We have a test drive area out back or we can take it to the streets if you like." "I think the test drive area will suffice as long as it has a decent straight away." "Just shy of a half mile." "That will do fine I think." I got in and Karl got in the back and the salesman took the passengers seat. We all buckled up and made our way to the test area. Apparently it had been a road course track at one time. "When we first opened the dealership we thought it was too good a thing to pass up. It had been closed for a number of years." From the start of the straight I took it up to highway speed and still had some of the straighaway to play with. I set up for the turn and eased through it without skidding any. It was an automatic transmission so I had to use the brakes a bit more than if I were driving the TR3. A sharp turn into an uphill straight that led into a series of downhill "s" curves. A short straight that led to a hairpin turn and then another straight that was broken up by a chicane. It all ended in a long sweeping curve back to the main straight. I negoatiated the course and finally pulled the car back around to the front of the dealership. "You drive very well young man." "My other car is a sports car, for which I went to a very good driving school. Let's write this up." "I need to get you with our finance manager." "No you don't. I'm paying for it." Which earned me a bit of a raised eyebrow. I looked up at the clock and it was 10 minutes to 5. "You have just enough time to call the bank and verify my account if you wish to complete this deal." The guy took my checkbook and made the call quickly. "Well Mr Sawyer the bank has verified funds, all I need now is your drivers license and your insurance carrier and I can get the paperwork generated in short order." I handed over both and let the man get to work. 30 minutes later they were bolting on the temp plates, I had both the registration and proof of insurance and Karl follwed me back to campus. I still had time to stop by the campus security and get a new parking sticker. That took about 10 minutes and then I drove around to my parking lot and Karl was soon over. We headed inside to grab some supper. Aiden and Gordon were there when got through the line so we sat with them. "So?" "2 year old royal blue Camry and it's sitting in the lot." "Very nice." "Thanks Aiden. It should serve me well." "We going for a ride after supper?" "Not tonight. I've negelected a few things over the weekend that I need to take care of now, plus with the practice tomorrow I want to take it easy." "Ok then some other time." Pete showed up at that point and I had to go through the routine again. "Ok then. You've got yourself a car, now what do you think I should do with the money Den?" "Pete, I'm not going to give you any advice on that. If it turned out badly I wouldn't want it to ruin our friendship. Best I will tell you is to find a good investement counselor and follow his advice. Preferably not my company for the same reason." "I may not be as financially astute as you Den, but I know enough that just about any investment is a gamble. If I lost it on your advice I don't think I'd hold it against you. I'm betting the chances are that you would have gotten hurt a lot worse then me following your own advice." "True enough I suppose but I'm not willing to take the chance." "Ok Den. I'll find somebody else if that's the way you want it." "It is Pete." Supper was soon enough finished and Karl and I took a short walk and had our good night kiss and then I was upstairs to get some work done. I got things taken care of and just kicked back until Karl sent me his message at 11 and I sent mine back. It was lights out and I was soon asleep after not having slept well last night. Tuesday morning dawned bright and clear. I was soon downstairs and laps were taken care of as were showers and breakfast. It was then off to class. Macro Economics went well enough and then I had and hour and a half to kill until Historical Effects. I headed over to the student union for a light lunch and a quick review of what we were going to cover today. While I was there I bumped into Randy Porter. "Hey Randy. Did that lawyer ever find you?" "Yeah he did. You could have knocked me over with a feather when he handed me that check." "So you decided to take the sure thing as well then?" "Yeah I know my relatives well enough to know that there's going to be a hell of a lot of infighting. I'd just as soon not get into it. The guy did inform me of Pete's wish to meet the rest of the family. You tell him for me that he should forget it. They're a pack of sharks." "I'll pass the word but I doubt like hell he's going to listen." "Well tell him he's been warned." Randy got on his way as did I. Historical Effects went about as I expected today. Then it was back to my room for some study time before the practice. Soon enough it was time to head over to the Rec Center. For some reason the place seemed busier than usual today. I finally got into the locker room and none of the guys looked to happy. I cornered Dana. "What the hell has everybody in a mood today?" "You haven't heard? The opposing team is demanding that we all undergo a urine test." "Can they even do that?" "Apparently. They found out who our new coach is and they've made a case before the governing body. I think this is something that we had better get used to. There's only 3 more meets after this before we go to the all states. Face it things could be worse." "Yeah I suppose so. You think this might just be a head game?" "Always possible I guess. Might just as well go and get this over with." "Yeah I suppose so." Dana and I made out way down to bathroom and we waited our turn to submit a sample. I made damn sure to watch that they sealed my sample before I headed out to the floor to stretch out. The attitude around here today wasn't going to make for a good practice. Eventually the coach came out and formed us up.
