It was down to the car and a drive thru breakfast for the drive to the airport. Getting into longterm parking, catching the shuttle to the terminal, security and then finally boarding. Traveling first class was kind of nice as we had a bit of room to stretch out. The plane was about half empty, but we had one stop over at Atlanta at which point the plane was loaded to capacity. We finally landed in Orlando, and we made out way to the car rental location and picked up our car. Finally out on I4 and westbound. I found that I truly had no appreciation for how large the Disney property was until I had to find my way to our hotel. By the time we were checked in it was well into the afternoon and we decided not to waste one of our days tickets. We unpacked and found we had a view of the Magic Kingdom from our window. Mostly the back side of Space Mountian and the GE Carousel of Progress. We decided to take a walk around the hotel so we had some idea of where things were. The Grand Canyon concourse with its mosaic covered elevator bank was a sight to see, and the first pictures were taken. We checked out the various dining facilities and planned on breakfast at Chef Mickeys so a reservation was made. We headed outside to check out the various pool areas and what not. We stopped at one of the many places around the property and got ourselves a drink and just sat there and relaxed for a while. The decision had been made to make an early night of it so we could be ready to go in the morning. We were in our room early when all of a sudden there were firewroks going off over the Magic Kingdom. We knew of course that they had them every night, but didn't expect to be able to see them from our room. We hit the sack shortly after the fireworks were over and were quickly asleep. 6am came much sooner than expected and we were out, showered and dressed and down to our breakfast, which ended up being attended by a multitude of Disney Characters. I was glad I had my camera as Karl was loved on by Minnie Mouse. A picture he would never live down. Of course he got one of Daisy Duck loving on me. The monorail brought us to the Magic Kingdom and we walked under the railroad station and onto Main Street USA, where we were greeted by a host of Disney characters. Karl and I took turns taking pictures of each other with them as the Dapper Dans sang from the front of City Hall. Soon enough we were on the move down Main Street towards Cinderellas Castle. Passing the Grand Emporium where just about everything that was available in the gift shops within the park could be gotten, except for specialty craft items. The hat shop where we were only slightly tempted to get a pair of mouse ears, the movie theatre and other specialty shops. Everyone was held up here in front of Cinderella Castle until the rope dropped and then the people took off in every direction. We turned right to head into Tomorrowland. Our first objective had been Space Mountian, but we ended up going into Alien Encounter, which to my mind was based somewhat on the movie "Aliens". Then it was across the way to Time Station. A 360 degree presentation, where a "volunteer" was sent back in time and you got to view things through their eyes. We finally made it down the street and to Space Mountain. The walkway into the attraction was lined with various space scenes and depictions of space craft. When we finally got to the loading area Karl and I were seated together and we moved into the starting position. Lights were flashing, Mission Control was in our ears and then we launched. What followed was a high speed twisting and turning in near blackout conditions. We ended up exiting the attraction through an arcade and were right across from the Lunching Pad. It sounds like we made good time at everything, but make no mistake the place was crowded and we waited in line a fair amount of time. I must admit though that the lines almost always seemed to be moving. After lunch we headed over to the GE Carousel of Progress. It was an audioanimitraonics display of venues depicting life from turn of the century America on through to modern day America and the advances that had been made in between. Here we encountered the first of "those" Disney songs. You know the ones that get into your head and you end up humming them for the rest of the day. From there Karl and I made our way up through Fantasyland. There wasn't much here that we were interested in seeing so we moved quickly through to the far end where we did stop at "It's a Small World." Here we encountered another of "those" Disney songs. I was lucky in the fact that my camera could take pictures inside without the flash, as there was no flash photography allowed in any of the Disney attractions. Something a few people disregarded none the less. We crossed over to Liberty Square and made our way first to the Haunted Mansion. I don't know precisely how they worked the stretching room,as I certainly didn't feel any movement, but needless to say Karl and I were blown away. What followed was the haunted house ride of all haunted house rides, with a group of hitch hikers looking for a ride out at the end. The Hall of Presidents was our next stop. Again an audioanimitronics display giving a brief history of America and ending with a presentation of all of the presidents. We moved on from here to the Country Bear Jamboree. A wild revue featureing the Country bears. The paddlewheeler river boat was tempting after as was Tom Sawyer Island, but we passed on these and moved on to "Big Thunder Mountain." A wild train ride through the canyons and hills of mining country. From there it was around to "Splash Mountian." A trip through that old Disney classic "Song of the South." Karl and I ended up in the middle of the boat and of course ended up getting soaked at the end of the ride. We got held up at this point for the afternoon parade, which in and of itself was someting to see. Bands, floats with the various Disney characters, and dancers galore. I was beginning to wonder if two memory cards were going to be enough. We moved around the park and over to the "Pirates of the Caribbean." Captain Jack and his crew were having a merry time of it. We stopped and had a drink before heading on into the "Enchanted Tiki Room." I didn't know much about this attraction and when not only the birds and flowers started singing, but when the very walls came alive. Well needless to say I was pretty blown away. Not to mention another song that would stay in my head for the rest of the day at least. Across the way and on to the "Jungle Cruise." A boat trip through the jungle with audioanimitronic animals, and some of the worst jokes I had ever heard from the boat captain.(We have some of the most interesting plant life around here as well. See this one? it gets 12 ounce buds. It's an Anhieser Busch). Our final attraction for the day was the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. As close a copy of the one used in the movie of the same name as was possible. The day had been broken up by more distractions and shopping oppurtunities than you could imagine. Luckily,as we were staying "on property" we had all of our larger purchases sent to our room. I had gone nuts at every pin counter that we encountered. The pins alone that I collected would add another 5 pounds to our luggage and this was only our first stop. By the time we cleared the treehouse it was getting fairly late in the day. We moved across the bridge back towards Main Street and decided to stop and have dinner at the Crystal Palace. After dinner we lingered around Main Street and wandered the shops here and even took time to go into the movie theatre for a screening of "Steamboat Willie." When we came out it was starting to get fairly dark, and Main Street was getting thick with people for the night time parade. Every float that came down the street was adorned with lights galore. Even those who were accompanying the floats were lit up and if one looked closely, you could see the battery packs they were carrying to sustain the effect. There were large floats and smaller independent floats for various Disney movies. Ursala, from the LIttle Mermaid asked if I could be her friend, right before an independent little fish float came up and squirted me. The larger floats were something to see and make no doubt of it. The large demon from, I think it was Fantasia rolled down the street and unfolded in all of it glory. When the parade had passed people still stood around. I knew that they must be waiting for the fireworks we had seen last night. Sure enough a few minutes later the first of them went off. At the same time as the fireworks were going off Cinderellas Castle was being transformed by the use of lighting effects. It went from a gingerbread castle to candy striped and on through a myriad of others. AS grand as the fireworks had seemed from our room, being this much closer made them even more exciting. Karl and I stood there just as mezmerised as any 6 year old, eyes wide and jaws slacked. "I can see why you wanted to come here love. I'm glad that we did." "So am I love." At which point he leaned in a gave me one hell of a kiss. Now it was trying not to get crushed by the crowd as everyone headed for the exits at once. We decided to take the long way around and stop at the other hotels, just say we could say we had been there. First stop was the Grand Floridian. It was setup to imitate the grand living of early Florida, when elegance was in style. We walked into the second floor mezzanine to be greeted by a band playing in the lower foyer. We made our way downstairs and settled in to listen for a few minutes. They were playing different Disney themes. We found out that they had been here weeknights for many years and that they were loved by just about all. Soon enough it was back onto the monorail and on to the Polynesian. We went into the lobby and the vegetation that was everywhere was very lush. We went to the lounge and had ourselves a nightcap, unusual for us. Once again onto the monorail and back to the Contemporary. Our packages had all been delivered to our room and we got them set aside and made ready for bed. Tomorrow we were on to Epcot and the World Showcase. **************************************************************************** Please all of you Disneyphiles, I know that this chapter doesn't reflect current attractions at Disney. This was done specifically so as not to lock myself into a time period. I'm trying to avoid having to deal with real life to some extent. It is afterall fiction. For those of you who are not Disneyphiles, I am sad to say that the little things that make Disney so special to a lot of us,like the band at the Grand Floridian and a few others that will be revealed in the next chapters, are sadly gone now. These were not just casualties of the epidemic as some of these folks were let go as early as October of 2019. Personally, I think that Disney will be much poorer a place without these fine folks.
